Too much of the same old, tired game - and the new doesn't cut it at all...

It has the same great gameplay mechanics as the first game, a solid soundtrack and fun characters. By all accounts, this *should* be another banger. The problem is, it lacks the smart map design that made the first Crazy Taxi such an immediately playable experience.

It has the same great gameplay mechanics as the first game, a solid soundtrack and fun characters. By all accounts, this *should* be another banger. The problem is, it lacks the smart map design that made the first Crazy Taxi such an immediately playable experience.

In the original Crazy Taxi, the map was very linear, and each section was visually distinct. This made it so the player was rarely lost and always had a clear path to where they needed to go. The only barrier was execution. In Crazy Taxi 2, it's just the opposite. The map is denser, and every section of this big city blends together visually. Unless the whole city is memorized, the player will never be able to orient themselves.

It creates a roadblock for the player before they can enjoy that addictive Crazy Taxi gameplay. It strikes me as the developers not quite understanding the secret sauce that made the first game such a hit. It has the mechanics, the style, the music, but not the glue that holds it all together.

  1. Unfortunately, the game's graphics are about the same as its predecessor's, and no multiplayer split-screen or online modes are offered.
  2. The game is constructed on a solid engine, offers exceptional gameplay, and has some of the best graphics seen in any DC title to date. While the game doesn’t make the revolutionary leap many fans were looking for, what’s here is rock solid.

Crazy Taxi 2 may have new gameplay mechanics, new cities, and new mini-games than Crazy Taxi but that doesn't make it better than the original. And like I said above, there are some controls issues that I noticed, but that really doesn't effect the enjoyment of the game.
