I find the second season to be just as good as the first season, and the fact that I already know the characters makes this an easy show to stick with. The story progresses nicely and the action and production values are terrific. This is no Game of Thrones, but every bit as enjoyable as Vikings on the History Channel.

Season 2 has been a real growth for this series. I very much enjoyed season 1, but the second season has upped the ante on all fronts. It astonishes me that fans of Vikings and Game of Thrones are not flocking to this series for it has strong characters, engaging and well written plots and an authenticity that other shows lack.

Plus it seems largely unaffected by contemporary notions of cultural marxism and SJW crusading... perhaps this is why the critics are ignoring it.
Do yourself a favor - get lost in the Last Kingdom.

This show deserves a lot more attention than it is getting. I can't remember how I got started watching it, but I was hooked from the beginning. The series follows Uhtred, a Saxon boy who is kidnapped by Danes early in his life and raised by them. As a young adult his Dane family is killed by a traitor, and so the journey begins for revenge. Without spoiling anything, it can be said that Uhtred's soul belongs to both Dane and Saxon, which is cause for some very interesting plot weavings. And the characters that follow him, both good and evil, are some you care about. Either you want them to succeed, or you want them to perish. They are so well fleshed out that you can't help but feel their joy, pains and hardships throughout.

The show is very well put together. The acting is top notch. The scenery, locales, costumes, effects... Everything is done so well! I can't praise it enough.

For fans of Vikings, this show is for you!

Great entertainment! The character development is excellent as we see Uhtred mature and Alfred become more pious. I think season 2 is a bit better than season 1 - they've found their footing. It is a shame that both seasons have only 8 episodes; the story is being rushed a bit, but season 3 will have 10 episodes. It's about time they spent a little more money on this gem of a series. If anything was disappointing in season 2 it was the casting of Gisela. Peri Baumeister is a lovely actor, but she and Dreymon have zero on-sreen chemistry. I've read all 10 books and I have no problem with the TV series deviating, and neither does the author of the books, Bernard Cornwell. I enjoy both for what they are. I also don't know why people compare this TV series with Game of Thrones, which I personally don't like. They are two different genres so it is like comparing apples with oranges. In addition, GoT has 3 times the budget. If TLK got the same number of episodes and the same budget, this series would be a grand slam. I find the viewer ratings on this site to be quite low compared to other sites. For example, Rotten Tomatoes viewer rating for season 2 is 9.6, which I think better depicts how the show is doing. I haven't talked to anyone who has watched TLK give it anything but high marks. Expand

Season 2 was a downer, especially the first stupid four episodes. However it improved as it went on. It seemed the original success caught the production team by surprise and couldn't put together a script worthy of Season 1. Too bad.

I adored season one and so was anxious to see season 2. It not only did not disappoint, but it was also thrilling and more than I expected. Some new characters expertly acted and the tension level higher though I did not think it possible. Every scene pulls you in, there is no down or slow times. Every actor gives his all, the sets and camera angles are perfect. I cannot wait for season three.

I agree with GRR Martin. It's a fantastic show and certainly better than what Game of Thrones has become. Best show I have watched this year so far.
Can't wait for a third season. There is still much to do for Uthred.

Glad to see that this season was stronger than the first one!

No more extras holding pitchforks for weapons and Uthred's character development is really welcomed. The only thing this show lacks, is more screentime. Pacing of episodes often feels awkward. I understand they are trying fit two books per season, but the show would really do well if it paced slower, or if scenes

Still: good writing 90% of the time, and there are a lot of scenes that are absolutely great to watch!

All I have to say is WOW! That was amazing TV! I really didn't enjoy the season 1 but I'm so glad I stuck with it until now. This season fixed all my issues with the first. Uhtred is likable here and is a badass warrior. The fights became more epic and large in scale, which just adds to the excitement. This was an amazing season and I hope they can make the next one just as good if not better!

The Last Kingdom Season 2 continues some time after season 1. Wessex is expanding its influence to other kingdoms such as Northumbria and Mercia, with Uthred being in the middle of it.

Season 2 is about two separate stories. The first sees a new king rising in Northumbria, creating an opportunity for Uthred and Ragnar to avenge their father. The second story is about fighting the Viking brothers Erik and Sigefrid, and making an alliance with Mercia. While these stories both build upon the story of Uthred and Alfred, they don't reach the quality of the first season. Nonetheless, the writing is excellent.

The Last Kingdom has a thing for introducing small side-characters, and then having them conveniently die right before the end of the season. The same is to be said for enemy lords and antagonists who rarely survive the season. It feels a bit tacky, as sometimes a cliffhanger is positive.

Main characters have fallen to the 'Big things happened off-screen' virus, as they have gotten new character traits in between seasons. Alfred has doubled down on being a tunnel visioned Christian, who suddenly distrusts Uthred even though Wessex was saved thanks to him. Odda has become a socialist alcoholic, and has become more like Uthred. These changes feel a bit contrived at times.

Season 2 of The Last Kingdom has great fights, uses practical effects instead of CGI, builds upon existing characters and sets up the conflict for the next season(s). It is excellent to watch, and i give it a 8/10.

Great follow up to a awesome first season, not as serious as a show like Vikings (which is great) but very entertaining in its own right.
