Very strong start: Taut pacing, detailed characterizations, understated-yet-specific acting, and otherworldy special effects. I was one of those nerds who read everything, including the appendices and the Silmarillion, and I am very pleased.

Reminds me of the first time I saw the movies - stunning sets, intricate costumes, beautiful language and flow of dialogue, complex characters, and a fulfilling look at the world Tolkien created. Can't wait for the rest of the series!

I am a conservative and a Tolkien fan. I have seen hours of conservative video about how woke and bad this was going to be. I have seen hours of conservative video about how woke and bad this was going to be. I started the first episode chanting "No woke, no woke, no woke" and after 2 episodes I found nothing I would call woke. I fell into the fantasy by the second scene. IMO, if this wasn't so negatively hyped we would not see these ratings. Characters. The main character, Galadriel, is quickly unlikeable but not in a accidental way. She is obsessed with a coming darkness, and so isn't lovable and care free. The only mistake I can see so far is here trying to swim what would be the Atlantic ocean. The hobbits don't like what we expect, but they are just coming out, they are in hiding and in fear. They had their fancy clean homes in the shire because the rangers protected them. The dwarves were awesome. Music. Good, but not memorable. No memorable themes.

Dialogue. The dialogue is good, with the occasional poetic and dire lines which come off well and what you would expect in a Tolkien story. Woke. The only thing you could call woke is the fact that there are races you do not expect. That said, Tolkien built his world around our own, with Europe as middle earth. It is not a stretch to imagine our own races would be there as Tolkien included Arabic people in the world. Why wouldn't dwarves and elves go through whatever made the various races. The whole world loves Tolkien, and they want to see themselves in what is going on. I don't think it's being politically correct, I think it's just opening the world up for more people to put themselves into it. This review is my opinion based on the first 2 episodes.

TL;DR: hardly as “woke” as people make it out to be, and above all a good show that is worth watching

The series really lies somewhere between a 7 and an 8 (as of episode 2) but sadly the show has become the target of “anti-woke” review bombers with an alarming amount of time on their hands. I urge people to actually watch the show and form their own opinion outside of the online conservative echo chamber.

Any worries I had about the show were eased after the first episode, and the series shows tremendous promise, alongside stunning visuals and some great performances.

When studios take liberties with and even contradict the established lore, alarm bells understandably ring in many heads, including my own. But then I think about the Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War games, two outstanding games (microtransactions aside). I also take comfort in knowing that I can simply acknowledge and ignore any inconsistencies, because an interpretative spin-off is just that, and nothing more. The driving force behind these negative reviews is less the holding of Tolkien’s lore as sacred, and more an ideological disdain for anything perceived as overly PC. I do think there are many shows that do overdo it in this regard with little else to offer, but Rings of Power is not this. These characters happen to be ethnic minorities, but they are far from talentless actors shoehorned in to fit an agenda. For example, in his portrayal of the harfoot Sadoc Burrows, Lenny Henry perfectly encapsulates the beloved, humble disposition of the Hobbits we grew to adore over the course of Tolkien’s masterpiece.

In essence, this is a good but far from perfect show, which any sane person can see succeeds far more as a tribute to Tolkien’s beautiful world than a personal attack on conservatives. Watch and judge for yourself. Don’t get sucked in by the mob.

Good show, good pace so far. Not boringly action-packed like a marvel movie, and not a snore fest either. It's laying out the foundation of an interesting story. It doesn't show gore or sex for the sake of it. It looks and sounds great.

It has just been modernized!I really don't understand the negative reviews! I watched the first episode as a Lord of the Rings fan and am very pleased with how the character of the literature and especially the films has been preserved. It has just been modernized! If the series were just like the movies, it would be boring! I personally think that no matter what Amazon would have produced, people here would have complained and cried about it. That was clear in advance! And then the new variation in skin tones seems to be a main complaint. I'm losing my faith! Lord of the Rings is a work of fiction, detached from the bonds of the earth. Just because skin color is often tied to a specific culture in our world doesn't mean it has to be the case in this series. Humans are not bound to a particular cultures because of their physique, but because of history. The world of Lord of the Rings has a history of its own though, so why would there be **** racial segregation??? And just because it was more monotonous in the previous films and books, luckily it doesn't have to be the same in newer works! Art just keeps evolving!

If you can't handle that, at least don't try to spoil the fun of the series for others! Almost everything I see here is driven by hate. Keep the hate for yourself, I don't need it! I'm not a native English speaker, but I still hope I was able to make my point clear.

I’m happy as a Tolkien fan to have the chance of witnessing this new adaptation. It will have flaws (Jackson’s movies were perfect and flawed) they will deviate from the source material (Jackson’s movies did not follow the source material either) but it will be amazing, just as the Jackson trilogy. It’s pretty clear at this point that fans of Tolkien are rightfully upset by the total thrashing Amazon is giving the to the lore of Middle Earth.

The plot of the show makes absolutely no sense and when you go to actually watch it it really seems like it was made in such a way to only make the trailers looks “cool”.

Acting - awful, pacing - awful, plot - nonexistent. This is abhorrent to say the least.

At least here on Metacritic we can actually leave reviews. IMDB and Amazon are straight up scrubbing and banning bad reviews.

Even if you get suckered in by the “good reviews” you probably won’t even be able to make it to episode two.

-Cheers

You are pathetic people trying to impose their own abominations using Tolkien. Despite the hundreds of millions of dollars you've spent and the cutting-edge technology, you've done a terrible job. Because you're idiots devoid of art and logic.

I'm not going to write an essay on my though but I'd say one of the things that bugs me the most is the Elves, they just look wrong. They lack the dignity and ethereal glow that made them Elves. I realise that they don't have to do things the same way PJ did but beyond the point ears there's nothing differentiating them from men. I think the hair is the worst offender, too many modern hair cuts.

If they had called this Amazon’s dull fantasy story instead of lying about it being Tolkien, then it might be tolerable. But making a mockery of Tolkien’s work is unforgivable. Galadriel is one of my favorite characters from the books and what they have done to her is criminal. Guy-ladriel bears no resemblance to the character Tolkien wrote and was wonderfully portrayed by Cate Blanchett in the Jackson movies. This “version” is as snotty as the entitled white bread little girl playing the character. No acting going on. And the Elmer Fudd guy with pointy ears is pathetic. The scenes between Guy-ladriel and Elmer Fudd are a joke. The writing, characters and acting in this show are atrocious. The “hobbits” are stupid and obnoxious. The show would have been better without them. Most of the dialogue in the show is pathetic. It’s like something written for a high school freshmen dull writing class. To think thousands of Amazon workers had to piss in bottles so this travesty could be made. The show should not exist. It’s a waste of time and resources. Amazon could have done some good in the world with all the money they wasted on this puss filled pile of moldy garbage. Also, Amazon is a coward for blocking reviews. Expand

Super disappointed. Worse than I had anticipated. Not only a departure from the source material but also poorly acted and directed.

Even if we ignore the fact that this is a awful adaptation of Tolkien's work and try to review it has it's own thing the show is outright bad. The first two episodes were a snooze fest, the plot is paper thin and so are the characters. The casting is also not great, most of the time I felt like I was watching actors, not characters, which is to mean that their portrayal of said characters wasn't convincing.

Trying to inject modern themes in this world just doesn't work, it cheapens both the world and the characters, and it completely breaks immersion.

Princess Disa (I think is how you spell it?) And Durin I thought brought some much needed emotion to the show and actually made Elrond look better as a result. He was like a different person among the dwarves. I think the elves alone seem to be the worst part of the show and the reason everyone hates it during the first episode. The way they try to make every mundane conversation into poetry is extremely annoying. And then a lot of the things they say don't even make sense even metaphorically. A rock sees only downwards?? They would have been better off making elves communicate telepathically and just act with only body language except when communicating with other races. Or big brain idea... Have them speak ELVISH with subtitles. I'd be very surprised if episode 3 turned this series' fortunes around, as of right now, the majority of the plot seems like utter rubbish. Expand
