While the set-ups are slight, the execution is delicious. .... Staples himself is an endlessly compelling presence, with a near-permanent furrowed brow, a baritone drawl and a lightness of touch in his delivery that means he never overexerts himself to land a punchline. The dialogue is sparse but pointed.

The Vince Staples Show is a dark, hilarious, intriguingly frank, and kinda-sorta-autobiographical story. .... There’s a decent chance The Vince Staples Show will be a one-and-done project for the artist, which would be a shame. But to paraphrase one of his catchiest singles, we should just be glad that he did it; it was magic.

It’s described as a limited series, which suggests that these five episodes are all there will ever be of it — which would be too bad, because it’s very good and could go all sorts of interesting, unpredictable places.

Some episodes are also more effective than others, particularly the first two. .... Regardless, none of this results in The Vince Staples Show losing any of its entertainment factor. There is never a dull moment on-screen, and the series succeeds in being completely unpredictable, making it difficult to look away.

The elements sometimes feel mismatched, which contributes to “The Vince Staples Show” feeling unfinished. Netflix has billed it as a “limited series,” and in an age when many bloated programs by that name are not limited enough, this one seems to end just as it’s getting started. .... While it lasts, “The Vince Staples Show” is an entertaining enigma, and there’s something to be said for leaving the people wanting more.
