    A perfect introduction to SMT! It's more lighthearted than mainline games because you're almost always accompanied by friends. Your decisions matter A LOT and it's amazing how much depth it offers in terms of story and team creation. Great replayability, also because of multiple endings and an extra day compared to the DS version. It feels lively because the characters are voiced and veryA perfect introduction to SMT!     Engaging story, well-written characters, addictive gameplay, the only bad thing I can say about this game is the soundtrack. Wish there were more songs with more variety.

    The story is pretty good, but it's very hard to get when grinding is mandatory if you want to beat the game. The actual gameplay is hit or miss, it really depends on the stage and the objectives, Some levels are a blast, others are complete RNGfests where it feels impossible to win without a lucky streak. If you want to experience it, at least play the easier mode so you don't have to grind as much, but there are much better SMT games and much better SRPGs out there. I'd pass on this game.… Expand

And thanks to this realism and the extreme situation that occurs in the story, it has a very dark and heavy atmosphere, but even so, this tone never gets past the point, because there are some light and funny moments (which are very welcome). The 'biblical' elements of the story really pleased me. The characters have a lot of focus on the story, and some have very complex development arcs within it, there are 2 arcs of two very good specific characters, from Keisuke and Midori, there is some really cool development to change your thoughts, and by the way this change it is very difficult (as it should be). In addition to the mysterious and intriguing plot, the feeling of tension in this game is very great and very good, there is always some urgency or some danger and there is always something that will happen in a few days or a few hours, leaving the player very curious and anxious. Often, the real danger of the characters' death (they can die and affect the story) is something that also ties you to the game. The atmosphere is very immersible, the title survivor lives up to the game. This theme of survival has a lot of focus in the first 5 days, in addition to being very realistic the script makes it work in a smart way. The game has a message system, that at the beginning of the day it counts some events that will occur during it (but it is vague). And the script being very smart takes advantage of that and creates a great rhythm and even 'telling' what will happen he manages to remain unpredictable enough. The dialogues at night are a moment of interaction between the characters and a moment of summary of what happened on the day, I found something very good, because the story is long and you may end up forgetting 'less important' things (it is worth mentioning that this summary is optional). The Naoya route is very good, but the end of the original game is very open (it's good, more is very open), in the Overclocked version they gave a much more decent direction and closure, I really liked the outcome of the post game technically still having ended up open (and this is VERY rare for me). The only defect of this route is that Keisuke, Haru and Gin didn't even appear on the 7th and 8th of the Naoya route (not even at the end of the game!). The story revolves around the characters a lot and if it weren't for them the story wouldn't be so good.

    The characters are very deep, have backgrounds, add the narrative, some are developed in the middle of it and everyone has their own beliefs and point of view (as I said this game generates many different reflections and points of view are important for this). The disagreements of thoughts within the party are quite interesting. Confinement affects a lot and everyone in it, everyone deals with it in a very different way (and these ways are very realistic), some are selfish and want to use demons as slaves to do their job instead of them, some want to use demons to stay strong and oppress the weak, some just cling to life, a few want to help others and so on. Another very interesting thing is that depending on the route you choose, some characters can enter, continue or leave your party and the determinant of this is whether what you chose coincides with what each character believes. But there was a lack of a better introduction of each character, it should have given more focus to the before and after confinement, showing the direct consequences on the personalities of each character, and this did not happen because the story wanted to mesh too quickly (barely enough time to introduce the 3 main characters). And in my opinion I thought that the game has few dialogues in general and I missed the more mundane and everyday dialogues of the characters (the dialogues needed to be more frequent). I wanted to know more about them and the party's relationships with each other, for example: the friendship relationship between Yuzu and Midori and etc. (some characters have it but most don't). Another bad thing is that half of them are very generic, but as there is the other half and even the clichés have their unique points to reveal.

    The gameplay of this game is divided into 2 parts, combat and 'survival'. The survival system is how history occurs. The game has a system of days and one of hours. You have a number of specific character events that you choose which to do and in what order to do (aside from some events that are mandatory for the story's progress), something worth noting is that the order in which you see the events of the characters can change some future events.    … Expand

    I'm going to preface this game may not be for everyone. It will take some time to get used to because of the unique mechanics of the game.     Pros: - Great, interesting story. This is especially true of the scenario, which really shines and draws you in. There is even meaningful character development for several members of the cast. Overall, the plot and world building is fantastic and serves as one of the most attractive pieces of this title.
    - As with other SMT games, the combat/fusion loop is insanely fun. The grid-based TRPG-style is also a first for the series and they manage to pull it off very well. Can't emphasize enough how much fun I had with this battle system and it was definitely the highlight of the game for me.
    - Mission variety is decent - although a few of them, most notably the escort mission, can definitely be annoying.
    - Voice acting and 8th day content represents a significant increase from the original. The VA is slightly below average, but still better than nothing and even quite impressive since just about everything is voiced. Furthermore, the 8th day content helps to flesh out stories and even offers alternate endings from what was seen in the original game.

    Cons:
    - Soundtrack is too limited. I would only consider a few of the tracks "good" and even then they repeat countless times.
    - All your characters feel far too similar due to them having the exact same skills (for the most part). I would've really enjoyed if you could differentiate your party members more.
    - Feature-barren. No 3D and (nearly) no touch controls makes this release feel lazy.
    - 7th day content are often are a bit too similar, especially when it comes to the bosses.
    - Limited visual elements. Too few maps and a rather small number of character portraits. While there are a significant number of sprites, you rarely get to see them and I wish that they could have utilized them a little better somehow.

    - This is a great example of a game that TRULY does not respect your time. The meat of the game's big reveals are, from what I understand, spread throughout the 6 main routes. Now, there's nothing wrong with a system like this. 6 significantly different routes would usually be something to praise and in a general sense, I am appreciative of the breadth of content. However, playing through the entire game every time to get the other routes is NOT FUN.

    You only get to keep certain pieces of your progress (demons, money, etc.) to NG+ and while it can be enjoyable to go through the game once again being incredibly overpowered (which you undoubtedly will be), it is definitely not fun to have to go through the whole game 4 times with more or less nothing changing until you get to the 7th day (which can take anywhere from 3-6 hours per repeated playthrough). I know many people enjoy replays, but having to play the same ~5 hours of a game 4 times just to experience ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL parts of the story is simply bad game design.

    This is exacerbated even further by the Atsuro, Yuzu, and Gin Routes, which are relative disappointments compared to the Law/Chaos paths. Atsuro and Gin don't have 8th days (and are a bit too similar to each other) and Yuzu's story is for all intents and purposes a bad end. Furthermore, the Yuzu and Atsuro routes are the two that someone would probably pick since those characters are the two core party members that stay with you throughout the entirety of the game.

    One could make the argument that you could just make a save file before the routes split so that you can just reload the file after you finish a route. However, this is clearly not the way that Atlus meant for this game to be played - as you are rewarded immensely for continuing a save file after you finish a route instead of reloading an old save. Even if you do reload, you have to at minimum replay the game once in order to get rid of the XP cap present in your first playthrough

    Final Word:
    Incredible game with a great story that is marred by how little Devil Survivor Overclocked respects your time. Still, I highly recommend this game and my first play through was undoubtedly some of the most fun I've had with a JRPG in years.

And you have Devil Survivor. It's an SRPG that takes away from what SMT is all about, by not only removing core gameplay mechanics, but also making grinding much, much more easy. It's an SRPG that takes away from what SMT is all about, by not only removing core gameplay mechanics, but also making grinding much, much more easy. This game also has extremely broken skills, as you can beat the hell out of nearly everything by using the Kishin and Vile demons as companions. Although if I take my mind off of the SMT series, and think of this as a stand alone game, it's a decent play. It can be quite difficult if you are not paying attention to your skills and are not exploiting enemy weaknesses. The game concentrates on character development and does a good job at evoking emotions to certain characters (The game successfully made me want to strangle Midori). The game has multiple ends which pertain to the three main alignments (Chaotic, Neutral and Lawful). And the plot does a great job of keeping you entertained.… Expand

One of the main aspects motivating me to get past some unfair boss fights.

You will have a blast playing through it and considering what is really the best choice for yourself, and/or the other people, angels, and/or demons.     What makes this game so great is the depth of customization & character creation. Later in the game, how each skill & class ability of the different monsters interact, along with the strategy of your group really becomes interesting showcasing how cool & different this game really is from all other strategy RPGs.

    The design flaw that drops the score a little is in this game you have to endure lots of boring moments, lots of dull looking creatable party monsters & semi challenging game play, in order to get to the cool stuff.

    Games like this show their depth later so in the beginning they seem simplistic. It's late game that you'll see enemies that reflect & thus are immune to physical attacks completely. Groups that petrify your leader and break him for an instant death to your party.

    It's at that point the monster you so carefully created with skills that create combos for physical attacks becomes useless & you need to start developing new designs.

    The game is like an encyclopedia of monsters. It will literally take you an entire notepad full of notes just to build the ultimate monster creation if you're into this.

    You level up 2 different monsters & fuse them to make a new type. Leveling up both monsters is important because you want your new creation to get stat bonuses which you can use for your strategy. For example maybe you want a really AGILE spell caster so they go first during the fight so they paralyze the enemy with electric magic thus preventing the enemies groups from ever attacking.

    Hint: how many points you can transfer onto your new creation is a set amount so don't spend forever leveling up the ones you intend to fuse together just enough to give your final creation the max amount of points bonus it can get (which you will be able to check)

    The game plays on a grid and moves at a fast pace which is very modern. You can close your 3DS anytime and it'll pause the game which makes this a very streamlined modern game much like console DISGAEA. It doesn't feel at all like the slower FINAL FANTASY TACTICS.

    You control your human story characters who are always the leader of each group & they can bring with them 2 of your creatable monsters to form a party.

    When you move around on the map you only see the human story characters but when you enter a battle you will control all three against 3 enemy demons.

    At this point there's a ton of possibilities but it's mostly in how you designed your monsters. Each fight has a possible 2 rounds. The AGI stat of each monster will determine the order of action along with knowing which types of attacks have priority. FE status effect spells like muting or petrification have top priority so it the enemy uses those you will have to be able to endure those first in order to attack.

    Each monster has it's own class ability. Some for example allow you to attack an enemy from a distance and unless the enemy has a shooter too in their group, they won't be able to defend.

    Lots of skills in the game combine with other ones to create powerful effects. You can use a physical attack skill which makes you hit 2-5 times in combination with a critical hit bonus so that you have the chance of landing multiple critical hits. You could breed your monster to also have the skill that adds petrification to their physical attacks so then you get multiple chances of petrifying the enemy!

    For the story I found it very interesting. It's got a lot of characters that move it along each with different plots that offer something for everybody. At the core the story is a pretty serious game about angels VS demons & God VS the devil. It's presented by a small group of teenagers stuck inside a disaster scenario which is fine.

    You got a lot of choices and answers to make that change things.

    This is a game you can rush through or if you like these kinda of games & enjoy playing them could take you over a few hundred hours.

    Where games like this lose a point for me is when you compare them to something like ETRIAN ODYSSEY 4 or UNTOLD. Or heck even something like IKARUGA or STREET FIGHTER. Some games right from the beginning you're playing your favorite character, enjoying their abilities & the challenge is in the playing. FIRE EMBLEM AWAKENING is more like this & that game is much harder & right from the beginning you're experiencing what the game has to offer    … Expand

    I have only witnessed only one ending to this tensei so far, but I definitely would recommend it to hardcore RPG and strategy fans alike. I can't say much as to it's quality compared to the source material as I have only played this version, but if you haven't played the original it's story is really original and memorable.     It's cool game, like SMT games usually are, however title itself isn't in 3D and content added to original version isn't apparently that useful, which takes my grade down as release is kinda disappointing, game content is gr8 tho.

The battle graphics aren't too bad, though the demons make a bit of animation. The game is about buying, battling, and fusing demons, and not to mention surviving. The game is SUPER tricky. There are "8 Days" in the game. You can either, if there is no required time event, speed up time by 30 minutes at a time. Your COMP will send you emails about the news and what will happened. Ex: Like "jimmy will get hit by a baseball bat and die". It's pretty creepy sometimes, but if you're fine with it, cool. The ending, and the character's lives, almost everything, depend on your decisions. So good luck!… Expand

    Truly the definitive version of the game. A number of enhancements make this version the best way to experience Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor. However, people who have played the original do not need to get this version.

    Devil Survivor is a fantastic RPG that I would recommend to any RPG fan. Devil Survivor:Overclocked is the exact same game with little new content. The voice acting is acceptable, although not as good as other games in the SMT series, the inclusion of an eighth day is nice although unneeded, none of the new demons do anything noteworthy, and the game's new easy mode will is nice, as itDevil Survivor is a fantastic RPG that I would recommend to any RPG fan. Devil Survivor:Overclocked is the exact same game with little new content. The voice acting is acceptable, although not as good as other games in the SMT series, the inclusion of an eighth day is nice although unneeded, none of the new demons do anything noteworthy, and the game's new easy mode will is nice, as it allows people to play through the game with ease rather than spending countless hours grinding against the same foes like in the original Devil Survior. I'd like to talk about other new features included in the game, although there really isn't much else included in this game that wasn't in the original game! I'm especially disappointed by this remake because of how well Atlus has been able to handle remakes and ports like the entire Persona series on the PSP.

    Turn base Anime Drama I love it is like Pokemon and Fire Emblem had a demon baby. this a must own for the 3DS. I love the choices it really gets you into the story. The characters are unique and for once a story makes a solid RPG.

    Great story, superb music and good sprites and good voice acting, what else can you ask for? Well there is a little thing, it doesn't use the 3D effect, it can be bad for some people, but for myself, I play in 2D mode in my 3ds 90% of the time anyway....

    This is THE best game I have ever played. The story was phenomenal, the characters were entertaining, and the music was fantastic. Compared to the previous game, the voice acting added A LOT of emotion to it, and really made me continue to play rather than get bored and lose motivation to read long walls of text. I didn't play the original version, so I decided to pick this one up instead when I saw it on sale.     I might be a little bias on this game since the voice actress for Yuzu is the same as Rika from Digimon Tamers but considering the game's storyline, I found that to be a good decision on Atlus's part. Gameplay wise I took me while to understand the mechanics but once I did, it was easy to exploit all of its aspects to my advantage.     This game is not in 3D. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, this is also one of the best games on the system, even though it is a remake. You take the original game, which was great by itself, add in various prologues for whatever ending you achieved in the game, add in some hit or miss voice acting with some recognizable anime people, and you've got a good remake of a great game. So after watching the same cinema 7 times I decided to send it back to gamefly atlas games never do it for normal humans any way. I never played the first oneon DS but 3ds fare is kinda lean.     FINALLY! a 3D game that is not in 3D. Seriously, why charge 39.99 for a 3DS game when only the opening and the demon fusing segments are in 3D?? Save your money and keep the DS version from a couple years ago.

    Same great game from 09. Now with fully voiced, added easy mode, and little tweaks here and there. I hate to see people giving this game bad scores for the lack of 3d. I see this game as a love letter from Atlus to all the Shim Megami Tensei fans out there. I for one welcome this game into my SMT collection with open arms.

    First off, this is an amazing game, regardless of the fact that it doesn't have any 3D save for the opening sequence and demon fusing. If you're a fan of tactical RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem, I highly recommend it. The game lasts several hours, it took me well over 60 on my first playthrough on the DS version. There are many positives that come with this game, even ifFirst off, this is an amazing game, regardless of the fact that it doesn't have any 3D save for the opening sequence and demon fusing. The game itself is on par with the other SMT games, and more animated than Strange Journey, so if 3D is no big deal and you just need a good jrpg, you will be very happy with this title.
    The biggest disappointment is that this is a remake of a game that just came out a couple years ago, on a new system that is selling itself on new technology (3D), and wasn't remade to take advantage of that technology. Ghost Recon did an amazing job of taking the standard SRPG grid and turning it into 3D eye candy and that was a launch game! This game was delayed a few months after the original release date, so I was at least expecting something similar. This is the most disappointed I've been with Atlus ever.    … Expand
