While the video essays in Voir sometimes dip too far into pretentiousness, the dreamy visuals and insightful analysis make this a compelling watch for aspiring critics, as well as viewers looking for fresh reasons to watch classic films like Jaws.

In the era of explainer videos for every subject and stylized true-crime reenactments on a hundred channels, the only real difference here is slightly better production values. ... Slim but mostly engaging docuseries.

Voir, intentionally, isn’t trying to do exclusively one single thing; episodes are all over the place in terms of focus, form and quality, though it’s less a movie version of ESPN’s 30 for 30 franchise than a half-dozen slightly elongated versions of a Chuck Workman Oscar montage.

Although “Voir” as a whole is ultimately worth a look, “Profane and Profound” is ultimately the keeper of the bunch and if another series of episodes comes along, here's hoping that future contributors will look towards it as an inspiration for their own efforts.

From this sampler, “Voir” comes across as a bit of a discombobulated collection that should be considered on a case-by-case basis rather than as a cohesive, or even aesthetically comparable, whole.
