I've been a Tim Burton fan for years. The man has brought us some amazing stuff. This isn't one of them. This is a teen drama masquerading as an Addams Family tale. It feels like it was made by people who've never seen anything Addams. They've only ever heard it described, poorly. It's like they completely misunderstood the Addams Family and their characters.

All the characters feel off. It's like they tried so hard to do something different that they took it too far and in the wrong direction. They've turned Pugsley into a snivelling wimp. Morticia and Gomez lack everything that has always made them the perfect blend of charming and twisted. There's no chemistry between them and you feel none of the trademark Addams Family love.
And then there's Wednesday. Sure, she's always been a bit of a morbid sociopath, but it's always been in a fun, charming way. And there was always a hint that there was still something else underneath it all. That deep down, she still loved her family. But there's none of that here. They removed everything and just left the dark part without any of the charm. And that alone might be tolerable. Except that also made her just another angsty teenager who hates her mom.

Being a lifelong Addams Family fan. The premise of seeing a high school aged Wednesday trying to acclimate socially with teenagers like her struck me as odd. Once I got my head around the fact this wasn’t an Addams Family based show I was much more open to the idea. Start with Jenny Ortega. She absolutely nails the dark wit and murderous/psychotic and anti-social tropes I’d expect from all iterations of her character in the past.
She swiftly executes all traits convincingly and with ease. Staying true to character but adding a touch of her own personality.

The support characters. Her Roomie, love interests. Teachers. Headmistress. Are all very solid and interesting characters who add enough dynamism and different personalities to keep the show interesting.

The positives I took out of this first season:

How accurately portrayed the titular character is.
The tone of the show kept very true to the original content.
The humanising of Wednesday characters as she learns how to be more social and like a regular teen.

The negatives I take from this though are a few but not dealbreakers:

Poor CGI for the big bad reveal and final episode fight.
The final episode of the season become a bit too campy and sort of ruined the continuity.

I found myself comparing certain story arcs and storytelling. To direct comparisons to the likes of Riverdale. Veronica Mars, Strenger Thing and other popular teen soaps/dramas. This removed a fraction of enjoyment of it for me.

Overall though the show was immensely enjoyable with A grade acting and storytelling across the entire season. I’m very excited for a potential second season and hope that Netflix announces a renewal because this guy is very approving of this direction for Wednesdays character

The truth is that it is advertised as his show because he is the producer with the most famous name.

I can't deny that the series will be successful. Audience reactions on social media have been positive, but it just goes to show that cyclically most people like to see something recycled, just with a new facade.

I won't say it's a poor show, because there is care in its making, but there is absolutely nothing special about it.

Good for a look at a few babes in black, but that and a couple cameos can’t save this from its poor writing, predictable nature, and weird casting. Went in willing to put aside my preconceptions, but it’s definitely not worthy of the high praise some bestow upon it.

Solid cast, especially Ortega, with the sad exception of Armisen, who is pretty terrible but thankfully brief. What the recent (ish) Sabrina could have been if it didn't take itself far too seriously.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Jenna Ortega has proven to be one of the best acting stars of her age, delivering a charismatic and finely detailed, yet deadpan performance as Wednesday Addams. It's a certainty that she was born to play this role.

Even though the movie is centred on Wednesday Addams, she has a bunch of interesting supporting characters. From the brilliant acting of Gwendoline Christine as Principal Larissa, to that of Catherine Zeta Jones as Morticia Addams, to the nuanced hand acting from Victor Dorobantu as The Thing, and finally the well juxtaposed Character of Enid played by Emma Myers. The other cast members I don't mention wouldn't be because of a lack in their performance, but to make this review concise.

Netflix struck gold with this and I hope there isn't a dip in quality if further seasons are made.

I like this. At the same time, I haven't paid attention to the marketing of this Series. In fact, I would have never even known that it existed if it wasn't for some controversy over the casting for this series that popped up on social sites.

From what I have watched from my youth of the Addams family, this series does not represent that, this is a series that plunges a bit forward in time and focuses on Wednesday.
This series is something new, and enjoyable that I wouldn't have expected I might be interested in.

Understand before I rate this I looked at some bad reviews to taper my rating. if you knew nothing about the Addams Family, and you like darker teen dramas with a somewhat generic plot that at times keeps you invested, then you'll enjoy this for sure. Understand this I DO NOT like Films or series like Twilight or CW drama shows, but this is something different.
What if you were to combine the generic plot of a Scooby doo show with the Addams Family, and make the focus on Wednesday and her friends, solving a mystery...Well to me that is a great show.
Just a warning *This show is sometimes cringe and predictable, but it uses that to its advantage.

    Let me rate this:
Story & Plot - 8/10 (Scooby Doo, Where are you?)
Characters - 9/10 (I didn't expect to care about almost every single character, well acted)
Music - 8/10 (Add more powerful or alternatively different music for scenes, I felt some repetitiveness)
Visuals and CGI - 8/10 (Tolerable, good use of practical effects)

Overall 8/10, this is great series which I hope gets a Season 2, all they have to do is tighten up the writing, add a little bit more budget to some of the scenes, including music, make sure to stick to the characters personalities, WHATEVER YOU DO, do not soften up Wednesdays' personality to the point where she cares about everything (I understand character development but that is not the way it should be), and finally touch up the CGI and make sure to keep the creepiness and mystery in this series.
It's Addams Family against the world or in this case Wednesday.

So I recommend this, never expected a Live Action adaption based on the Addams Family to work this well, I was engaged pretty much the whole way through. So for those that like mystery, some drama, a bit of action-adventure, and in my opinion good cinematography then watch this, but don't expect explosions every 5 secs, sometimes stories don't need intense action, it just needs you to think mostly.
