It's a rare treat to stumble across a little-known but captivating shows like “We Are Lady Parts,” There are enough laughs to carry the show alone, but it has so much more going for it. Loved all the characters, from strong willed front women Siara to Amina, puke-prone guitarist with stageIt's a rare treat to stumble across a little-known but captivating shows like “We Are Lady Parts,” There are enough laughs to carry the show alone, but it has so much more going for it. Loved all the characters, from strong willed front women Siara to Amina, puke-prone guitarist with stage fright. All the characters are Muslim, which might explain the critical embrace WALP gets on Metacritic vs the the more finicky user reviews(some folks just won't evolve) The show is sharp, humane and ambitious, far far more so than most comedies I have watched over the last few years. Rather than lean on the stereotypes that society has thrust upon Muslim women, WALP gives us rich portraits of the five members with a full arc and lots of cultural depth. Delightful story - very funny, pretty dark actually (“No One’s Gonna Honor Kill My Sister But Me” is an excellent song”), and lovely performances all around. Hope it gets picked up for season 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of the personalities and situations are fairly similar, standard ones you might see in most sitcoms. The general arc and ending aren't really going to take anyone by surprise.
But there are two things that elevate this and turn it from a sweet, easygoing, gently funny sitcom into something really worth watching. Firstly be focusing on a group of characters you don't usually see on TV (and especially in easygoing sitcoms) the whole thing feels a lot newer and more fresh. And secondly their songs are an absolute hoot. At one point they do a song called "voldemort under my headscarf", which would get the series 7/10 on its own.… Expand
