Flat characters, lazy writing, and terrible pacing make this a total waste of a solid premise. Greg Daniels has made some great shows - this isn't one of them.

There are a handful of visual gags in each episode, but only a couple good jokes in the whole season. The characters are cartoonishly simple, with no depth at all, and the decisions they make are often nonsensical - just hamfistedly pushing the story along.

There's some light sci-fi appeal in the potential bugs that might come with a virtual afterlife, but it's a grab-bag of random ideas that don't fit together as a logical whole. If you've ever seen an episode of Black Mirror and thought, "I don't get it", this might be more your speed.

Oh and there's a clumsy murder-mystery that never gets resolved, a handful of hamfisted sermons about the evils of class stratification, and a super-funny-so-hilarious episode-long joke about how skinny jeans are soooooo tight.

I don't understand how this show got on the air, much less how it's so highly rated.

A go-nowhere knockoff of The Good Place with a sci-fi VR twist. Pilot was passable but just went downhill after that with a serious lack of tone, humor or direction. Avoid.

I'm a little late to the party with this one but it was surprisingly fun show with a much darker season arc then the light air the show presents on the service.

Great show all around but some of the characters are caricatures with extreme jumps in logic when next to the grounded characters. Makes for a jarring watch sometimes.

Much of the early enjoyment in this series is seeing the cool future features, especially when he gets to the special resort where things can be adjusted with a swipe of the hand. Since it's created and written by Greg Daniels (best known for his work on The Office and Parks and Recreation), the series is billed as a comedy. However, it starts to lose the humorous aspects as his relationship with his still-alive customer service rep (Andy Allo) starts to blossom. Sure, their story is sweet, but it's ever-growing focus takes away from the show's comic momentum (plus a whodunit aspect adds a mystery angle). The episodes move with a brisk pace and the cast is amiable, but the sci-fi fun is often diluted by the developing romance. It also ends with an obvious 2nd season cliffhanger. Expand

Binged the entire season with three other people and the consensus was very positive. Engaging series to say the least, came of as part Her(the movie) part Black Mirror episode and a little Good Place-ish. One criticism may be that it could have packed a few more laughs, but this was still a very good series. Some of the flat out dumping on this show by a few of the critics is real puzzling. Well worth the watch and looking forward to Season 2. Expand

This is one of those shows. Like his previous work, the genius behind P&R and The Office brings us characters that seem real enough to reach out and touch but who still exist in a different world, even though much like our own. There is a bit of a boundary much like is exemplified through the premise of Upload.

An amazing story begins in the first few episodes with fascinating glimpses of a world built on technology that never really settles on it’s true intentions; being neither malevolent or benevolent. It is truly technology, up to the interpretation of the user.

With a cold script of code always making sure it’s citizens are happy, there is always a haunting falseness to it all. It engages as the viewer realizes, stirring feelings that we are all too familiar with in our current half digital/half IRL current existence, that what we think and feel are strings to be pulled by the right piece of code or even good screenwriting. Do we ever have control of what we imagine to be our own enjoyment? The attraction between Nathan and Nora feels even more real based on this juxtaposition. What is love if you exist without a heart? Is a soul something that exists within a body or is it within the heart of a person? Is the old fashioned notion of really knowing someone possible in a society that exhorts the cheapness of UberEats-style sex on demand?

Definitely not a show for anyone under the age of even 25. The philosophical questions alone are wasted on anyone less mature. The acting while dry and one-dimensional for some characters, is well played and enjoyably so in others like our mains. The recurring characters add garnish without being cloying or like overly added MSG. The imagery is top notch and the concepts are well thought out and believable “most of the time”. In some scenes the ‘angels’ have to move in a certain way to make their avatars move in the Afterlife yet in some scenes the avatar is walking around, laying down, etc while the CSR is sitting in their chair. but that is a small continuity error that can be waived away but just allowing your logic to be suspended for the enjoyment of just watching a well written storyline.

I found myself moved by the characters and concerned for their outcomes and wellbeing. Consider this viewer along for the ride until the very end.

Just please don’t allow this to become another Man In The High Castle.
Every episode was yet another new character and a new plot line that spun it off in so many directions that I stopped caring for any of them.

The acting and chemistry is, and I don't want to gush here, really good all around. Owen Daniels. Just thinking of the work that man must have had to do to nail that role of AI makes me want to have a KitKat, cup of tea and a little sit down. There's lots of plot holes and bits where you go "You can download a consciousness to a AI world that's similar to real life but can't develop an android?" Or "Hey, if there are all these weird company mashups in the future (Baskin Robbins Intel etc) why is Amazon not mentioned other than seeing a few delivery boxes? What happened, Jeff? Did you slap Ronald MacDonald for calling you GI Jane and so now no one wants to merge with you? Leaving you to, just deliver boxes". But, you know? I didn't care and gave this 10 anyway. Because it is a great bit of entertainment. Part mystery, part drama, part romance and heaps of chuckles. I hope that this gets a third season.
And that was just a joke Jeff. We're cool, right? You know, I'm really waiting on this vintage Action Man and it's been kind of a long time want of mine and I'm sure that it will get here without delay. That hat suited you.

But nothing about it works, except the bellboy assistant ai...sometimes. This whole show feels like a bad hallmark movie meets a bad Sci fi Network original. Everything feels cheap, especially the script...and the acting and directing. Few of the endless gags and "jokes" are even marginally funny. And never clever. Which is bizarre given the fantastic possibilities of this premise. The characters and plot points are so incredibly poorly written and ill conceived, and things are forced endlessly in order to ensure that great plot points occur that are never earned.

Also, it borrows its intros from Silicon Valley--a far superior show. It also is reminiscent at times of MANIAC on Netflix, which is a clearly superior show as well by lightyears.

Nothing in this show works. The only reason you might watch it is the premise and the hope that it might get better one day. But it NEVER does. It will let you down in most every way.
