I don't know how anyone could give this game less than a 9. It is, without a doubt, one of the best RPGs of ALL time. If not, THE best. It's a great DS port of the original with a few newly added additions that is definitely worth the experience and price tag all over again.

Brilliant game even back on the SNES. The story was the best part, and the control given to the player to alter the outcome at the ending depending on how much or how little you played beyond the basic soft-cap on the events that HAVE to be completed.

This game is a complete work of art! It didn't do anything wrong at all. Captivating characters, intriguing story, beautifully crafted mechanics, and not to mention the music. Chrono Trigger is definitely one of my favorite games, and I will cherish every ending I get.

Your main character is chrono, from what i see he is a teenage hero who has to save the worldd (OMG NO WAY) originol right? well actually it is. Chrono Trigger is a remake of a snes game and back then this was ground breaking stuff. I never played the originol Chrono Trigger but i have always heard about how awesome it was. When i heard of the DS remake i just had to get it. And i wish i hunted down a copy of it for the snes.. and a snes but ya this game is abosulty fantastic. After you start your journey with chronos you meet up with a princess that disguised as a normal person to blend in and excape the castle. (Again OMG NO WAY) After you meet up with her you meet one of your friends who is working on a teleporter. You test it out for her and it works. The princess wants to try it anfter you and from what i understood her amulet reacted to the teleporter and teleported hero into the past. You being the brave hero follow her. You find yourself back in the at the exact same spot you were before. Here you are intoduced to the combat mechanics. The combat mechanics are actually very cool and work very very well. If you ahve ever played Final Fantasy 10-2 you might know how this works better then i can explain it. There is a little bar and you ahve to wait for it to fill up to attack. (OMG THIS IS GROUND BREAKING STUFF) Yes its not turn base suprisingly. When your opponent attacks the bar stops and you have to wait for them to finish. Same if your allies attack. You can have up to 3 allys including chrono who can not be changed out. He always seems to be able to attack quicker then any of your allies and you can use combo attacks with your allies. A example if you use the combo of chrono adn lucca chrono runs up to the enemy and starts spinning his sword around (a move he can already do) But lucca uses her flame thrower and ignits the sword on fire and does burn damage to the enemy. The only down side is that when you try and use items it takes a few seconds to find everything and you feel rushed if you are in a boss battle. The intier game can be played using the touch screen. I found myself going back and fourth between the styles and the buttons. Thats only because im more used to using the buttons but when it comes to battle its best to use the syalus. I have to go (in study hall bell just rung) But before i do let me just say that this is one of the few games i actually finished for the DS. Im not much of a handheld gamer but this game is a classic and classics dont die. They are just reborn. Expand

It isn't one of the best games of all time, or rpgs, or jrpgs, it isn't the best of anything.

In 21st century we have so many so much better games. Here you will encounter nothing more than mediocre graphic, mediocre sound, poor story and frustrating gameplay. Honestly, I can't see why Chrono Trigger have all this cult.

However, it's ridiculous to compare a 17 year old game to Skyrim. I have never played any version of Chrono before this one and am very happy that I checked it out. The story is great, and the graphics and battle system were ground breaking in their day. I would also note that my 4 and 6 year old kids watched me play the entire game, from start to finish, and enjoyed the entire game. I believe that this says a lot about the universal appeal of this time twisting tale. Expand

There's almost no interesting spells or status effects, important debuff/buffs, every ability simply deals damage. Dual/triple techs are just boring variations on the same 'do tons of damage' or 'heal tons of HP' template. There's nothings that messes with Equipment-in battle, interact with terrain or change the very rules and mechanics of the battle, It's so bland and dull. Compare to any turn based games like SMT, SaGa, Etrian, even Chrono Cross or other FF that use ATB, etc. It simply lacks enough depth and challenge to be compelling since you have no real customization, builds or skills which hurts replayablity when every play-through is the same each **** There's barely any exploration, it's a time travel game that is somehow completely on rails. Your only choice is how soon you want to end the game by teleporting to Lavos which is the most disappointing aspect. There's no practical way to beat the game 'early' on your first run, so you pretty much have to get the standard ending, then all the other endings are NG+ replay gimmicks that basically reward you for being over-geared at particular stages of the otherwise linear game. The multiple endings are even shallower than the overall narrative: they're either superficial variations on the same happy ending/easter egg/joke endings. They're pointless and contribute nothing to the game.

Time travel is not even used in any meaningful way: instead of traveling back in time to prevent Lavos from becoming a threat, the characters travel forward in time to face him at the height of his power and beat him up.

There's no entertainment when the gameplay loop just spam high level techs with a occasional AoE heal. Who the **** finds this "fun"? It's repetitive and devoid of sustenance and dungeons might as well be linear corridors. It's not even only overly simple, it's overly TOO shallow. There is no challenge and variety is non-existent. Abusing double and triple techs really just destroys anything, and when Chrono receives the Luminary spell, you don't even have to see the pixels on the screen again . The lack of challenge is a major problem when that's 90% of the ****ing game. Its hard to remain engaged when you are just sitting there watching animations play out and not actively engaging with the mechanics. Even Magus' (which people like to claim is a difficult battle) is completely bypassed by doing the same thing you do all game. The game has zero customization which is supposed to be the point of a RPG? There is no player involvement, except in equipping new gear which is just select the best one in every scenario. You can't assign spells or roles to anyone they are just attackers and healers who basically play the same. It's boring as a rpg, and there's no strategy to the actual game part. Just look at the other rpgs that came out CT's era that surpass it in all areas
    >Phantasy Star IV
Came out over a year before CT. Has multi-character techniques like CT, more interesting character abilities, vehicle combat, and the ability to setup turn macros, lots of customization
    >Lunar
Character placement/positioning matters far more than in CT as characters/enemies have movement ranges & have to be adjacent for melee attacks, far more interesting movesets.
    >Lufia 2
Has limit breaks, a roguelike-dungeons, and far better non-combat gameplay with the tight puzzle & maze design.

Of the 100+ techs/spells in Chrono Trigger, less than 10 have a range that is something other than "single/all", and you can't even manually target their area of effect. Almost all of CT's tech/spells function just like they do in other jrpgs.

In addition, you have no way to influence positioning in any meaningful way, since your own characters can't move. Enemies can technically move, but they do so extremely sporadically and are just motionless 99% of the time. They also do the typical jrpg thing where they jump at you to attack and then jump back to their position on the battlefield, so their position is basically static.
    There is no friendly fire.
Your character's inability to move means you can't take advantage of enemy positioning like you can in other rpgs.

Your character's inability to move also greatly reduces the scope of tactics. In other rpgs, you might want to spread out characters to prevent them from all being struck by an enemy's area of effect attack. Or you might have to make a sacrifice: for instance, if one of your party members is in close proximity to the enemy, and attacking them would mean also damaging your own ally through friendly fire.

Even these basic tactical options are absent from CT.

CT is just a really poorly designed games for little kids, praise the visuals and music all you want, but the game has massive problems on the game part. 0/10.

I cannot stress enough how glad I am and how important it is that I played this game back in 1995. My life is seriously not the same because of it. Chrono Trigger first off did something extremely essential, it made a RPG more "user friendly" and ultimately set the bar for RPGs, even to this day. It is easy to get into and brings on the difficulty progressively. Everything here is so perfect, the graphics, the sounds and music, the characters, the battles, the skills/spells, and any other aspect of this game! You see the enemies you fight, it isn't randomized like in FF, you don't fight while exploring the world map, and battles can either be set on "wait" or "active." This is a nice feature that effects the difficulty. Also, all characters are capable of teamming up with 1 or 2 other characters and pulling off some kick ass double and triple techniques! These make for some of the coolest moves/spells in gaming history. Chrono Trigger for me has the BEST STORY of any game, and I am not just blowing hot air. The story here is absolutely stellar, you will be taken into a mystical world that will touch your emotions. You are literally required to go back and foward in time to save the world, and every step of the way is purely epic. The game has the best flow of any game I've ever played, everything just seems so right and fits together perfectly. I am seriously struggling to find the words and ways of describing the genious behind this game, you really need to check it out for yourself if you never have, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MY SCORE: 9.6/10 (I round it on Metacritic)

Almost 20 years later there's nothing much to say about this game that hasn't been said yet. One of my favourites. The amazing time-travelling themed plot drags you in and the smooth RPG gameplay makes it impossible to leave aside. A must have for anyone who like any kind of RPG gaming or any gamer at all. Epic story, awesome atmosphere and one of the best soundtracks ever made for videogames. Of course, being this game made in 1995 makes it obsolete, there's much more new and better graphics and also all kind of gameplay improvement, but the awesome characters, story, soundtrack and all that time-travelling (which I'm really fond of) cover up it's old age.

I don't recommend this game for anyone that started playing videogames after 2005/2006, since people like this are hard to catch the feeling and the awesomeness of this game!

I'm biased because I grew up with this game, but it's friggin amazing. The music, characters, combat, etc are fantastic.

The best thing is that you can combine abilities into dual or triple techs for greater effect. I'm not sure why more games don't have a system like this.

No, I do not "owe it to myself" to play this game. Unfortunately, I made the mistake to play it. It is fundamentally flawed.

The graphics for the most part are completely untouched from the origonal version, although some might complain about them looking dated, you have to keep it mind this is a game from the mid 1990s and for that time period, these graphics where considered excellent back then.

The story is beautifully written and is for the most part, pretty easy to follow, what events you do over the course of the game can change some elements of the story and even which of the multiple endings you get.

Gameplay is pretty standard for a 1990s RPG with the exception of the action timer and attack combos which where fairly new to RPGs back then but are rather common now.

The music is beautifully composed and had a lot of effort put into them.
Some of the music tracks that went unused in the the older versions of this game are now used in the DS version.

The game has replay value to those willing to replay the game to get all the rare equipment and to see more of the alternate endings.

If you are a major fan of RPG games or are just curious to see this masterpiece of a game that shows a major step in the evolution of RPG games, I would very much recommend a purchase.

I bought it for the PSX ten years ago but those menu load times... At any rate, I was really excited to finally play it due to being universally praised as one of the best if not the best RPG's ever. I was disappointed and in fact, I think this may just be the most overrated game of all time.

The combat is the best aspect of CT by far. Fun and completely unique at the time, I wish there had been more games modeled after it because I very much enjoyed it even now, and I never felt bored due to the combat. There are techniques to unlock and combine, and the strategy introduced by deciding to wait and use 2 or 3 allies for a skill is a lot of fun. The fact that this was the first game where combat was on the main map is very cool and works great.

Secondly, the graphics are beautiful, and still perfectly acceptable and playable now in 2013. I remember back then seeing pictures of Chrono on the bridge and thinking about how incredible the game looked. The variety of animations for each attack and technique really go a long way towards making things feel fun and fresh. The colors are bright and the spells are impressive.

The music was very good for the most part. I know a lot of people say the music is incredible and for a cartridge it probably was, but I'm spoiled by even earlier games on the Sega CD that had truly fantastic music, specifically the LUNAR series. Still, CT's music was pleasant, I enjoyed it, and it got the job done.

The several side-quests and how they change the future are cool and interestingly done. Personally I don't think there was enough change at certain points in time, and while I won't hold that specifically against the game, this leads me to the bad...

The premise of the plot was good, however, I find that the ball was dropped here in execution... again because of the lack of depth and HORRIBLE pacing. The story is very simple, and virtually everything in the first ten hours of the game progress through happenstance. The problem with that? The game is only 20 hours long!! This is by far the shortest RPG I've ever played and from one plot point to the next, the story moves along with very little discussion or explanation, major plot points are explained and over with nothing more than a sentence or two. Less time is dedicated to major story quests than most games side quests, and you just kind of stumble into things where nothing in the story has any weight because it's all over and done so quickly.

While I generally thought the characters were alright, the issue with the story is represented in them as well. I would like to have loved the characters, I really would. In the end I just know so little about them though. Everyone has so little to say and at any opportunity to express anything, discuss story, or get to know them at all, it's over in a couple of sentences, they're just so flat with little meaningful dialog between themselves and anybody else in the game world. This leaves me with no particular love or interest with anybody from the game.

I honestly don't understand why this game would have been so highly regarded. It had tremendous potential, to be sure, but it never really got off the ground. Given the length alone I would have never spent money on something so short, and yes, I played through to the end of the game on my first playthrough. The extra endings are fun to see and can add some replay value, but the game is so short, and the story so thin that playing again and again would be very repetitive. Besides that, a lot of the endings don't really add a lot or tell only part of the story, and some are accessible after very little time. I won't get into the lack of variety in the area's and how strange a decision it was to not make legitimate towns with everything accessible on the over world but oh well. Anyway, I think my score is generous, I wish there had been more to experience.

The short lines spoken by your NPCs during cutscenes really help flesh out the characters and engagement, but more character interactions (like Dragon Age or Tales of Symphonia) would be nice. But hey, this is a rather old game -- I can overlook that.

The time travel element played past experience well & instantly engaged you in new areas, as you wonder what has changed between the different times, and why.

The combat system is simple yet effective. Item management was simple and unobtrusive. Standard JRPG fare, but well done. The story and world are the main attraction. Multiple endings were a nice touch.

Obviously, as with everything, there are some minor flaws - on occasion, for example, when an enemy dies in battle the game will auto-target another in a way which makes no sense, and the anime cutscenes (which, I should add, are completely optional) feel somewhat out of place. But really, those are the only negative things one can possibly say about such a glorious experience, and they are so insignificant in the face of everything else in the game that it feels cruel even to mention that they exist.
To those who are interested, but for whatever reason have not bought the game yet - buy it. I cannot see that there is any room for disappointment.

Originally released on the Super Nintendo in 1995 this, slightly enhanced, DS remake yet again demonstrates exactly why Chrono Trigger is considered a classic of the genre.

It is worth mentioning from the start that if you played the SNES or PSone version you will find very little new here aside from a few touchscreen features and extra options. Despite this Chrono Trigger still stands the test of time admirably in large part thanks to the brilliantly told story that puts most modern efforts to shame. Anyone who has played any of the earlier entries in the Final Fantasy series will know what to expect in terms of gameplay. Setting out to save the world you soon run into like minded people happy to join your quest and building a balanced party is, as ever, key to success.

Player initiated and random turn based battles are present but do not occur too often allowing the game to maintain a good pace throughout. Add to this a large(ish) world map that the player is free to explore as well as thirteen possible endings and it is hard to believe that this game is nearly two decades old.

I'm usually not a fan of Japanese RPGs. My experience with them is fairly limited. In fact, I received it as a surprise gift. I knew it was considered to be one of the best, but the genre had always intimidated me, and I was reluctant to play it.

However, once I finally set down to play it, I became engrossed with the games battle system and story. The battle system is unique in that time is continuously flowing. It's not turn-based, but rather actions are made based on speed and how quick you think. Sometimes, you'll need the fast paced movements, and other times, there's an advantage for waiting on your opponent. With character combos and other combat moves, this system is complex, and you'll always find new ways to play with the games great cast.

The games hilarious and often moving story also grabbed my attention. Early in the game, you participate in a festival, and some of the actions you take in the festival will come back to get you in a trial when you're falsely accused of stealing the nation's princess. Time travel intertwines the whole story in an intelligent way, and provided many excellent locales. The story is like none I had ever experienced, and I was enthralled from start to finish.

The music is also quite enjoyable and aids in the action, particularly facing the dark mage, hearing the wind blow and the maniac screams of laughter. It's still eerie and effective, despite the age this game has.

I'm glad I got this surprise. It's now one of my all-time favorite games, and one that I would recommend to anyone who might be curious about fantasy RPGs such as this.

The greatest game of all time...NOW PORTABLE! How cool is that? Comes with extra features and even a new ending (and a few items) to discover that ties it to the sequel, Chrono Cross (even hinting at Guile in CC being Magus all along!) Not to mention some cool extra stuff. Id say that all it needed was updated HD graphics (similar to the Street Fighter II Turbo and Earthworm Jim HD remakes for PSN), but why bother to try to add more cards to the house of cards. Best leave a good thing be.
Game play is fast to execute like the SNES version and even has the PS1 cutscemes. Truly a complete version. There has never been a JRPG as good since. This game (although short) is still my favorite game of all time.

For it's time, the graphics/music/gameplay were top drawer and, as an old school gamer, I wouldn't consider them of utmost importance anyway. A decent RPG needs three things...
Decent characters, character development and an involving storyline. CT falls down on the first two, and because the storyline of the game isn't actually that long, it's all over far too quickly.
It doesn't help that the game isn't that difficult either. The map system allows you to skip past most fights, and the one's your forced into can be overcome without much effort.
Considering the number of much better games in the genre on the SNES, this is a game I would recommend you play, but it isn't one I'd suggest you develop any real expectations of.

I LOVE role playing games and before this had a blast with dragon quest. This one is EXTREMELY boring and hard to navigate. The graphics are so pixelated it's hard to tell what is a treasure chest, or a road, or a person. Everything is REALLY tiny and difficult to view, and I find the game play really boring, and the battles even more so.

I loved the co-op story mode in the first one, but the side missions in this version aren't in anyway a replacement. I was really looking forward to playing alongside my friends online, so it's a real let down that the option wasn't included. The deal is simple, Chrono trigger offers an amazing set of characters (both friendly and rivals), with constant and consistent character development till the end of the game. Hell even Townsfolk have storylines that you can explore VIA time travel. The world is absolutely HUGE and you can visit it in multiple time periods, which expand on it even more and you can instantly see the outcome of your actions. The story line to this game is great and fulfilling, leaving nothing to be desired, really. All the plot twists and the world secrets make you feel as if you're exploring yourself, making up some of the best immersion experiences I've ever felt in a video game.

I could go on for ever, but games like this and system shock 2 etc compared to today's game industries, make me think what a friend of mine always claims. That video games have gone backwards since then.

    TL;DR : 10/10 would play again.

The year was 2008, and all I wanted for my birthday was one game, a game that had just come out in November, a game I had specifically showed my mother to get, Kirby Super Star Ultra. I woke up early the morning of my birthday, saw a gift that was in the shape of a DS game case, and hastily I tore away the gift wrapping. Inside, wasn't the game I had picked out. Instead, it was Chrono Trigger. In my mind, this was the best mistake my mom had made since I was conceived.

Everything about Chrono Trigger is outstanding. The beginning opening with the festival is an example that shows most of what I mean. It teaches you about core game mechanics without seeming like a tutorial, it subtly constructs the world and the plot through every action you take, it endears the player to Marle which ensures that the player has a personal motivation for acting rather than just being told, "that's what your character would do," and does this all while being a lighthearted romp in a festival. It ensures that you feel invested before the story starts, and that once the story does start you will be ready. Furthermore, the hidden ramifications of your actions at the festival, and having no characters forcing Crono to do anything, highlight the influence that personal choices have in the narrative. The game is a seamless blend between the overarching plot and every action you take. Every main quest, every side quest, and every character decision is all part of accomplishing your main objective in the game. The characters all have distinctive personalities and unique movesets that mesh differently with everyone else, encouraging you to play with everyone, and endearing you to everyone.

I could ramble on and on, but seeing all the other reviews it's unnecessary at this point. To summarize, Chrono Trigger is by far, the best JRPG, if not the best RPG, I've ever played.

Chrono Trigger is one of those rare games that, even 25 years after its original release, can still be thoroughly enjoyed and is still impressive in many ways. The story is one of a kind, a unique adventure that I haven't seen anywhere else. It's gameplay is easy to get used to but still offers depth and variety. It also gets better the further you get into the story with new abilities and gameplay mechanics being unlocked at a constant rate. The characters may seem a bit generic at the beginning but by the end they have all developed in interesting and unexpected ways. The villains are memorable, diverse and complex. It takes common premises of things like a Dark Lord and Evil Queen and totally reinvents them giving the ideas context and substance. Magic, time travel, and science all blend together in a way that is totally backed up by the story's lore. I didn't play this game until the DS release, even years after the original release I can say that it is not overrated. It obviously isn't as impressive as it once was but it is still one of the best games I have ever played. It is like a fusion between Final Fantasy and the Legend of Zelda and in my opinion it is better than both the Zelda and Final Fantasy games of its time.

Gameplay/Progression 9 - Unlike most RPGs that have a lot of menus and stats, Chrono Trigger sticks to the essentials. Everything that you are given to work with in the opening of the game is very easy to understand and use without reading through tutorials. You are then given new characters and abilities and a gradual rate giving you enough time to understand each gameplay element before a new one is introduced. By the late game combat is quite complex but it still feels simple because of the way the game eases you into it. The game also makes travel much easier and more enjoyable than most games by making enemies visible so that you can often avoid them if you want to get somewhere quickly. Many vehicles and methods of travel are introduced throughout the game allowing quicker access to far off locations. The vehicles also unlock at a good pace that makes sense within the story. Magic is well explained and fits well into battle techniques. Since each character has different abilities the team you use can dramatically change your combat abilities. Unfortunately you cannot switch out party members in combat. Outside of combat gameplay is quite varied with things like racing sections and environment based puzzles. I thought the puzzles could have been better but there are some good ones and they are enough to keep things interesting. Combat is always kept interesting because of the variety of enemies you face. There are over 25 bosses and almost none of them are repetitive.

Story 10 - I have never experienced another story like Chrono Triggers' in any medium. It blends science, magic, aliens, and time travel seamlessly. It has funny light moments but is also deep and dark. The story starts off very simple and light but it quickly and naturally brings you into a bigger story. The Dark Lord Magus makes a compelling villain but what makes him so much better is how his story then blends into far bigger events. Each time period that you travel to offers its own story arc while still contributing to the main story as a whole. Lavos is a very interesting game monster that is used in a way that is complex and believable. It is so much more than just a big boss it plays a meaningful role in the development of the story, the characters, the world building and the magic system. Everything fits together almost perfectly.

World 9 - While the world is fairly small and limited it is full of variety and complexity. Every time period offers something new to see and experience. Each area and time also has its own aesthetic so it never gets boring. The best part about the world for me is the way everything is explained and makes sense within the story. It is very rare to see game worlds that use time travel over multiple periods of time and even more rare to see it done well. It is so satisfying to travel to each different time in order to both affect events, gain items and teammates that are essential in the ultimate goal of your quest. The world is meaningfully changed by time and the decisions you make within the timeline. It is constantly changing and so each new area and time that you visit offers new experiences. The world evolves in interesting ways that keep you guessing and wanting to see more.

Characters 8 - The characters are all interesting in their own way and each member of the cast offers something unique. Some of them are a bit basic though, not quite up to the level found in the better Final Fantasy games.

There is so much more I could say about the game. The soundtrack is still one of the best of all time and the visuals while old are well designed and imaginative.

I'll start with a disclaimer: this review is not based on nostalgia, I first played this game over 10 years after its original SNES release, and I don't have any nostalgia towards JRPGs in general either. Also I rate the game based on today's standards, not from when I first played it or when it was first released.

    Graphics: 7/10
This is the one part of the game that has been outdone by modern games. Still, the graphics are quite good even today. There is a timeless quality to the 16-bit sprite graphics, as evidenced by the fact that such games are still being developed today. The artwork is excellent, and it has been very nicely implemented into sprite graphics.

    Soundtrack: 10/10
One of the best game soundtracks ever made. There are other games with just as excellent soundtracks, but this one is certainly up there among the best. Pretty much every piece is great, and many themes are so memorable they stay with you for life.

    Characters: 10/10
This is where I'll start confronting the (few) negative user reviews of this game. If you think the characters are weak, I challenge you to say you've forgotten a single one of them, or when you first met them. Other than Crono himself, who acts as the silent protagonist, every major character is well-developed and unique, and they are all memorable. The character development is also excellently implemented through the character-specific side quests. Maybe you expected character development through extensive dialogue, but this is a game and not a book. Many games force you to read books' worth of text just so they can develop the characters. Not Chrono Trigger. This ties into gameplay, but the character development never interferes with the gameplay, which is a mark of its brilliance.

    Story: 10/10
The story and storytelling in this game is by far the best of any game I've played, and it is my favorite aspect of this game. Again, as I said about the character development, many games tell their story mainly by text, which would make for a good book. Many games tell their story through excessive cutscenes, which would make for a good movie. Chrono Trigger tells the story through gameplay, which makes for a stellar game. And yes, it is a short game. But no, it is not a short story. From start to finish, this game is both gameplay and storytelling at the same time. It doesn't pause the gameplay to start telling the story. It doesn't pause the storytelling so you can play the game. It gives you both aspects simultaneously. Yes, there is dialogue through text, but it is never intrusive to the gameplay. And the story itself is excellent, with some brilliant plot twists and captivating moments.

    Gameplay: 10/10
This is the most important aspect of a game, and I believe is is the most subjective aspect to review. Different people like different types of games. No type of gameplay appeals to everyone. For example, I wouldn't buy a sports game or a multiplayer shooter no matter how good the game is, because I don't particularly like those types of gameplay. But I wouldn't rate such a game a 3 if I were to review one, unless the game was actually bad. For me to give such a low rating, the game would have to be functionally bad or obsolete. Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, is as close to functionally perfect as a game can be. The difficulty level is perfectly tuned, so as to appeal to people new to the genre as well as experienced JRPG players. And it manages to do this without having custom difficulty. The gameplay is just never compromised in this game. Again, if you don't like it, that's fine. Maybe you expected something else and you feel disappointed. But it is NOT a bad game. It is NOT an obsolete game. It is NOT only beloved because of nostalgia. It is a masterpiece, as evidenced by its universal acclaim.

    Overall: 10/10

However, he quickly gets dragged through time on a mission that includes early man’s struggles with the Reptites (a race of highly intelligent reptiles), an overzealous queen seeking immortality, Guardia’s war with an enemy wizard four-hundred years prior to the fair, and a depressing future that Crono and his friends must prevent. Only thing that holds it back is the numerous pacing issues & somewhat lackluster characters

    Graphics: 10/10
Now, this does not even come to close to standing up to modern games in the area of graphics, but it did raise the bar for its time. Seeing as how Square rarely fails in this category, it comes as no surprise that the backgrounds are nicely detailed (such as a night sky full of stars and sunlight sparkling on the water) and the different sprites for each era are mostly unique (it seems they really love to re-color that imp sprite though).

    Audio: 9/10
    Original:
The soundtrack for Chrono Trigger is beautiful. There are songs that will make you sad—whether or not you’ll cry (or admit to crying) of course is a person-by-person result—and others that will get you pumped for the approaching adventures. Generally, there is only one moment in the game in which the music does not fit, and it plays as a joke anyway. The sound effects all seem to fit their respective actions.

    Gameplay: 9/10
Chrono Trigger uses the turn-based combat system with options to have real-time or not. Your characters advance in levels by gaining experience from battle (bet you didn’t see that coming). They also learn “techs” (presumably short for “techniques”) from their experience in these battles. The section of the combat system that really stands out is the use of double techs and triple techs. As the name implies, the characters use their special attacks together to form more powerful ones. However, the best part is without a doubt the lack of random battles. That’s right, you have monsters on screen and the occasional set encounter that you can’t see coming, but you will NEVER get into a battle while simply walking around the world map. Overall, the gameplay is enjoyable (unless you just can’t stand a turn-based battle).

    Replay Value: 10/10
Chrono Trigger is the type of game that you just can’t stand to put down (even after beating it). Fortunately, the developers had the foresight to realize this and made thirteen endings. Perhaps more influential than the vast amount of endings is the new game + feature. You start the game with the same items, techs, and character levels from your last save before beating the game. You can quite possibly find yourself playing through the game far more than the thirteen times for the different endings.

Overall: One of the best games ever, but still overhyped & not the flawless masterpiece everyone proclaims it to be. Chrono Cross was a better overall game, but that doesn't take aways from this game's quality at all. Overall: 9.6/10

(and I'm not just talking about Magus, but damn he is fine) The combat system does a lot with very little, having depth while being really simple to understand. The extra content (new game plus, arena, dimensional vortexes, and one or two other things) are fantastic additions as well. I can't say enough good things about this game. It serves as a good first JRPG for anybody to get into and is my personal favorite game of all time.

Cons: You don't get to see Magus nude

This game gets a 10 from me because of story, music, and at the time of my actual playing combat. However, the combat has not aged well.

Let me start by saying this game is a masterpiece. It should not have less than a 8, and it probably only does because of age. The music alone gets it to an 8. At this point in time, the graphics are an actual art form instead of the best way to

At this point in time, the graphics are an actual art form instead of the best way to present a game. Pixel Art, is really what it is now and I still greatly enjoy it.

If you cant stand old school 'ATB' gauge filling combat or pixel art stay away, if neither of these bother you don't skip over this masterpiece.

Near perfect game created by the dream team. Wonderful story and character progression, accompanied by artistic sprites and textures in front of thankfully unnoticed parallaxes. The center around time can be a complex narrative for newcomers of the RPG world, but that is really the only thing I can make a negative point about. Which is nothing. The best game i have ever played. If someone were to strip all content from the game minus the soundtrack it would at least deserve a 6 out of 10. The more i played this game the more i felt like it was a collection of pieces of art and at the end of the game i thought i witnessed the 16 bit Sistine chapel painting. As someone writes music on a daily basis Yasunori Mitsuda's work speaks to me and is truly the best that is out there. Even as someone who hated turn based rpg's I highly recommend this game to anyone Expand

How did I let this RPG pass me by as a child? I played this on recommendation from several fellow RPG lovers. Have to say I was not disappointed and I can see that 'Crono Trigger' truly lives up to its 'hype'. (This game should have been included on the SNES classic).

Despite my criticisms, Chrono Trigger is an amazing adventure and a required purchase for ardent fans and anyone who's never played the game before. [Holiday 2008, p.82]

The game is virtually unchanged in its core, having a new script re-write, but retaining the visuals, music, character designs, interface styles, and options of the source material. At the same time, Square Enix also ensures that this is the definitive version of Chrono Trigger out there, as the game comes complete with every option you could ever want for touch vs. button control, two or single screen display, or game pacing and difficulty.
