    “Undone” continues to approach the concept of trauma as an inherited trait with care and precision. On a technical level, the show is still an absolute marvel. ... Just when it felt like “Undone” could not top its first season, its second has it firing on all cylinders. It is a tragic but poignant story of how to live with past guilts, pains, and scars from generation to generation.

    What she discovers is the roots of another eight episodes that take the series’ premise and further makes good on its infinite promise. It’s a new path that transfers attention from a handful of characters from the first season in favor of zeroing in even more on the greater Winograd-Diaz tapestry, including Becca and Alma’s mother Camila (Constance Marie).

    Big ideas here. Profound at times. But they’re encased in an oddly buoyant and funny context that also manages to be substantial and emotionally resonant. Salazar and Odenkirk are in tonal concert within the trippy setting and concept, finding comedy and affection in the material and making it seem effortless. ... To not continue watching Undone would be foolhardy.

    This new season continues doing what Undone does best, beautifully weaving stories of different cultures together, painting an interesting landscape of healing trauma in a variety of backgrounds and circumstances. While the narrative’s driving force may feel a bit different, the characters we know and love are evolving, demanding a different kind of story, and effectively offering a more nuanced look at the conversation around how we heal.

    The series has lost the air of uncertainty in favor of depicting lives whose problems are implausibly neat and solvable. It’s a journey for definite solutions that feels less like the messy, disorienting process of being alive than playing a video game while reading the strategy guide.

    Finally it's back! I had previously been anxious about the second season given how satisfying the ambiguity of the first season had been butFinally it's back! I had previously been anxious about the second season given how satisfying the ambiguity of the first season had been but they proved me wrong! This season is a heavy exploration of a topic seemingly surfacing in the entertainment industry, one that confronts the ramifications of generational trauma. Beginning on an unsure dare say confusing first few episodes it's less immediate than the first but once it finds it's groove the story shoots into overdrive delivering a complex tale of lies,death,denial and miscommunication. It is convoluted at times and the thrill of "wtf" is minimized into digest able coherent plot lines.     So, I watched season 2, I now know that you have to watch all the episodes of both seasons to fully appreciate the show. This happensSo, I watched season 2, I now know that you have to watch all the episodes of both seasons to fully appreciate the show. This happens sometimes. You can watch the first few episodes of a series and not particularly like what you experienced - but, if you watch the entire series you gain a complete appreciation of it.

    I think this is why professional reviews often seem so incompetent. The professional reviewer gets the first episode or perhaps the first 3 episodes in advance and then writes a review without understanding what they are writing about.

    This is my original review written in 2019 after season 1:

    I watched "Undone" because Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad lawyer) had a major role in the series and I really like his acting. But, almost all of the acting was very good - and Odenkirk was just one good actor among many in the series. In fact, Rosa Salazar who starred in this series makes this something I would recommend everyone should consider watching.

    I think people will enjoy this series more if their expectations are framed by knowing in advance that the overall plot of the series is not the real driver for why this is such a good series.

    So, for example, when the main character Alma goes into a rant about the Alamo - it's better to understand that it is not something that is somehow a driver of an overall plot. It's just a development of better understanding of a character in a very enjoyable and introspective way.

    So I know most people get upset if a story does not have a strong plot driven element. Just note that there are a lot of people who enjoyed this series. So, my recommendation is try to appreciate the character development and acting in this series because it is really quite good.    … Full Review »
