This was the corporation at its absorbing best, with an opener featuring eagles, geese, puffins, ancient oaks, sleepy seals, patrolling orca, whizzing kingfishers and the odd environmental musing.

It is a stunning portrait of breeding orcas, golden eagles, foxes and dormice; woodlands, meadows and rivers. Just beautiful. ... From its majestic score to its pioneering cinematography and its clever narratives, this is education by way of awe.

Spectacular, even if the wonders were more familiar and owls and dormice will never quite be as sexy as iguanas versus racer snakes.

Wild Isles is, in totality, beautiful and charming.

There is an occasional sense in this series that the producers are trying to heighten the drama, fearful that the lack of big cats or tropical rainforests will have us switching off. ... This isn’t needed, because the combination of beautiful photography and Attenborough’s passion for nature are sufficient.

I am always a fan of the BBC natural history docs but I did feel on occasion that there was so much of a focus on the novel and interesting in far-flung countries that Britain felt neglected. As a British ecologist I love the nature in our land and I'm so happy that there is a big, mainstream series that has highlighted it. Outside of this personal connection, it still has everything else you'd expect from a David Attenborough documentary but that definitely lives up the adage of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. Instant classic in my eyes. Full Review »
