It is fascinating and should appeal to sports lovers, as well as those who would have preferred to stare at a blank screen than watch any of the Olympics. ... Gripping. ... Some of its more famous stories may not quite be untold, but they are reframed – and with great skill.

Like the best of ESPN’s “30 for 30” docs, the “Untold” series is framed in the world of sports but goes far beyond that to tell the stories of some greatly talented and widely celebrated athletes who are also as flawed and vulnerable as the rest of us.

“Untold” finds its groove when it opens up that scope just a touch wider.

All range from good to great. Of course, there are slight variations in quality, and some of them pull back from issues that I wish they would have investigated further, but all five are worth a look, especially in light of the recent conversations being had around the world around mental well-being and athletics. The timing really couldn’t be better for an engaging, conversation-enhancing series that further reveals that what we think we know about sports is only part of the story.
