While the first few episodes are all about world building and character development, the show does suffer as it takes a while for it to find it's feet.
The last few episodes are where things really pick up and it's perfectly set up for a strong 2nd season.

Amazing visuals on many of Second Age locations! Delight to watch! Some of the characters are very well written characters (Adar, Halbrand) others are not. Some inconsistencies with the books (but that's expected nowadays).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The makers of this show should be proud of the world that they have brought to life. This show actually made a wonderful story out of the Silmarelleon, which was written more as a Bible and history book. For the haters of Galadriel: she was not born the mature woman that Cate Blanchett so excellently portrayed: she was a fiery, angry warrior, and it was only the events of the Long War that tempered her.

Also, how can people not love the Harfoots? They are very much the true ancestors of the Hobbits, and to see the origin story of Gandalf brought tears to my eyes ... This show actually explained why he adores the Hobbits so.

And, by the Gods! Sauron! His introduction/reveal was perfection.

All you haters, go suck a lemon. You have finally seen the history of Middle Earth brought to life and all that you can do is bring your hatred of feminists and "being Woke". Just ENJOY!

The series surprised me, it has strong acting, excellent writing, and interesting characters. There isn't any hidden agenda, just some strong female characters (That wouldn't have irked so many small minded people had these same characters been male).
Best thing about the show is that it doesn't try and pull off a Meme every week. It doesn't end with some shock for shock value or blood

Great production values, good performances, generally, good writing. Didn't really care for using the dwarves as comic relief, it jars with the tone of the rest of the story. this isn't The Hobbit and the worst of Jackson's work should be left behind.

As a fan of all Tolkiens writings its sad to see the condensed timelines and lore rewrites, but I understand the issues with obtaining the Silmarilion IP and the 3000 years the show needs to cover. I like the visuals and the acting, the cast is doing a good job with what they got but I cant give it 10/10 with the extreme lore inaccuracy.

Americans just want every episode to have action or to end in some cliffhanger. For a fantasy series to explore as much as possible of its world, it needs time. You can't expect the action of a 3hr movie in a 8+ hr series (or possibly more, if there are more seasons to come). I've watched foreign series from Asia that are 40 hour+ long and it takes a while for the story to develop and there may be a lot of miscellaneous mini-adventures or non-essential story lines mixed in, but in the end, things feel epic. As a fan of Tolkien's world, in writen and movie form, I really enjoy seeing Middle Earth during a time where the world has not fallen into pieces yet, the civilizations are still grand and majestic. And they really know how to show this off, as we have many moments where the show just presents us a new city and let's us take in their size and grandure. I also really like the overall plot. It's a smart approach, how they managed to put together different plot lines that are very character-focused and have secrets and question marks, even for fans of the book. And despite the extrem complexity of the books this show has been adapted from, they manage to break down the lore in a way that it is understandable and digestable for newcommers. And I really, really appreciate the fact, that they manage to keep the dialogues and characteres grounded and believable as part of their world. My major worry has been that they would try to make all the dialogues and characters "witty", a sickness that has grown over skript-writing ever since Marvel started to become the big player in franchise-production with their Superhero-characters. But no such thing! It's not, that the skript is entirely without humor or fun, it's just more low-key and fits the tone of the world really well. The weaker points of the show so far has been some of the characters. Three episodes in, and there is a huge gap between some of the more likable characters with a lot of personality and some more... let's generously call them "bland" characters. And given that, as I mentioned before, the individual plot lines are very character driven, it's a problem that some characters really are not up to the task yet to really carry their scenes. Another issue after three episodes is, that... not much seems to have happened so far. Given that these three episodes come together to a total of over 3 hours (or approximatelly the length of one of Peter Jackson's movies in the same world), it really doesn't feel like a whole lot has happened yet. I don't mind a slow burn, but if you have several plot lines running parallel, it would be good to have at least SOME of them be a bit differently paced. However, I have to say that I am pleasently surprised. It's a pretty damn good translation of Tolkien's world onto the screen and a solid attempt of creating an engaging narrative for a rather difficult part of the history of this universe. If it keeps going in this way, I will end up really enjoying myself. So far, I would absolutely recommend it! ! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think people are overreacting. I have gathered from the overwhelming amount of horrible reviews that 1. the acting is terrible, 2. the CGI is too good (Idk how that’s possible), 3. it’s too “woke,” and 4. the story is bad

Let me start with one. Yes, the acting is not perfect, an,d at times, it is slightly cringing. But the vast majority of the time, it’s good. Not amazing, but good. (remember, this is a tv show, not a movie) the main reason people believe the acting is trash is that they see one cringe moment and only view the acting from that.

Two. this CGI is impressive. The best CGI ever. But, I do feel, at times, it’s overproduced and gives the show a video game-like vibe. But I’ve only seen that happen once in the first two episodes.

Three. I can’t believe I even have to explain how a story works; it’s NOT REAL. It can be based on things, but to its core, it is FANTASY. FICTION. “OMG THERES A BLACK ELF???? WHAT EVER ARE WE GONING TO FO???” I can not stress this enough; it’s not real. So the only reason you can be mad at a black dwarf or black elf is that you are racist. Period. And I bet you if this show had only white characters and male leads, people would be raving about it. They would celebrate how impressive the CGI is, how the acting is spot on, and how the story feels like Tolkien wrote it himself.

Four. The story is terrible. There are two parts to this argument. One, it’s boring, and two, it’s unfaithful to its original work. I can only speak to the former because I am not fully immersed in Tolkien’s works. To say the story is boring is entirely wrong. It’s the first two episodes. It’s setting the stage. Nothing shocking is supposed to come from these; that happens at the end. Now for the side that argues it’s not faithful to Tolkien’s work, I would have to disagree somewhat. I don’t know much about middle earth, but I know that the general story is correct. But I see how some parts might have differed, but that’s what you’ll get when you make a show based on the work of a dead man. It’s not going to be perfect, so we have to hope that it’s at least accurate in some ways, and it is.

So basically, the show is getting way too much hate, and people need to learn that 1. you need to give it time, and 2. not everything will be as perfect as the books. That goes for anything that was initially a book made into a movie.

You can argue that liberties have been taken with the source material, but there isn't much source material for this to go off of, really. This is not like the LOTR or Hobbit movies, where there are novels that the books are based on (and PJ took greater liberties with those adaptations than we have seen so far with TROP). Black elves and dwarves? Who cares? It's fantasy, folks. Lighten up.

I watched the first episode as a Lord of the Rings fan and am very pleased with how the character of the literature and especially the films has been preserved. It has just been modernized! If the series were just like the movies, it would be boring! I personally think that no matter what Amazon would have produced, people here would have complained and cried about it. That was clear in advance! And then the new variation in skin tones seems to be a main complaint. I'm losing my faith! Lord of the Rings is a work of fiction, detached from the bonds of the earth. Just because skin color is often tied to a specific culture in our world doesn't mean it has to be the case in this series. Humans are not bound to a particular cultures because of their physique, but because of history. The world of Lord of the Rings has a history of its own though, so why would there be **** racial segregation??? And just because it was more monotonous in the previous films and books, luckily it doesn't have to be the same in newer works! Art just keeps evolving!

If you can't handle that, at least don't try to spoil the fun of the series for others! Almost everything I see here is driven by hate. Keep the hate for yourself, I don't need it!

Unfortunately, I'm not a native English speaker, but I still hope I was able to make my point clear.

News flash, Peter Jackson’s movies also didn’t follow the books completely and were sometimes drastically different, but you loved his adaptations, why?
The amount of racist and sexist reviews I’ve read makes me ashamed to call myself a fan. Never would I have imagined Tolkien fans would rival Star Wars fans, yet here we sit.
Out of the almost 2000 reviews, 1500 are 0,1,2 stars. Review bombing must stop. Wether you hate a show or love it, stop! Review bombing a show to force it to end is akin to cancel culture, and prominent review websites must, must do better to make sure not just anyone can review.
It is also very silly that I can rate the WHOLE season now, even though we’re only a quarter of the way through yet and the full season hasn’t been released. Must do better.

Anyway I give it an 8. Nori and Poppy are my favourites, then Durin and Disa. I can see the character development that will happen with Galadriel and I’m all for it.

When Adar informs Arondir in Episode 4 that he has been told many lies, some that “run so deep even the rocks and roads now believe them,” it is still a thrill. Tolkien succeeded in creating a mythic world, one that has now grown vast enough through acts of typological repetition and imitation to conquer television, too.

With war brewing and the forging of the rings seemingly still far off, the first half of The Rings of Power’s first season constitutes little more than stage-setting for the struggle to come. Given the lack of quests and central commanding figures, it often makes for less-than-gripping drama. However, given that there are four more seasons already planned, and potentially dozens of new characters to be introduced, the slow and throat-clearing build is possibly a good sign.
