So much potential, but it is wasted.

Some parts are cool, but i'm usually left feeling angry and confused by the characters motivation. "Why did that character kill that person?" I would ask my self only to realize it was put in to be edgy. "Why would a character say something like that?" I would ask myself only to realize it again is to be EDGY.

What's with DC being so broody lately?
They mixed up Grayson and Todd. Dick Grayson did leave Wayne manner eventually, very true, in order to pursue his own ambitions in crime fighting and was one of the founding members of the Titans. Jason Todd was a psychopath that eventually became the red hood.
They got Raven wrong, putting her in some Christian home. They almost portray Starfire

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So i am about half in the show and i have a big list of complains. But, lets start with the things i liked:
-I thought the character development was done pretty good
-The acting was overall good, there were some bad lines but i don't think that was the fault of the actors

Now to the stuff i DIDN'T like:
-The story is pretty predictable and not something new
-The writers clearly have never picked up a comic book and only saw The Dark Knight and The Punisher because Robin is a **** killer in this serie, and his excuse for being a killer is that Batman made him one... BATMAN. DOES. NOT. KILL. PEOPLE.
-The writing overall is pretty bad, lines are corny, reactions are not very logical and characters behaviour is inconsistent during the entire serie.
-The CGI is horrible. I don't expect TV series to have great CGI but this was VERY bad. It felt like they ran out of time and had to make in in 20 minutes.
-There a lot of dumb **** in the series. Let me give you an example (SPOILER WARNING): In ep 3 we see Rachell going to a monastery. There see meets this sister who tells her stuff (not important). Later on we see Rachel have an oubreak of that darkness inside her. This ONLY happens thru the entire series when she gets EMOTIONAL. So the sister decides to LOCK HER UP for her safety. She snaps and blows up the monastery. She just locks her up without thinking even twice about how her powers trigger.

Quick recap: The show is badly writen, they don't understand how the characters work, the acting is fine but it's not enough to make this serie good for more then a couple moments.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've watched the whole season: 'pathetic' is the word I'd use.

The last episode was obviously the best because it focuses mainly on Grayson's relationship with Batman, which was the only interesting thing of the entire show.

It's boring, painfully long, nonsensical, irrelevant, over the top... All that build-up to have a tiny glimpse of Batman at the end... Oh wait actually no, it was an hallucination... So what's the point?
It's always the same thing on every episode, the same f*cking existential questions over and over again...

The structure is weak; why in the hell the scene about Hawk confessing he's been raped was cut off ??! The camera directly skips this sequence of the scene to bring us back in the same scene when he's just done talking? Are you kidding me??

I couldn't count the numerous flashbacks sequences. "15 years ago, 4 years ago, 2 days ago, 5 months ago, 2 years ago, 2 weeks ago..." like wtf is it going to stop turning around and get to the effin point??

The only good time I had while watching this show was seeing Dawn naked - - Oh speaking about it, how in the universe does someone can have passionate sex right after killing his rapist? Although Dawn was hot, I just can't figure out yet.

The story is pretty weak from start to finish, I have seen Darker stuff in cartoons, simply because everything is so overly melodramatic you can't take anything seriously, from the Space Hooker to the goth emo girl to a violent version of Robin and a bad cg beastboy everything in this screams: this is an edgy 12 year olds fanfic that somehow got a budget.

Raven is awesome, but I'm biased as she's one of my favourite DC characters.

The stars of the show are really doing their best.

    Bad points:

The storyline is so dragged out it feels like a slog. The final episode could have been done in a paragraph, its almost entirely just filler and stupid filler at that.

By now you'll know that the series is much darker than most hero series, its not just dark it's pitch black. Now if you take the punisher for example it fits this kinda feel because it's the punisher and that's what he does. Robin does not kill people, he just doesn't, it's one of the core things about him and batman. To remove that means they have in effect created an anti-hero who doesn't fit anywhere and it just doesn't feel right.

Frankly its not fun to watch. Back to the punisher, I'm ok with how dark it was because it fits how castle feels. He's on a mission to get revenge while carrying a soul filled with grief, he's not going to be cheery, and nobody expects it. But you want to follow him because you feel like he's got the (kinda) moral high ground.
The titans on the other hand have always had some humor, its not always dark and dismal with them and it's been forced that way and for the life of me I don't know why. I honestly don't care what happens to robin because as far as I can see he is a murdering psychopath with all the morallity of an ally cat.

So many moments where you think WTF are they doing.

What on earth made them dress Starfire like that?

The whole series storyline could fit on a pamphlet, now that's fine if the rest is spent developing the characters, but it's not really. There is some but I watched the whole series over 3 days, I finished it 10 mins ago and I'm struggling to name a part where I went 'oh that's interesting'

    Summary:

    Not for kids
If you looking for fun this isn't it
The writer's seem confused and from reading other reviews so are the audience.

At the moment the series is like a very drunk friend. From what you can see there is glimmers of the awesomeness you know. But at the moment it's trying to punch you and has been sick on your shoes. Let's see if it can sober up for series 2.

A few decent spurts during the season is the reason the show has not failed completely for me, BUT I am VERY confused with who the target demo is considering the writing of the show.

TL;DR I will still be able to stomach the same actors if the series continues but please bring some better writing to the show. Or just watch Young Justice instead to get a good fix for young superheroes teaming up... Season 3 is almost finished and previous 2 seasons are spectacularly handled.

It's not for fans like me that is for sure, maybe designed at attracting the fans that were lost from the whiplash inducing 180 turn that the DCEU made trying to please masses, scratch that, even the DCEU didn't have such dreary writing. At least Snyder's eye for visuals make the poorly written DCEU watchable.

Regardless who the target demo is I feel the actors are doing their passionate best as much as they can. That is in the face of the dumb outdated in the 90s angst filled vibe, poor color grading, seizure inducing editing choices and general broody tonality.
The stilted, eye rolling dialogue adds to the cherry of 'Bad Writing' and is the main cause for this disaster. Who is writing the dialogue and do they not understand that it is the most important part for a superhero genre?

I scratch my head to understand when did colorfully illustrated characters, with nothing else but good dialogue writing in the comic book medium were translated into these stupid EMO outdated personalities, the characters are just cliches, and just about every cliche u can think of probably happens in the course of the episodes. It is fcking Heartbreaking.
IT is very baffling that with the countless animated shows already available for the subject matter why the writers and directors felt this 90's Ben Affleck Daredevil Vibe was required.

But at the state that this show is in I could not recommend fans of the Teen Titans or new comers to the franchise since it is a very stilted view of some genuinely good and heartfelt, serious yet heart warming subject material.

There's no Cyborg. Beast Boy can only turn into a tiger and has to take his cloths off first. Raven's darkness comes from her nose and mouth and looks really stupid because of it.

Of course anyone trying to give Robin gravitas is very confused.

Fairuza Balk plays Raven as well as she has played this character before and actually manages to upstage most of the rest of the cast. Ironically, she is one of the bright spots of this series.

Starfire, is played stiffly by RuPaul and honestly I'm just waiting for the actress to do something worth commenting on.

Hiro Hamada is Beast (singular) Boy. I keep wanting him to be Greg Cipes, but there is potential given time.

Blood. Lots of blood. Poorly filmed fight scenes. Lots of brooding. Many MANY liberties taken.

So why an 8? To enjoy this you must forget everything you know about DC's properties or these characters. Just ride the addictive crazy train that it is. It's a bit like Gotham that way.

I'm still not sure why DC thinks they need everything dark and gritty. My best memories of their material has always been the bright and happy. (SEE: Teen Titans Go To The Movies)

Dark, gritty and violent. Definitely not for kids. And symptomatic of all that's wrong with the DC forays into live action. Let's start with the main issue that I have with this, i.e. Starfire. while everyone looks about the right age to keep within the boundaries of the Teen Titans history, albeit without the teen, Starfire looks way too old to be in this role. While Dick looks about right for someone in his early 20s to be leading the team (someone with a little bit more experience than a kid), Starfire looks about right to be the mum who's waiting for everyone at home....in her $5 hooker outfits. I'm at a total loss as to why the show cannot dress her in something else without making her look like she should be standing on a street corner.

Raven, completely one dimensional. Her main role seems to be to act sad, scared and angry. That's it. Beast Boy seemed to be the only one who had the potential to shine and then...nothing. DC decided to just plop him in a corner and showcase someone with cool green hair instead. Robin who now seems to be super violent (think DC's answer to Frank Castle) and so dark I'm constantly wondering why he doesn't just put on the Bat outfit instead.

There also doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to each episode either. Hawk & Dove - why ? Absolutely no connection to the anchor story or any reason for them to be in that episode. Doom Patrol - why ? The throwaway attempt to provide some backdrop to Beast Boy could have been done in one sentence instead of an entire episode. Both these episodes did absolutely nothing except to say "Hey, DC also has some other cool characters".

The way this series is going, is typical of DC's arrogance in just about every attempt they have made into live action, i.e. "You will take it and by god you will like it !" Except, as the latest disaster of the crew leaving Justice League has shown, actually DC, no, we don't have to like it. Heck even your own people don't like it.

You will not be dissapointed, just be patient and see all episodes. The so called problems are 3, from what I've seen, for the frustrated fans. They are unfounded and really absurd if you ask me. (1) The Starfire casting criticism is nothing more than pure racism, Diop is tremendous in her acting like all the cast, plus the fact that Starfire IS of color ALSO IN THE COMICS, just that she has more of an orange-brown skin color (like she had on Teen Titans), and I know that you all loved, like I have, that version, but that doesn't mean it's a disaster for the show that this version has one shade darker skin, as you critics fanatically keep saying. IT IS ,AFTER ALL, A DIFFERENT VERSION of the character, as all characters are, that's why the show is called in the first place TITANS AND NOT Teen Titans. Don't be rigid, narrow minded, and much less so racist, folks. (2) The costumes are lame phrase is totally absurd to support, the hero costumes are as they are, as they were made SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS SERIES. Here the critis again complained about Starfire's easy woman outfit, but damn, it's only the 1st season so far ant there is so much time for improvement. The outfit, and general appearance, she had was, again, SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS FIRST and as early as can be season that had it's own specific CONTEXT AND CIRCUMSTANCES. The suits were very good, really, and let's say they maybe you still think they were lame, BUT ARE the suits of Marvel's hero series better IN COMPARISON ?? Really don't think so, such an affirmation, that they are, IS WHAT CAN BE CALLED LAME. (3) The fact that Cyborg is not included in the Titans team is the last ignorant claim by the critics. The series is presenting in the 1st season precisely that the team is getting step by step formed as the heroes get together, WITH CYBORG BEING by Doom Patrol's side IN THAT CONTEXT AND CIRCUMSTANCE. AGAIN, it doesn't mean that in the cartoon series (and comics) he was from the start with the Titans, that now it had to be the same, with no new perspective, being another version of the hero, with a very different take on him. Not to mention that, on the contrary, it's more interesting to see his hero origin, character development and evolution in time. HE, MORE THAN PROBABLY, WILL JOIN the TItans in the future, sometime in the upcoming seasons, and quit the Doom Patrol. So that wraps it up. TITANS IS GREAT ! TITANS MADE TEEN TITANS GREAT AGAIN !! The acting was outstanding especially from Anna Diop, Brenton Thwaites, Melody Johnson, Seamus Dever, Ryan Potter, Teagan Croft, Rachel Nichols, Alan Ritchson, and Minka Kelly. The chemistry between the cast is phenomenal especially between the main four; Brenton Thwaites, Teagan Croft, Anna Diop, and Ryan Potter. The writing was good but kind of all over the place and confusing at times specifically the story. The main title design is awesome, love the music. The music is fantastic. The costumes were excellent especially ones wore by Anna Diop, Ryan Potter, Teagan Croft, Conor Leslie, Minka Kelly, Brenton Thwaites, and Alan Ritchson. The makeup and hairstyling was excellent especially on Anna Diop and Ryan Potter but some of the wigs were not the best like ones wore by Teagan Croft and Minka Kelly. The fight choreography was pretty great but sometimes didn't look totally real. The visual effects were ok but not the best, Kory's powers looked pretty good but Trigon and Gar as a tiger were not that great looking and Rachel's powers looked ok. "Titans: Season 1" is a very enjoyable series for fans of comics and Teen Titans, but that doesn't take away the mistakes that the series has, such as a narrative that sometimes becomes stupid, a script that goes around a lot and some dialogues that become ridiculous.

Despite this, the series is interesting, it keeps you glued to the screen and I find interesting the most of the characters.

PROS: engaging main characters with great interactions between them; good music and visual effects. CONS: gratuitous violence; the main characters spend very little time together; unsatisfying season story arc resolution; uninteresting secondary characters; it takes itself too seriously for a fantasy story with super-powered characters dressed in costumes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I began watching this show as my plan of watching every single superhero show on Netflix, and this was the one I started with. And it was good enough to make me carry on with it.

The starting of the show was brilliant. I finally got to see the origin stories of all the characters of the cartoon I used to watch as a kid. And today all of it started to make sense. I do have a problem with the fact that their age difference looks too drastic, and Starfire and Beast Boy look nothing like the cartoon, but I chose to ignore those details. I was more interested in seeing the action. But the action soon finishes and focuses more on the character development. Initially I was a bit pissed, especially at the part where Dick burns his suit. But later I start taking interest in how their lives start playing out in their conflicts.

Every character in this show is likeable, whether it's a staple character like Raven or a complete newcomer like Superboy. After all, this show, unlike most other gritty superhero shows made nowadays, is driven more by character development than action. And this is one place this show absolutely nails.

Titans is a superhero hybrid -- a live-action series that essentially weds the CW's DC Comics-inspired fare with the gritty, premium-cable approach of Marvel's Netflix dramas. That's not a bad formula, and it yields an entertaining, heavily serialized show.

But you’d better back it up with more than what Titans has to offer, or you just seem like a frustrated poseur who wants to seem much tougher and cooler than you can ever hope to be.
