I don't understand what they were thinking. The game is good... at first. At a glance, the game looks to be a Kirby boss rush, but with a choose which one you want to do, with different classes. Next is the Vigor System, the dumbest thing to EVER come out of any game. It makes you wait 5 minutes before ONE is restored. You can speed up the process, but you shouldn't. Next is the leveling. The game tells you to level up if you are having trouble. You can't re-fight bosses over and over again, because of Vigor! I believe that once you beat all the "Heroic Missions" for a boss, then you should be able to fight that boss again without using vigor.

My final problem is Gem Apples. They're just another collectible, but they're used for so much! They're needed for unlocking quests, getting better equipment, restoring Vigor (NEVER USE THEM FOR VIGOR!) and for buying support items. The game hints at you buying them, which is another problem in itself. If you happen to have some spare money in your Eshop account, then buy some, but only do it on Sunday's.

This game isn't a total mess, but it's so flawed that they should make some fixes. Take out Vigor, make Gem Apples more common, and add another class. Whatever, Nintendo's probable forgot about this trash pile (I said it wasn't a total mess, but it's still a mess.) Overall, Nintendo should patch the game and make it better for the people (Like me :) who haven't finished it.

Of all the barefaced money-siphoning tactics implemented by Nintendo in recent years, making a carbon copy of a multiplayer boss rush minigame from the last REAL Kirby game and gating the progression of fights behind a paywall is perhaps the most cynical attempt yet.

Of all the barefaced money-siphoning tactics implemented by Nintendo in recent years, making a carbon copy of a multiplayer boss rush minigame from the last REAL Kirby game and gating the progression of fights behind a paywall is perhaps the most cynical attempt yet.

As with the original Kirby Clash minigame, You get to fight a series of boss monsters in single-screen featureless arenas as a party of four, playing one of four classes (sword, hammer, healer or mage). New fights have been added and you now have the option of recruiting generally competent AI assistants either from stock, or street-and-spotpassing. Beyond the first handful of fights and your starting equipment, everything in the game must be unlocked with the premium currency of Gem Apples, the starting supply and daily replenishing source of which will of course not get you very far.

Unfortunately, the entire game quickly devolves into a pay-to-win mess. Spend apples to unlock enemies; spend apples on better equipment to actually be able to beat those enemies; spend apples to unlock better equipment for the classes you aren't even maining just so you can complete the class-specific level tasks to earn a tiny fraction of those apples back; lather, rinse, repeat.

The fact that you need to grind fights repeatedly to accumulate extra materials before being allowed to pay for the weapon does not make it any less pay-to-win; you simply progress down the equipment list grabbing whatever has the highest numbers on it at the time. The materials system only serves to pad out the time you'll spend playing -- which, incidentally, you are also restricted on, as each fight costs "vigor" of which you have a limited supply and recharges very slowly.

The only difficulty curve that exists in the game is the time limit in which you have to fight the enemies, and how much damage they do if you don't have the best available armor. Every single fight is otherwise a plodding, uneventful grind of trying to smack the biggest numbers you can out of your opponent. The visual aesthetic is well realized and all the equipment and effects are quite snazzy to look at, but it ultimately ends up feeling like you're playing a very expensive mobile game. What is here has very little to do with intuitive game design or Kirby in general, and everything to do with sugar-coating a minimalist concept in the interest of lining Nintendo's pockets.

At its best, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe is like going to Disneyworld as a child and getting mugged by Goofy and Mickey for crack money. Every single item, every single quest, and all the energy you need to run them is monetized. The whole thing comes out to $27 - spoiler? - but that isn't really the point: even though it would be low on content for a $30 game, at least if it were sold for a ticket price like that you could progress through it naturally. As is, you can't - there's a lot of grinding of the already extremely limited level selection. There's no online multiplayer, and playing with the AIs feels kind of like running an extremely simplified WOW raid with a team of caffeinated eight year olds. Expand

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe -

In the context of being a free extra attached to Planet Robobot, I thought Team Kirby Clash was great. Like this? Not so much. [Issue #28 – July/August 2017, p. 19]
