[Crime novelist Michael Connelly's] no-nonsense approach on this four-parter makes for a compelling view of an investigation and a crime that still lives in the shadows of the Hollywood sign.

What Mr. Connelly is not is an electrifying tour guide through a saga that is ultimately atrocious, labyrinthine, rife with corruption, celebrities and lowlifes, but feels longer and more languorous than it ought to have been. .... The entire enterprise gives one the sense that the interviews were all off the cuff, the editing equally casual. And while none of this makes “Wonderland” less than appalling, it has an urgency similar to that of the four-decade investigation.
