    What remains at its core, though, is the gentle drama, featuring people with skill, passion and a generosity towards their fellow competitors that rarely comes across as confected. There is scant swagger or boasting, just a little bit of cheek.

    With its bloody bunting soaring into view within seconds, the opening episode of the year proves as insipid as ever. Rest assured, Bake Off’s three-challenge format remains (incorrigibly) intact. That’s right, it’s the same programme over and over again.
