The Greatest Show Never Made is a fun docuseries about a scam that could only have seemed to happen in 2002, at the start of the reality TV frenzy.
-
The whole documentary is suffused with several rare things; gentleness, consideration and maybe even forgiveness. It is, altogether, rather wonderful.

The Greatest Show Never Made isn’t interested in being just another scammer doc. Rather, it’s a study of human foibles and how our need to be seen as special and important can be our downfall. Riveting, at times unbelievable and ultimately hopeful, it’s one of the most bizarre yet optimistic documentaries I’ve ever seen.

Where the series falls flat is in its decision to intersperse the (interesting) archive and interviews with incoherent dramatic reconstruction, set against grating retro lighting and a horror-movie soundtrack. A story this juicy doesn't need the frills.
