*Uneven minigame selection. Whether this is a fault is debatable, but I would've preferred 10 minigames from each game. I was excited to play some of my favourite Mario Party 8 minigames, only to find that only 3 minigames from that game are included.

It may seem like I'm being overly negative, but I want to clarify that I had fun with this game. I just think it has little replay value and didn't use the great potential it had (why was this released on 3DS and not on Switch?).

What should have been an easy game to make great was instead crap.
I'm going to take you through a story like this:
*Imagine seeing this game, thinking it will be the perfect Mario Party game, with 100 of your favorite minigames, 10 of your favorite boards (why didn't Nintendo think of that), 20 of your favorite characters, a nice online mode and it's available on the Switch. So you go

*You see that it's on the 3DS. Well that doesn't hurt the game really. So you still find it to be fun.
*But then you see that some crappy minigames return. Nintendo should have let the people vote on 10 minigames from each Mario Party game from 1-10. Instead some crappy minigames are still in it. And it's not 10 from each game. But it's still a mostly fun time.
*Then you realize that none of the handheld minigames return. That sucks, but you still find this game fine.
*However, you realize that there are only 8 characters. It's very underwhelming but you think, well it's not for 10 players at once, this can still be good.
*But the worst happens: you find a board that isn't interesting at all. You think, it's just 1 board, probably for new players, let's see the others. But you realize that's the only board. You think, it can still be a decent time. So you play it and eventually get bored.
*You check out the other modes, but they aren't that fun. So you go online.
*No one wants to play this underwhelming online mode on the 3DS though. So you put this game away, thinking that it isn't that bad but isn't that great.
*You play the other Mario Party games, and forget about this one. Eventually you find it one day, and play it, then remembering how bad it was. So you get rid of it.

Mario Party: The Top 100 is an underwhelming result of a hyped up game. 1/10, I'm going back to play the other games.

I had A LOT of fun with this game. I almost 100%ed it on the first day I got it! Good games. But no Good boards. Seriously, there is only one multiplayer board. So is this game purposely for single player? Also, no online mode? No Donkey Kong? This should've been $30. No offense Nintendo.
Anyway, I wish that the next Mario Party game has Paper Mario and have one minigame with WarioWare microgames. Those microgames are awesome.

But in the end, I will say that my nostalgia won with this game and I'm rightfully giving it the eight out of ten. Time to dive into this party and see what it's got;

I'm going to start with the pros first and the biggest one is just the concept. One hundred mini-games from the past home console installments is already one of the best ideas you could do with a franchise this big. As a person who has played Mario Party since the very beginning, I've lived to see the release of every installment in the franchise and while I still play Mario Parties 1-8 on a regular basis, seeing all my favorite mini-games return was the biggest nostalgic kick I've felt in a long time and I loved every moment of it. Mario Party's Face Lift, Mario Party 3's Bounce 'n' Trounce, ESPECIALLY Mario Party 2's Bowser's Big Blast, seeing all my favorite N64 and GCN games return was amazing. And what amazes me more is that of all the 100 mini-games, I didn't dislike a single one. Granted that may be because I never disliked any mini-games to begin with, but there were none that I originally felt to be long and somewhat boring to constantly play. If I wanted to throw any slight complaint, it would be the lack of mini-games from Mario Party 8, which only had 3 in the game. The game modes were pretty good too, with some being callbacks to modes from previous games. The Mini-Game Island mode is the game's main single player campaign, which is a callback to Mario Party 1's Mini-Game Island and, to an extent, Mario Party 2's Mini-Game Coaster. And playing through all 100 mini-games was a blast, I enjoyed it all. Decathalon I believe originated from Mario Party 5, which also returns in this game, where you score based on how well you did in score based mini-games. The Balloon Bash mode returns from Star Rush and again tries to be the replacement for the original gameplay. While it does take the concept one small step further to the original gameplay, it's still flawed in some ways and still a few steps short of achieving it. I don't mind it though, it's still better than 9, 10 and Island Tour's gameplay.

Now here comes my personal painful part; listing the problems I had with this great idea. To get the obvious point out, I still HEAVILY prefer the original gameplay seen in Mario Parties 1-8 and DS. Trying to use the Balloon Bash as a replacement does no justice. And with Balloon Bash only having 1 board and limits the mini-games that can appear, it's not going to hold attention for very long. I've seen many people who are in the same boat; wishing Nintendo would stop messing around with gimmicks and just return to the original gameplay. So much like the Paper Mario series, I see this as Nintendo flat out ignoring any and all feedback to yet another game series and continuing on a self made path that they refuse to steer away from. Then there's the elephant in the room; the system. While I love the 3DS and I'm more than capable of playing just about any game on my own with no problems, this is a game I WISH I could play with friends more than I could play alone. Mario Party has always been a franchise that prides itself on multiplayer competition and home consoles satisfy multiplayer better than handhelds. Since the first handheld, they have always been geared towards single player action. Link Cables and Wireless Communication won't change that handhelds are not designed to be multiplayer heavy. For once, I agree with those who said this should've been on the Switch. I won't complain too much that it's on the 3DS, but for a game that compiles 100 mini-games from the past, something my brother, some of my friends and I are familiar with, playing it as a group on the big TV would've been WAY better than a handheld.

In the end, Mario Party: The Top 100 is one of the best ideas for the series, but the choices Nintendo made with it unfortunately caused it to become another one of Mario's biggest missed opportunities in recent times, following the wasted potential of Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. One hundred mini-games from the past is an amazing idea that was used as an attempt to keep the 3DS alive in the face of the Switch. Nintendo,I'd buy this game again, but all you gotta do is port this game to the Switch and add in the classic gameplay. I'm pretty sure that's how most your fans would rather be partying with the former plumber.

We're talking about the "Mario Party" game that has the top 100 fan favorite minigames in the series! It's absolutely amazing!

The first mode in the game is Minigame Island, which is basically an adventure mode with minigames as the levels. Because there really isn't any bad minigames whatsoever, all the levels feel fun to play.

Minigame Match is the second game. If you've played "Mario Party: Star Rush", this mode might feel a bit familiar. 4 players are moving around 1 (not-so big) board simultaneously, and playing minigames to collect coins to pay off for Stars. It's very basic, and because their only 8 characters to play as and 1 tiny board, there's not gonna be much variety going around.

Championship Battles is a tournament-based mode where you challenge your friends and rivals to a series of minigames to see who will be crowned winner. It's fine if you don't want to get into anything big in the game.

Decathlon is the fourth and final mode of the game, which is where you compete against your friends/rivals to series of minigames, but winning isn't everything in this mode. Instead, you're all trying to go for a new high score. Again, nothing all too big.

Overall, "Mario Party: The Top 100" feels like a huge celebration of "Mario Party"'s success of making fantastic minigames to put a smile on anybody's face. Although, the only real problem is the lack of characters, having the fewest amount of them since "Mario Party 5". But, if you can look past that, you'll have blast blasting away your opponents with cannonballs or eating a gigantic pizza with your friend! I totally recommend it!

I really like the minigames here. there fun and enjoyable. there are great ones like booksquirm and hexagon heat. my only problem here is the luck minigames. there are a lot of them and most of them aren't fun luck minigames. yeah I know every Mario party game has luck minigames but not as many as the top 100. nexts lets talk about the roster. Its bad. they removed toad and dk for rosalina. dk and toad just get shoved into mini game island. they should of been at least 10 characters on the roster. now let talk about boards. there is only one at it is practically a star rush board. I couldn't even play the board once because it was so bad.

but luckily there is extra single player content. meet mini game island. a fun 2 hour side game where you play a bunch of minigames. pretty simple. there are also 2 modes to play but there not worth much. finally there is local play. now luckily this game can have 4 people play on one game card. which I'm very happy about. but sadly there is nothing to do in multiplayer. it gets boring after 10 min.

overall Mario party the top 100 is kinda bad. its dull and boring. and it just makes me want to play a better game. I wouldn't buy it. If you want a Mario party exorenice on the 3ds then I would recommend star rush or island tour. Just not this one.

Ok so...should I even call this a Mario Party game? First of all, the lack of game boards and focusing too much on the minigames don’t really mix together. Another thing is that the 3DS was already at the end of its cycle by the time that it came out. There was too much focus on the minigames and some of them weren’t even that fun. And the lack of the minigames from the handheld Mario Party installments (Advance, DS, Island Tour, Star Rush,) were not even included. There should have been ten of each as well as a missed opportunity to have some form of a poll letting us know what minigames we would’ve like to see in the Mario Party hence "the TOP 100" part of the name. I really love this game, the music is great. The minigames are awesome and they definitely did a good job when making them 3d. Also the stylus and microphone were utilized very well in my opinion.

This game is wrong. If you want to play MP with a friend, it will certainly be funnier playing in a board. Playing only minigames is interesting just for 20 minutes at least. The board of this game is enjoyable only on the first game. The roster is very lacking: only 8 characters. Plus, was it so important not including "spin off" minigames? (Mario Party DS, for example). All that the game offers its fun, but there is a lack of content. Its very bare bones and even if the game is good its way too small of a game to recommend it to everyone. If you like Mario Party, you may have fun, I indeed did, i actually liked this game. But, uhhh, its kind of an incomplete experience

The Minigames are ok, I guess. It was nice to see classics like Shy Guy Says, Bumper Balls, Hexagon Heat, Booksquirm, and many others. However, this is not a Mario Party game. It’s just a minigame compilation. There’s only one board, and it’s basically the same as the cars. Everyone moves at the same time and you randomly play Minigames. It’s so disappointing how Nintendo, one, didn’t include good boards to go along with good Minigames to make for a good game, and two, didn’t have the community vote on what Minigames we wanted to see. Like, why is Tug O War, the worst minigame, in this game? Thank God we have Mario Party Superstars Expand

Nd Cube destroyed what would be the best game in the franchise. The minigames have really good ones, but after some time the bad ones come. Why include Mecha Marathon?

With a grand total of one board, yes, ONE, instead of bringing classic boards like Superstars did, they just made a generic board. The board is what puts the minigames together. It should have more than what it has. Why

Why releasing this on the 3DS in 2017? The Switch had already been released! For some reason, Nintendo really wanted to extend the 3DS life. The only reason I see is to make the handhelds' minigames a better experience. But where are they? They aren't in the game. Neither in Superstars, but this is for another review. And in 2022, people still ask for Camera Shy to return.

Mario Party: The Top 100 could have been awesome, but it feels more like an incomplete project. And in 2021, Mario Party Superstars came to dig this one into the grave. Probably the most disappointing game from the franchise. And I don't think anyone is going to revisit it. (46/100)

Just play any other Mario Party game and you'll have more enjoyment of this piece of garbage. It's so bad that it doesn't even have a reason to exist anymore when Superstars is on the Switch.

Although the minigames are nice, there's nothing else to do. Just play all of a good Mario Party's minigames one-by-one, then go to play one of Star Rush's boards, then that's really Mario Party: The Top 100

A lot of included mini-games are genuinely fun, but those based on blind luck are completely useless. [03/2018, p.73]

A game that could have been lots of things. It could have been a tribute to a great franchise that is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary. It could have been a place of reference for active multiplayer gaming that offers pure fun. Instead, it is a collection of mini-games that can be compared to a trip down the memory lane – an opportunity to relive good gaming moments, which is marked by lack of elements that can give this title its proper place into the Mario Party fandom.
