Forte--either by design all along or in reaction to Season 1 responses--consciously injects what was missing from Season 1 into the first two episodes of Season 2, but he does so without upsetting an alluring, already-established tone and world.

Through the first hour of the new season, chaos and character relationships continue to be The Last Man on Earth’s areas of expertise.

I almost thought they killed off the rest of the cast and they were ready to re-tool, but NOPE. It's okay to have the women sleep with the same guy as long as it's Boris Kodjoe, no wonder it's so easy for guys like him to be players. I know tv is dominated by a woman audience, but guys need sitcoms that cater to them. It's not like the women wouldn't have run his new society anyway as more and more women come around and they start having Original Phil's children. Him being the ONLY MAN ON EARTH with dozens of women (aka balls and chains) around with babies who need men to reach stuff off the high shelves and open jars and take out the trash, it would introduce it's own kind of comedy, even though he gets to sleep with all these women. Maybe in a 3rd or 4th season of repopulating the Earth they could have introduced one other man. Until they stop making Original Phil the bad guy, I'm done watching AGAIN. Bearded Phil is the guy I bonded with in the first few episodes and I'll never treat him as the bad guy in my mind. Full Review »

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Man, this is leagues ahead of the cringefest that Season 1 was. The characters develop, everyone is not an insufferable prick or a dull plot device anymore.

The quality has soared through the roofs and the series has completely transformed! I can't believe this is the same show where a season ago the main plot was "Phil trying to get laid by being a dick and failing every time". They've finally moved past that and now it is actually a show about the last people on Earth.

I can't believe I now love and care about characters like Gail, Todd, Melissa, Phil 2.0 who I previously found boring and irrelevant. Phil (Tandy) is still a bit cringey even though he's not a dick anymore, but this time it's actually funny! The humour is miles ahead of Season 1 and I'm actually laughing out loud instead of painfully cringing. That moment where they dig up Gordon's body and then immediately rush him back in the grave was hilarious.

I also love the dramatic turn this show took. Plots are advancing forward and that mid-season finale where Mike is falling through the skies while Phil 2.0 is dying on the bed was intense and emotional as farts! I never would've believed a show like this could create so much tension and have me on my toes like that.
