Very cool show, not too serious, but a fun watch. Kind of like supernatural, the characters are awesome and the main story is cool, but there is a lot of fluff there.

Of particular interest is the anthropological aspect of the mixing of different ethnic groups, a very relevant topic to today's Europe.
Secondly, the acting was excellent. The most interesting and riveting character is Alfred, the King of Wessex; the actor in that role delivers a masterful performance. The lead character is also far more charismatic and believable than any John Snow plus the female actresses have better material to work with than that pathetic wet-dream of a show, Game of Thrones.
Minus point for the cinematography and production though. It's not Hollywood sleek

Excellent show with plenty of enjoyable stories, characters and history. If you like Vikings, you'll like this show. Characters are well build, and the action is gruesome. It does sometimes suffer from a 'One man army complex' but is still fun to watch

Starting with the flaws. Uhtred the main character has got to be the luckiest man on the planet due to his many near death encounters and escaping unscathed. Uhtred is also a frustrating character due to his poor decision making HOWEVER this does play into the story so please don't let this be a turn off from the show. It makes up for it watching Uhtred grow.
The biggest issue I have with this show is it's ability to not hold onto any characters and just killing them off left in right. It feels like the show is in a rush to tie loose ends to quickly. Granted do they get much better reducing this toward the later seasons.
The final flaws are just some noticeable bad writing with scenes and bad attire for certain circumstances.

The good things in the show is that it tells a great story. The plot in this show is wonderful. The characters that are lucky enough to make it through a season develop wonderfully. The Danish actors do wonderfully with their character's humorous and brutal nature. The show has some wonderful scenes that are dramatic or action filled. Battles and duels are well done. The show in general is just great looking back on it.
I'd say the worse thing about this show is that for whatever reason viewers just can't really appreciate what is happening during the moment. During some scenes I remember thinking this is so dumb, but looking back I think man that was a really really good scene.
To a new viewer i'd say this. This show has flaws and can be frustrating, but go in with an open mind. After watching it i'm very pleased.

I can't recall a show where every single character adds something to the overarching story and plot. I loved seasons 1 and 2 but season 3 has taken it to another level while still keeping it's feet on the ground. Uhtred has to be one of the most likable protagonists in modern TV. Long may this show continue with season 4 and 5.

Having binge watched 9 out of 10 episodes on Netflix it then took a few days to watch the last episode knowing that once watched there would be no more for another year. I simply love this show. If Netflix cancels this show, I will be extremely upset and may even cancel my sub. Right now, it is one of the only reasons I still have Netflix, that's how good it is. I don't write reviews for TV shows. Ever. So for me to take the time out to write a positive review for this show, is saying something. Love it. Absolutely love it. Well done to the cast and crew of this masterpiece and that is exactly what it is to me. A true masterpiece and work of art.

The last kingdoms gems are not only its beautiful and cinematic shots which are in fact always a treat to stale eyes but the characters along with the soundtrack. The soundtrack alone is beautiful as it fits right in with the incredibly fresh setting and carefully chosen time period while giving a beautiful take on the culture. The Celtic music is just beautiful and something that I would definitely take up listening to myself. The main character utred is such a remarkable character who you not only follow on an adventure but you yourself will find yourself on an emotional journey. At times you are crying with Utred and surprisingly a lot of the times you despise him yelling at the screen asking what on earth he is doing and why. I myself cannot deliver justice to this show, I truly do not know how to describe it. Its such a breath of fresh air from all of the mediocre and lazily written shows out there which are good but not GREAT. This show will have you entertained but it will leave you with something all those other shows will never deliver and that is an experience.

The Last Kingdom is an incredibly unique and addicting show! Heed my advice, do yourself a favor and watch it, you will not be disappointed.

Season 1 was pretty darn good. My only complaint would be that having only 8 episodes rushes the story. I'm also surprised that people think the TV series should follow the books more closely. As the author of the books, Bernard Cornwell, basically stated they don't write novels and he doesn't write TV scripts. He is happy with the series and has commended them for doing a great job. I've read all 10 books and yes, the series deviates from them, but so what? The novels are a good read and the TV series is great entertainment. Season 2 has already aired and I would rate it a 9.5. The TV series is getting better as it rolls along and I'm looking forward to season 3, which will have 10 episodes. It's about time they give the story the time it needs to be told well. Expand

From beginning to end, the first season held me captive. Only just started season 2. So far, just as good. The whole series has sparked in me an interest in the actual historical period.

Comparisons made to the Game of Thrones series that I have read that are floating around the internet are absurd. Comparing historical drama with fantasy fiction is comparing apples to oranges.

A poorman's show with the typical unkempt dirty medieval people wearing stuff like skins on their shoulders. There is an interesting video of Lindybeige about this kind of thing. People were not dirty or wore skins on their shoulders. It reminds me of Monty Python. It was parody for them, the parody has become the norm.

The show would be okay if it were not for the unsympathetic protagonist. He is a selfserving nihilist, a liar, a thief, murderer and what not. I don't care for him, his plight and his motivations. He just wants one thing wealth, which means lands. He became totally repugnant when he killed a man for felling and selling one of his trees. Perhaps the guy stole from him, but just killing him outright made him a total ass.
Otherwise there is nobody else to root for. King Alfred is too aloof to connect to, being a king even in private. I still like the actor, but why not give him more of a normal personality?
Some engagement comes from the women, who are actually the more likable and sensible people. Probably that is more historical. :P
I found few people to like not caring for anyone. Well, perhaps for the Older Odda. He seemed to be a noble sort.
A remark should be made for the way sex is portrayed in this series. Can it become even more gross and in your face disgusting than in this series?

The wrap up is that the most positive thing is that I might use this to read up a bit about this timeperiod and perhaps read Cornwell's books. I read his Arthur books and those were interesting as they gave a total new spin on the story. Perhaps it is not strange that he writes about Alfred and his timeperiod: there are many similarities.

I'd argue that I enjoy this show more than I do Game Of Thrones. Sure the production value is smaller, but I can easily get past that because its story is more focused. The intrigue is neatly strung together and the characters are very well developed. It's a guilty pleasure for sure and I can't wait for season 3.
