Wow the alt-right is truly the whiniest group of people. Show is great. Loved the comic, not so much the movie where al the characters were insanely strong and Kung-fu masters. Oh, dear, people are unhappy about their comics being too left-leaning again.

The CW’s Batwoman was initially getting review bombed by a bunch of people (because … women and gays? Not in my Gotham!) and now that trend has continued withOh, dear, people are unhappy about their comics being too left-leaning again.

The CW’s Batwoman was initially getting review bombed by a bunch of people (because … women and gays? Not in my Gotham!) and now that trend has continued with HBO’s Watchmen series, which premiered this weekend. According to CBR, the show has a 93% Fresh rating from critics but is scored at 49% by audiences. Of course, there are those with legitimate criticism of the series—as I have my own—but many other complaints are about the show’s perceived “politically correct” narrative and it being “too woke,” upset that this new series has a very political stance.

Except that, you know, the original comic by Alan Moore is super political, left-leaning, and was created to mock a lot of things. But you know, people don’t actually like to think about it, especially when it comes to one character in particular: Rorschach, Ted Cruz’s favorite.

In the show, there is a white supremacist group called the “Seventh Kavalry” in Tulsa that has taken to Rorschach’s black-and-white mask, and they are acting up in response to President Robert Redford’s push to implement reparations to those affected by past racial injustices. That absolutely makes sense, since Rorschach, in the comics, is outwardly (checks the list) racist, homophobic, sexist, and a total and complete fascist. Alan Moore literally wrote him to make fun of The Question, Mr. A, and a bunch of other Steve Ditko comic characters that the artist/writer used to promote his Ayn Randian ideals.

Watchmen has always been about taking the idea of superheroes to its natural conclusion with the events in world history. That’s why, at least from my perspective, the issue of reparations makes sense in this context. For the first time in a long time, that is a serious topic of debate, and with the presidency something you can do for unlimited terms in the world of Watchmen, a president, especially a popular one, could tackle that kind of legislation. In a place like Tulsa, which has always had a racial divide and dark history of white inhabitants being antagonistic when their Black counterparts make it, this just seems like the natural conclusion—especially when Rorschach’s journals were shared with the equivalent of Breitbart News.

These white supremacists are the logical conclusion to his rhetoric.

Does that mean you’re a white supremacist if that was your favorite character in the comics? No … unless you actually are a white supremacist. Rorschach is an interesting character because Alan Moore is a good writer and knows how to teach without preaching. His work is layered and thoughtful but also filled with clear intent. From what I have watched of the show, while it isn’t perfect, I’m willing to give Damon Lindelof room to tell the story as long as he does the same. Well, as much room as you can give a former Lost showrunner, but that’s a whole different kettle of alien squid.

Still, more than anything, I wish that audience reviews stopped being a way for people to drag something for being “too woke,” because it creates bad faith for everyone. We are allowed to have different tastes and have our political leaning affect out taste, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be fair.… Expand

The show must be threatening to a few groups with extremist ideas and beliefs, and that in and of itself is a reason to see what this show has to say and to give it a chance. I am not a watchmen comic loyalist and am watching to show indecently of the comic. It is a very intriguing story. The political hints dull as the story unfolds into something much larger.

First, this is not a freaking political debate, this is a sci-fi fantasy show so relax with all of the correlation to racism and our history in America. Second, every single person giving this show a bad review clearly cannot follow the plot or dialogue. The show has 100 different ties to the graphic novel (mostly subtle) but a true fan of the novel would recognize them. I am sorry if the users writing reviews are too dense to understand all of the nuances but the creators of the this show are not going to hold your hand and walk you through explanations. They expect you to know the lore, and expect you to be smart enough to keep up. If you hate this show, then this show is simply over your head. Go watch something easy to understand on basic cable TV instead. This show is brilliant.… Expand

A genius sequel to novel. Watchmen for here and now. Intricate and faithful interpretation of the limited series with awesome new credentials. Many butthurt rushed to tear Lindelof a new one. Now they secretly watching and loving his work.

A few episodes in: I love it. Smart, thought provoking, relevant and relatable. All the things that drive people nuts about this show are the things I adore. I don't need to see the same movie and characters again, I've seen their arc.

After finale: This series was a masterpiece. Some episodes had some wonky pacing. Others were some of the best television I have seen in years. The episode about Hooded Justice was brilliant. "A God Walks Into Abar" (great title) was a symphonic puzzle solved before our eyes. Anyone that doesnt like this has a problem with race, homosexuality and doesn't want to see a show remind them that white supremacy is alive and well in the world they live in. The very last shot of the last episode is the new briefcase from Pulp Fiction. Love it.… Expand

These are the kind of people that hate any media that has any perspective of people of color. I guarantee you most of them haven't watched past the pilot episode if they even watched it at all. The only 'provocative' or 'radical leftist' theme here is just the brief portrayal of white supremacist militias; I don't know what it says about you if you're offended when anyone says white supremacy is wrong, destructive, or just a problem we are dealing with. This is not an attack on you unless you identify as a white supremacist in a militia. The masked militia in this show is just one set-piece of many in this show. Race plays a minor role. Also what idiot thinks the Watchmen comic wasn't political? Hate to break it to you, but Alan rickman is very left field, even left of Jeremy Corbyn who he publicly supports.
Anyways, so far, i love the lead actors and the story setup. Looking forward to the rest of the season and how this show will expand on its mystery.… Expand

Since I am grown adult who doesn't have a fragile ego I loved this show. Its pretty telling that people see racism as a personal attack. That being said the show is amazing. Great acting, good story telling and the promise to be a great series.

Realy great for those who will discover the universe of Watchmen. Splendid for all the fan of the graphic novel, despite what Alan Moore himself told.

The first episode is quite slow and maybe boring for those who expect somethin like "The Boys" but it become more and more powerfull and intersting with time. With the episode 2 and more with episode 3 it becomes more clear and intelligent, with less "boring" moment.

The alternate history setting is probably hard on people who aren't used to encountering the concept in science fiction. They will see "political".

Not because I want to prohibit other people enjoying the genre but because I am a science fiction fan and it's gobbling up all the allotted time and money production companies set aside for the genre as a whole. Music is very good, some actors are excellent, plot is ridiculous and setting is fitting for the current state of the world. The way the Tusla Race Massacre was covered in the first episode captivated me. Definitely a fan, and I can't wait to see the way the rest of the season pans out. Anytime Black and Brown people talk about things of the past that have shaped their lives, there's a certain sect of people that are always triggered. Funny how that works. You can tell they also have limited knowledge on the subject matter because they've completely forgotten the political nature of The Watchmen comics being that the beginning of the comics has to deal with the Cold War between the US and Russia. Comics ALWAYS have different runs, and this is no different. Don't let the haters deter you. Challenge yourself if you're not fragile.… Expand

I won’t go out of my way to like or dislike anything because the main protagonist is black or a woman or white or brown or man or any combinations of these. Also, I believe that the Watchmen books are infinitely better than the Zack Snyder hyper-stylized movie adaptation. Don’t get me wrong. The movie is fun but it misses the point.

I also don’t agree with Alan Moore’s general tendency to thumb down any attempt to turn his books into another medium - movies or television. That said, here’s what I think about the TV series (one episode in).

PROS
- Good setup overall with the background story and the current state that the world is in. Good suspense and story.
- “Superhero” selection is very interesting and very human (no “powers” - yet)
- Decent suspense; pretty decent story
- Good background music / score

CONS
- Action sequences aren’t top-notch (they’re not bad either)
- Overall, everything is “good” not “great”

I want to give this a 6.5/10... am giving it a 7/10. How the story develops will be interesting (will update the rating accordingly).… Expand

Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, Watchmen (1986) is well-known for its deconstruction of the superhero genre, dismantling and interrogating virtually every generic trope so as to question the very purpose of such stories. At the same time, its depiction of Cold War paranoia and condemnation of right-wing idolatry are front and centre without ever seeming forced. Created by Damon Lindelof (co-creator of Lost and The Leftovers), the most significant thing about this adaptation is that it isn't an adaptation; it's an original story set 33 years after the events of the comic. And is it any good? It's not as good as The Leftovers (what is?), but it is an exceptional piece of work. The acting is immense, the writing is challenging, the aesthetic is stunning. All in all, Watchmen is that rarest of beasts – a show which lives up to the hype.

Familiarity with the plot of the original isn't a requirement so as to appreciate the sequel, as you're given all the world-building back-info you need, but it can certainly help you get the most out of Lindelof's intricate narrative and thematic tapestry, especially in the earlier episodes. The world of Watchmen is a slightly different version of our world, in which the 1930s saw the rise of "costumed adventurers"; ordinary people who took to the streets to fight crime. The show is set in Tulsa, OK in 2018. White supremacist groups have been on the rise, and police are now allowed to wear masks and remain anonymous. In essence, the story follows the fallout from a murder, which is soon discovered to be much more complex than originally thought.

Lindelof has stated that he wanted to tackle whatever socio-political issue that was to 2019 as the Cold War was to 1985, and to him, it "felt like it was undeniably race and policing". Politically then, the show does much the same thing as the comic did – it deploys a real-world socio-political problem in a not quite 1:1 fictional milieu. In Reagan's America, it was apocalyptic Cold War paranoia, whereas in Trump's Divided States, it's the rise of right-wing extremism.

The theme of white and black comes up time and again throughout the series. For example, in "An Almost Religious Awe", a member of the KKK offshoot, Seventh Kavalry, asserts that "white men in masks are heroes. Black men in masks are scary," whilst in "See How They Fly", another member of the group proclaims, "it is extremely difficult to be a white man in America right now". In the same episode, speaking of the President, who has introduced a system of reparations, it's stated, "first he took our guns. And then he made us say sorry. Over and over again. Sorry. Sorry for the alleged sins of those who died decades before we were born. Sorry for the colour of our skin."

Another major theme is how racial tensions are manifested in law enforcement. As the show begins, we're watching Trust in the Law, a 1921 Oscar Micheaux film about Deputy Bass Reeves, aka The Black Marshal (Bass Reeves was a real marshal and Micheaux was a real director, although Trust in the Law is not a real film). Here, the bad guy wears white (and is white) and the good guy wears black (and is black), thus inverting assumptions. The first scene set in 2018 does something similar as a menacing black cop pulls over a nervous white driver. These two scenes form a beautiful bit of visual story-telling, establishing the centrality of racial tensions, conveying that such things are often more complex than they appear. The show's aesthetic, especially, the cinematography and editing, is also worthy of praise. "This Extraordinary Being", for example, is shot primarily in black and white, and takes place in the 30s and 40s, with the cinematography employing the odd bit of colour here and there within the black and white photography to focus our attention on particular objects. As for "A God Walks Into Abar", if you're interested in learning about editing, watch this episode. Cut by Henk Van Eeghan, it essentially tries to give a visual representation of how Doctor Manhattan experiences time – with every moment in his existence happening all at once, so he can 'remember' things that haven't happened yet. It's a spellbinding exercise in stylistic control, with flawless time jumps that fold organically into one another to form a single cohesive template.

Watchmen is an exceptionally good show. There will be fans of the comic who'll dislike it on principle. There will also be those who accuse it of pandering to a liberal PC agenda, and there'll be those who simply don't like the idea of a Watchman TV show with a black woman at its centre. Make no mistake, however, this show has been put together by people who know, appreciate, love, and understand the comic. Thematically complex, aesthetically breathtaking, brilliantly acted, Watchmen is an exceptional piece of television.… Expand

Red (ironic?) reviews will shout about "woke" this and "force fed" that without taking a single second to examine why they react so strongly to this story. This show is smart, bold and almost dizzyingly ambitious. I often ended an episode in a weird psychedelic like state. The opening scene asks you to question what you really know about American history, I know I was quickly googling "Tulsa 1921" before the credits even finished. History is full of horror and you can't brush those trauma's under the rug. From a film making stand point the directors make wonderful use of the visual language of a multitude of genres from super hero movies to old westerns, silent films, horror movies and so much more. The acting is incredible top to bottom and the music and score is even better than that. This show is a true triumph. It miraculously creates it's own footwork in this world and adds wonderful modern context to the book.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Initially it was a bit confusing, but it picked up pace slowly. And that's exactly what's so good about this serial. It doesn't rush at any point. It goes slow, elaborating everything in detail, even the boring parts (which later turn out to be a big plot part). Earlier I wasn't able to understand the whole Ozymandias part, till the Dr Manhattan episode, and as soon as I understood my mind was blown. Same goes for Angela's husband. He seemed kinda annoying and unnecessary, but the moment it was revealed he was Dr Manhattan, my opinion about him took a complete U-Turn.

The action scenes, the visual appeal, the story, the message, literally everything about this movie is amazing. A recommended watch for all 18+ audience who can appreciate dark stories.… Expand

Really enjoyed the WM TV series. I you expect to see more of WM from the brilliant Zack Snyder movie, you could be dissapointed, because most of the timey, this feels more like a new franchise, than being part of the WM franchise. I'm only 4 episodes in and boy is this show interesting!
If you liked the original comic, without being one of those that think that the own the story because they liked it before it was popular, and also if you are not intimidated or biasedI'm only 4 episodes in and boy is this show interesting!

Of course you have to know the original Comic to enjoy it to the fullest (it's easy, I binge read it in 2 days before watching it).
But the characters are so interesting, the stories so intricate, and the performances so captivating that if you aren't hooked by minute 7 of episode 4, I'll give you your money back!!… Expand

It is all too often that movies and shows on super heroes ignore the realities of why we may need those heroes in the world. This story hits close to home with it being based in Tulsa, OK and around the surviving lineage of Tulsa natives from Black Wall Street (real life). Dont let these racist clowns on here shy you away from the story here bc it is captivating in nearly every moment. I know I’m a little late to the party here, but having finished season 1 of Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen, I now feel the need to discuss my overall impressions. To put it simply, the show is just amazing! I’ve always been impressed by Watchmen’s handling of mature subject matter, most often the persistent gratuitous violence, but whilst HBO’s adaptation (or rather late sequel) does have its fair share of said violence, it instead chooses to focus more on pushing its own political agenda. Although this has bothered many people, as they believe it ignores the core of what Watchmen is about, I am hugely in favor of this new approach. The series opens with the Tulsa massacre of 1921, in which Klansmen viciously attacked a well respected black community and slaughtered as many civilians as they could. This event not only fits perfectly in to the show’s complex narrative, but also raises awareness of this lesser known horrific incident that is now a permanent black mark on America’s history. Fast forwards nearly 100 years, and we are put in the perspective of our protagonist Angela Abraham, played by Regina King. She is an officer in a special unit solely dedicated to destroying a cult known as the seventh cavalry, who are effectively an evolved version of the KKK, giving you plenty of reason right off the bat to hate them. The 7th Cavalry formed in the past based on the words of Rorschach (which have been twisted over time), and now each member wears a version of his iconic mask. The majority of the show is set roughly 4 years after an event known as the White Night, in which Seventh Cavalry members attacked the homes of every cop in Tulsa at 12am Christmas Day, which now means every officer is required to wear masks and keep their profession secret. We also get a glimpse of a system that forces police to only draw their weapons in life threatening situations, suggesting that in the past the cops have been abusing their powers.
Regina King is absolutely phenomenal as Detective Abraham, also known as Sister Night, by having that perfect balance of being badass and merciless, whilst also having enough of a personality for us to empathise with her. The rest of the supporting cast is also stellar, with my favorite character being Tim Blake Nelson’s Looking Glass, who unfortunately did not get enough screen time for my liking.
I will say that if you go into this show with any expectations at all, you are bound to be disappointed in some way. If you hope for it to be a faithful sequel to the original comic your expectations won’t be fully met, and neither will they be if you hope it will be something completely new.
I recommend everyone who does watch it do some background research, like either read the comic series, or watch the Zach Snyder film (which I was also a big fan of), and watch a video explaining the differences between film and comic. Another large criticism I have is that a lot of the stuff with the character Ozymandias really drags, even though Jeremy Irons was the perfect casting choice. I also wasn’t very convinced by the show’s main antagonist and their super-plan (which I won’t spoil). It’s not that I didn’t like it, but I kind of expected more from a series that so impressively handles its portrayal of prejudice and racial injustices. The first episode is absolutely incredible in my opinion, as it perfectly sets up the world and narrative, however the following 3 slightly stray from the plot, and kind of leave many of our questions from the pilot unanswered for too long. Otherwise, everything else about the show I absolutely loved! It is by far the 2019 series I most enjoyed, and I really hope they decide to continue in the future.… Expand

Whoever is in this string is definitely impressed. The shooting technique is superb. In some Ep, there is a black-and-white image with awesome styling, camera angles, pictures, background music. It’s amazing, gripping, wild and exciting. I love how it isn’t a direct adaptation of the comics but a continuation. The fact that it sends the incels sobbing into their fleshlights is just a bonus.

I'm guilty though, I waited until the whole season was released and watched all 9 episodes in a row, which I'm happy I did.
I dare to say that every single episode is at least interesting and engaging, sure, it can be confounding, and I understand people just not tolerating it. That being said, it's not really fare to right off the bat call this series junk. This is most certaintly not your average blockbuster popcorn experience and if it's not your taste, just let it be.
And people, this is NOT Zack Snyder's series version of Watchmen, it's a whole new identity, stop complaining so much when you get something actually new.
So going back to my actual opinion, yes I do think this is special. It's different, it's complex, and unpopular statement here, I don't think it's a mess. Actually it surprised me how carefully crafted it was, some refreshing subtlety in display here, if you really pay enough attention.
The character work is honestly fascinating and very compelling, the story is crazy but even the show itself is aware of that and it makes a joke about it every now and then. The social commentary is very well incorporated and may feel heavy-handed to some, but it's an actual crucial part of the whole story so it shouldn't feel overbloated.
Anyway, I'd definately recommend it but be aware it's not your typical mainstream entertaintment, it's a challenging experience but overall worth it.… Expand

Let me preface this review by stating that I am a comic book reader. Let me preface this review by stating that I am a comic book reader. I have read Watchmen for the first time decades ago. And while I obviously love the idea of there being more Watchmen outside the original comic for me to consume, those newer works mostly didn't really impress me that much. Like DC's group of mini series they published a couple of years or back or the movie adaptation.

But damn, I loved this show. In the beginning I was sceptic because honestly it didn't feel like there was any association with Watchmen at all besides the name of the show. However after being a couple of episodes in, I started to realise that this was actually exactly what I want in a new Watchmen product. Not lookin at the past like the newer comics did, not an adaptation of the original Watchmen comic like the movie which would never live up to the comic itself, but a continuation of what happens next in the Watchmen universe. And the association with the Watchmen universe becomes a whole lot more important as you watch on.

This was an great season (or mini series I guess) with an ending I loved where people can decide for themselves what happened. I am in the camp that she wasn't able to do it. One of the things that will stick with me is the fantastic 45 minutes of television which was the flashback episode. That episode looked and evoked emotion in an amazing way. If I had to compare it to something, I would say it's like that flashback episode in Twin Peaks season 3, or Legion season 1. Great television all.

I honestly don't understand the negative reviews, but to each their own I guess. I thoroughly enjoyed the first and only season of the Watchmen tv show. I'd easily recommend it to everybody. Especially if you're a fan of the Watchmen comic.… Expand

So, for the rest of us sane people with good taste who appreciate HBO and what they do, this show is absolute genius, and easily one of the best shows of 2019. I don't think I need to say much beyond that. The writing, storytelling, pacing, acting, action, production... Everything is simply fantastic and often brilliant and completely lives up to the insanely high standards of most of HBO's content.

The finale is one of the best episodes of TV ever. I was freaking out the entire time and just blown away. Must. Watch. Television.… Expand

I feel sorry for the people who got caught up on the white supremacy aspect of this show, and decided to either tune out completely after a couple episodes, or continued watching but in the process completely overlooked everything amazingI feel sorry for the people who got caught up on the white supremacy aspect of this show, and decided to either tune out completely after a couple episodes, or continued watching but in the process completely overlooked everything amazing this show has to offer because their preconceived notions prevented them from TRULY experiencing the narrative. Yes, white supremacy is a threat within the show and a major theme that the creator purposely intertwined within the narrative. He wants to evoke emotion within the viewer, and he uses hyperbole to do so. But by shutting your brain off because of it, you are doing yourself a disservice. If you interpret the show as being one-sided political propaganda, you obviously didn't watch past the first couple episodes, or you are simply being close-minded and completely misinterpreting everything. I just finished episode 7 and the show has only gotten better and better in my mind. A slow-cooking intrigue...amazingly crafted, yet cryptic and quirky with science fiction/alternative history themes underlying the whole thing. And one of the most amazing original soundtracks of any television show I've watched to date.

And to the people who are upset that it is "nothing" like the comic...how it ties into the original comic becomes more clear as time goes on. It was never meant to be a direct adaptation, and that was made clear before the show even aired. And even as a fan of the original comic series, I'm extremely glad it's not a direct adaptation, as I think that would have been fairly status quo and boring. If you continue watching it past the first couple episodes you come to find how it ties to the comics in an unconventional, yet smart way.

To each their own, and I respect anyone who has differing opinions on shows that I personally enjoy. That type of thing is highly subjective. But I do find it a little immature to pass this particular show off as liberal propaganda, or a useless piece of trash because of it not being a DIRECT adaptation. Again this show is a slow-burner, but you are rewarded as time goes on, especially if you are a true fan of science fiction.… Expand

The show has improved a lot from my original review. It's still nowhere near the quality of Alan Moore's work, but it is reasonably fun television compared to what else is out there. The elements that were added to or borrowed from the original work are the weakest parts of the show still. But the story isn't bad on its own. I'm genuinely interested to see where it is going and unlike with Lindelof's previous work I don't think he will totally screw his audience this time. He didn't totally screw this one up. I'd still like to see an authentic Watchmen port that does true justice to the original, but that just isn't going to happen because it isn't accessible to mainstream audiences. The Watchmen motion comic was the best I think we're going to get. As far as tv goes, this is still not really truly the Watchmen but it's a passable alternative.

I'm a huge fan of Trent Reznor and his Nine Inch Nails and watching such wonderful series with his music makes the whole experience even more amazing. Despite that, is curious to see that a series so vocal against white suprematism receives so many negative reviews – especially because from their comment they sound like properly racist people. As I read the negative reviews for this show, it becomes apparent that either the trolls didn't read the original, or they were too stupid to understand the political subtext. The show is faithful to the mood and plot of the original novel. If you are a true fan, you will probably love seeing what became of the watchmen universe twenty years after the events of the original. The acting is superb, and all of the characters are there in some way. The political points aren't one sided, but the show does deal with white supremacists, as did the graphic novel. And, anyone who thinks a woman shouldn't be able to kick ass needs to challenge Rhonda Rousey to a fight.… Expand

Lindelof's approach is not canon and it's fine. Watchmen's current and official sequel in the comic books ends on Wednesday with the release of Doomsday Clock #12 where the long-awaited confrontation between Dr. Manhattan and Superman will finally occur.

But personally I think it was a great show. He took the world from the comic book and gave it a different voice.
He built an interesting mystery around certain characters from the original story and rooted it in fairly relevant themes that as it showed from its first episode and until its last, encompass decades of hatred that are still alive today.

Until now it's believed that it will only be a stand-alone season and if so I'm okay with it.
I'm open to a second one, but I think the story that was told was enough. And believe me that I enjoyed it week by week since it started.

My only but and that's why I didn't give it 10 is that despite the good handling of plot, Lindelof made a mistake in order to make his romantic story work and that is that he weakened Dr. Manhattan. A lot.

I understand it's his vision, but you're telling me that Ozymandias being the smartest person in the world didn't manage to capture that omnipotent being but a flock of racists did? C'mon.

Nonetheless it was a great show. If you haven't watch it, start now.… Expand

Lindelof does a great job of remaining true to the spirit of the original Watchmen while telling an original story. It's a logical extension of the ideas that Moore and Gibbons touched on in the original.

So yes, this series isn't a rehash of the graphic novel, but as it progresses a lot of mythos pops up. A once in a decade kind of show. HBO does it again - they are pushing the envelope like they did with West World. And I do appreciate them bringing the racial Tensions to the forefront. I mean, this is something that - like it or not - we as citizens of the United States are struggling with. I mean you can tell from the comments, a lot of people want a show that doesn't challenge them. This is a challenging show but can be especially challenging for conservatives and those that have trouble sympathizing with the plight African Americans. However, that adide, it's just a fantastic and original story. There's absolutely no way this is a 0 or like 5. This show is a 9 minimum. But because of all the haters on this site based solely on the politics (reality!) of the history and conflicts in the show, I need to give this an absolute 10. This is engaging sci-fi with an intense black female lead. It's not heavy handed at all, they just had one major scene regarding the historical massacre of a black community in Tulsa. That doesn't make this show a 0. It's not sjw it's not any of that crap. It's just a phenomenonal show!… Expand

I was an avid reader of the series back when it came out, and I am always wary of all the crap DC has pulled, and I hate comic book TV series in general (The Boys was good!) and I was NOT looking forward to HBO ruining it.

But this is amazing. If you don't like you were probably cheering on the Tulsa massacre yet realized what was up after 30 minutes, and started stewing because You Had Been Had.

Good. Keep crying like little girls.
I loved Chappelle, I loved the Joker, and there is somewhat of a viewer/reviewer disparity - I realize that Metacritics has some weird biasing going on - but don't you dare try to paint this with the same brush.
Highly recommended. This is Great TV.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't listen to people who know nothing of Watchmen's (1986) themes and measure this as a sequel to the movie (most of these negative reviews are far off the mark)...

This show is incredibly well acted, produced, and written.

While some people have complained about it not relating to the source material, I don't think those comments have much merit. The original takes place in New York while this show takes place 30 years in the future of the graphic novel in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Some have complained that the show is too political, anti-conservative, and too racial. I wonder if those individuals ever really read the comic, as it was very political for its time too. The writer of the graphic novel, Alan Moore, even started that he wrote the story to be anti-Reaganism, and Reagan is essentially THE template for modern day conservatives. Moore also stated that he was making conscious decisions to make people uncomfortable regarding the themes presented.

Moore also said, "Our intention was to show how superheroes could deform the world just by being there, not that they'd have to take it over, just their presence there would make the difference... From the point where Dr. Manhattan appears, it slowly starts to go downhill from there - everything starts to change. He doesn't take over the country or make people subservient to him, but just his presence there makes everything begin to change. Yet on another level, if you equate Dr. Manhattan with the atom bomb, the atom bomb doesn't take over the world, but by being there it changes everything."

So in that spirit, HBO's Watchmen is on target with the tone and general themes of the original Watchmen. Some reviews have lamented Rosarch's depiction as a white supremacist. He's NOT. His journal being left out in the wild sans the author leaves behind a world that interprets his writings in their own way. By introducing the truth into the world without the author, the readers have gone in their own direction with it. And it goes wrong... just like Alan Moore stated things do in the original Watchmen.

I don't really understand people who complain about accurate depictions of racism or politics in comic book adjacent media, especially alleged comic books fans. Complaints about "woke" culture and "SJWs" seems silly when we've had characters and stories that have ALWAYS addressed these kinds of themes. Would these same reviewers hate the X-Men because the story is allegorical to racism and/or disenfranchisement of people in society who aren't WASPs? Would they hate Marvel's original Civil War now because it calls out fascism?

At any rate, the show is phenomenal and has been an absolute joy as so much is introduced but not explained as of yet. It is engaging and enthralling and the callbacks and Easter eggs to the graphic novel are liberally sprinkled throughout. Shed the "woe is me" mindset of some white viewers (and honestly, unless you're a white supremacist, there's no reason to feel attacked while you watch) and enjoy! Yes, there are actual horrific historic events that are shown, but how is that any different from X-Men showing young Magneto during the holocaust? Those who are triggered these days by hearing stories told from other groups besides white people really should grow up and realize the World is complex and varied. This is what makes comics so great!

I've been inspired to re-read the graphic novel as a result of the show and I really can't recommend it enough!

10/10 to balance out the insecure, biased, unmerited reviews that keep popping up (reviews are opinion, so it is nice when someone like myself offers a challenge based upon accuracy rather than isolated perspective).… Expand

Good start. Reviews suggest anti-white implications, however, I am not American and do not come to this conclusion. This is a great re-imaging of what life in the world was like after the impact from the last movie. If you havent at least watched the Watchmen movie, do that first, otherwise you will be very lost.

I take off two points because some parts dragged on too long, like some flashbacks, and the conclusion of some characters seemed without purpose. I'm also happy that this ends after one season and they don't try to drag it on for 5 seasons. End it while it's good!

PS. For the people calling this 'woke'; I don't like forced wokeness but nothing about this is woke. It is not the real world and it doesnt pretend to be. Just because history in this world led to the clansman basically having more power in the world does not mean the show is also saying that it is also like this in the real world.… Expand
