So it is an interesting game that it doesn’t even compare with the Final Fantasy. Very cool storyline. Characters are gorgeous and spelled personality. There are a lot of bosses in the game and there should be different tactics. This game is revolutionary for 1995. 13 endings, 13 endings, Karl. In general, 10/10.

This is the best RPG of the 16-bit era. Didn't have the chance to play it when it came out, but it still holds up, and fits very well in the scene of retro releases. Probably the pinnacle of JRPGs. It has a few surprises up it's sleeve, and more than a few very familiar elements of the genre.
It does start out fairly linear but it opens up rather quickly and it definitely is an adventure

I played it years ago when SNES was in it's prime. The game holds up on DS and even on the steam version where I'm currently playing jointly with my wife who is also loving the experience. The DS version added an extra dungeon that felt unnecessary but also not intrusive. Across the various versions there are some small translation differences but they don't bother me much- it's largely the same game.

The story is not simple, but it feels simple it's easy enough to understand but the game has a couple of terrific twists that keep you guessing. There is also a suprising amount of optional content and side quests that really enrich the game and add more depth to the characters. In my younger years I was suprised how technical the game seemed to be both with these side quest options (especially later in the game) and the combat, including dual combo's and triple techs was amazing back in the day and is still super fun today. I'm shocked more games havn't adopted this style of RPG to be honest.

The character development was great in it's prime and still very much holds up. The characters each have personalities and animations that draw you in. The sprite like style of the graphic holds up much more than I thought it would over the years... again it was well done in it's prime and still looks solid today. The music is amazing and iconic in my opinion and I can hum most of the major themes by heart (i've enjoyed the re-imagined versions and chrono symphonic is a great listen for long time fans.)

Spoilers. It's an adventure across time but the ways that you change the timelines felt very significant back in the SNES days and they still do a good job of being solid gameplay mechanics. There arn't any real puzzles but you have to navigate the world in different areas and times in order to gain access to the story and eventually side quests. This game is wholesome, complex, fun, and replayable for die hard fans. I play it about once every 5-10 years at this point. It's my favorite RPG. :)

In this whole gameplay repeatability typical of jRGS, it is characterized by overall simplicity that makes playing pleasant.

The game shines storywise. The major plot is interesting to follow, but it also doesn't outshine the side stories and character developments of each member of our colorful cast. The moments of peril are exciting to witness, and the emotional bits will leave you with deep feelings. There are also some plot twists that remain a novelty to this day in regular JRPG storytelling, which is guaranteed to take the player by surprise.
The graphic part also still holds up to this day to Pixel Art standards, thanks in great part to the character and world designs, making each person you meet and place you traverse memorable. Also, the concept design by manga legend Akira Toriyama is also an immense plus to leave everything oozing with style.
Unfortunately, the experience suffers in regards to gameplay. While the fights manage to still be visually enjoyable with the dynamic movement of the characters, the interactivity per se is not much, and the whole thing might get repetitive when it comes to facing regular monsters. Also, navigating certain areas sometimes can be frustrating due to the limited movement on the overworld. Lastly, the pacing of certain moments with a heavier focus on the story might leave you that feeling of "Okay, can I play now?".
In conclusion, despite the design flaws of its time, Chrono Trigger still manages to be a great game and a real classic, as well as really deserving of the remake treatment that many old games are getting in these modern times.

    The Good

    - interesting to hear monsters talking. Their dialogue is pretty amusing.

    - being able to replace party members at any time is very convenient. Party members that are on the sidelines also scale in level, which is good because when you want to switch them in they won't be super underleveled.

    - there's not too many buffs and debuffs which I personally like. It has the basic ones, which makes the game not too shallow and not too deep. Games like FF have so many buffs and debuffs, sometimes I lose track of them and it just get a little confusing.

    - the battle animations are phenomenal for its time

    - it's nice that they wrote dialog for each character so the cutscenes will still fuel organic no matter who you have in the party.

    - I like the fact that KO'd teammates have 1 HP after battle. This way I don't have to waste a revive on them

    - debuffs don't stick after battle. Don't have go into menu just to heal after. Saves time.

    - really interesting enemies. Like snakes that absorb each other.

    - before pokemon did the trainer line of sight battles, Chrono trigger did it. Those eye balls in the time egg chapter, you have to wait til they close their eyes if you want to avoid them. The rats in proto dome in lab 32, you have to dodge rats to not get stuff stolen from u.

    - moving around during text box is great. Allows freedom to check out the area or leave without having to mash to the end.

    - the menuing is very very fluent and informative, without being over complicated.

    - button remap is really nice. Allows full customization.

    - music is awesome

    - Chrono trigger was way ahead of its time. With the battle system, with the menu layout, with wild encounters, with interesting environments interactions, and enemy types. And even story structure, the whole time travel aspect actually worked out pretty well, with surprises like magus being that kid from zeal, and being able to resurrect Chrono, and all those other characters that's came to the future whom you meet later on in the past. for a piece of media, not even just a video game, this was very innovative.

    - different dialogue lines depending on who's with the party during cutscene

    - seeing the game over scene after losing to lavos invokes a certain feeling.

    The Bad

    - it's difficult to see the difference between second floor and first floor. As well as corridors that are behind walls. I know the SNES is quite primitive, but I still feel they could have done a better job. Maybe they could have added better Shadow sprites.

    - I wish Chrono had dialogue. Mute protagonists can work but I don't think they did it well here. The other characters have plenty of dialogue, but they don't really interact with Chrono directly. When they refer to Chrono they say it in the way as if he isn't there. So most of the interactions in the cut scenes of the party makes it seem like Chrono is like a ghost. Which in turn makes me feel like a ghost. Mute protagonist is supposed to make you feel like you are in their shoes, and I am in the shoes of an empty husk. Link is an example of a mute protagonist done well. Other characters refer to him directly, and he does have to do nuisances like facial expressions, physical reactions.

    - I felt they could have used maybe just a set of different variation of the reaction sprites. There's literally only one suprise sprite. Sometimes the char seem like they are overreacting cause the sprite is so dramatic.

    - I couldn't go back to kingdom of zeal to get black rock, meaning eternal darkness tech was lost to me forever. I hate not being to back track to important things. I can understand an aesthetic item being missable, but not an item that allows me to learn one of the strongest spells in the game. Missed forever. After zeal fell, the Blackstone should still be attainable either somewhere else, or logically, I should be able to travel back in time, back before zeal fell, to attain black rock.

I myself first played the game on a ROM, and truly, using PC controls or even a gamepad doesn't cut it. The extra side-missions are great, the cutscenes aren't really my style but they flesh things out well, and the music box lets you listen to some of gaming's greatest compositions whenever you like. The arena fell quite short, and I too was hoping for something involving co-op, but disregarding that it is a brilliant game with one of the greatest stories in RPG history and a depth that has sunk right into gamers since its first release. And personally, I'm glad they didn't decide to "juice up" the game by adding the DS's low-poly 3D capabilities; retro graphics seem to flesh out characters better by having us focus on dialogue rather than flamboyant body movements. It's worth the forty dollars if you are a fan of RPGs, a fan of stories worth novels, of quotably controversial philosophy, or simply the roots of some aspects of gaming that made it what it is today that in my opinion need to be rediscovered by our graphics- and gameplay-oriented developers in modern times. Chrono Trigger makes a triumphant return on the Nintendo DS. While the new monster arena may be lackluster, and the new dungeons not quite up to snuff, the new DS battle control scheme makes the gameplay as slick as ever, and the other extras included in this port make it a worthwhile release of one of histories favorite adventures.

I've a few choice words about this "remake". The graphics are still SNES quality, and other than... Tacked-on touchscreen controls (why do I have to double-tap every selection during battle? Doesn't that defeat the purpose? Even the Pokemon DS game has better touch controls than that) Animation sequences that add nothing to the game (they feel like nothing more than a throwback I've a few choice words about this "remake". Even the Pokemon DS game has better touch controls than that) Animation sequences that add nothing to the game (they feel like nothing more than a throwback to an FMV-happy PSX era which ironically dates the game even more than the sprite-based graphics) An uninspired monster battle arena (a tired genre which even the reviewers hate and has little to do with the main storyline) ...it's practically a direct port. For this, you to pay a premium $40 pricetag for a 10+ year old game that most people have played to death. When Capcom released Resident Evil Wii it was a 2-year old game came improved controls, every feature available AND a cheaper price. I LOVE playing Chrono Trigger on a handheld, and I LOVE having the top screen menu-free during battle, but the only reason this game gets insanely-perfect reviews is a decade's worth of fanboy deprivation. There is not much new stuff to say about Chrono Trigger DS, people have already seen it, played and loved it... Once again the greatest game of all time returns on a perfect edition that brings the best RPG elements of the last century to the tweaks of the current one. Overall, a game that has no equal and that finally will be accessible even for the PAL territories... a must play!

Chrono Trigger has aged well, and holds up even to today's best titles. I love how Chrono Trigger has a focus on exploration. There are caves, forests and castles to be explored in the different time eras of Chrono Trigger. You may explore the Dark Ages, the Future and Prehistoric eras, with a few other eras in between. Throw in some hidden items, secrets, and treasures for motivation, and you've got an amazing exploration experience. Chrono Trigger has some action too, to add some excitement to your adventurous mind. There are no random encounters, and the battle system is deep, but easy to get into. If you're familiar with the Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger will feel very familiar to you. CT runs utilizes a modified version of the ATB. You'll encounter ghouls and goblins, robots and mutants, dinosaurs and knights and many more. The boss fights are enjoyable and exciting, and the more important boss fights are just plain epic. Three of my favorite boss fights ever happen in this game. The music in CT is just phenomenal. There are many different tunes to fit the mood. They give each time era a different vibe, and represents them well. The background music is memorable and catchy, while the battle themes set you up for a huge climactic fight. Listen to a few tunes on Youtube or something, I'm sure you'll be impressed. Chrono Trigger's soundtrack is what they make it out to be, it's fantastic. This game is old, and the graphics are certainly showing their age. They still look good though; it's certainly one of the prettier DS games. Chrono Trigger was a technical masterpiece during it's time... but is still an amazing artistic piece today. The different time periods look great, and it's easy to tell one from the other, and the locales you'll visit are just beautiful. Those with a strong imagination could probably image themselves in these epic landscapes. The characters in CT are colorful, and give off an indescribable charm. The characters just somehow make you feel younger. I don't know how, but they do. Each character has a distinct personality, and have an interesting past to uncover. My favorite character is Frog, a loyal knight to the Kingdom of Guardia. Chrono Trigger has a now very overused story, but it's still very interesting today, because of it's unique method of story telling; time travel. Each era is different and have many different problems to solve, but they all connect at one point. Each era is like a puzzle piece; you'll have to fit them together to find the big image. There are only two things I disliked in the game. Number one, the easy-ish difficulty, and number two, the the bland and repetitive extras introduced in this port. In conclusion, you must play Chrono Trigger. It's an amazing RPG, and is widely considered to be one of the best games ever. It's one of the best games I've played, and has taken top spot for favorite RPG. There's a good chance for it to become one of yours. 10/10 Recommended 110%. Note: Chrono Trigger is without a doubt one of the best games I've played, but don't let that boost your expectations to ridiculous heights. Come into the game with lower, more realistic expectations, so there's a good chance of having zero disappointments. That said, enjoy the game. Expand

FIghting is fun and interesting, but one thing that disappointed me was the repetition. Combat against regular enemies is as simple as mashing the 'A' button to attack, and does not get very complicated unless you are fighting bosses. The game makes great usage of side quests, and before finishing the game, you can take on a load of other small quests. Another feature Chrono Trigger offers is the Pet Arena, a fun feature that has no effect on your actual game. You get a pet, teach it attacks, let it evolve, similar to Pokemon, and duel it out with the computer. Another thing Chrono Trigger seems to lack in is the multiplayer function. It lacks something like a co-op storyline, which would be a fun addition, but nevertheless, this game is definitely one of my favorite. Expand
