    It could be a marvelous show except it isn't due to some amature performance from important characters lead by Emily Mortimer then her associate Alisson Pill though Jeff Daniels delivered a brilliant display. Screenplay and cinematography was great but execution wasn't proper and non pertinent sometimes. Still a good show to watch for a good story line.

    Whip-smart and unpretentious, The Newsroom is Aaron Sorkin at his best. Jeff Daniels deserves a Nobel prize for his performance in this series, and no, I'm not being over-dramatic.

    I'd like to say this show is fresh & riveting with a very witty & intelligent dialogue, but they're using REAL news events from the past, and hindsight is 20/20. It's VERY easy to look BACK at what's already happened and concoct the PERFECT foil, answer or comeback that one DIDN'T have the presence of mind to come up with at the time. THAT'S exactly what's happening here... Sorkin hasI'd like to say this show is fresh & riveting with a very witty & intelligent dialogue, but they're using REAL news events from the past, and hindsight is 20/20. It's VERY easy to look BACK at what's already happened and concoct the PERFECT foil, answer or comeback that one DIDN'T have the presence of mind to come up with at the time. THAT'S exactly what's happening here... Sorkin has taken OLD (albeit important) news and, for entertainment's sake, re-written history to reflect the perfect response to, from & by an intelligent, arrogant-but-compassionate, well-read character that didn't exist at the time same REAL news was happening. So, to that end, I would be MORE impressed if he DID NOT use FACTUAL past news stories, but made up just as important FICTIONAL news stories to make the overall premise more believable and credible.

    It's the classic 'I wish I would have thought of THAT then...." statement that we ALL make AFTER the fact, and we all know how EASY that is.    … Expand

    This is a show for people who can't get enough of MSNBC( or any other liberal media outlet for that matter) and need more of it, in fictional form too.
    But mostly this is intended for people who don't trust MSNBC- if they don't believe what they see on MSNBC they will believe what they see in a well crafted movie: that Republicans are the bad rich guys and Liberals are the smart and cool    This is a show for people who can't get enough of MSNBC( or any other liberal media outlet for that matter) and need more of it, in fictional form too.
    But mostly this is intended for people who don't trust MSNBC- if they don't believe what they see on MSNBC they will believe what they see in a well crafted movie: that Republicans are the bad rich guys and Liberals are the smart and cool guys and oh, so modest.

    Life imitating art as the Main Stream Reviewers attack anything remotely honest about the political system, ie the Tea Party. The Head of the Network wants to eliminate the show because it attacks the Tea Party. She uses the gossip columns, real life uses the reviewers. Low and behold, another popular show bites the dust!     Aside from the West Wing, this is the great written show I've every seen (and I've seen a lot). The character development is fantastic and the real life events the show is built around lets you relive some of the biggest moments in the United States' recent history (with a slight editorial spin).

    I say it's a must watch.

    The fact that anyone could write a positive review on this claptrap is just so sad. WAIT: This just in: Republicans are trying to heat the earth in order to blow it up. Their plan is to escape first in space tubes. They are going to congregate in a nearby galaxy where they will sell pieces of our planet as inter-galactic skateboards. Lets cut to [pick your name] in [pick your place.] Whats going on over there: Well Republican Party Leaders are denying the allegations vehemently. But right now the President along with his Democrat Former Presidents are all holding hands outside the White House. They have issued this statement: We believe it is imperative that the planet should remain intact and and stay INSIDE the Milky Way. And that all Americans should vote Democrat from here on in!

    That sort of thing. Liberal utopia. The newscast team decides that Americans are not dumb. Except of course for the people that vote Republican. We will try to educate them.

    Horrible. Ridiculous. Terribly embarrassing and EXTEMELY popular. Liberal Dolts love it!

    All others... if you have a brain... don't waste your precious time.

    great show, it's a shame it ended that soon...
    Jeff Daniels, Olivia Munn & Sam Waterston were super brilliant.
    It incites people to think for themselves and show how new media is making us dumber everyday.

I couldn't keep track of all the things in the script I knew to be false. Governor Walker out to "break the unions."     Terrific...poses questions... I don't know of any other show that takes on the world events and possible background... The romances are okay... The political and world information is stellar. It is a threat to the tea party, Fox News, conservatives....a big source of negative reviews.

    This show rocks my world! Critics suck! It's so much better then most the duds on television and you know it. I'm just sad it's almost over. What a tragedy! Thank you Aaron Sorkin for being such an innovator and staying true to your voice. One of the finest writers of our time. Can't wait to see what you do next!

    The delusion and arrogance are unmatched. Is it a show that makes dumb people feel smart? I'm couldn't say since I've never met a person that likes this show. Time to retire Sorkin, you will not be missed.

    Every now and then, along comes a TV series that attains that rarefied air of greatness. The Newsroom is that show. Excellent acting, script, dialog with a fast enough moving storyline to keep you engaged. A special gem indeed. Highly recommend.

    This TV show was really entairtening and a bit sharp until....episode 5/1 season 1...! What happened ?? seriously? The glorifying of ben laden death as the greatest news in the century..?! and was the pedantic patriotic way to annonce the news necessary? This really made the serie loose all of its credibility for me..it s started well though...No America is not the greatest nation in the world..

    I highly recommend "The Newsroom" to anyone who is interested in current events but might find themselves disinterested and/or detached from today's journalistic news media. I have not started season 2 yet, but this show captured my attention from the very first scene of Will McAvoy giving his "America is no longer the greatest country in the world" speech at Northwestern University. The Newsroom not only entertains us but inspires a hope of what American journalism can be, and to a greater extent what the framework for a "national conversation" can look like. I noticed a complaint about the news topics not being "current" enough -- but keep in mind when this show originally aired...it's about as current as can be. For those who care, it's a much more wholesome product compared to a lot of the garbage that I see the critics praising, and I even find the show heartwarming at times (usually towards the end of episodes lol)..... give it a fair shot and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

    Sorry critics, but you're dead wrong on this one. It's the viewers whose opinions matter most anyways, and the numbers don't lie. Two thumbs up!    … Expand

    I really want to love this show. I really do. There are a lot of things I do love about this show. The Sorkiness speed-talk, the great performances turned in by the lead are all stellar in my book. Two things are holding me back from loving the series. One, the lackluster performance by the supporting cast. Two, all the freakin' yelling. The cast needs a major group enema and a gallon ofI really want to love this show. I really do. You've got associate producers yelling at the sr. producers. EP's yelling at the talent. The talent yelling at anyone breathing. Some guy who doesn't even work on the show(Don whats-his-face) yelling at everyone.Some roommate of the AP chick dating the SP just burst into the office on valentine's day and started yelling and screaming. Can somebody call security?? It's completely chaotic and not in a train-wreck-you-cant-help-but-watch kind of way. Its just a train wreck. It is possible to have all the elements of drama with much less yelling and screaming. I would enjoy this show 1000% more, if the characters learned how to use their inside voice and knew their place. It's called being a professional actor. This show is based on Chris Matthews and Lawrence O'Donnell, and Ed Schultz, all of whom are clinically insane. They've all had real life meltdowns and are admitted socialists.     LOVE this show. The writing and dialogue is amazingly witty and clever. The characters and plot are engaging. I also appreciate the political sub-texts. I can't wait to see what happens next season.

    A well written and well paced story that works around true news stories. I just had to watch the first 10 minutes of the very first episode and I was hooked. It's a drama that's relate-able if you pay attention to the news.

    i really enjoy this show and the characters. I don't understand why it is considered "hate viewing" buy so many perhaps because it wears its liberalism on its sleeve? Its West Wing in a newsroom big issues, snappy dialogue, a good mix of characters to like and to hate, and some eye candy too.

    The Pilot is phenomenal. Watch that if nothing else. The rest of the show has its highs and lows. Witty like Sorkin can be, but with some annoying, messy characters. It's intelligent but also occasionally preachy, schmaltzy and melodramatic. It's not great television, but it's certainly bold. 6.8/10

I would say the guy who says that is worse professional ever. The show is brilliant sometimes, kind of dumb about the personal love relationships but quite clever about the rest. Mackenzie is supposed to be this great and powerful producer, yet, she doesn't know how to not send an email to the entire staff? Part of it is the script, for sure; but much of it is how she over plays each and every scene. No Ex. Producer would carry on the way she does, near hysteria in the public rooms about her personal life. She comes across as frail, weak and lacking in the gravitasGreat show; really grows on you.     The heavily forced dialogue is unforgivably cheesy and the characters are outright annoying, especially in the way they finish each other's sentences. This show had great potential from an experienced writer but unfortunately, the quality does not match the ambition.

Sorkin delivers witty, fast-paced dialogue giving the audience something to really sink their teeth into. The banter amongst characters, reminiscent of Sorkin's The West Wing, overshadows anyWhilst many critics have judged The Newsroom harshly for being 'preachey' and ignorant of the fourth estate, I would like to take the time to acknowledge the positive qualities of this wonderful show. Sorkin delivers witty, fast-paced dialogue giving the audience something to really sink their teeth into. The banter amongst characters, reminiscent of Sorkin's The West Wing, overshadows any of the mundane, drab language that is plastered all over commercial TV. Furthermore, the show itself parallels the pace of the dialogue never letting up a dull moment. The show has also received a lot of criticism over the unrealistic characterisation of protagonist Will McAvoy. To any non-believers of the 'paragon' archetype, I would like to direct your attention to the immense success of Sorkin's Jed Bartlet, protagonist of The West Wing. Sorkin's Newsroom gives us hope that the paragons of this world will attempt to make the world a better place. Watch this show and see the characters defined not by their profession, but by their personalities as human beings. It's about time we had a show like this!… Expand

    This is just perfect...
    Its not only entertaining, but unpredictable and keeps us fully engaged in it...
    Its like you can feel the show...
    After watching the start of the 2nd season, I think Its going to be a bigger hit than anyone ever expected...

    I noticed that you have Jane Fonda in your series of Newsroom. I am a Vietnam Veteran. I and thousands like me would never watch any show or series with Jane Fonda in it. At the VFW post I belong her picture is at the base of the urinals. This woman should have been charged with treason. She is a shame to Americans. It is a shame that your series felt she was needed. Big mistake.

    After reading the reviews of pretentious journalist from main written media outlets like the NY Times and Wallstreet, I love the show even more. It has depth, comedy, and is one of the most thought provoking cable programs I’ve seen in a long time. Bravo.

    When finished with the 10 episodes, you will only feel sadness for Sorkin, the show's writer who attempts to indict journalists and tea party politicians but actually succeeds only in psychological projection. Indicting himself and letting us live in the twisted, tortured, cognitive dissonance and willful self delusion that is his mind.

    Great drama immerses the viewer in the story. Good drama attracts the viewer to characters. OK drama entertains. This drama can't get out of its own way. It's so shockingly bad that the viewer essentially cannot stop thinking about the psychological issues of its creator and the torture it must be, being Aaron Sorkin.

    The show is sanctimonious, it panders, it insults your intelligence, it is openly hypocritical. But worse, perhaps, is its predictability. It is superficial, transparently propagandist, insulting to its viewers and indicts its fans along with its creator as hopelessly one dimensional, myopic, and ignorant. And its cynicism while doing it betrays a deep psychological malfunction in a nation where this type of entertainment is so popular and fools so many people.

How can a show so captivating and motivational, receive such low marks from the greatest and most experienced critics of the last 40 years? It's because Aaron Sorkin didn't write this show to please 50 year old critics. He wrote it to inspire 20 yearIf you are like me, you just discovered the genius that is The Newsroom, only to find the reviews of the show unfavorable to say the least. How can a show so captivating and motivational, receive such low marks from the greatest and most experienced critics of the last 40 years? It's because Aaron Sorkin didn't write this show to please 50 year old critics. He wrote it to inspire 20 year olds. He is speaking to a generation of young American's who have been told their entire lives that they are responsible for the collapse of a nation, and instead he is reminding us that through education and inspiration, we are the solution to the sickness that was our fathers generation. He uses drama and romance to lure in not just the highly educated, but all aspects of society while weaving in political messages and the importance of questioning the media. He learned from the West Wing that no 20 year old is taking a stand against big business by watching an hour of political based dialogue, so instead he wrote a series that speaks to them, incorporates drama, love, and even the power of the Internet and gave them a protagonist to look up to.     Like most reviewers, I was drawn to this series because of the opening scene in the first episode which I would rate a 9/10. I was really excited to dive into this show. As the season went on, I just kept getting more disappointed with the ongoing fake wittiness of the new crew and the lack of depth in the acting. It is incredibly forced and uncomfortable to watch. The characters "Mac", "Maggie", "Jim" and "Jon" are annoying to watch and so one dimensional. There acting is pretentious. "Will" and "Sloan" are a joy to watch due to incredible acting. Probably the reason while I'll tune in again for season 2. I love the premise of the show but I hope they don't repeat season 1's short falls and just throw more recently experienced real life new stories at us wrapped with more pointless, grating banter.… Expand

    If you can keep up with Sorkin, you'll love this. If you don't like Sorkin's style, you'll hate this. The show has all the Sorkinisms: rapid dialogue, conversations while walking down hallways, characters who are quick to give impassioned monologues, and probably other ones I can't think of right now. Personally, I love it.

    This could easily be the best show to come out of the American TV machine. Especially in the context that this programme is written in. Why can't entertainment show that the writer has an education and has assumed that the viewers have an education too? The acting is superb from a brilliant ensemble that is showcasing the acting talents of both the old-'er' generation with Jeff Daniels and Emily Mortimer portraying a dynamic, professional, yet chaotic, immature duo. Along with rising heavyweight Dev Patel, the show has only one place to go. Up. The only hang-up I have about this show is the underlying personal attitude that Sorkin has politically. This may seem hypocritical given what I've just said, however, Sorkin's thinly veiled content for the ultra conservatives in the Republican party (given his strong sympathies for the Democrats) is easy to spot and is only disguised by the fact the leading character is a Republican himself. Having said that, it's always fun to see someone poking fun at the Tea Party. The show has a great ensemble, great potential and a heavyweight production company, (let's face it HBO don't lend their name to a flop).     Love this show! Lots of pertinent information about some of our real life news crises, full of humor, witty double entendre and dialogue, and makes you feel for the characters and their personal issues..so much character chemistry and just plain awesome! I don't normally purchase seasons/box sets of anything, but this is a must-have! Can't wait for the second season!

The finale was a good return to form yet still The Newsroom was best when the episodes focused on the news stories and had a little character drama around the sides, and even the finale which was a great viewing still didn't give us what made the show so fantastic to begin with. Overall an incredible first half, brought down by a lacklustre second half, give season 1 of The Newsroom 8/10. Bring on season 2 and Mr. Sorkin, bring in consistent writers that can repeat the quality of the first half of S1.… Expand

    Having watched 9 episodes I have to downgrade my previous score of 7 to a 4. Episode 9 contained so many sanctimonious, cringeworthy moments I feel a little bit dirty watching this show.

    The fact that Geoff Daniels rises above the mediocrity of the rest of the cast and the continually inconsistent standard of the dialogue he is given to deliver such a stellar performance is incredible.

I always wondered what would go through the mind of journalists who sold out for corporate controlled news manufactured by propaganda and hate mongering. Truthfully, I thought it would end after the gunning down of Gabrielle Giffords (my friend went to high school with her and has said nothing but wonderful things about this courageous woman) but alas, I was wrong. After years of being a proud centrist democrat, I became an independent during the Bush Administration because I could no longer believe democrats and republicans nor could I honestly TRUST what the media was reporting due to their corporate and political interests. The news became "friends" with the establishment therefore their credibility was lost-NEW YORK TIMES for example outing a CIA rogue operative all to control the Iraq War or having an entire network use language to influence the American People in the same way the far left or right spin doctors influence their agenda. My hope was that the new Administration would be cleaner and so would the news. The first two years, more HATE on the airwaves while an entire body of congress was stymied because of the rising Tea Party pushing such a vitriol and ignorance in society, where we were discussing if the President of the United States is a terrorist; not a natural born citizen; treated like less than a man; good republicans like Olympia Snowe or Chuck Hagel, Joe Scarborough, were being called RINOS-even the RNC Chairman comparing our president to a cowardly sea captain of a cruise ship-just disgusting! The hate toward moderate republicans and centrists because they are not far right or far left... enough was enough. President Reagan would be appalled and so am I as a citizen of the United States. Sorkin rips off the corporate duck tape glued to 'reporters mouths' and gives them a voice behind the camera. That to me is refreshing because I seriously doubt any college student wants to grow up and LIE to the American People on a daily basis all for political power and personal gain. They want to enrich lives and be courageous and change our world for the better. I am not surprised by critic outrage over this show. It's difficult to see what you've become-a weak shell of its former self, and a part of the problem. The news should not create truth-it should just simply TELL IT. Thanks Aaron Sorkin, and Scott Rudin and HBO for having the guts to TELL the TRUTH on both sides unlike the majority of the media-doesn't. Sadly, there are only a handful of good journalists on the airwaves. I'd like to see some of them take a stand like Richard Clarke did and say, "we screwed up and let you down. Now we start over." You owe it to Cronkite, Huntley, Brinkley, Jennings, Russert, Brokaw, Rather, and Edward R Murrow but most of all, you owe it to yourself! Even Bob Woodward can't even keep his integrity in check. There is a lot to unravel in a short review, not everything here is bad but overall I have more problems than praise. I will be watching next year hoping things get better.… Expand

    The only good thing about this show is the parts where they report something good like the Gabby Giffords part. The senior cast (Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, and Jane Fonda) are the only reason i keep watching. the younger cast makes me feel that their sub plots are just there to fill in the extra space to fill

    This has got to be my favourite new show of the past three years at least. A great cast fronted by the brilliant Jeff Daniels, who does not get enough work for my liking, and the imperious Emily Mortimer supplement well-founded story lines that allow us to see some of the ongoings behind the screen. So what if it is glorified? If it wasn't, I highly doubt every episode would be entertaining.

At worst the show is egotistical, smug, elitist, condescending, preachy and just poorly written. Much like the essay of a college freshman who just wrote an essay about all the evils of capitalism. Sorkin doesn't ask for complexity from his writers or staff, he doesn't ask for quality either by the look of it. The show has no grey area for its topic so instead of explaining it clearly it loudly yells and screams at the veiwer "look at my show! We cover topics of importance, real importance! Stuff that real journalists should have covered!" Guess Sorkin and Co didn't realize the news already did this, infinitely better than the show. The actors are wasted on the **** teleplay. Jeff Daniels and Emily Mortimer are wonderful and make great use of what they have, but they much to work with. Olivia Munn can act (although I find her character hard to believe as being 'socially inept' considering her previous career, even if she was once a reporter). Frankly, Sorkin and Co should ease up on the politics for next season (it would make the show infinitely more watchable) in favour of focusing on what actually works in the show; the inter office politics. That part is well written and feels authentic rather than preachy and smug. Who knows, maybe Sorkin will realize that he needs to write teleplays about news stories that are insightful and well written that don't treat the viewer as a 6 year old. That would be a treat to see, but until this happens the show can only be described as a preach selfindulgent mess which is the work of smug and egotistical writer's and producers trying to tell professionals how to do their jobs. Aaron Sorkin your show is horrible and you can do much better, you have done better, so fix it.… Expand

    Fantastic show covering the flaws of media and politics whilst still presenting that beautiful hope that we can do better. Characters and dialogue are exactly what you expect from Sorkin and for those who don't like it, chances are it's because you don't get it.

    fantastic acting, great actors and a brilliant humour amongst a strong and compelling storyline. The only negative I would say is that it can be hard to follow in parts when it seems to talk in a fast paste way and is a bit much to keep up with. Other than that I have really enjoyed this series and I look forward to the second series with great anticipation.

    This show is leaps and bounds above anything else on television or HBO; really a pleasure to watch such quality writing/depth . As others have noted the dialogue can be somewhat manic but I'd truly be hard pressed to say the show could get much better. Fantastic job all!

    At the time of this writing, the first 8 episodes are out, and I've watched them several times (!!!) each. And since there's little else on these days, I'm probably going to re-watch them repeatedly until the season is over, and Season Two comes out.

    Many media critics are annoyed by the series. Maybe it's a little too close for comfort, or maybe their expectations are set to the wrong number. This isn't an attempt at rewriting/explaining/appropriating historical facts, it's a "what if" scenario set in our recent past. It's about "What if we decided to do news the way they SHOULD be done." And it pulls no punches, and it calls a liar a liar. Which is what a number of politicians do with impunity, these days. It's good (and VERY cathartic) to see a show that calls them out on their bull.

    Anyway, give it a shot, you (almost) can't go wrong.

I was pleasantly surprised when out of nowhere and within the first five minutes of the first episode I was thrown entirely by how honest and heartfelt the show seemed. Within the first five minutes I knew that this was a gem of a show and that people should give it a chance

We will now subscribe to HBO because of this show. It has an excellent mix of character development, drama, interaction and humor.     Really not sure where all the critics are coming from about this show, from where I sit this is the best drama on television. HBO delivers pure gold once again, honestly at this point I rarely ever watch anything that isn't on HBO.

    I just wish Will McAvoy was a real person with a real news show, because America really could use a f*cking lawyer right now.

    It is sad that people watch one or two episodes and think they can understand the true dynamic of a show. Newsroom is an ever-changing, intelligent show about events that have been important to America in the past few years. As a show the acting, directing, and camera work is incredible. The characters are all so relate able and interesting.     Incredible show. One of the best that I have seen for a very long time. The fact that they are using real events as a backdrop to the show is a stroke of genius. If you want to see a brilliantly written show, with characters that you can invest in, then look no further.

    The more I frequent this site, the more I feel the critics are out of touch with the average user. This show is fantastic. Great acting, compelling stories, hilarious moments and it uses real life news stories as a backdrop. I love the different perspectives that we get on real events and I love the chemistry between the characters. Watch this show.

    Don't listen to the critics on this one. Its painfully obvious that the low average score--if you read the bad reviews--is due to the industry not taking to criticism of itself very well, and criticism of the news industry is this show's bread and butter. The dialogue between characters is whip smart and funny, and the pacing of the series as a whole (so far) is excellent.

    Yes it's got its flaws... The actors took a little while to settle in to their roles but this show is excellent.     Is the best show I see in my life. Maybe ordinary people don't understand the show because in liberal. The negative critics may me sad because is no fair. Jeff Daniels and Sam Waterson are great.     Pulling a show off like this is incredibly difficult. They handle real news stories and balance it with dramatic fiction. The core relationships are essentially a clone of the 80s classic Broadcast News. The behind the scenes newsroom content is chillingly accurate though. Jeff Daniels will win an Emmy for this and Emily Mortimer is fantastic.

    Best show since the West Wing, if you likes Studio 60 and TWW, you'll adore his. Sharp dialogue, "speaking truth to stupid" is wonderful, great script, VERY funny, so far awesome story lines... loving it. And Ep.4 overtook Ep.1 as ny new favourite, if that was possible.

The real genius of the show is that this is slightly alternate history. A history where in the first episode one news network attempted what most everyone watching the Deepwater Horizon disaster wanted to see. Yes, there is exposition in the form of speeches, drama and fast cuts to keep you from getting bored. A history where instead of playing catchup because of chasing ratings, the network we are watching practices journalism at the beginning. And showed a believable gulf between what we saw two years ago and what we only now know we wanted to see. In the second, you see the aftermath of this choice, how this approach places the network at a disadvantage to those networks that pander. Jeff Daniel's Will Mcavoy will at first remind you of Keith Olbermann in the third episode with his editorials, but a better comparison would be Edward Murrow. Daniels portrays an aging network anchor effectively, and the episodes don't feel like they last an hour. This is worth watching, makes me wish I could see how they would have handled so many other episodes in the past twenty years.     I am finding the show very disappointing. I loved Sportsnight which this is far more akin to than West Wing. I was hoping for something more West Wing style that dealt with news items and be more center than so left liberal that is all hyped into a tizzy. So back to the show - the characters are obvious, the plot pre-determined and story line completely lacking. Its like Faux news its all about the characters trysts and hype. THE NEWSROOM is the best of the best and the cast is superlative. Let some of the moronic right wing press have a go at you. It only shows how small minded and out of touch they are.

Maybe it would help me pass the time until The Good Wife, Homeland and Boss all return next fall. The 3rd episode completely disgusted me.     I was looking forward to watching this show, on account of being a big fan of Jeff Daniels and of Aaron Sorkin, but did not enjoy it. There is too much sudden shouting for no great reason, many of the secondary characters are stereotypical and treated contemptuously and there are too many patronising speeches. - CAN DO BETTER!

This is the first show I've really seen where I love every character, or at least love to hate the rest.     This is such an entertaining show. Episode three was filled with great acting, dialogue and a very ironic and mind blowing use of Jane Fonda to confront issues she is directly related to in real life. Sam Waterston is a hoot. I am enjoying the time that is afforded to both character development and to an in depth look at important issues. This is smart, entertaining television.

The dialogue is witty and fast paced, typical of Sorkin. But ultimately the show's plot device is that the writers set up arguments on terms favorable to whatever point they're trying to make and then proceed to pat themselves onThe show has no characters. Through the first three episodes Sam Waterson is the only actor who has been able to illustrate any depth in the role he is playing. The dialogue is witty and fast paced, typical of Sorkin. But ultimately the show's plot device is that the writers set up arguments on terms favorable to whatever point they're trying to make and then proceed to pat themselves on the back for arguing so successfully. Having this silly argumentative style as the central plot device is a problem when the show has no compelling characters. To put a less kind spin on it, the show could be retitled "Strawmen."… Expand

    I started watching, predisposed to liking this series, based on the coming attractions and the fact that most HBO original series are generally pretty good.     I like all the actors, particularly Sam Waterson, but this show is just too cheesy for me. No subtlety, just a lot of over-dramatic speechifying. I started watching the second episode and not sure I'll even bother finish watching.

What started in episode 1 as a cutting and crackling critique of modern America through the prism of televised news devolved in episode 2 into a preachy mess of irritating people screaming and gesticulating wildly, neither half as funny or half as smart -- or half as believable -- as they're supposed to be. Abysmal. Avoid.
