This was so incredibly well made, every performance was flawless, even John Travolta who can be a coin toss. Sarah Paulson was the best part, I don't really care for American Horror Story (it'd ok id you go through imdb and see the pinnacle episodes), but as an actor she is absolutely fantastic and steals every scene. Cuba Gooding jr as Oj is probably the next best performance, but this show is a masterpiece of acting. They never really spend any time on whether or not OJ is guilty, which I think is the key to this show's brilliance. Expand

I really like how they show that in reality, prejudice, racism, manipulation and other human flaws are domain of people of all colours. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Never could I have imagined such a perfect balancing act performed on as controversial a subject as this. Without any need to even watch the show, you can see this balance even in the scores of critics and audiences. In a depiction of the largest and most divisive court case in the United States, this show scores well above the 90s on both fronts.

No message is too heavy-handed. Despite a massive focus on the role of race in the trial, it's depicted with such objectivity and grace that it doesn't even feel willingly focused on; it's just a natural consequence of how things would unfold. This balance, too, is shown in the depiction of both sides of the legal team.

While Robert Shapiro and the rest of the Dream Team are definitely not shown to be angels in any regard, you still find a way to feel happiness at their successes, even if it means a loss for the LAPD team. Out of them, however, Johnnie Cochran shines, by far, the brightest. While everyone else - Lee Bailey, Scheck, Dershowitz - certainly play their part in the team, their goal is greed and recognition. Johnnie, without a doubt, is also after those same goals, but he seems genuinely happy by the end to expose the racial issues that plague the LAPD. This, however, is just one side of the story.

If there were a protagonist to be picked in the show, it'd be none other than Marcia Clark. Chief prosecutor in the case, her iron will in the court mixed with her personal struggles make for the most fleshed out character we come to know. Contrasted with the band of broad, charismatic lawyers on the other half of the courtroom, her determined but stubborn approach of hard data and evidence is the double-edged sword she falls on. Combined with the struggles of her home life and the sudden nationwide fame, the case doubles as a challenge to her way of life and a challenge to her faith in the legal system.

As for the depiction of O.J. himself, while most casting was spot on, they made a seemingly conscious choice in Cuba Gooding Jr. OJ, in reality, is far more in line with what one would consider a star football player; he is well over 6 feet, has a far deeper voice, and has a natural aura of intimidation. Cuba Gooding Jr's depiction of OJ is far more vulnerable by comparison. His soft voice inflections remove a distrust someone might have for someone so naturally intimidating, making it much harder to make a snap judgment call on his guilt or innocence.

What this series showed best of all, though, is what an inflection point this case was for every single person involved with it. In the final 2 minutes of the series, we get a "where are they now" of every important character in the series. Marcia, along with everyone aside from Judge Ito, made massive book signings and used their newly-given notoriety to the best of the ability. The Dream Team split apart, OJ's life, reputation, and friendships were permanently tainted, Marcia and Durden both resigned, families sought damages, and the LAPD would be proven to have deeply rooted issues of corruption and racism. This case, as well as the defense, went well above and beyond just OJ Simpson, and this series had no issue taking on a story of that scale. This is the best criminal show, and best law show, I have ever seen, and it will continue to be for a long, long time.
