The pilot spent most of its time introducing its characters and setting up a plot. In my opinion this show is going to be great. Jared is an incredible actor, and its cast well. I've already got my theories after one episode. It's fresh, and spoke to a variety of emotions which is what brings you into a show and keeps you interested.

Walker deals with up to date social agendas in modern Texas -- gender, racial, immigrant issues, while raveling the mysterious death of a ranger's wife and going through emotional family drama and familial reunion that everyone would like.

Jared Padalecki does a solid job performing and I feel that the emotions conveyed through the tone and his acting are great. Other actors did well too. The drama feels real enough and it makes sense to me.

I always found wild west and Texas rangers to be cool.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fans of the original "Walker, Texas Ranger" may be dismayed to find a hero who is a lot more flawed and a lot more of a family man than the original. But folks looking for a procedural drama that is trying to raise awareness about police brutality, racism and xenophobia while still humanizing the people involved will find a lot to appreciate.

Gone are the all-action plots, weirdly awkward dialogue, and horribly stereotyped Native American mysticism. In its place is a Texan family man mourning the loss of his wife and trying to reconnect with his kids and his family and adjust to a changing world.

The show intentionally features a very diverse cast of characters, and the plots are likewise updated for more modern sensibilities. Walker can no longer just take the law into his own hands - when he punches a suspect, he faces repercussions for his actions. Not the least of those repercussions is the anger of his partner, whose path as a ranger is much more difficult than his because she is Latina. If Walker messes up, she rightfully points out, it'll be her career that suffers far more than his.

The show goes out of the way to deliver on the promise of being an ensemble cast, and the actors fall naturally into their roles. Jared Padalecki, Mitch Pileggi and Lindsey Morgan all turn in very strong performances, but all of the main cast are enjoyable to watch and have great chemistry. And yes, that includes the dogs. (Is it just me, or should more shows have dogs on them?)

Problems & precautions: The music mixing is more than a little ham-handed. It definitely differentiates the show from Padalecki's previous stint on Supernatural, but in places it distracts from the action and dialogue. And the glowy dead wife flashbacks are going to get old real fast if they're overused. It'd be nice to just see flashbacks to them together rather than just see her in soft, diffused lighting.

All in all, I was a lot more pleasantly surprised than I was expecting to be. I'll definitely be tuning in again next episode.

Though you can't replace Chuck Norris and his karate, this show comes pretty close! I enjoyed the pilot, the characters and it left me wanting to watch the next episode. Love that actors from other great series are in this one. Highly recommend!

Walker is a show with great potential, since it has very well written background story for it's characters. The characters are complex, without weighting on the show's fluidity. The acting is on point and I can't wait to see more of the dynamic between Cordell and Micki, but also Cordell and his brother, Liam.

Feels more like a family drama than a butt-kicking crime show.

Once things settled down, we appreciated the thoughtful approach of the new series. ... Padalecki’s version of Cordell Walker has a real family situation he needs to address, all the while trying to protect his home state from drug cartels and other bad guys. It’s a refreshing new take on a character that was very one-dimensional in the 1990s.

Its first outing seems unsteady and uncertain, surprisingly so for a franchise that has historically traded on certitude.
