I have never really played the games much so I don't know a lot of about the games, perhaps that was a good thing. I don't know. What I do know is that while Henry Cavill did a good job of acting, it's not enough to save the entire show. The first season was more rugged and raw. There were lots of silly names and exotic places, but the monsters were more prevalent and the action more intense. Season Two obviously had a bigger budget: The dramatic locales, exotic costumes and CGI effects are all greatly improved. However, the story is more disjointed with multiple locations, time periods and storylines to make matters more complex. There’s also too much expository dialogue and needless discussion that interrupts the flow of action and adventure. Still, it's one of the better current fantasy series. (First season of 8 episodes was released in 2019 and 2nd season episodes is playing with a 3rd season announced. )… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Those racists here should really get their head out of their arse.First of all the story plays in a fantasy world. It's not medieval eastern Europe. It's not even remotely like medieval eastern Europe so the idea that everybody should be white is pure racist preconception. Second of all if you are so obsessively preoccupied with the color of people's skin that says more about you than about the series. Seriously, get help.
The series has strong points and weak points.
Strong:The hack & slash scenes are second to none. Brilliant sword play and buckets of blood.The sex scenes could be a bit more explicit.I mean if you are going to do it, do it right like GOT in the beginning.Still i'm glad they didn't sanitize it. And the world is beautifully created, both dark and gritty as well as clean and elegant.
Weak points: It is written for the Witcher die hard fan base.The characters including Geralt himself aren't properly introduced.Presumably because the writers are fans themselves and they know all these characters. I myself have played the first pc game and part of the second.But to me a lot of the characters are rather flat and it's not always clear why they do what they do.The main story line is hard to follow to be honest after one season I'm still not sure where it is all going. And the fact that they don't tell the story chronologically doesn't help.At a certain point you can watch for half an hour and not be quite sure where in the time line they are.And then there is this war and Nilfgaard are the bad guys I suppose. But why what and who they are, I don't know.Actually the only character that is properly introduced is Renfri and she's killed of by Geralt in the first episode.If it had been the other way around the series might have become a lot more interesting.
All in all it is an entertaining show, but they do need to work on their story telling and character development if they want to move from a cult fan show to GOT appeal.I would give it a 6.5. It is not terrible but it needs work.… Expand

Quite good. Follows the short stories from the first took books and takes liberties with some of their storylines. Some acting is subpar, some acting quite good. I think that nothing surprised me when watched it. In fact the witcher @netflix is a such great thing for people that read the books, nothing more.

Season 1 review: Im a huge fan of all things witcher so trust me when i say it's not terrible but sadly it's far from good. Though the cgi IS truly terrible at times, as are the shockingly cheap sets. All likley due to the weak direction and a total lack of quality control. Not sure who to blame but it's likely the show runner who has a track record of hit and miss projects. Sadly this is no game of thrones! It does get better as it goes along (but not by much) though it's just so much worse than the books or game or even the anime. The brand deserves so much better. The anime despite it's own problems really nails the feeling of what it is to be a witcher while this show doesn't have a clue. It's embarrassing at times how cheap and lazy the production is. I believe Henry has actually taken tips from fans for s2 because he had as much of a clue who Geralt was.. as the show runner. It's a real shame as the casting is excellent as is the source material. The show is technically based on the books but clearly the games as well even if its not officially acknowledged. The show is much like xena and hercules but not as fun. It's also inexplicably dumb at times but this might be due to the misuse of the giant budget. Also Its filmed in a weird disconnected order to its detriment as it confuses viewers. I believe this was the show runner attempting to make the missteps in production more interesting in editing. Maybe season 2 will be better now it's so popular. I Hope so. Worth a look but keep expectations low. Like really low...as there are equal good parts as there are clunky stinking ones :( Also if you do love the games go watch the nightmare of the wolf anime first. It's meant to help with season 2 but it's just so much truer to the brand than much of season 1. 6/10 Season 2 review: Google review doesn't discern between entire seasons lol so I've added 1 extra star. Season 2 is significantly better. The writing is still poor and the show runner is still mucking things up. The sex and nudity is long gone because the show runner thinks it covers up bad writing which it does but now we just have bad writing and excessive violence. Because the bodies we all share is far more offensive than cutting off people's limbs. The cgi is still far from perfect but it is alot better in that it's now acceptable to good rather than bad. The acting is still strong among the lead characters though minor ones struggle with the weak screenplay. Though the overall story is far more vague with far less actually happening and lots of names or places and people without much explanation. There are actual monsters now to fight so a real result and the action scenes are far more competent. Geralt is still as good as ever though he's a little more loving now. Yen is yen but with more clothes. Vesimir is quite good. The mages still scheme. Same old same old. The budget of ten plus million dollars doesnt feel like it's being spent well. There is still room for significant improvement. This is no game of thrones but atleast it's no longer Xena warrior princess. 8/10… Expand

As a fan of both the games and books, the Netflix adaptation was better than I expected. However it does have a number of issues that hold it back. Let's talk about the positives first. Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia is fantastic. He killsAs a fan of both the games and books, the Netflix adaptation was better than I expected. However it does have a number of issues that hold it back. Let's talk about the positives first. Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia is fantastic. He kills it with his performance as adeptly as Geralt could cleave a Nekker in two with his Silver Sword. His mannerisms and speech feel like he has been cloned from Witcher 3 voice actor Doug Cockle. Other standouts are Freya Allen as Ciri, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia De Vries who also voiced Anna Henrietta in the Witcher 3 Blood and Wine. But the real surprise came in the form of Joey Batey who plays the bard Jaskier (or Dandelion for those who are fans of the games). "Toss a Coin to your Witcher" is such a catchy tune and he plays the part perfectly.

Other casting choices I am less sold on. The choices of Fringilla Vigo and Triss Merigold I haven't been sold on yet. Hopefully my opinion changes in future seasons. The set design and in particular the monster design and visual effects are all well done. There are some truly spectacular monster designs here. More than I thought we would get. The downside is that some of the fight scene choreography while fast paced and action packed? There are moments that really push the suspension of disbelief. And yes I know Geralt is a mutant. But stabbing a guy in the leg I don't think would be quite enough to dispatch him if his adrenaline was pumping. Geralt handles the sword and has it behind his back at one point. Then there is the amount of twirling which leaves his back open. The armor of the Cintrans and Temerians looks fantastic. However what has been done to the nilfgaard armor is absurd. Narrative structure is a bit confusing. You jump between multiple characters at multiple points in time. It's not until about the 5th or 6th episode that these disparate timelines are brought together. They show you scenes you had already seen but from a different perspective adding new context. It's clever but can be a bit jarring to some. It eventually does make sense as you see new scenes inserted into these familiar snippets you have already seen. It's non linear storytelling and fortunately season 2 from the sounds of it will avoid this. It's certainly worth a watch for any fan of the series and I will say that a 2nd watch does add some greater context.… Expand

There is quite a bit of angst over the diversity casting, but it doesn't bother me. This isn't Eastern Europe. There is magic, and dragons. Get over yourselves. The problems are that the characters are pretty shallow, and most look downright bored to be there. Still, for fans of the games and this type of media, its worth a watch. I overall enjoyed it, but I totally understand why others don't like it (and its not because it has black people in it).… Expand

Every scene they appear in, the immersion is utterly broken and they stand out like sore thumbs. Really, a "brother" in a group of Slavic cutthroats, dressed in a European Serf outfit?

This is a clear example of the mind poison of English progressivism/inclusiveness ideology bringing down an otherwise great show for absolutely no good reason.… Expand

As someone who loves the game more than most in this world, the series so far is decent at best, I would say pretty bad, but it's not bad, just far-far from what it could be. Cavill was the only one who tried to keep the immersion while the rest of the cast obviously didn't care that much. It's not only the looks of the characters aside from Geralt. It's also the way they talk. Sometimes making metaphors and references which don't fit into the witcher world because they don't exist there. Here a little example from episode 2: Dandelion picks up the small stone Geralt got shot with from the Sylvan and compares it to a tiny cannonball. This should be actually impossible since firearms don't exist yet. There is already gunpowder called Zerrikanian Powder, but only Alchemists and Witcher actually use it.

The itself plot is chaotic, constantly jumping around and obviously extremly compressed to fit into 8 episodes. The battles often make no sense as both sides constantly forget how to fight. Like in the battle of the first episode where both side forgot that bows and spears exist. Also Cintra thinking that cavalry should be used like simple infanty.

The fight scenes with Cavill are really good, thats one of the things they actually managed to nail. Dandelion is just as annoying and loveable as in the games.

I don't blame people stopping watching after just 2 or 3 episodes. The first ones are really flawed. I'm not only talking about the forced diversity,the obvious budget cuts (that Sylvan especially) and the many small offputting details they got wrong.… Expand

Also many characters, like Yennefer, are just unlikeable, worse, you can't even understand why they behave, or seemingly have to behave, disgruntled 24/7. Also the worldbuilding lacks a lot, things like the women of the forest, Cintra, or even Nilfgaard are just loose terms that get tossed around very much, but aren't actually explained that well. I want this series to be good, and I hope season 2 (and the following ones) will be better, the potential is there.… Expand

The difference between this and GoT, for example, is that GoT feels more like it was made by people that have a grounded understanding of how the world really works, while this generally feels like nonsense fantasy made by dorks who've never really lived life outside their safe bubble. The Yenn actress was quite stunning, and I was generally not bored enough to stop watching, but I wouldn't tell people they should watch it, like I would for say GoT or Breaking Bad. The good news is I've beaten Witcher 3 and I think this show has nowhere to go but up. A couple more years of iteration, refinement, and listening to story feedback could go a long way. Verdict - If you like SyFy channel-like shows and are a fan of the series you might enjoy it, but I don't think the average person really will. Check it out in a couple more years.… Expand

This show just didn't capture me. I wanted to like it so bad, Mr Cavill is one of my favorite actors, but unfortunately this show will not go down as a highlight of his career. I appreciate his enthusiasm for the character and the video game, he brought Geralt to the screen in a very good an authentic way. But it just didn't work for me. Nevertheless, he is the only positive thing that I can think of about this show.

I don't know what's the production budget, but so many times the entire thing felt like a B-category, cheap production. Poorly written dialogues, not so great acting from the rest of the cast (I didn't care for any of the characters) and casting choices. The CGI was okay overall the sword fight scenes were great. The editing of the plot progress timelines was confusing sometimes, made me wonder what the heck is going on, unfortunately not in a good way.

I'm not sure if I give the second season a chance after this.… Expand

As a fan of the books and games, this is great. The casting, fight choreography, and cinematics are on par with Game of Thrones. -1 for a lot of timeline jumps, may be hard to follow for new people

It is not terrible nor great. Actors playing Dandelion, Qeen of Cintra, Tissaia de Vries and ( what suprised me ) Gerlat were realy good. Ciri also was quite good. Rest of actors were either bad or meh whatever. Yennefer and Triss were theIt is not terrible nor great. Actors playing Dandelion, Qeen of Cintra, Tissaia de Vries and ( what suprised me ) Gerlat were realy good. Ciri also was quite good. Rest of actors were either bad or meh whatever. Yennefer and Triss were the worst in my opinion as characters of great importance for Geralt, actresses playing those roles should be perfect match ... and they are not at all. Also forced diversity is a bit visible. Scenography is beautyful and diverse, big plus for me. Fight scenes are good for most part. Dialogs are hit or miss. Some will make you lough and seem natural and not forced and other will make you cringe for how shallow and badly written they are. It does not deserve 0 laike some people gave it but you can fell lost potential in this tv show. Also cgi dragons were terrible. Eng is not my native laguage and i cant even write in it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having read the books (and played the games) I wanted to love this show. Instead I came out thinking it was just ok. I understand that things need to be changed around and shuffled when a work is adapted for the screen. However I never understood the need for unnecessary changes. The changes only serves to lessen the impact they had in the books (Renfri, the Djinn and the Last Wish, etc.). It all felt rushed and scattered and one dimensional. I'm hoping season 2 will be better now that the 3 timelines have converged and they dont have to cram 3 separate backstories into 10 episodes. Check out The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny books. Es cierto que sufre de muchos clichés además de diálogos y situaciones bastante absurdas. Tampoco me ha gustado que en 8 episodios de una hora cada uno no se explique apenas nada sobre el pasado de Geralt. El cgi de algunas criaturas se nota bastante pobre. La decisión de contar la historia en dos líneas de tiempo diferentes a la vez no me termina de convencer. Al igual que la justificación barata del todopoderoso "destino" para excusar que a los protagonistas les salga todo bien. Pero yo no me quedo solo con eso.

Tiene una banda sonora increíble, solo con escuchar la intro ya se te eriza la piel. La elección de Henry Cavill para el personaje de Geralt, simplemente excelente, al igual que su actuación y caracterización. Y lo mejor de la serie, su mundo, criaturas, paisajes, personajes... te deja con ganas de ver y saber mas sobre este universo fantastico-medieval (después de ver la primera temporada de la serie me compré el primer juego). I was introduced to this world because of those amazing games more than a decade ago (still haven't played Witcher 3 yet, though, a mortal sin I know) and with the release of Season 2 coming up, I decided to finally give Season 1 a watch, especially since I started reading the books and finished The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny beforehand considering this season is mostly based on those two books. What I loved: Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. He was perfect. He had the feel and style of Geralt nailed down and since he is a fan of the games, he emulated the voice from them and it was awesome. He gave a great performance as the famous witcher. He looked the part too albeit a bit beefier version. Also, some of his fight scenes were brutally thrilling and well-choreographed. The song "Toss a Coin to your Witcher" from Jaskier/Dandelion was an absolute banger and Dan Vasc's Metal cover of it is even better. Still can't get it out of my head. What I liked: Joey Batey as Jaskier/Dandelion (I wish they called him dandelion in the series), he was a fun companion to The White Wolf and I enjoyed their interactions and his injection of comedy alongside Geralt's dry wit. Would have liked it more if the writing gave him more smarts alongside the comic relief aspect as it is in the books but who knows, maybe in the next season. Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, might not look the part that well but I sure did enjoy her performance, she had some intense moments in this season and she brought out her acting chops. Freya Allen as Ciri wasn't bad either and whatever shortcomings I felt had more to do with the writing and not the actress. Seeing some of the locations such as Cintra, some monsters such as The Kikimora and Striga, and some magic with good production values was entertaining. Also, some events which weren't elaborated on in the book being shown in the series was cool. The soundtrack was good and clearly had influence from the games although not at that level. What I didn't like/Hated: The way the story was structured, I wasn't a fan of it for a lot of it. Instead of taking their time with Geralt's short stories they were adapting from the books and introducing the viewer to the world and giving them proper breathing room by focusing earlier episodes on each story, they half-assed it in order to cram in other characters and plot elements that ran concurrently alongside the witcher stories in pretty much every episode and because of that, so much was cut or altered, some downright butchered (Sword of Destiny, for one). Also, some decisions made with the out-of-order timeline felt extremely misplaced basically giving you a spoiler first and then building up to it and I wasn't a fan of it.
The visuals were very inconsistent. Some episodes clearly had more budget than others. Elements such as the Brookilon Forest and Dryads or the dragon from the story The Bounds of Reason looked downright bad (and the adaptation of these stories equally sucked). Overall, I enjoyed it for some of the elements I mentioned above but I was certainly hoping for better adaptations of the stories, which is something I wish they'd remedy in Season 2. Now, would I have enjoyed this more if I had not read the books? Perhaps, but I can never know that for sure, I guess one gives up that factor when one has experienced the source first. Anyway, if you haven't watched it yet, I'd still recommend giving it a try regardless of whether you have played the games or read the books or are completely new to this fantasy world. If Netflix doesn't screw it up in the subsequent seasons, this could have the potential to be as big of a hit as Game of Thrones and the books are finished so there's that edge as well. And if I were to rate the first season, I'd give it a 6.5/10.… Expand

But I started to like some of those Aretuza characters (mainly just Fringilla) in season 2. I wish there were more episodes in a season to get more monster hunting/Geralt stuff. You have Henry Cavill who is perfect for the role. Don’t waste that. Give me more of season 2 episode 1 type of episodes.

Netflix will never give this show the budget it deserves because they have a formula that every show is going to follow, for max profitability. Netflix should never have taken on the Witcher if that was their plan for this.… Expand

The actors playing Yennefer and Geralt are the best, yet they cant really save this series from mediocrity, and even if they are good actors, they were still badly cast. Geralt simply doesnt look like He-Man, like this actor does.

The writing is bad, too. You feel as if youre dropped into a hot pot of stuff you have to know but dont know. Especially if youre not great with names this will confuse you a lot at the start.

You never get a feeling of epicness like in the games or books. It feels childish and cheap, best comparable to Hercules or Xena. Even though it uses a lot of nudity and gore. They think (judging from the sad music) that you feel for this or that character, that this or that character dies, yet you dont feel anything for them, because the series never establishes their character well and makes the dialogues very weird and awkward, unnatural. Its worse than on The Walking Dead. The story feels extremely rushed, as if they try to explain the whole Witcher universe in just a few hours. Maybe it should have had 24 episodes instead of just 8. But I guess thats just signs of the time. Characters and their personalities arent important anymore, because we live in a very anti-social time because people are mostly sitting at home, not having much social interaction anymore - and thats me saying, who isnt really the biggest social interactive person either.

The jokes are unfunny, mostly because you cant really build up a relationship to the characters because of the reasons I already mentioned.

People comparing this to Game of Thrones have obviously never watched Game of Thrones. I cried like a baby many times when people died in GoT or something bad happened to them. Here I dont even flinch.
Its like comparing a Lada to a Maybach.
I get that some people are starved for a fantasy series after the end of GoT, but this is in no way a substitute.

Oh yeah, and the excessive use of colored contact lenses (sometimes they wear them, sometimes they dont) also add to the childishness of this series. It looks completely unbelievable. Directors should know that in the age of 4K resolution.… Expand

The characters barely represent the original, in terms of visually (how they are described in detail in the book) as well as character wise. The plot deviates from the source material in absolutely MASSIVE ways, and not just in the "we have to translate it into a new format so have to change certain things" way, but rather changing and assassinating the absolute fundamental character traits and behaviors. And the plot just does not make any sense. The producer themselves stated they would rather create quick emotion fast-food because they believe the audience to be 0 attention-span ADHD tiktok teens who don't want any logical plot or character behaviour. The netflix show is the Witcher in name only. None of the plot, characters or characters are even remotely truthful. That being said, if one can watch this show while intoxicated and on a second monitor while browsing reddit or tiktok then it's not that bad. It's mostly well produced, so can still be entertaining if you pay no attention to anything. Some actors are really good (Henry Cavil is a phenomenal fit for Gerald, so is Jaskier and some others). The show is ruined by it's writing. It feels like the showrunner and writers just took a popular franchise and then immediately throw everything out the window to write their own story instead to feed their ego.

tldr; Can still be entertaining if brain is turned off. Terribly butchered if paying any attention - impossible to get immersed.… Expand

I was looking forward to loving this, and there were moments when I did. The show's writing flaws, however, stick out like a barbarian at a royal gala, and making it to the end of this surprisingly short season felt like a dungeon crawl of its own.

Henry Cavill's Geralt is the best thing about The Witcher, and he kept me going each time I wanted to stop (which was often). He's not a fan of pomp or pretense, and calls people out on their BS. He's got a dry wit that cuts deep and makes me grin. That black armor steals the scene every time. I'm not too familiar with Geralt's mythos, but this feels like great casting. Cavill brings a likability that, combined with good dialogue, a healthy dose of mystery, and some solid character development, results in a winning recipe.

And yet, the show puts up a pretty thick wall between the viewer and the world of The Witcher, and it's called Lore (tm).

References to creatures, races, kingdoms, laws, historical events, legends, and important people are constantly thrown around without much of an explanation to the viewer. Best case, this leaves the viewer feeling left out, like we're not "in" on the joke or reference. Worst case, the audience can't actually follow the story. I've seen the entire season and about 40% of it made sense to me.

Putting all that lore and history aside, the very moment-to-moment decisions characters make aren't explained well, either. Many decisions are not conveyed well, and I can't tell what the characters are thinking a lot of the time.

Magic is also completely glossed over in The Witcher. If there's any kind of rule system for it, it's never actually discussed. People who shouldn't have magical powers are always using them. People who are SUPPOSED to be wizards won't use magic at obvious moments. Apparently it's possible to RUN OUT of magic, somehow. What's this "chaos" we keep hearing about?

The second main character we're introduced to is Ciri, who's completely devoid of all backstory, desires, sense of humor, personal taste, philosophies, or actual character development. She likes to play this game with bones, and she seems reasonably fond of her Grand mom. That's all we get.

Ciri is simply used as a perpetual and token damsel in distress, getting bumped from one situation to another, and making very few of her own decisions along the way. I found myself WANTING bad things to happen to her, just so she'd build a little personality.

Because the show's plot wasn't quite confusing enough, the writers decided to toss in some out-of-sequence storytelling. The story jumps back and forth between various time periods without warning the viewer. Characters clearly die and then reappear in later episodes without explanation. The passage of time is inconsistent. It's impossible to tell whether it's meant to be a day later, a month later, many years later, or even some time in the past. It doesn't help that it's implied that some of the characters might be immortal. Or maybe they just age slowly. I'm not sure. I give up.

Rounding out our trinity of main characters is Yennefer, by far the most frustrating of the three.

First introduced in episode two, Yennefer's story starts out well, setting her up as the underdog in a long story of self-discovery, determination, and growth, that... oh, wait, it's over. We don't get to see her gradual transformation or feel like we're along for the journey. Instead, all we get is a super-quick origin story that barely makes sense and ends with nowhere left to go. As a result, she ends up spending most of her remaining five episodes acting like an arrogant, bored, immature, impulsive, reckless, power-mad diva. Are we sure she's supposed to be one of the good guys?

None of these issues, however, are the main, glaring problem with The Witcher. There's no plot.

None of our three leads are actually TRYING to do anything specific. There are no goals, motivations, passions, recurring antagonists, or big-picture achievements for them to accomplish. Geralt wanders aimlessly from town to town, getting involved in local monster fights and trying not to "care" about humans.

Ciri KIND OF has a quest in that she's looking for Geralt. She's doing a real bang-up job of it, too, wandering aimlessly from town to town, asking random people if they've seen him and getting herself abducted over and over.

Oh, but Yennefer DEFINITELY has a goal. What she's after is to wander aimlessly from town to town, indulging various impulsive whims until she inevitably gets bored and moves on yet again. Picking up on a pattern here?

I could understand this being a mediocre experience if we were talking about a long season, like 20 plus episodes. Isn't the whole point of "quality over quantity" to be, you know, the QUALITY, Netflix?… Expand

It's rather sad that Netflix has come from the amazing Marvel series such as Daredevil to this SJW drivel. Don't put modern politics in a medieval world, it looks completely out of place. Overall quality is also way lower.

The overall atmosphere and characters are fine, but it felt that storytelling was a bit too week, even for this kind of show. First of all, the lore from the books is never explained despite being far from obvious, leaving most viewers disoriented. Names and locations are also kind of hard to remember, and the show really does nothing to help us in that sense. They just go on with everything assuming we all took the necessary history classes. I played the videgames some years ago but still couldn't figure out a lot of the dynamics. The three main storylines are supposed to intertwine, but are not temporally parallel. Ciri has to find Geralt, but the other characters just travel aimlessly. Fights are well choreographed but also mixed with cheap CGI. A lot of the talking is boring, but the humor reminded me of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys". Maybe the budget was not sufficient to make something better than this, but I hope the success the series got will help it pay for better writers and CGI artists at least. It's not terrible but if the plan was to make the new "Game of Thrones", then there is still a lot of work to do.… Expand

Its really simple. Henry Cavill and the rest of the cast can't peform a miracle if the script most of the time is just horrible. Im only giving a five because of them and the crew that made the new look on season 2 that is very well done butIts really simple. (This is coming from a hardcore Witcher series fan and i can tell that CDProjekt Red crew were actuall diehard fans of Sapkowski's work just as me and i cant tell the same about Lauren) Strong 5/10 because its worth a watch but remember that books are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better.

P.S. Show isn't canon but with Sapkowski's such well writen characters its tough to simply forget their characteristics and go along with Lauren's Vision.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright I just finished watching season 1 of the Witcher and wanted to post my take on it. Full disclosure, I never read the books and have only played Witcher 3.

Before I started watching I read that the show was supposed to be based more on the books rather than games. But after watching this whole season its made me definitely not want to read the book, were they really that bad or did Netflix just do a poor job at adapting them for TV?

Theres just so many of your typical TV tropes/cliches. Characters hiding behind a rock and over hearing exposition when they would easily be spotted. Characters saying they won't do something then only moments later are doing that thing (Dara saying he won't drink the water, then smash cut to him drinking the water). They did the the tired old trope of showing the end in the beginning. Instead of building up to the battle they just showed it right up front, then when the battle finally happened there no was tension/emotional impact or anything because they already spoiled it all in the beginning.

Too many times throughout the season was the old trope of a character being on his back with his weapon just out of hands reach, then after a few cutaways he grabs the weapon and wins the fight. Every time there was an extremely time sensitive moment, the characters had to take time to say their extremely long goodbyes, or protest having to leave, somehow on a battlefield with people dying left and right the queen had time to kneel down and cry over the death of someone without someone chopping her down right at that moment.

The love between between Yenn and Istredd left me confused, because one moment they were just talking and the next scene they were madly in love? Their relationship felt super rushed.

Jaskier was just annoying comic relief and wasn't even funny comic relief. I just wanted to see Geralt be a bad ass and do bad ass things but every time anything happened Jaskier would fumble in and say some stupid stuff instead of letting the scene/show be about Geralt. Like when Geralt found the Djinn, Jaskier just starts making random wishes. I thought Geralt finding a djinn would be an interesting storyline but instead Jaskier just ruined it all and started wishing for random nonsense. And you can say "well thats just his character!" Well I don't care ,its stupid and makes for stupid TV.

There wasn't enough Geralt, it seemed like each episode was 90% boring dialog with Yenn/Cintra people/everyone else then and 10% Geralt, and almost no monster hunting at all.

The time jumping was confusing and served no purpose but to annoy me personally.

Why was that dude a dragon btw?

A lot of the effects were bad, Actually most of the effects were bad. I was wondering how they would pull off a show with all these cool monsters and make it look good, They didn't. One moment that stuck out to me that was just an obvious cost cutting measure was when Duny Transitioned back into a human, there was no slow transition from monster to human, they simply just cut away to crowd reactions, then cut back and he was human.

Skellige seemed especially worthless this season.

In most sex scenes the actors were fully clothed. There was a scene that particularly stood out in episode 6 where Geralt was boinking Yenn when they were both fully dressed.

Nilfgaard armor.....

What was up with that season finale where there was a giant battle being waged between dueling mages, Meanwhile Geralt fights a couple of ghouls and is out of commission the whole episode.

No Gwent?!

The controversial part. I'm all for diversity but lets not cast black people just for the sake of casting black people. There was no reason to cast an African American as Triss of all people, her look is iconic, she is supposed to be instantly recognizable by her look. If they didn't mention her name in the show I never would have know that was supposed to be Triss Merigold.

In closing, the show isn't a 10/10 like a lot of the fan boys are rating it, but it also isn't a 0/10 like some haters are rating it. I believe the Witcher on Netflix falls somewhere in the middle. Its a watchable show, with deep lore, but not enough time is spent explaining the lore,or explaining in it cohesive manner. Unfortunately The Witcher isn't going to be a replacement Game Of Thrones fans, That void will remain unfilled for now, but at least we still got 6 seasons of GoT, while the Witcher will be lucky to get half that. Hopefully improvements are made, and the second season will address all the legitimate complaints fans and critics have been talking about.… Expand

The parts of Yennefer and Geralt are good, and the actor and actress perform very well in my opinion. But the timeline and most characters' relationship are not good. They tried to make you feels sad when some character die, but you might not have time to know these character. And even though I think Yen's part are good, this character isn't charming as she is in the original books and games. She's childish, cynical. The show didn't convinced me, that she is the woman who Geralt would suddenly falls in love with her.

And I don't thing people who hasn't read the original books or played the games will fully understand what happened in the show. Because they cut a lot of important and key in formations out, like what is a witcher, where they come, why people hate them, what is Dryad, why human fears them(they looks like normal human in the show)...etc.

The musics and battle scene are good. But the visual effects feels very cheap.

Overall, it's not a bad show, but is not good as well.… Expand

Netflix has done it again, I remember Henry Cavill stating that he was in for the 7-seasons if the writers did a good job telling the stories of The Witcher and keeping true to the source material.

Henry is definitely my Geralt of Rivia. His enthusiastic portrayal of the white wolf is the best part of the show. Unfortunately the show has some fundamental flaws such as character development. Lack of it, to be precise. I believe they shouldn't have adapted the structure of the book so literally and jump around in time while separating the show to three different timelines. Instead of focusing on linear storytelling, most episodes felt like filler episodes wandering back and forth with the stories from "the last wish" that serve little purpose in pushing the main narrative forward. Forced diversity is also something that disappoints for someone like me who sees these stories for what they are which is Slavic folklore. I am still hopeful for season 2 to provide a more focused story and better character development, especially for Yen.… Expand

They've made it clear over the past several years that they are Leftflix.

The first episode is poor. I mean bordering on garbage. I almost didn't push past it, but I am glad I did. The rest of the series, while frequently riveting with some fun timey-whimey twist, suffers from poor direction and an obvious willingness to accept on set ad-libing. Dialog can feel pitch perfect for its genre and then someone will drop a line that sounds modern and ridiculous pulling you out of whatever immersion you might have had.
Once things start to pull together and get really good, the season ends.

There is much that is good but also much that is bad about The Witcher. In more capable hands this could have been a must watch series.… Expand

Tratta dai racconti, più che dai romanzi,che già hanno dato vita a una trilogia videoludica di grande successo, la prima stagione di The Witcher cerca di acchiappare il pubblico appassionato di fantasy orfano del Trono di Spade.

Lauren Schmidt Hirrisch, produttrice esecutiva che ha scelto anche il discutibile cast, ha deciso di ignorare l'adattamento videoludico e ispirarsi completamente ai romanzi. Una scelta decisamente poco rispettosa verso i fan del videogame. Eppure quando leggo "anche i fan amano la serie...", mi chiedo che tipo di fan amerebbe completamente tale serie. L'esaltato di turno? Probabile. Non era impossibile unire le cose (romanzo - racconti- videogame) a partire dalle bellezze mancanti nella serie. Ma non solo. Nel caso delle maghe - Yennefer e Triss - la scelta è stata fatta completamente senza senso. Nessuna delle due ha fascino, nè sembrano adatte per il ruolo stesso.
Le doti attoriali delle due attrici (Anya Chalotra 23 anni - Anna Shaffer 27) sono molto discutibili, non riescono mai ad arrivare davvero allo spettatore, quasi come fossero attrici esordienti. Una produzione importante targata Netlix avrebbe di sicuro potuto scegliere qualcuno di più consono ai due ruoli. Completamente. Invece hanno toppato alla grande. Neanche il digitale eccelle, con un primo mostro quasi inguardabile. Inoltre la scrittura non è mai particolarmente ficcante e i tentativi di ironia con un bardo che fa da spalla comica non fanno che peggiorare le cose.
La serie ha un buon Geralt, interpretato da Henry Cavill, attore discreto (spesso monoespressivo- ideale per la parte) ma la sua passione per il videogame unito ai romanzi, lo ha aiutato ad esprimersi al meglio. Notevole anche nel vederlo combattere con la spada, decisamente appaganti le coreografie, peccato che gli scontri siano pochi. Pochissimi. Senza dimenticare che la "caccia ai mostri" è pressocchè inesistente. Ma come è possibile? Il tutto è più concentrato sui tanti dialoghi (a volte inutili), e sulle varie dinamiche dedicate a Ciri, Yennefer e Geralt, quest'ultimo solo a metà. Ci sono interi episodi dedicati ai personaggi femminili, tirati un pò troppo, non completamente necessari (per allungare il brodo...) e spesso ci si imbatte in questi salti temporali, in cui al principio lo spettatore può far fatica a comprendere.
Il vero problema comunque è e resta il cast, dove se Cavill fa il suo buon lavoro, gli altri attori risultano semplicemente privi del carisma che il loro ruolo richiederebbe. Non sono del resto aiutati dalla sceneggiatura che dà modo di maturare, ma neanche da altrettanta presenza fisica, così come per le espressioni e l'intera credibilità.

The Witcher targato Netflix è una serie sopravvalutata, che ha successo solo per il nome allegato al videogame (e forse anche grazie agli orfani de Il trono di spade...) più che ai romanzi stessi. Sicuramente godibile ma non come ci vogliono far credere. Se non fosse stato per il grande successo del videogame, oggi non staremmo a parlare di Serie Tv e Romanzi. Il gioco targato "CD Projekt" resta inarrivabile ed è un peccato che non sia stato preso nulla da esso. Il cuore pulsante mancante.… Expand

To be honest, it could be worse. If you watch CW fantasy shows you would probably even like this one. But if you want something like Game of Thrones or some more of the Witcher games or books you will be disappointed.

It has some good moments, mostly thanks to Henry Cavill and Dandelion, but most of the time I was just trying to understand what people behind this TV show were thinking making so many scenes and episodes almost intentionally worse than they could be. The worst thing is that this show doesn't give you a feeling that this world is alive and breathing, with its own countries, cultures, races, organizations, laws, traditions that interact with each other by their own internal logic. You know, like good fantasy does. Instead it feels like a visit to a cosplay party where most of the people are just normal modern age guys you see each day, just in costumes. Seriously, even the old cheap polish Witcher TV show adapted some episodes from the book better than this high-budget title.
Anyway, I've finished it, and I've seen worse, but in the end it just filled me with regrets that someone better didn't adapt this book series.… Expand

After watching season 2, the same positives and the same negatives persist. I could not care less about Yennefer's struggles. Give me more Geralt and Ciri; that is what made the book series famous in the first place.

The good:
- Good production values (photography, music, etc.)
- Mostly good performances

The bad:
- Too much Yennefer, too little Geralt. The show allocates way too much time to Yennefer, her traumas and struggles, to the detriment of Geralt and Ciri. This is not Yennefer's story, it's Geralt and Ciri's.

- Too many creative liberties taken in the name of diversity and inclusiveness. The next time somebody shoots, say, a remake of Shaft, are they going to shoehorn white characters in the name of diversity?

- The jumping back and forth in time makes it extremely confusing for anybody with no prior knowledge of the books.

Conclusion:
Having read the books back in the day and played the third game, I was looking forward to this show. However, I had to force myself through the season and now find myself completely indifferent to a possible season two. This series needs a different showrunner.… Expand

6. Don't like the Vilgefortz - one of the greatest mages who beat the **** out of Gerald in books, and now he is pathetic;
7. Don't like the Jaskier - he just don't stand any chance with the original and polish voice acting of Zbigniew Zamachowski;
8. I liked Tissaia and Calanthe
9. And yes I agree 'Toss A Coin To Your Witcher' is quite ok and funny but it's not within the orignal climate of the witcher world;
10. Strongest role is Yennefer - but she couldn't compete with the Yen in Witcher 3 video game - it was not a fair competition;
11. Cahill as the Witcher is trying hard - thank you for that;

En pocas palabras, ya se sabía de dónde venía el éxito y aún así tomaron el arriesgado y desafiante camino de adaptarlo desde otra perspectiva y terminó pasando , en comparación a las consolas de videojuegos, muy desapercibido. Realmente en está última se trabajó hasta volverla una obra de arte que adaptó una buena historia y la moldeo hasta volverla un mundo de fantasía mágico, trágico en ocasiones y lleno de matices pero sobre todo, se sentía real. La serie podría repetir y extender la fórmula para continuar el éxito pero no y e aquí triste, de entrada el protagonista es totalmente opuesto a un tipo creible, un tipo flexible y hábil con la espada, peligroso y con una presencia muy notoria a dónde fuese, con un temperamento ácido e irónico, algo que en la serie solo se percibe lejano, es decir, este Geralt es un tipo que camina tieso y con los brazos separados del cuerpo, incluso cuando pelea a veces pareciera que le estorban los brazos de tanto músculo, como si fuese recién salido del gimnasio. Expresiones faciales y ojos apuntando en distintas direcciones y por si fuera poco unos pupilentes que le hacen ver casi enfermo de la tiroides. Las hechiceras dan pena, Yennefer está físicamente muy por debajo de la belleza que describen los libro y Merigold ni ese diga. Escenas que en momentos se sienten sobreactuadas y escenarios construidos y forzados, en fin hasta la ropa no se ve creible. En mi opinión dejo mucho que desear.… Expand

I am quite let down by many things involving this show, I love the books and price the games, however this TV show managed to make all of it fall out of place. The good, or should I say the best, part of the show is Geralt, he is everything I ever imagined for a TV representation of the character. I also liked the fact the they kept it true to the books, however I believe they made a mistake eating up two books in just one season.
The bad is almost everything else... Jaskier's song didn't feel contemporary to the show, I hate it so much... Acting is all over the place, Nilfgaard's armor is terrible, relationship between characters is inconsistent, time jumps are confusing, Ciri's character is underdeveloped as well as her relationship with Geralt, which by this point in the books was already close. The VFX and creature design is mediocre, specially that dragon. In conclusion I fear that if they don't fix this show by the next season I will stick with the books and the games, I don't what to feel as if I'm watching American horror story Fantasy edition. (Awful show by the way).

Shallow, cutting corners, acting sometimes lacking. Comes nowhere near the game (and I suspect the books as well) in terms of character development, story telling and describing the intricate universe the story is set in.

It is unfortunate that the creators did not use the full potential of the saga of Geralt. Bad script, cheap graphics, a complete lack of intrigue and interest in viewing. So much wrong with this show despite being entertaining at times and Henry Cavill doing an amazing and accurate job as Gerald of Rivia, especially if you are a fan of the Video game series which he seems to have taken great inspiration from.So much wrong with this show despite being entertaining at times and Henry Cavill doing an amazing and accurate job as Gerald of Rivia, especially if you are a fan of the Video game series which he seems to have taken great inspiration from. However despite this the show is an absolute mess in terms of story and direction, it’s hard to imagine just what was going on in the show runners heads with the plan for this series. The series opts for a story that is constantly jumping between timelines and characters, telling one story of Ciriilla. One of yennefer and ofcourse the Witcher himself who is often written out of his own story! With emphasis placed on yennefer and ciri’s journey being dragged out throughout the whole show, these moments were utterly dull and so out of pace with the other action packed moments of geralt as rare as they were! Rather than tell a cohesive story of geralt episode by episode showing us his journey and introduce us to important characters naturally the show would rather skip back and fourth in time in order shove important moments and people down your throat in an absolute mess of a 1st series. I am unsure of the budget for the Witcher but it is quite clear it was mostly dispensed in the effects and cinematography of the show with little care or attention going on the props and outfits, characters often look ridiculous and clothing and armour seem as though it could fall off at any minute, not to mention it looks cheap and unpractical, even the Witcher’s outfit looks as if it were stolen from a primary school drama class room. Overall I have to give credit for Cavills performance despite him not being given nearly enough screen time for a show that’s supposedly his...and also credit for the fighting choreography and effects which are spectacular in the first episode. These things make the show watchable at times but the story and direction in which they chose to tell it are unforgivable. The witcher could have been so more it feels like a massively missed oppertunity.… Expand

As of the end of season 2-I feel like they made a real mistake to follow closer to the book storyline. The video game has a way more compelling story told entirely from Geralt's viewpoint. I really don't know why they decided to air the show in such a weird order. Honestly, That decision really dragged down the show and I hope they got for a more linear approach in season 2. Putting that aside, It was ok. The cast was solid and the first few episodes were enjoyable but I lost interest by episode 5 with the final episodes being an absolute bore for me to sit through. There was very little dialogue, Episodes were far longer than they had to be and the CGI left a lot more to be desired.… Expand

So I really liked certain things about this show (enough to keep me interested in S2) but there are A LOT of stuff that is just . . . badly done. I feel this would be easiest to sum up in a list, so. . .

1. Cavill as Geralt is some of theSo I really liked certain things about this show (enough to keep me interested in S2) but there are A LOT of stuff that is just . . . badly done. I feel this would be easiest to sum up in a list, so. . .

1. Cavill as Geralt is some of the best casting I've seen. He delivers his lines perfectly and his choreography is A+. I've never seen sword fighting like his except for in the games themselves.
2. The world is rich and deep with lore, characters, backstory and plenty of stuff to scratch that curiosity itch. I spent quite some time digging up stuff in the wiki about the show.
3. Special effects are top notch. The creatures look fantastic, have weight, impact. They've done their homework on the original content and it shows.

And now the things I dislike, which there are plenty. The 1st one being the biggest. I understand it is like that in the games but it's just a byproduct of poor writing.

1. FAR TOO MUCH SEX. I am far from a prude but my god the amount of sex is so overly abundant it becomes rote. There was an article in which the writers said the reason why there's so many is because it's a 'quick way to demonstrate their bond and why Geralt would chase after X___'. This is a piss poor reason. There could be thousands of reasons as to why Geralt would chase after someone that has nothing to do with sex but because of the lack of imagination, they just go with the basics. Geralt would be a much more interesting character if he wasn't thinking with his dick constantly.

2. The romance subplots are cringy. Most of them don't last very long and they're obviously just **** to get it out of their system which once again begs the question: why show all of them? Just get to the plot. Stop wasting 20% of the movie with dick and vag shots.

3. The entire scenario is incredibly boring and rather confusing to someone who isn't already steeped in the lore and the world. I had to use the wiki several times to figure out what was going on before I realized that there was MANY time skips.

4, Not nearly enough fight scenes. Normally I dislike them as they offer nothing to the story but the fantastic choreography really needed more time to shine.

5. Last and definitely least as it's minor, but do we really have to constantly get gorgeous women and ugly them to go in the opposite direction? Really frustrating to see this constantly. Know this is really just me and not a big contestation but figured I'd mention it.… Expand
