Marvel Super Hero Squad. This is a game...you know what? I'm not even going to do a normal intro for this game. You want to know why? IMarvel Super Hero Squad. This is a game...you know what? I'm not even going to do a normal intro for this game. You want to know why? I have two good reasons. For one thing, you have to ask yourself, have you ever heard of this game? The only reason I remember it is because I have actually played it. Not a lot of people got this game when it came out, probably because it came out around the same time as a lot of other good games in 2009. The other reason why I am not going to do an intro for this game is because this game totally sucks, and the only real reason why I am writing this review is because I want to tell all of you why all of the mixed reviews of this game are all balderdash! In other words, whatever you do, do not buy this game! Especially when there are so many much better games out there. This is the worst Nintendo DS game, if not the worst video game I have ever played, and this review is going to tell you why. Let's start with the gameplay shall we? This game is a fighting game that allows you to take your favorite (childish) Marvel characters and fight each other. That idea sounds excellent on paper, however, here it is so poorly executed! For one thing there are only two modes, story mode, and battle mode. That's it. There is really nothing else to do in this game other than those two options. The story mode is just a side scrolling beat-em' up game, and there is usually a boss at the end that you have to fight in a battle mode style battle. Battle mode basically takes those boss battles and allows you to fight in multiplayer. One of the biggest problems with this game that I noticed almost immediately after I started playing it, is that the game is a complete rip-off of Super Smash Bros.! Seriously, it is a 2D fighting game, with only a handful of Marvel characters to play as, and the stages are designed in a similar way to Super Smash Bros. There are even items, special moves, and super moves you can use once you charge them up, just like Super Smash Bros.! I could forgive this if the game was executed as well as, if not better than the game it was ripping off. However, that's the thing, it's worse than the game it's ripping off! For that, I have to take off a ton of points from its final score! There are only ten characters total to play as (8 are unlocked from the beginning, 2 have to be unlocked by completing the game's story) compared to Super Smash Bros. Brawl's 35! There is also only a small number of stages to pick from compared to Brawl's several stages! Also, you can only fight one on one, Brawl allows you to fight with three other people on the same arena, not just one! However, the biggest problem with the game that makes it worse than the game it is ripping off is the controls! The controls feel stiff and unresponsive. On top of that, I lost count of the amount of times I mistook one button for the other because the controls are so much more confusing than Smash Bros. The only good thing about this game's gameplay I think of is that at the very least, there are some original modes here that aren't in Super Smash Bros. that I think would make a great addition to the series. However, because the rest of the gameplay of this game is so terrible, that doesn't really matter too much. As for the story, it is just terrible. It follows the story of the cartoon series it is based on, however, there is zero character development, it is not well written with terrible jokes thrown in, and the story is little more than a convoluted mess that has you playing as random Marvel characters. There is literally nothing good about this game's story at all. The only people who are going to know the characters by the end of the game are the die-hard Marvel fans! I decided to save the graphics for last. This is not because they are good however. It's like the game developers said "You think the gameplay and story are bad? Check out these terrible graphics!" That's right. The graphics are actually the worst part of all about this game! This game is the first game I have ever played that actually gave me a headache from looking at the graphics for too long. They look horribly unrealistic, and far too pixelated for the Nintendo DS. Once again though, this game's graphics actually gave me a headache! That has literally never happened to me before when playing a video game. Overall, this game is absolutely terrible, and if you have a Nintendo DS, stay as far away from this game as possible. You will regret buying this game, especially when there are so many much better DS games out there. If you want an excellent DS game, buy a Mario game, or Kirby Super Star Ultra, or a Zelda game. Heck if you still want a Marvel game, even Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, which I reviewed earlier is better than this game!
