The worst season of The Walking Dead, season 8 tears down several established arcs for "shocking" plot twists nobody wanted.

No es broma, el estreno de la séptima temporada fue posiblemente el mejor y más emocionante episodio de cualquier programa de televisión que haya visto en mi vida. De principio a fin, fue una montaña rusa emocional.

I don't no why people hate this season so much, because I think this season is one of the best season so far! It got a lot of action! And the Final episode is just amazing tbh!

Poorly written filler arcs and long, drawn out conversations have really destroyed The Walking Dead's reputation over the years, and really just made the show more plodding than it needs to be. Here comes season 8 to fix a lot of that with it's bombastic battles and limiting of the less substantial plotlines to a few mere side episodes that are spread far enough out across the 16-episode run to not be too much of a drag.

The gore effects are better than ever and the show continues to push the boundaries of just how much graphic violence can be shown on basic cable. The scale is very impressive as well with more faces and names being involved in this conflict than there were in Infinity War. This is the most action-packed season of TWD so far and it manages to be so without sacrificing big character moments.

There's some real growth from a lot of the protagonists this season, but it comes at the expense of their previously established beliefs and ideals. The writers are still very inconsistent with their handling of the characters and that's still frustrating. For example, I'm tired of seeing Rick go back and forth between "we need to save everybody" to "kill anyone who isn't us" from one season the next. The flip-flopping of personalities at a whim to fit whatever theme the showrunners are going for that season might be TWD's biggest flaw and that hasn't changed here.

It's easier than it has been in a long time to overlook these writing shortcomings however. This is the most exciting the show has been in a few years. On top of having a great villain in Negan and thrilling battles galore, pacing improvements make season 8 among the best of what TWD has to offer. This is the most plot progression the show has undergone since season 1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This season starts really well, but then treads deep into a mire that culminates in a death that - in my opinion - damages the story in a fatal way. Still, I was watching out of mere curiosity to see how the writers would resolve the plot.
The ending was... ok. It wasn't bad. It didn't feel satisfying, in the sense that you get closure or revenge. Drawing this war for 2 seasons was too much - the wounds that have propelled both characters and audience to want to see Negan pay for his atrocities are old by now.
What it did feel like was relief. Relief that this period of TWD is finally behind us. By all means, I think the show should have ended on that note. What works in the comics does not necessarily work well on TV. For one thing long-time actors choose to move on with their lives, whereas fictional characters have no such say.

So, it wasn't great, and it wasn't as terrible or traumatic as past experiences, but if you want to feel like you've watched The Walking Dead, and end with a few moments of calm, pretending that the protagonists will now enjoy some stability and hope after their incredible sacrifices - watch season 8, and stop here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely LOVED (past tense) The Walking Dead up untill the point where they encounter," The Governor" a couple of seasons ago. I used to anticipate with absolute child like giddiness the coming of a new episode and would obsessively re-watch previous seasons while waiting for the new season because the shows writing, acting, production values and pacing were so layered and complex that you can re-watch them and still revel in amazement how well made the shows were... and they all stood up to that increased scrutiny that comes with watching something repeatedly.

In stark contrast to the brilliance and careful crafting that made those earlier seasons, Season 8 was by far, the absolute worst display of outside forces co-opting an exceptionally spectacular series in order to inject their own version of structure, atmosphere and how shall I put it, morality that is akin to some hack, smearing pooh on the surface of a Salvador Dali painting thinking that it would be improving or paying homage to the original. I am a viewer that forces himself to watch through the entirety of a show before I submit a review because; A) I'm patient B) I'm fair C) I don't rush to judgement when things don't go the way that I would like them to. Call it a respect for the creative process. When something genuinely sucks, however, I will resent the heck out of it after giving the benefit of my doubt, watching the show to the end and found nothing worth redeeming. I get royally P. Ohhhed. I actually forwarded past the endless, annoying, protracted and plain stupid ten minute speeches that went on and on at infinitum.

The Governor talked too much and people were being charitable while simultaneously expressing how much they were fearful of the character remaining in the story line for long. Then along came the Saviors with a similar Governor like character that even Jeffery Dean-Morgan could not salvage. One gets the impression that rather than learning from audiences displeasure of the Governor character that the powers that be instead, doubled down on a similar character.

In summery, The show got transformed from one with very little dialog, huge amounts of atmosphere and embraced the kill or be killed world they now inhabited, be it walkers or the humans that preyed upon the survivors. They embraced their new reality of their situation with very little vacillation on morality play because morality no longer applied to the survival situations that they are constantly in. It got transformed into literally a soap opera from the 1980's where now, the majority of the show is dialog and not just any dialog, verbal diarrhea. We are no longer scared nor horrified and their constant hand wringing on what is clearly an injection of religious morality angst has had the effect of making die hard fans get the sense that we are being punished for our love for the series or worse, being lectured for it. A more cynical take on why this happened is that the new writers, producers or directors really didn't understand or even know how or what it was that made the show a hit and just gave up trying while simultaneously squeezing every last dollar from it's good reputation.

I want to briefly call out a few grievances here. A) Some things appear incredibly fake in stark contrast to how amazingly realistic the zombies appear. Andrew Lincolns' makeup. The gray rinse in his beard (beard extensions??) and the subsequent dark hair dye job in the retrospective scenes really stood out as looking uncharacteristically fake. There is also an over-use of this look of Rick Grimes with what looks like baby oil in his hair (to give the appearance of constantly being drenched in sweat) coupled with the actors limited spectrum of emoting grief, regret and disorientation and the red eye liner which is supposed to represent irritation from salty sweat dripping into his eyes. C) overuse of machine guns which never hit the bad guy, endless supply of bullets, running out only when they catch up to the bad guy C) too many opportunities to kill Neegan that didn't happen. D)The stupid C.G.I. tiger who only killed bad guys. D) The dread locks are so obviously wigs that often look crooked. E) how did Neegan get those pictures, flares and gun at the dump again? Insulting to our intelligence much?

I am currently watching "Maniac" which gave me a laugh out loud, pause, rewind and laugh out loud again moment which I think also applies to Carls' death scene(s) A character was half way through reading Black Beauty when she exclaims,"when is this effing horse going to die already?" I couldn't believe how long it took for them to let Carl die. It was absolutely terrible writing and I had forwarded past most of it after 5 or 10 minutes and was disgusted how it occupied a half to 3/4's of the episode. Think about that. 3/4's of an episode all shot from the same exact scene. You may as well be looking at a viewmaster and listening to a cassette of the dialog.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. “My mercy... prevails over my wrath”.

The Walking Dead season 8 was...underwhelming. Anticlimactic and really predictable. I would go as far to call this bad. This shouldn’t be the case, right? All out war has begun and Rick, or should I say the Alexandria crew will face off they biggest challenge yet. Yet, gets old really quick and you wish the season wasn’t like this. Most of it is shootouts with easy results and no tension. My relationship with this show is complicated to say the least. Not to say it was all bad, because that isn't the case which I will get into right now.

What can I say that hasn’t been said already by me, yet with every season I feel the need to gosh over the impeccable Andrew Lincoln. I think it has to do with his eyes which express so much emotion without him saying anything - Basically windows to the characters soul. He’s honestly the reason I’m still watching despite my critical thoughts with the recent seasons. We finally get to see Rick savage side again during his lowest point.

Also, Chandler Riggs was really damn good and improved a lot throughout the years, especially in the last couple of episodes where he finally showcase his skills. Giving his character a powerful send off. Plus the music for Carl’s death was so emotional, and the way it builds up to the climax, it’s just so heartbreaking. I can’t explain it properly in the best way.

Lauren Cohan was excellent this season and always has been since her first appearance. The character arc from being a farm girl, a grieving widow, and now a touch leader. Her mental breakdown in the episode ‘Wrath’ was truly heartbreaking.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan continues to light up the screen with his cold sarcastic tone that makes him evil and appealing. However, we finally see a softer side to him that humanize him and more down to earth. We have seen this briefly, just in small sections when his bullying goes too far. He’s becoming more open and vulnerable, proving he’s nothing like the Governor, in terms of being too far gone.

The cinematography was pretty good with the mixture of lighting and shades of dark that could easily represent the characters state. A little far fetched, although it’s another way of looking at it. And that’s really it for positives or the nicest thing I can about this season. Time to be negative:

Whoever made the decision to kill off Carl should never work on this show again. While my feelings have always be mixed on the character, but I can see Carl carrying on Rick’s legacy years after he dies. Like passing the touch, but not now.

The dumbest part is everyone shooting skills suddenly disappears away when the main villain is in good range. It’s not like there’s a far distance - Nope, just let the villain talk and give him time to easily get away. Oh and this is just the start of the episode, which confirmed my worries that this is the season overall. Rick was right when he said, “I’m gonna kill you. Not today, not tomorrow. But I will kill you”. While killing off Negan will be a waste of a great villain and actor, but makes the characters look useless.

Don't get me started on the stupid extreme close up compilation of the characters faces. Like, why?

How about Morales, a returning character from season one and this should be a major surprise to any fan of the show, but instead everyone is looking up who the character is, because nobody remembers him and it's not like he stays around for long anyway.

Now if you go back to my previous reviews, you start to notice a similar pattern in positives and negatives - Because that’s the season formula that infected my reviews. It’s like poetry, it rhymes.

OK, let's talk about the small guy in the room - Scott Gimple might be one of the worst producers/writers ever existed. Every terrible decision that’s been made on this show is Gimples fault. I honestly think the number of episodes needs to be trimmed down to avoid filler and pointless episodes that don’t development anything, just sleepwalking to the climax. Does it cost more money to make longer episodes?

Still, I’m hopeful for season 9 returning back to form with C**t Gimple out, despite the critical backlash and low ratings. Judging by everything I’ve heard so far about the new season, sounds like a soft reboot and will bring a fresh spin. By bringing life back into this already tired show. And with Andrew Lincoln leaving the show it will be difficult to watch, but hope they do something incredibly satisfying.

I’m not a ‘TWD’ hater, just addressing issues that have yet to be improved. We shall see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Only 2 episodes in, but man...this is the worst season I have seen. Walking Dead just sinks each season. Is it just too many cooks, or laziness?

    (1) Alright, so realistically we don't have all that many fully automatic weapons in the US, so my guess is they would actually need to know how to convert. However, these people that are smart enough to make automatic weapons cannot realize that sheet metal doesn't stop a bloody .22. These people who make automatic weapons never thought to test their sheet metal armor before attaching it to an armada of cars? Is the village that stupid? "Hey maybe we should armor our cars and stop bullets with our big fence metal". "Okay sure, I'll try shooting it.", "No, don't do that it makes too much sense."

    (2) First episode, most lazy setup I have ever seen for the love of god. Negan walks out onto the balcony with a group of goons. Rick and his group instead of ending things and killing Negan, decide to instead shoot about a million rounds of ammunition into a building which could be filled with actual innocent people. If someone tried to run on a balcony like that with 50 rifles pointed at their dome, it would be lights out instantly. TWD really couldn't come up with another confrontation? This isn't DnD where the big baddy can run away under ridiculous circumstances and cast a spell of invisible ****

    (3) The part where the RV blows up and Negan is left alive. Every single one of Rick's people at this point MUST know the war with the Saviors will not end until he is at least dead. What is this **** we have to leave, and the scene makes it so much more unbelievable? We've spent 5 billion rounds of ammunition followed by how much planning to get here and give up? Holy crap.

    (4) The overall decision making in 2 episodes is just terrible. Every decision is just purely stupid as if each person downgraded in education to kindergarten.

    (5) Episode 2 Rick confronted by a random dude in a room that is well-lit, but apparently he roles 1 for perception. I mean how blind is he? Then followed by being confronted by another guy. You know let's just repeat this process a few more times and get it all out right now. Really?

    (6) Repetitive stupid gun fights. Please just stop. The guy is 5 feet in front of me, but I'm going to miss 500 rounds.

My review of Season 8 in 2 episodes is a "No way, he's done Jim" out of 10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Walking Dead has become a dragging character drama that follows whichever storyline will deliver the biggest bombshell to its TV audience while upsetting its comic fanbase. The problems with this show have been evident in the last few seasons and hopefully the finale can remedy that with a time jump or change in tone. The promise of all-out war ended in lacklustre fashion as no one died on a show where no one should be safe. The fact that the show is supposed to be about the survival of humanity against the undead apocalypse, and yet the biggest threat is betrayal among human groups rather than trying to sustain a real civilization, has this show going on a downward spiral. Obviously the premise needs to adapt as characters cannot be expected to live like nomads and travel forever on a show like this, civilization is built by creating a foundation for society to thrive, but taking away the show’s main selling point, the walkers; aside for the occasional gimmicky death of a beloved original character with way more story to tell, shows that the writers are focused on more shock and awe than actual storytelling. While some of the stories continue to be interesting, they are either thrown into the background or killed off to continue the less engaging, campy and oversaturated stories of a few bigger characters. Hopefully the shift in tone that the finale suggests brings this show back into form with its earlier seasons by returning to its roots and letting us know that death can happen at any time in the apocalypse. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Negan is a cold blooded killer. He has slain the show completely. That is not to say the show wasn't struggling to find itself in the 2 seasons prior to Negan. However, the Negan/Savior story line has been about as bad as bad can get. The writers should be ashamed of themselves. I have been buying the seasons on Amazon for the last few years; however, I am out after the season finale that I have already paid for.

At this point, it would be wise for AMC to plan out and announce the end game for this show. If they announced that there were 2 more seasons to complete it, some people might stick around.

The high point of Season 8 has been the killing off of Carl. This was more overdue than the demise of Negan. The many low points are all basically the same...inane, poorly thought out, senseless "attacks" involving the careless discharge of semi-automatic weapons. There is at least one in every episode.

The best bullet maker is Eugene, he has come up with a way to make 1.000's of ammo rounds that have the uncanny ability to dodge all major characters.

As season 8 comes to a close, I believe a good 98% of the audience is now on Team Zombie. It really takes talent to get America rooting for the zombies.

So they are telling Morgan not to kill one of Negan's main guys who has caused a lot of grief for everyone. Why? No idea. They had no problem killing all the other people. But noooooo, not the main guy. THAT is the one guy YOU DO KILL!! Sigh! Or when One eye boy is dying and telling Rick to be peaceful and not be the way he is. REALLY?!! You really think you can reason with a person like Negan and have him leave you alone? Amazingly inane writing. I have never read the comics but if this is from the comics, then the comics are dumb too. I am officially done with this titanic of a show. I hope it loses the rest of the few people left watching it. Expand

Well-done, but then TWD is always well-done. What’s missing is the thrill of surprise, or the shock of surprise. “Mercy” at least offers a hint that one may be coming.

The urge to expand the story beyond the constant flight from mindless flesh-munchers is understandable. But much of the dread, as well as emotional urgency, has gone out of the show in the process. ... The staging of the action in the season premiere, in which Rick, Maggie and XXX lead an attack on the Saviors compound, feels well below the show’s previous standard, like Michael Bay on a bad day.

Its brisk pacing, big action, and focus on the camaraderie between the Alexandria, Hilltop, and Kingdom survivors makes for super entertaining television which makes you feel good without trivializing the drama. ... The episode offers more than popcorn-movie thrills and chills, however. Balancing out the mayhem is an understated, poignant father-son moment between Rick and Carl.
