Stick to the heart ofThis series has, so far, done what no other adaptation has been able to do...make a great adaptation. The formula has always been simple but apparently was overlooked by anyone ever adapting a video game. The formula? Stick to the heart of the story...and add depth. I don't know who these people are who desire a shot-by-shot, play-by-play of the game...but that isn't me, and I don't think it is the majority of people. What's the point? The game is already so good, why would you need a live-action version that is the same? They expanded on the world they had already built. Now...I'm going to say something that I find incredibly irritating, and it's about the fan base, which unfortunately includes a lot of ignorant, hateful, incredibly homophobic bigots who have nothing better to do than hate something because they've been taught to hate something and make sure that everyone knows they should hate it too. The fact that the homosexual tones of a specific character were overlooked in the game by many people, says a lot. And now the internet is flooded with a bunch of morons screaming they hate the show, they ruined it, they are pushing the LGBT agenda (there is no agenda...we just happen to exist...I don't know why that is so challenging to understand). Think about the reverse...what if someone said, "they have a straight relationship in this? No. I will not watch. Gross." Get over it please, you're missing out on a wonderful story and you clearly missed out on the actual heartline of the entire story of The Last of Us, which is about the heart...and love...not shoot em up bang bang kill violence. Please grow up. The show is a masterpiece so far. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really enjoying where this be going. I look forward to every episode. They're all so full of character, drama, and just enough action and scares to keep me guessing. The little incel boys review-bombing is hilarious, as well. I'm loving the direction, and, while I didn't like her initially, Bella Ramsey is killing it. Perfect Ellie vibes. Let's not forget Pedro Pascal, who is also crushing the reluctant dad role, let's be real. The latest episode has people struggling to cope, and it's fun watching them seethe. Oh and Anna Torv is wonderful on-screen, as always. Anyway Mr. Druckmann is also excellent. The man behind the game also working as director on the series? Top-notch. This is how you do an adaptation. It's not exactly like it, but it's more like the game than anything else would have been. Expand

ITaking a nuanced moment from the game and expanding it into a beautiful story expertly told was a pleasant surprise from the first two episodes that had me both emotionally devastated me but had me feeling positively euphoric at the end. I was already enjoying the series and the detail in following the plot line from the game was immaculate, even with side by side shots/dialogue which gave me goosebumps and has me playing the game all over again. I highly recommend the show if you're a fan of the games though it ses you need to have working brain cells to recognise that other love stories deserve to be told and can be told without the loss of plot. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to admit that I'm a bit of a sucker for an Apocalyptic "End Of The Word" extravaganza, whether it's big budget Hollywood blockbusters or low budget Romeroesque think pieces. I'm not familiar with the video game that this was based on other than I'm aware of its existence. This television show is damn good. The slow burn first episode that introduces us to the fungal foe which will decimate the human population wasn't particularly anything I haven't seen before. However my hopes were elevated by the execution of the main character's daughter. They continue to be elevated as the episodes keep coming along. The human story is very real, and sure, some of the topics have seemingly upset the InCel/Conservative Right viewers who have nothing better to do than whinge and sook and cry (seemingly the same reviewers who also hate any Superhero who is female... Says a lot about the mentality of the Isolated Ego than anything else). I hope The Last Of Us can keep rocking the Status Quo, keep pushing the story forward, and not kowtow to the vocal minority whose have very little relevance. Expand

This show is a f*ckin masterpiece. Period.

And trust me when I say that I rarely use the term "masterpiece" so as to maintain its significance.

To some, this may seem a bit boring and excessive at times but that would only be the case for those, who expect nothing more from a horror show except for action, zombies, shooting and things like that.
Yes, if you are expecting continuous intense action sequences, savage moments, cold blooded dialogues and things like that, I am sorry to say that this show is not for you and you are bound to be disappointed with it.

Now that we have cleared the negative immature audience out of the scenario, let's talk about the actual show and how perfect it really is.

To me, this show is a love story, the love story of two best friends, the love story of a father and a daughter, the love story of humans with themselves.
But also, at the same time, to me, this show is an eye-opener too. It acknowledges the misconceptions, the dark side, the hate, the agony, the real emotions of humanity and the extent of inhumanity people are willing to go to when it comes to themselves. To me, this is a story of ignorance, stupidity, selfishness and demonism.
To me, this is a show about every emotion that humanity has ever experienced and will experience. To me, this show is a story of everything.

So, any other person out there like me, who is willing to take out some time, think about what's really happening, appreciate the depth of the show and is patient enough to enjoy the actual beauty of this show, this show is a f*ckin masterpiece.

Trust me when I say that this is not just a show. This is a once in a lifetime experience, which you'll definitely never forget for the rest of your lives. This show is gonna be engraved in your minds like it has been in mine for more than 7 years.

This show will teach you dozens of things, make you feel emotions you never felt before and clear many misconceptions of yours about how the society really works.
But all this works only if you are patient enough. So, if you've got patience, this is and always will be A F*CKIN MASTERPIECE.

I'm turned off by political allegory and absolutely allergic to woke allegory in media. So believe me when I say that if you are seeing woke allegory in this show you may want to check and make sure you're not the brainwashed one. This show features excellent storytelling, excellent character driven narratives, it remains wholly devoted to it's internal logics. In short, it's not woke propaganda, its genuinely good storytelling. The writers may not share your values but they are trying to entertain you first. There aren't any MEANINGFUL identity swaps or bait and switches (as of episode 3). A family in Boston can believably be of any mix of races. This isn't middle earth. It's 1995 or whatever Boston. It doesn't matter if his wife was White or Asian or Black. The white characters and male characters aren't all bad here. Men are physically stronger than women in this show. The girl lead does a fantastic job and looks like a real person. She's not "ugly" at all she's talented as hell - especially for a young actor. I'm not seeing woke allegory. What I'm seeing here, in the negs, is people who are oversensitive (understandably) about being preached too by leftist virtue signaling.

Please let's agree that this show is how leftist writers SHOULD be writing. They're going to be left leaning, inclusive etc. But this team is putting the story first second and third . Whether you agree with their views we should be able to agree that great art is great art. Episode 3 WAS excellent by any sane measure. If you don't see that then I'm afraid you may have become woke's opposite evil. Why was it bad? If you think it was bad simply because the characters were gay then you are in the wrong. Woke views are bad when they lead to woke allegory which is bad WHEN ITS BAD - whenever it comes before storytelling. It doesn't here. There's no preaching. Nobody marginalizes victimizes or shames the men. There's no warping of reality or history to magnify their repression. They could be a straight couple just as easily and the episode would have worked fine. So the hate just grinds me a bit. I'm usually on the skeptical side but this was great work and top tier entertainment. The only thing keeping this show from being a ten is that zombie stuff feels tired. Even if it's caused by mushrooms. Otherwise perfect show.

He looked the part, ruggedly handsome, great beard...when Pedro Pascal was cast, I thought okay. We'll see. After the first episode, Pascal OWNS the role. He brings a world-weary soul to the character (it's in his eyes). Bella Ramsey is introduced as Ellie, and she shines in her brief scenes. The first episode cleverly explains the fungal "virus " and how it would affect the host via a old televised science talk show (with John Hannah and Bighead from Silicon Valley). We're then introduced to Joel and his family on what would be the last day of normalcy. Scenes mirror and mimic the dialogue of the game, but since the game was so cinematic to begin with, it all fits naturally. BTW, for those shouting WOKE because of casting decisions or complaining about Bill and Frank's relationship (hinted at in the game, but altered and fleshed out), need to grow the eff up. Expand

Great show so far! It has captured the emotional weight of the apocalyptic scenario in a way that The Walking Dead never really did. It stays true to the game while expanding on individual character back stories in a beautiful way.

As a huge fan of The Last of Us Part 1, I had high expectations for this show, and most, if not all, were met. First and foremost, Pedro Pascal(Joel) and Bella Ramsey(Ellie) are phenomenal. And I can't wait to see their relationship grow throughout the series. To all the people who disagree with the race swap, deal with it, because right now, it has no effect on how that character acts. There are a few minor issues with the editing choices, and with one particular scene where a reveal happens and there isn't a lot of reaction to that reveal. But other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, and I can't wait to see more.

I'm a big fan of the Last of Us games, I've played Part I, Left Behind and Part II. In my opinion, these belong to the best stories ever told in video games, next to Life Is Strange and God of War. The adaption is very faithful, it follows the games in a good way and tells a few side stories apart from the games. They changed the whole story of Frank and Bill, but the core stays the same, and I'm pretty sure, it fits better in a TV-format this way. The CGI and practical effects are extraordinary, and they are looking great. The production value is just astounding. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are amazing as well. I liked them already in Game of Thrones, but this… Wow. My only problem with the show is the pacing. The most dialogues are very well written, but they are just too long. There are a action sequences, but a few more would have been great. I think the amount of infected was kinda small, and I hope they change this in Season 2. But overall this was one of the greatest video game adaption I've ever seen, next to the Cuphead Show and Cyberpunk Edgerunners. I'm looking forward to Season 2. Expand

Watching Episode 1 on our OLED in Dolby Vision & ATMOS Surround was nothing short of stunning…FULL STOP! An immersive and thrilling viewing experience.

Based only on the pilot episode, this is easily one of the best shows from HBO - an outfit not short on great television - in a very, very long time. HBO’s deep pockets pay off handsomely here resulting in outstanding production values, gritty sets and seamless CGI blending. Casting is flawless, and acting across the board was nothing short of stellar. Standouts include Pascal, Ramsey, Torv and Ms. Parker.

Don’t write it off as “ just another zombie show “; it’s so much more. While the show-runners don’t miss a chance to show us fungi infected horrors, the Pilot makes crystal clear it is the living - not the living dead - our heroes need fear. Like the earliest episodes of TWD, the humanity shines through. The Pilot accomplished something in ~90 minutes most shows can’t throughout their entire run: I CARE about these characters!! Sundays cannot come fast enough for this viewer! HBO’s The Last of Us is why the term “ Appointment Viewing “ exists. Miss this at your peril.

I originally gave it like a 9.5/10 when it came out. One of the best stories told and executed that I've seen in a game since Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, on ps2, my previous favorite game. (I was a 90's kid, so I go back to ps1 and ps2 for my fav games, yikes I'm **** old.. ..lol). Thought this show does a whole lot of the original game justice, (mostly). 2nd, let's address "the Pink elephant in the room". The lack of action without Runners, Stalkers and Clickers, not being apart of the danger throughout Joel & Ellie's traversing across the U.S. in the show. This was an early decision that Masion and Druckman clearly made, in hind sight now I see looking back. That IS disappointing. That being said, the writing, acting and production design are remarkably well done. I would say excellent mostly. Pascal Inhabits the soul and body of Joel very, very well. I would even say this interpretation and version of Joel, while at first glance may seem tame or soft, is actually far far- more haunted, disturbed and therefore compelling. I learned along time ago that when you write/create a story you want to tell, that the story is never in service of the characters, but that the characters are there to always serve the story. Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, I'll admit initially, she didn't look like her and I thought she was too angry and overly reaching with her aggression early on in the show, even though I know she had serious trust issues since everyone dies or abandons her, I get it.. But then I watched Episode 5.. The end of that..Oooof. Hold'n back some man fuk'n tears there with Henry and Sam.. btw those two actors..Perfect performances as brothers. Chef's kiss*. Extremely powerful. And I saw what Bella did acting-wise in that episode and I was like, "Yep she's earned my respect now with that acting!" The writing is top notch. Places re created were shot on real locations for a lot of the show. Of course the composer from the games came and was hired on for the music for the show as well, which was great. I'll stop here, but like I said, this I felt might be the best adapted show from a game to date. And let's face it, HBO always brings that HBO quality, even if you disagree with some of the decisions they made. For me, I am very Impressed and mostly pleased minus the lack of clickers - I'm only grading this show based on what they put into the adaptation, not what was left out. So for that reason it is a 9/10. Expand

Yes, at the beginning I had some complaints about the casting, but over time you get used to these actors, and it's an adaptation, not a casting. The series tells some moments in different ways, sometimes in favor, sometimes not, but it's not bad, on the contrary, it makes it more interesting. All the episodes (except the third one) are just great, I watched them in one breath. And as for the third episode...., well, it happens, the main thing is that it didn't hurt the other episodes of the series. In my opinion, this is the best adaptation of not only the game, but also the best adaptation of all adaptations of books, games, and other things. I recommend it to fans of the game of the same name, and those who have never heard of the game will like it even more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I should drop a 10 just to rebalance all the homofobic hate on episode 3, but i'll keep this honest and i'll drop my honest vote, a 9. Some changes and cuts were stupid and/or pointless, other changes and addings were good and very much on point, and overall the series is just great. As someone who played both games: episode1: making an airplane nearly kill sarah/joel/tommy was very...american? not needed, i guess it was a way to make a surprise to us gamers (with the car that was supposed to hit them stopping in time) but...that was too much. also, the first kill we see by joel was very tense and brutal in the game, in the series it was almost a comic thing (no gunshot, the infected first trips into the door and then get up very quickly because, i guess, jumpscare in 2023 are still a thing). meh.

episode 2: clickers were perfect, bonus points for showing tess's death since it was different than the game and it was very disgusting.

episode 3: ...i'm a straight guy and i've enjoyed SO much. Yes you don't have to be gay to enjoy a very good love story about...two persons. who cares if they are both men, both women, a man and a woman, an alien and a chair, if it's a good love story, it's still good even if it's not relatable episode 4: kinda boring but ok. episode 5: another amazing episode, after the third one. joel killing the sniper was not a random moment like in the game but a meaningful one, sam and henry were perfect and the bloater was super good to see. episode 6: the one i hated the most, probably. i have no problem with black/asian washing usually,i didn't even care about sarah for example, but tommy and maria? c'mon. tommy is supposed to be at least the same ethnicity. also, i don't know if i'm happy to see a joel that is struggling with anxiety and depression. TloU (druckman) has its agenda and this, not episode 3, but this, felt very much like a way to make feel rapresent anyone, since in the game there was no character with mental health problems. It is realistic that joel struggle with those problems after the death of sarah and tess? Yes. It is true to the real joel, that was basically a tough and badass guy? No, sorry. Episode 7: should've been shorter, especially after i've saw episode 8 and 9, i thought this should've last only half an hour at best. the mortal kombat arcade scene in the game was way better. Episode 8: Almost perfect, amazing that they left cannibalism and pedophiles in a mainstream series like this one. The only complain i have is that joel path true the city felt rushed and the reunion with Ellie didn't felt like a miracle like it was in the game Episode 9: Almost perfect again, again is just a thing about timing, everything felt really really fast and the slow-mo scene of joel killing everyone was a bit cringy. But they didn't even change a single second of the last 5 minutes so...great. Waiting for season 2, which will probably have a 2.5 metacritic score due to all the lesbians/trans/genderfluid/etc stuff which stops little minded to people from enjoy a beatiful story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you want the show to follow the games narrative to a tee, you'll be mildly disappointed. If you allow the writers to have some flexibility on a story that was told 10 years ago and enable them to tell their own story whilst faithfully following the source material then you'll love it.

It was bombarded with negative reviews for next to no reason (mostly due to Episode 3). If you're not close-minded or in my personal opinion, an idiot. You'll enjoy this episode. It's my favourite episode if I'm honest. It has nothing to do with it's LGBTQ themes or anything sexual in that sense. It's just a great episode with characters that are writen well. Int this one episode, I cared more about Bill and Frank than I did most of the other characters in the show.

Other than Sarah's skin color I feel they got all the important stuff right so far. Sarah still seemed very much like the original Sarah so it didn't bother me much. Excellent casting choices so far. 10/10 for episode 1. Will update as new episodes come in.

Update after episode 3: Episode 2 was awesome and I think I liked it even more than the first episode, 10/10. Unfortunately episode 3 was a real stinker. If I wanted to watch a gay romance I would watch one. I thought I was watching a post apocalyptic survival show based on the video game. The only scenes in episode 3 that I enjoyed were the ones without Bill in it. If I weren't a big fan of the game I would've not been able to finish this episode. I support gays and lesbians I just have no interest in watching them. If I were watching a pop music show I'd be upset if all of a sudden an episode shows up that is mostly about rap. I'm so upset and I can't give this garbage episode anything more than a 1/10. That brings down my average score for this show to a 70. I still have hope the rest of the show will be good, keep Bill away please.

update after ep 4: The show fortunately went back on track. This one felt very short but it's my favorite so far we get a lot of great quality time between Joel and Ellie. An interesting villain appears and I hope we learn more about her in the next episode and how she got into her position. Something scary happens at the end but I can't spoil it, excited for the next episode. 10/10

update after episode 5: Incredible episode easily the best one so far in my opinion. There were a few minor changes but I actually like how the show did it better than the game. 10/10

The first two episodes were especially faithful to the source material which was refreshing to see. Pascal does a great job as Joel (Ramsey less so as Ellie, but it's more than good enough). The atmosphere was captured so well, like the terror of escaping from their home in Texas to the despair of living in the Boston QZ. And the appearance and behavior of the clickers - very impressive. Episode 3 was a bit of an unexpected turn. To be honest, I found the story quite touching (albeit a little sappy) and well acted, as this part was not focused on in the game at all. If they were going to dedicate the vast majority of the episode to Bill and Frank's story, I would've preferred that they not have them fall in love within an hour of meeting each other. Given the way Bill's character is - a conservative survivalist and loner - why not show more of how Frank is able to soften his heart? Seems like a better use of time than the strawberry scene. The effect Frank had on Bill is obviously meant to reflect on how Ellie might change Joel, who himself is a hardened and unemotional man who doesn't trust anyone. Did the main plot need to be paused for this? Absolutely not. Bill and Frank died in the same episode they were introduced; they are not important despite the writers desperately wanting us to think so. If anything, leaving one of them alive to be able to speak to Joel in person may have left just as much of an impact. And so, despite being well crafted and sincere, there is a time and a place for everything. Dismissing any criticism of this episode as simple bigotry and homophobia is dishonest and ignorant. (Frank's character being a woman would not have made the length and pacing of this segment any less misplaced.) The mature thing to do would be to consider how taking a creative risk may not pay off to a sector of the audience. Deviating from the source material without improving the story in a significant way will often be unwelcomed. Then again, if the goal was to please the critics, whose credibility in the video game world is almost nonexistent, then mission accomplished. But to those who feel some allegiance to the source material and are desperately looking for a good video game to TV adaptation, there is understandable reason for concern. The legacy of a TV show is never set by professional critics, try as hard as they may. Overall I do recommend this show. It is restrained, faithful to the source for the most part, and rather well acted. It is certainly not a 0 and certainly not a 10. It is far from becoming a farce like the The Witcher, but nonetheless a reminder that video games often have more artistic merit than the TV shows adapted from them. Expand

As a fan of the first game this adaptation is really fateful to the source material, they changed some scenes and retcon some game lore, but it can stand alone as its own.

It never detracts from the story or feels tacked on. It's clearly made with lots of love and passion. Although, the impact is dampened by the fact that I've experienced it all before from the video game. Expand
