Sets are amazing. So are clothes. And so are Susie's lines, which are the smartest, most surprising, and funniest in the show.

The problem is that, beyond Susie, we have a beautiful box without much inside. Like a lot of contemporary comedy, the self-consciousness is not quite smarmy, but close. "Look at us. Aren't we cute? Aren't we clever? Look at how clever we are." So

So rather than seeing characters actually _be_ in the situations, we are watching them watching themselves be there. Or we are watching them through the writer/director watching themselves make a show. It's hard to be entertained, beyond superficially, when what you're mainly watching are people showing you how entertaining they are.

It's kinda like the opening shtick of the would-be comedian doing someone else's shtick. One is left so hungry for the original, which was genuinely funny.

There is only one weak spot in the show. It's a plot. It's boring and the whole 8 episodes could be done in 1 maybe 2 episodes.

There are great one-liners, endearing performances and a visually opulent representation of New York in the nascent “Mad Men” era. But the world of the show simply doesn’t make sense.

The show drops in lovely little moments, funny, melancholy and insightful.

On its face, this show is a solid new entry in the Sherman-Palladino pantheon of wisecracking heroines and the assorted people who love them. But The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is also a stellar showcase for a woman unleashing her full fury and potential in a way no one--least of all herself--saw coming, or will soon forget.
