Each of the opening three episodes conclude with their own little grace notes, neat bows on a new development that, again, in a multitude of other contexts would come across as treacly. By fully embracing the strengths of the show and its franchise predecessors, “Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” has already earned those moments with breakaway speed.
-
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is a feel-good show that dutifully honors the past, doesn’t reinvent the wheel, and delivers the comforting optimism we’re all craving right now.
-
Game Changers isn't epic enough to serve as a tentpole series for Disney+, but it is the sort of solid entry that helps establish the service as not just the house that Baby Yoda built, but rather the home of good clean fun, for parents and kids alike.
-
By subverting its source material’s premise and keeping Bombay in the mix but not at its center, “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” makes sharp, timely updates to the timeless story of “good guy” underdogs who just want to have some fun, but aren’t about to complain if they can stick it to the “bad guys” with a win or two. That spirit, more than the team’s logo or legacy, is the real Ducks way.
-
Because it’s a series, “Game Changers” has more layers than a film. While Alex initially insists they just play for fun, by the end of episode two Evan says losing every game isn’t fun, ensuring this series will have some smarts to accompany its big heart.
-
Sharp writing, charming performances, and the undeniable appeal of an entertaining underdog story combine to make Disney+’s newest series one of the most enjoyable shows of 2021.
-
The comfortable beats are welcome. The young cast, particularly Simkins, Bhatia, and Noon, are charming and infuse the series with a lot of goofy fun. Much of the humor is reflective of the show’s target audience.
-
“Game Changers” has a quirky energy that allows those of us in the audience to have fun whether the characters win or not — which is, appropriately enough, the entire message of the show anyway.
-
Game Changers is a wholesome entry into the Mighty Ducks canon that maintains the ’90s-style earnestness of the original trilogy. Saccharine and oftentimes precocious, yes, but with more competency and heart than, say, Fuller House.
-
Game Changers is breezy, escapist television, the kind that should help us all stop quacking for 30 minutes.
-
The little team that could is a timeless tale, and though Netflix‘s “Cobra Kai” does a better job at breathing new life into a decades-old story, “Game Changers” is a smooth skate for those already invested in its world of misfits on ice.
-
Clearly, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers wasn't eager to change much of anything about a proven and familiar formula. Yet in terms of crafting an entertaining, cheerfully lightweight show around this latest quack attack, the producers have largely achieved their goal.
-
[Cobra Kai] subverted the source material and delivered a moving meditation on growing older. Game Changers, by contrast, is all about reinforcing the Disney message about being the best version of yourself. ... Estevez is agreeably cantankerous as a grumpy old (ish) man hauled onto the ice once more and against his better judgement. Mighty Ducks viewers may well empathise with his reluctance as they, too, are dragged back to a franchise that perhaps isn’t all it’s quacked up to be.
-
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is only OK, but that matches the pedestal upon which I place the movie. If you have more reverence, your disappointment might be greater.
-
This series isn’t much of a game changer, no[r] does it engender any promise that it will try to [in] future episodes. Instead it seems ready to give viewers more and updated “Mighty Ducks” action; the nostalgia here is not in building, but passing on the brand's family-friendly sports comedy to a new generation. “Game Changers” just shrugs that if the Mighty Ducks’ strategy worked for three movies, it’ll simply work here.
-
Graham is charming as always even with thin material, and it’s not hard to see that Game Changers is just slow-playing Gordon’s emergence, in the same way that Cobra Kai treated Daniel LaRusso as a minor character when it began. These early episodes are pleasant if a bit dull.
