Like college, the series can be a bumpy ride, but offers enough promise to transcend its freshman offering.

Despite its charms, “Sex Lives” can feel like a show that’s about 10 years past its prime. ... If you can accept its anachronisms, the show has its moments — especially when it homes in on the relationships among the four roommates.

As formulaic as the series’ writing can be (with typical liberal fodder, such as jokes about being triggered and complaints about the Brett Kavanaugh hearings), its ensemble hits the required comedic beats.
