One of the best shows I’ve e seen in years. It is superbly written, has great performances, and its layered examination of the history of racism and white supremacy in this country is very timely.

Watchmen was already political you absolute numbskulls. It was a product of its time, and so is this show. I will say there's one thing the show did that neither the graphic novel of film did for me: it actually got me emotional (mostly thanks to the track "Lincoln Tunnel" by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross).

I'm now 7 episodes into the season.

The show has improved a lot from my original review. It's still nowhere near the quality of Alan Moore's work, but it is reasonably fun television compared to what else is out there. The elements that were added to or borrowed from the original work are the weakest parts of the show still. But the story isn't bad on its own. I'm genuinely interested to see where it is going and unlike with Lindelof's previous work I don't think he will totally screw his audience this time. He didn't totally screw this one up. I'd still like to see an authentic Watchmen port that does true justice to the original, but that just isn't going to happen because it isn't accessible to mainstream audiences. The Watchmen motion comic was the best I think we're going to get. As far as tv goes, this is still not really truly the Watchmen but it's a passable alternative.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show is no more political than the original graphic novel. As I read the negative reviews for this show, it becomes apparent that either the trolls didn't read the original, or they were too stupid to understand the political subtext. The show is faithful to the mood and plot of the original novel. If you are a true fan, you will probably love seeing what became of the watchmen universe twenty years after the events of the original. The acting is superb, and all of the characters are there in some way. The political points aren't one sided, but the show does deal with white supremacists, as did the graphic novel. And, anyone who thinks a woman shouldn't be able to kick ass needs to challenge Rhonda Rousey to a fight. Expand

For the comic book ''purists'', it was blasphemy. To the racists who were offended, it was an insult.
I hate to generalize but when you upset two of today's most toxic groups, that believe they know something you don't, then you will certainly have my attention.

Lindelof's approach is not canon and it's fine. Watchmen's current and official sequel in the comic books ends on Wednesday with the release of Doomsday Clock #12 where the long-awaited confrontation between Dr. Manhattan and Superman will finally occur.

But personally I think it was a great show. He took the world from the comic book and gave it a different voice.
He built an interesting mystery around certain characters from the original story and rooted it in fairly relevant themes that as it showed from its first episode and until its last, encompass decades of hatred that are still alive today.

Until now it's believed that it will only be a stand-alone season and if so I'm okay with it.
I'm open to a second one, but I think the story that was told was enough. And believe me that I enjoyed it week by week since it started.

My only but and that's why I didn't give it 10 is that despite the good handling of plot, Lindelof made a mistake in order to make his romantic story work and that is that he weakened Dr. Manhattan. A lot.

I understand it's his vision, but you're telling me that Ozymandias being the smartest person in the world didn't manage to capture that omnipotent being but a flock of racists did? C'mon.

Nonetheless it was a great show. If you haven't watch it, start now.

But if that's a reason to give it a 0, I'm surprised those people had all together enough brains to apreciate Alan Moore's original work in the first place. And so what if it also sends a message that's anti-racism? If that's a bad thing these days, then the semi-apocalyptic world portrayed in the series is much closer then we might realize. That being said, I think the show is great. I can go into detail why, but that has been covered by other reviewers. Just wanted to come out here to give it a 10/10 to show my support in reaction to these prejudiced wannabe-fanboys. Expand

HBO does it again - they are pushing the envelope like they did with West World. Just the decisions they made for the story, the ideas, the ridiculousness, the genre defying plot lines. And I do appreciate them bringing the racial Tensions to the forefront. I mean, this is something that - like it or not - we as citizens of the United States are struggling with. I mean you can tell from the comments, a lot of people want a show that doesn't challenge them. This is a challenging show but can be especially challenging for conservatives and those that have trouble sympathizing with the plight African Americans. However, that adide, it's just a fantastic and original story. There's absolutely no way this is a 0 or like 5. This show is a 9 minimum. But because of all the haters on this site based solely on the politics (reality!) of the history and conflicts in the show, I need to give this an absolute 10. This is engaging sci-fi with an intense black female lead. It's not heavy handed at all, they just had one major scene regarding the historical massacre of a black community in Tulsa. That doesn't make this show a 0. It's not sjw it's not any of that crap. It's just a phenomenonal show! Expand

I'm going to do a spoiler free review, and as such, it's going to be very short and general.

Somewhere in there, there's possibly a good story. But that's not earning anyone any points here when they had such a legendary story to springboard off of. Instead, it's absolutely polluted with the writer's inability to resist submerging the entire show in his extremist ideology. The writing suffers for it, the plot suffers for it, and the characters, more than anything else, suffer for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't listen to people who know nothing of Watchmen's (1986) themes and measure this as a sequel to the movie (most of these negative reviews are far off the mark)...

This show is incredibly well acted, produced, and written.

While some people have complained about it not relating to the source material, I don't think those comments have much merit. The original takes place in New York while this show takes place 30 years in the future of the graphic novel in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Some have complained that the show is too political, anti-conservative, and too racial. I wonder if those individuals ever really read the comic, as it was very political for its time too. The writer of the graphic novel, Alan Moore, even started that he wrote the story to be anti-Reaganism, and Reagan is essentially THE template for modern day conservatives. Moore also stated that he was making conscious decisions to make people uncomfortable regarding the themes presented.

Moore also said, "Our intention was to show how superheroes could deform the world just by being there, not that they'd have to take it over, just their presence there would make the difference... From the point where Dr. Manhattan appears, it slowly starts to go downhill from there - everything starts to change. He doesn't take over the country or make people subservient to him, but just his presence there makes everything begin to change. Yet on another level, if you equate Dr. Manhattan with the atom bomb, the atom bomb doesn't take over the world, but by being there it changes everything."

So in that spirit, HBO's Watchmen is on target with the tone and general themes of the original Watchmen. Some reviews have lamented Rosarch's depiction as a white supremacist. He's NOT. His journal being left out in the wild sans the author leaves behind a world that interprets his writings in their own way. By introducing the truth into the world without the author, the readers have gone in their own direction with it. And it goes wrong... just like Alan Moore stated things do in the original Watchmen.

I don't really understand people who complain about accurate depictions of racism or politics in comic book adjacent media, especially alleged comic books fans. Complaints about "woke" culture and "SJWs" seems silly when we've had characters and stories that have ALWAYS addressed these kinds of themes. Would these same reviewers hate the X-Men because the story is allegorical to racism and/or disenfranchisement of people in society who aren't WASPs? Would they hate Marvel's original Civil War now because it calls out fascism?

At any rate, the show is phenomenal and has been an absolute joy as so much is introduced but not explained as of yet. It is engaging and enthralling and the callbacks and Easter eggs to the graphic novel are liberally sprinkled throughout. Shed the "woe is me" mindset of some white viewers (and honestly, unless you're a white supremacist, there's no reason to feel attacked while you watch) and enjoy! Yes, there are actual horrific historic events that are shown, but how is that any different from X-Men showing young Magneto during the holocaust? Those who are triggered these days by hearing stories told from other groups besides white people really should grow up and realize the World is complex and varied. This is what makes comics so great!

I've been inspired to re-read the graphic novel as a result of the show and I really can't recommend it enough!

10/10 to balance out the insecure, biased, unmerited reviews that keep popping up (reviews are opinion, so it is nice when someone like myself offers a challenge based upon accuracy rather than isolated perspective).

I thought it was bad enough when the original mini-series was filtered through Zack Snyder’s barren imagination. Now I know you just need this Lindelof schmoe to have-at-it and you get some paint-by-numbers drivel with a heaping helping of cinematography to distract.

No likeable characters, no sane arcs. The charms of individual performances are all that’s offered and there’s so very few of those which charm.

One point added for filming in Downtown Decatur a few times.

There is an actual official 'wikipedia'-like page for the show, I assume because the writers filled the episodes forcing their political agendas they needed a place to relate the story to the audience. You may think this is in jest, but there were quite a few times where I heard someone bring up an important plot or character detail that was only on the wiki.

The best episode of the season was episode 5, unsurprisingly this was also the one episode they didn't fill with trying to force white guilt or racebait the audience the entire episode. Shame because there were a few good moments and elements, they're just completely smothered out by Hollywood pandering to it's own echo chamber.

I read the Watchmen graphic novel years ago after I saw V for Vendetta. Alan Moore is a genius and I imagine if he were dead and was made aware of this abomination, he would be doing somersaults in his grave. And I don't mean somersaults of joy, I mean the kind you would do to get away from the pile of puke puddling around your head. But you can't find relief because your grave is starting to fill up with copious amounts of vomit that this horrible show induces.
Serious question: who the hell signed off on making this show?

Absolutely terrible show. I am sick to death of Hollywood crap about how whitey is de debbil and needs to get viciously beaten and tortured by snarling brown people for his sins. It's such a tedious cliche, but that's clown world for you. Makes me glad I don't actually pay to watch HBO shows, if you know what I mean.

In the original (good) Watchmen story, something like this would be used as an insert to show the kind of cheap propaganda being used to manipulate the masses. Now there was a story that actually had a brain.

So, if you must know, they turned Rorshack's mask into a symbol of white supremacy, they masked the police officers with yellow band because they're scared of the people in Rorshack masks and then a nun with a son comes to the rescue. The comedian is the producer making us watch this garbage laughing all the way to the bank.

A mess of unfocused storytelling, uninteresting mysteries for the sake of mysteries - and a total lack of character motivations and development, made up the most disappointing season of television i have watched in a long time.

Anyone hoping for a taste of Moore's unique blend of Ditko, Eisner and Lovecraft, (Or compelling storytelling of any kind) stay far away from this one.

WATCHMEN 2019 has instead adopted an over the nose, loud, post-2016 message to beat you over the head with. If you're living in the USA and lean a particular direction politically, then this show will please you greatly. If you're like me, however, and live outside the USA and are not interested in the political dumpster-fire currently raging across the USA, then you’re out of luck. You see, the showrunner goes out of his way to incorporate his beliefs and political messaging into the show. You can try your best to avoid it but it won’t try to avoid you unless you avoid the show altogether. In fact, the show makes use of Rorschach’s legacy to do it to you. I know Alan Moore was displeased with how the fans took a liking to the Rorschach character even though the character was apparently written to be very unlikable. Well, Alan Moore is probably very happy with this show because Damon Lindelof takes a huge dump on Rorschach’s legacy in this show. It’s actually very disrespectful to the character and what he stood for.

Also, Dr. Manhattan does not make sense in this show. He behaves like he hasn’t lost his humanity. He behaves like someone who lives in the WATCHMEN universe without having gone through all the things that Jon Osterman did by the end of the original WATCHMEN. The show undoes his tragic character arc from the comics so they can write a nonsensical story around him. There are some clever moments in the show but it’s not enough to save it from how pretentious it really is. This show behaves like it’s a direct sequel to the comic. I’m here to tell you that it’s not. Go read Doomsday Clock issues 1-12 instead. At least there you’ll find some genuine storytelling and heartfelt moments.

To start, RT has deleted and withheld this review multiple times, so I moved over to metacritic.

The review: Another show trying to capitalize off pandering to the white guilted/poc victim culture. How can they do this? Well, what better way than to pick the only villainous group consisting of only white males? They had to think really hard to come up with this, can you guess who?? Thats right! The KKK!
You know, that way they can further push the idea that white males were and are the only humans in history to commit great acts of evil. Sure there's a few moments of POC committing acts of violence (Kong's character), but luckily (and i mean deliberately) they only do it to racist murders, so unlike Moore's work, there's not much room for moral greys yet. Aside from the extremely politically and racially prejudiced undertones, the cinematography is mediocre and the story is no different. As it is not a plot we haven't all basically encountered in a million other mediums.

To make things better Lindelof makes sure no one can ever wear a Rorschach mask again without being considered a racist. Hope you didn't buy your halloween costume early!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. very mild spoilers - ignore all the "political" complaints. On the other hand, this production hangs heavily off of interest and knowledge in the original comic/2009 movie plot. It does not stand on its own. Far from starting on the street with understandable characters and gradually getting into layers of meaning, you start with a subplot of one character trapped in some kind of alice in wonderland world that simply fills up 10 minutes of each episode with disjointed chatter. The main character is supposedly a batman type figure with a secret lair... right in the middle of downtown and on a policeman's salary. Married with kids with an army of anti-masks and very poorly hidden identity. Motivation? All sorts of people unexpectedly turn to the camera and say "tic toc". The richest person in the world comes knocking on someone's door at bedtime for no apparent reason, they say - your that billionaire! the response all catty - actually, I'm a trillionaire *smug little smirk*. More interesting visually than most things going, but some unwatchable moments and not much story if you get beyond the references to the original. What if there was a universe took the Tulsa Riots seriously? That's an interesting question - but in the watchman universe, they're still cleaning up after a squid attack that made 9/11 look like a sneeze, so, that reparation is the only thing that makes any sense in the universe where we're suppose to be. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is probably the most idiotic, most degenerated, most hilarious "thing" which was released recently.

It is nothing, but an open attack on culture, pushing forward cultural Marxism as much as possible.

This "thing" starts with re-fueling racism, about which nobody would care if these retarded animals wouldn't bring it back constantly.

But that's the lesser problem: the story is totally idiotic and uninteresting. The deep psychological theme which was the trait of the original movie, is completely missing, and it gives the place to some kind of angry 5-year old's narrative.

Almost every white people in the movie is broken, incompetent, or a (racist) villain, whereas EVERY black people in the movie is a hero. Even Rorschach, the biggest hero of the original movie are being used as a basis of the racist cult.

But if I don't like this, surely I am the racist!

And of course, we have Asians and gays, because no movie can be made without them (and the Asian also a villain, because she's still to white, so she must be).

On the top of that, one of the hero is a COMMUNIST! Guys! A COMMUNIST, whose ideology has been mass murdered hundreds of thousands of innocents, and does it still! This is one of the HEROES!!!

The whole garbage is just spitting humanity on its face.

90% of the cast has no acting skills, including the irritating protagonist girl, which is of course Manhattan's love, because he couldn't found somebody who is more mediocre. And of course, he also changed his white girl to a black girl.

Did I mention that while Manhattan is blue, his is now also BLACK, somehow?

He's IQ is now also highly below average, he essentially acting like a meth-addict, and he (the most powerful being in the universe) DIES by one of the most idiotic death possible, and gives his power to the mediocre, black protagonist.

And this is how this utterly garbage ends.

DO NOT WATCH this, ever!

Watchmen lacks the nuance to do either well. The stark departure in both tone and quality from the original source material should really come as to no surprise to fans that should by now be used to Hollywood ravaging their favorite intellectual properties in pursuit of cash.

Unfortunately, HBO seems to have shot themselves in the foot on this one. While viewing the season, I couldn't escape a simple question: "Who is this show for?"

Conservative viewers looking to have their views challenged will simply eye-roll the over-the-top nature of the show's premise. Minority viewers are sure to laugh out loud at the series antagonists almost cartoonish version of racism. Even ultra progressive viewers looking for confirmation bias are likely to walk away with an empty experience as the world the producers built feels so drastically alien to reality that it simply cannot be fathomable by an intelligent person.

Professional critics seem to be fawning over the idea behind the show while paying nothing beyond lip service to the actual execution of said idea. The production values are nice, the show feels technically slick and well-produced despite horrendous acting and particularly flat line delivery from series lead Regina King.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The show started out pretty good but as it went on it started to feel nothing like Watchmen. So much has changed and it doesn't feel like a continuation. They made Ozymandias an old oaf who makes clones and farts in court, but don't even get me started on how disappointing Dr. Manhattan was. In the apparent "best episode" of the show A God Walks Into Abar we see Dr. Manhattan for the first time, well kinda we never see his face and he looks and acts completely different from his graphic novel counterpart. He then takes on the form of a dead guy called Calvin and he becomes Angela's wife, he then later becomes Dr. Manhattan again and it's the most basic, unthreatening and boring dude in blue make up. He still resembles Calvin therefore he doesn't look anything like Dr. Manhattan and he just dies in the next episode. This show would just be better off as a standard superhero show and not a follow up to the far superior graphic novel Watchmen. Even Zack Snyder did a better job at making a live action Watchmen. So much stuff just doesn't correlate, it's like this is a new canon because Rorschach is now like the leader of a white supremacist cult for some reason and Dr. Manhattan is choosing to forget he has God-like powers to live with Angela as her husband with kids, even though Dr. Manhattan's whole character was that he doesn't understand or care for humans and he can't commit to a relationship. I will say that the one episode with Hooded Justice was pretty interesting and the show can be quite humourous at times, but that won't save it from the distinct changes it did to it's characters and story. TL;DR This is a spit in the face to the Watchmen franchise. Expand

Stay away. I see why it was cancelled after a season. How can you take something as beautiful and perfectly crafted as the Watchmen story line and turn it into such woke tripe.

A lot of the characters make really dumb decisions that they never would've done in the graphic novel. Expand

A well-made 'fan fiction' of what happens after the Watchmen movie (but mostly comics).

This story was interestingly not from the author of the Watchmen comics so it is technically not canon. However the story and characters make me wish it was.

This is a great re-imaging of what life in the world was like after the impact from the last movie. If you havent at least watched the Watchmen movie, do that first, otherwise you will be very lost.

I take off two points because some parts dragged on too long, like some flashbacks, and the conclusion of some characters seemed without purpose. I'm also happy that this ends after one season and they don't try to drag it on for 5 seasons. End it while it's good!

PS. For the people calling this 'woke'; I don't like forced wokeness but nothing about this is woke. It is not the real world and it doesnt pretend to be. Just because history in this world led to the clansman basically having more power in the world does not mean the show is also saying that it is also like this in the real world.

Watchmen will remain as Lindelof's unique opus for the ages, which, while being a fabulous adaptation of the even better graphic novel (written by Alan Moore, illustrated by Dave Gibbons) and an Orwellian sci-fi mystery, succeeds as one of the top-notch cinematic performances from the 2010s. 85% Expand

I am far left of leftist and even farther left of liberal; my politics would be considered extreme by some. On paper, I agree with the sentiment found in Watchmen, specifically the study of the alt-right and the racial tensions that exist in our cities. Notice how I'm painting with broad strokes here; the show does the same.

By trying to say a lot, Watchmen ends up saying a whole lot of nothing. It is the quintessential neoliberal wet dream: a strong black woman beats the **** out of the cartoonishly evil supremacist group, the big communist (because Marx is in style with the young intellectuals) beats the **** out of the cartoonishly evil supremacist group, the sigma interrogator mentally beats the **** out of the cartoonishly evil supremacist group...

I'm not saying that identity politics shouldn't be studied, or that we shouldn't represent marginalized groups, or that we shouldn't envision worlds in which my ideological enemies are given their due. What I am saying is that making such sensitive issues so binary offers absolutely nothing to any existing discourse. It's reddit politics where we reduce centuries of pain and exploitation down to an easily-digestible meal that appeases the left-center libs and pisses off the right-leaning chuds who are afraid of their own shadows. It's politics for people that don't understand politics. Real racists, real bigots, real xenophobes are much more subtle: they exist right under our noses in our offices, our school boards, our management positions. Watchmen just wants to throw them all in a trailer park and have them look like dumb, poor, Facebook-posting morons.

Say more. Be more ruthless with your agenda. Call out the fascist undercurrents running across America, the pedophilic conservative global elite, the transphobic elected officials advocating for genocide. Keep calling out the racism, but don't turn around and try to "both sides" police brutality by trying to make us care for cops that commit racially motivated crimes. The Flanderization of the core characters only further diminishes the message here. Sister Night is too one-note to make any analysis stick; Ozymandias is fanservice bait whose arc amounts to nothing. Dr. Manhattan is the victim of like a thousand retcons and is basically unrecognizable from the god the comics left us with.

Most pertinently, though, is Rorschach; the whole Kavalry organization is a perfect study of the right's securitized view of politics with idolization and line-drawing done purely by shared interests rather than morals and values. Kavalry misunderstood Rorschach's mission and trauma much like the real-world right misunderstands people like Elon Musk, Andrew Tate, and Ron DeSantis. As for the rest of the show, it's okay. It's visual barbiturates: the edits and action sequences are meant to satisfy the blithest audiences imaginable. The show's inconsistent use of violence (we go from blowing up cows in the pilot to a horrendously choreographed police raid in ep. 2) is confusing as a fan of the original comic, since the scarcity of violence was much more impactful thematically.

Characters and costumes are visually fine and the cast did the best they could with the dialogue they were given. Color grading is, as expected, poor; HBO seems to love raw lighting because they never bother to grade their damn footage. The show is never unwatchable but it does almost nothing to separate itself from similar programming visually. Imagine this show with Fukunaga's tempo and blocking... man.

As a sequel to the comics, Watchmen is pretty underwhelming. Lacking the nuance of the original, this series feels more like a poor contextualization rather than a necessary sequel. The characters are meant to be rooted for; there's little examination of power and justice; there are no moral conflicts aside from the obvious 'heroes vs. racists' skirmishes. Save for a few Easter eggs, there is very little carryover between the comic and the show. "Oh, look! Electric cars because of Manhattan! Oh, look! The stencil of the lovers! Oh, look! Squids!" is as far as the show wants to go. I still can't think of a single reason why Dr. Manhattan would come back to Mars after **** off to an entirely different galaxy in the comic. Watchmen is boring, genuinely. It lacks the allegorical punch that would excuse the wayward plot, and it fails to expand upon the original in any meaningful way. The milquetoast visuals do enough to keep one engaged but don't offer any style of their own.

Why exactly someone thought we needed a sequel to an unadaptable comic is a mystery for sure, and it's one I'll never unravel. I don't get why Hollywood just can't leave good enough alone.
