Fan favorites such as Dr. Eggman, Tails, AiAi, Amigo and many more will join Sonic in their custom built vehicles, revving their engines and jostling to stay ahead of the pack. Each character will speed around the track in cars, planes, motorbikes, and in Aiai’s case – a banana mobile! Secret short cuts, swift handling and avoiding strategically placed obstacles are certainly the best way to get to the top of the podium. But winning is only part of the fun in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing! Each character has a specific All Star move – such as Super Sonic, Banana Blitz and Tails Tornado – that allows a quick way for competitors to get back into the race! Power ups and weapons can also be collected around the tracks and used against the opposition to ensure they don’t become a threat to that number one position. [Sega] Expand

  1. Whilst it wears its influences on its sleeve and won’t supersede Mario Kart DS as the handheld racer of choice, All-Stars Racing ensures a thrilling duel to the finish line.
  2. With great controls, gorgeous graphics, awesome sound, and a perfect sense of speed, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is a very exciting kart racer and the closest that anyone has come to matching Mario Kart on a portable Nintendo system.
  3. Sega delivers an entertaining Mario Kart clone with good controls. Nevertheless, All Star Racing isn’t challenging enough to live up to Nintendo’s genre highlight.
  4. If you are looking for the second best kart racer on the DS, or if you are tired of the usual Nintendo universe, look no further: Sonic & Sega all-star racing on the DS is a great game.

Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing may not have a whole lot in the gameplay department that it can call its own, but Sumo Digital took what worked and built a SEGA-themed experience that captures what makes the company's games so memorable.
  6. The core gameplay mechanics are set in stone and the addition of a set of achievements really helps propel the game from the mediocre range of racers.

    Just middle-of-the-road material. [Mar 2010, p.87]

The powerups are interesting and racing against other Sega characters is never dull. The Grand Prix is where this game shines the most. Final verdict? 10/10 Expand

Sega attempts a heavily modified Sonic Drift title, is it fun and worth the money?
The game's racer roster contains 20 characters with 7 of them being from Sonic games, the characters behave slightly different on the DS version in comparison to the console versions and any group of racers that would normally share a vehicle are cut so that only one person is in each vehicle.
There is a decent amount of tracks but some look a little too similar to each other and comes off as looking a bit lazy overall. The game consists of a mission mode to go along with the single player, multiplayer, Wifi and Time Trial modes. The game has many unlockables such as hidden characters and new music. For people who like chasing achievements, the DS version has this as well surprisingly enough. The game itself plays in a manner similar to Mario Kart DS but with some different weapons, racing mechanics and other things that make it unique in comparison.
Although the game is fun, after completing mostly everything in the game, not even the Wifi multiplayer mode will save the game from eventually getting boring.
Overall, it is a decent racing game starring the characters of the Sega and Sonic universes but isn't as good or as memorable as Mario Kart DS.

It's understandable why it's not just like the console version, and it's good for playing this game on the go, but if you were to choose between this and the console version, I'd say console, and only get this if you like Sonic racing games more than Mario Kart. Quite the well done game, but this game is a little on the wonky side, and certainly is a departure from the console releases.
