This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Poor season, the mystery was terrible, very sloppy and a cruel lack of time for other important original characters. Veronica has regressed and is a bad friend and girlfriend, her soft core, she used to be a marshmallow, barely shown all through the season. The last 10 minutes are awful. The death of one of the most beloved characters of the show, who has the best story arc is extremely badly handled, it's soapy and cheesy. Such a disservice to an amazing character and just to traumatize even more the heroine. Season 4 of Veronica Mars was a huge letdown. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely adored this show for 15 years and cried happy tears when the revival was announced last year even though there was always that nagging feeling what Rob would do. And now I know, he would do the absolutely worst and I wish we never would have gotten a revival. He not only killed my favourite character of all time and the male lead of the show, no, he did it in an absolute senseless and cruel way without giving us or Veronica time to grieve. He would have deserved a heroic and meaningful death but instead we're expected to immediately move on. Logan was the heart of the show, the character with the most growth, the most interesting character and the only one who challenged Veronica. He turned into a role model for a lot of people. Logan and Jason's portrayal of him was the best thing about this season.
But nonetheless I could have accepted his death, if it had been handled a lot better. If Rob had given his death any meaning. But he didn't. There was still so much left to be told with Logan and with L/V. Being married isn't the end, it's a beginning. There was no need in killing of Logan.
To add insult to injury, the reasoning behind this decision is infuriating. Women don't need trauma to be interesting and women certainly can have a boyfriend/husband AND a career. I would have loved to see Veronica grow and handling her trauma in therapy, but no, apparently that is boring and she "needs to be the underdog" (losing her husband doesn't make her a underdog, Rob!). Actually facing one's problems is badass, not some trauma for the sake of trauma. Furthermore, Rob regressed Veronica to a shell of herself this season and we never get any reasoning behind it. She seemed way softer and more willing to open up in the movie and in the books. What happened? Yes, she's probably depressed but we never get why or if there is no "why" when at least have one of her close-ones mentioning her unhappiness besides Logan.
But instead we get a cruel, racist, drug & alcohol abusing and spiteful Veronica who mocks her 5-year-partner for trying to better himself by going to therapy and manipulates him into losing control. The Veronica I've known would have encouraged his wish of self-improvement.
The Veronica I've known would have loved the baby of her best friend or at least wouldn't have been dismissive of him.
To add to this, Kristen was amazing in S1-S3 portraying Veronica but in S4 she mostly seemed to be phoning it in. Sadly the whole season was bad. The mystery was weak and people who know Rob could have already guessed it just by seeing the cast list (also he gave it away in one of the first episodes), Wallace and Weevil were demoted to window dressing and Rob AGAIN turned a female on this show into a rape survivor. Apparently he can't write a story without rape. Rob always says he doesn't want to do "teen drama" or "soap opera" anymore but he is the one who constantly goes for love triangles nobody wants and he ended this season in the most soap opera-y way.
We certainly didn't want Leo and I certainly don't want her to end up with Leo as Rob already hinted at. On top of that, Rob used and purposefully misled the show's fanbase by relying heavy on LoVe promo, only to turn it around at the end of the season and in his interviews. He planned on killing Logan since 2014 (after the movie the fans funded), probably even earlier. But of course he wasn't upfront about it because he needed the money and the support of the shippers who kept this fandom alive, who did the legwork for him, who asked for more seasons, who organized rewatches, wrote fanfic, etc.
It's save to say that without the kickstarter campaign, Rob never would have gotten a revival, but as soon as he thinks he doesn't need the fans anymore, he walks all over them. All for Rob's weird vision of Veronica being a P.I. on the road. That's not the Veronica I want and certainly not the reason why I loved the show. I watched for the characters and their relationships. Without them, the show lost everything special and is dead to me. If he wanted to create a new show, he should have been honest and not used this fanbase that has been nothing but loyal up to this point. Loyalty can be lost. I don't like being used and betrayed. This show always gave me a lot of comfort and strength over the years and was utterly important to me but now it is forever tainted and I'm afraid I'll never get that back and that might be the worst thing about this revival.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The thing VM had going for it was its quirkiness, humor, and underlying hope for a happy ending for Veronica. She struggled and often made decisions that seemed out of character - or is that what made her character? - that were frustrating, but the viewer could suspend disbelief because the premise of the show is pretty unbelievable. The movie and 2019 season are supposed to show a maturing Veronica and are heavy on the relationships created in the first two seasons. In the most recent series, the only maturing Veronica has undergone is her use of profanity and sex life. The show was losing me long before the tragic ending that could have been written differently but still provide her room for real growth. Are they leaving it open for her to find new love in future series? The mysteries have only been 40% of the draw to the show. The relationships and especially Logan’s role in Veronica’s life is what hooked viewers. The fourth season was a disappointing gift to the Marshmallows who have been around since season 1. seems to have undergone is her Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So disappointing. I loved the first season of Veronica Mars (arguably the strongest) and it used to be my favorite tv show. Season 4, however, took a huge u-turn in terms of character development and, quite frankly, it didn’t make sense or fit. All the things I loved about the series were gone. I wish they hadn’t even bothered with a revival and left my favorite show alone. Expand

If you’re not stuck in the high school days of Veronica Mars then you’ll absolutely love season 4. It takes huge risk and growth to show you Veronica isn’t a marshmallow anymore. Can’t wait to see how the capitalize on it in season 5!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite the polarising twist in the final episode of the new season, season 4 was a breath of fresh air. It recaptured the spirit of the earlier seasons, and updated the show to account for the passage of time in the main character's life. If Rob Thomas and the cast and crew can make a fifth season even half as good as this one, I can't wait to view it. Expand

While lifted by excellent performances by a talented cast, the show struggles at times to organically work the same group of characters into a new murder mystery every season, and it is perhaps too reliant on soap-opera storylines which are discarded almost as quickly as they are generated. As a mystery show it rarely succeeds beyond the first season, but as a drama it is quite enjoyable throughout, and if one is willing to suspend disbelief and overlook the occasional plot hole, Veronica Mars is well-worth a binge, consistently delivering suspense, drama and entertainment. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you wanted seasons 1-3 (and movie) of a show called Veronica Mars from 2004, this is a different show. While the actors and character names are the same, this is a completely different show. If you enjoyed seasons 1-3, you may not enjoy season 4. I was disappointed in the direction of the main character and would not want to see more seasons of a mediocre and irresponsible detective.

They should've just made a new show.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite a number of concerns*, overall I enjoyed Season 4. However, Rob Thomas definitely blew it with its bomb of a finale. As numerous critics have pointed out, my dramatic demise was heartless, cruel, and totally uncalled for. And as things stand, it looks like killing me off has killed the entire series. Far more tragic than noir, the blast was a horrible ending for an otherwise wonderful series that deserved so, so much better. Like thousands of vocal Marshmallows have expressed, I too cannot bare to watch it ever again. [* V's nightclub partying and drugging was not something the V we know would do.
* The V we loved would never play with guns while high
* The V we loved would have been much more concerned and attentive to her father
* Especially having studied psychology, the V we love would not have made fun of Logan getting therapy
* The V we know and love would never have blown Weevil off like that, after all that he had done for her over the years.]

Frankly, at this point, I'd rather see a show starring any of the other characters than Bell in this strictly mystery show Rob has described.

Having seen her talk about my death, my feelings have changed about Kristen Bell as well. If she's really onboard with fridging Veronica's soulmate, she doesn't truly get the heart and soul of the show either.

I find myself writing in the past tense because I'm afraid that when you killed me, you killed all of Veronica Mars. I hope you prove me wrong, Rob, and that you rethink and decide to bring me back alive for a Season 5.

It's doable, and without a shadow of a doubt, it would be sensational. It would be epic. --LE
