Both a decadent summit of summertime reality soaps and a glowing ill omen of spiritual rot. ... The new show retains the original’s Warholian purity of inaction and its languid tension: nothing much happens, and it is not happening at a soothing pace, under a glazy gaze.

I guess what’s so dismaying about New Beginnings is the watching of something that doesn’t understand itself, doesn’t seem to know what made it good and almost worthy to begin with. I wonder what LC thinks about it, if she’s watched. Maybe she hasn’t. Maybe she’s content in all her growth since, everything written after. I hope to feel that same peace when, next Monday night, I tune in to something else.

Dull. ... Everything is fake, except for the part where everyone really is hustling. ... When you think about what’s driving The Hills, its emptiness becomes almost hilarious.

In the absence of Conrad as a human grounding agent, the show burbles over only with supplicants trying to get what little Pratt and Montag still have. ... “New Beginnings” feels, if not like an endpoint, at least like the middle of a journey that it’d have been kinder to spare everyone involved. Its unkindness extends to a viewership that has many options for spare and bland inhumanity elsewhere.
