At once true to action- show rules and properly parodic about the role of good guys in the late 20th century, The Marshal is an underrated pleasure.

That premise could make for a crisp and slick adventure hour; it did in the pilot. Already, though, Fahey's character is losing definition because of a string of unfocused scripts.

If you like that kind of Elmore-Leonard-wannabe dialogue, you'll probably like McBride a lot. [31 Jan 1995]

With no co-stars playing sidekicks, the pressure will be on Fahey to carry "The Marshal" alone. In the two preview episodes ABC provided, the low-key actor establishes an appealing balance of toughness and compassion. [31 Jan 1995]

Looks like a fun ride, a crime drama with more laughs than gun battles. [31 Jan 1995]

MacBride is the kind of intense, unpredictable, almost loopy kind of character that television audiences dote on. Think Bruce Willis in "Moonlighting."

The Marshal is retro action stuff, every week a different chase and capture, but the ungroomed MacBride has enough character - and so does the show - to distinguish it from TV's legion of mediocrities from Matlock to The Commish. [31 Jan 1995]
