I've seen a lot of movies and shows that are about stand-up comedians. Some of them are hilarious, many of them are duds, but they all have one thing in common: the segments where characters are performing actual stand-up routines are always the weakest segments in the film. Whether it be Obvious Child or The Big Sick, both of which are very funny films, but the actual standup routines themselves featured within the movies fall comparatively flat. By contrast, the very first episode of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel contains a standup routine near its end that kicks off what is one of the wittiest, fastest, and most hilarious series premieres I've seen in years, and never once through its eight episodes does it let up. I honestly don't think there was every a point where I went for more than a minute without laughing. I have no idea why Rachel Brosnahan wasn't on my radar before now, because she just kills it. She walks on set with so much raw fire and energy and confidence you'd mistake her to have been doing this her entire life, which is why I was shocked to learn from a quick glance at her IMDB page that she's never actually helmed anything before. Of course she's briefly appeared in quite a few series and movies in the background here and there, but to think this is the first project she's ever headlined is almost too much for me to believe, because she is brilliant. And that all goes without even getting into the technical details, because this series also happens to be visually rich, featuring many long, fluid shots that are cut together beautifully, with gorgeous costuming and set direction. I just don't know how I'm going to stand the waiting between seasons. Expand

The Palladino team has done it again. They are incredible in creating inspiring and crazy-good stories. I loved Mrs. Maisel and I hope they will keep working on streaming platforms. They are incredible!

Absolutely brilliant. Rachel Brosnahan portrays the rapidly evolving life of Mrs. Maisel hilariously, poignantly, and manically. Also a visually rich time capsule of late 50s New York.

Delightfully neurotic-Jewish-American, like Roth characters off-camera. It's a bit of a shock to watch an actress so obviously not Jewish perform the role, but the 'schtick' nonetheless permeates the episodes very convincingly and effectively. And Brosnahan's performance as unwittingly hilarious when freely desperate is very compelling.

Amazing writing and amazing performances by the entire cast, specially by Rachel Brosnahan, who's the heart and soul of the show and leads with a charm and charisma that i've never seen before.

It's a deal breaker for some and I am in that group. It's not that the show doesn't have it's moments, it does but they are drown out in a sea of Aaron Sorkin style blather that is anxiety inducing. If you're into that style, you might enjoy this show as it's just as fast as Gilmore Girls and, paired with stereotypical Jewish banter, it's really fast as lighting. Stylistically, it does seem like a femme version of Mad Men. In era only though. The sets and clothes are well done. The story though and the comedy, I have to say... the actual jokes she tells on stage were really poorly done. It's a herculean task though. Comedy from that era would have a hard time not feeling dated but the series's attempt to emulate it fails. Her story off stage is the main attraction anyway. There are a lot of convenient dodges like that she's a mother and that's barely in the equation. It would have been better if she didn't have any children. It would have made it a lot more believable. They kids are after thoughts and conveniently ignored with little to no consequences.Maybe they'll tackle that later. I honestly couldn't sit through the fast dialog and people trying to out clever one another. My wife is Jewish and thought the cliche's about Jewish life was pretty tedious. Expand

In the end the season wasn't as good as I hope it to be but there is enough to enjoy and I've gotta say, Midge is one of the most charming characters I've seen in years.
Kudos to Rachel Brosnahan, she was phenomenal.

But Sherman-Palladino is no one-trick pony, and with Mrs. Maisel she has succeeded in making a successful show about a Jewish comic who, while as witty as a Gilmore, is a distinct character in her own right. And instead of some cute teen to bounce things off of, Mrs. Maisels gets a surly manager, hilarious played by Alex Borstein, who deserves an Emmy.

It's a great series, funny and engaging with lovely period atmosphere. I'd say it's every bit as good as Gilmore and Bunheads, and my girlfriend, who wasn't a Gilmore fan but loves this, would say it's much better. Fingers crossed it continues for many years.

É a segunda série mais importante de 2017, e é a melhor série de comédia dos últimos 5 anos, batendo de frente com Veep.

Sets are amazing. So are clothes. And so are Susie's lines, which are the smartest, most surprising, and funniest in the show.

The problem is that, beyond Susie, we have a beautiful box without much inside. Like a lot of contemporary comedy, the self-consciousness is not quite smarmy, but close. "Look at us. Aren't we cute? Aren't we clever? Look at how clever we are." So

So rather than seeing characters actually _be_ in the situations, we are watching them watching themselves be there. Or we are watching them through the writer/director watching themselves make a show. It's hard to be entertained, beyond superficially, when what you're mainly watching are people showing you how entertaining they are.

It's kinda like the opening shtick of the would-be comedian doing someone else's shtick. One is left so hungry for the original, which was genuinely funny.

Another story of the great woman behind the male fraud. This alone makes sure that no critic can give it a thumbs down for fear of being accused of the greatest crime of our time... "not being a feminist".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I decided to watch the pilot because I was bored and "why not?" I then spent months with baited breath for them to finally get the full first season up. I was not disappointed! I am only upset that they didn't make more episodes LOL.

I love the characters, even Joel. Not a single one-dimension character among them. I love that Midge is discovering the realities of the patriarchal world in which we live. She is like a proto-Betty Friedan.

Marin Hinkle does a wonderful job portraying the mother whose daughter is forging a path different from what she expected/wanted for her. A very common theme in life I think. Such a change from her character on Two and a Half Men! What can one say about Tony Shalhoub? Just one more great character creation from him...he is always spot on.

And Alex Borstein? Is there anything she does that doesn't rock? I really love the scene in the kitchen at the Copa where she has to jump up, and then stand on a crate in order to see through the window on the door into the dining room. It's subtle/not subtle and hilarious.

I was particularly impressed with the scene in the last episode where Joel, who for some reason thinks Midge wanted a comedian for a husband (no, Joel, she *wanted* the life she mapped out, but it's all about you right?) sees Midge talking to Lenny Bruce, they comedian he'd taken her to see years before while they were in college. Midge and Lenny are friends while Joel as Susie says will end up just being that guy sitting in some loser bar regretting his choices.

I think this show only has a few seasons in it. Midge will become famous in short order and then what...but I think another couple of seasons will be doable.

A genuine spiritual successor to Gilmore Girls, the Palladino team creates a cast of characters each with their own shining personalities in a endearing late 1950's New York.

Rachel Brosnahan's lead performance as Midge is inspiring and entrancing. It's hard to not be immersed in her life as the story unfolds.

For fans of charming quick witted humour.

Must watch..terrific show!!! Saw Ms. Maisal over Memorial Day Weekend 2018 and the show is brilliant. A 50's housewife is more relevant today than when the show takes place. Rachel Brosnahan is great and earned a well deserved Golden Globe Award. The show is as much comedy as drama. I can't wait for season 2.

Fresh, charming, and hella sassy. Does a remarkably good job of balancing the brilliance of its leads with the disappointing attitudes of its era. Watch for the characters living their lives and showing us who they are.

PROS: several funny, compelling and layered characters; constantly well paced and absorbing storytelling, helped by Rachel Brosnahan's masterful performance; most jokes are timeless and will still work 100 years from now; detailed and beautiful photography, sets and wardrobes; catchy music; great season arc.
CONS: sometimes the outcome of a situation is a little too predictable.

On its face, this show is a solid new entry in the Sherman-Palladino pantheon of wisecracking heroines and the assorted people who love them. But The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is also a stellar showcase for a woman unleashing her full fury and potential in a way no one--least of all herself--saw coming, or will soon forget.
