It's horribly awkward to play, causes genuine pain after a while and thanks to the limitations of the DS cartridge has horrible sound quality. If you can get past important issues like those then the game itself is nice enough, but that's a very big if.

Shrinking Guitar Hero onto the handheld DS system is an impressive achievement but doesn’t make for a particularly compelling game.
  3. For newbies, the controls are too unwieldy, and for veterans, though they’ll get a short burst of fret-shredding (for $49.99…), stylus scraping just doesn’t compare to a life-sized Gibson controller. With all the fumbling it takes to hold the DS comfortably, you’ll wonder why you’re playing this in public.

As a novelty, this is fine and will provide the odd fun moment. But unlike its endlessly replayable older brothers, you won’t be coming back. [Sept 2008, p.90]

For people with DSs, there are at least ten better rhythm games on the system, and for Guitar Hero fans, this is nothing but pointless.

Not much else you need to know! It works very well, just as good as the console versions. Although you have only 4 keys this time so veterans may find it a little easy. The music selection is pretty good. 25 songs plus a hidden unlockable song which are all very good in my opinion. Songs from the 70's, 80's, 90's and the 00's. You will be served no matter your preference. New additions to the gameplay using the DS' features are all in the "Battle" mode. Some attacks your oponent sends you can have you blow in the microphone to extinguised the fire on your guitard or rapidly sign a fan's t-shirt blocking your cords, which is honestly pretty neat. I would have given it a 9 out of 10 but the game IS painful on longer periods of play since you hold the whole thing with one wrist but the time you spend playing it (recommend shorter sessions), is a real blast! an okay attempt at a portable take on the guitar hero franchise. the gameplay certainly does not translate well to the small screen however
