This is middling in the grand scheme, but if you enjoy this particular genre (iso-horror?) there are plenty of worse ways to spend your time. The casting is excellent (superficially, the plethora of Scottish accents alone are worth the price of admission for me), John Strickland (Line of Duty, Big Love) does exactly what he needs to do as director, and there’s real suspense and real agony within the narrative. This is still highly watchable fare with some strong performances and atmosphere, it's just not quite as propulsive or as innovative as one might have hoped. Maybe the final three will come along and put those criticisms to rest. If not, and this remains comparable to a somewhat overstretched Doctor Who story writ large - well, there's nothing wrong with that either. Read full review

There are times when The Rig plays as a seabound Alien. Other times, the eco/oil theme, while worthy (see also State of Happiness and the latest series of Borgen), skews the script, with clunky asides about sustainable fishing, the Earth’s crust and an extinction event (“The great dying”). It’s a modern take on an old narrative form, and if there’s nothing as earthshaking dramatically speaking as whatever the Big Bad is managing as it comes for our crew, the need to know what’s what – including Glen’s Secret Sorrow and the role Mark Addy, who has yet to turn up unless I’ve failed to spot him under all the safety gear, is going to play – and the faith that it won’t all descend into a Lost-style debacle will keep you going until the end. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watched it. Hoped each episode would improve the narrative. Exactly the opposite. Massive waste of talent. The final episode could have been written a bored first-year undergrad film studies major. Would have been laughable except for the disappointment. Compston's is the only character who manages to avoid truly idiotic dialogue. Maybe he smelled the stink and negotiated some distance between himself and this farce. The villain is, of course, the bad ol' human race: we've "not been listening" to a sentient form of microscopic life, hundreds of millions of years old, an achingly obvious metaphor for Gaia/Mother Earth, that, for some unclear reason might regard us as a threat?!? On one hand, according to the entirely muddled climax, we can kill it; except - oh wait! - we can't possibly kill it because it exists all around the planet; or we can convince it through mental telepathy that we mean it no harm(?!?) and we'll avert global disaster. The script lost focus from the start and added every climate alarmist anti-capitalist cliche imaginable to further erode any coherece. I've been eager to see a new Compston vehicle. This one was a train-wreck. He needs a new one as quickly as possible to put this sad mess we'll behind him.… Expand
