It's The Good Place, Not The Great Place. Sorry, that was terrible. Its a show that is relatively high concept, a spin on the cliche afterlife comedy/drama, and is stuffed with fun characters so you aren't allowed to get too bored. The actingIt's The Good Place, Not The Great Place. Sorry, that was terrible. Its a show that is relatively high concept, a spin on the cliche afterlife comedy/drama, and is stuffed with fun characters so you aren't allowed to get too bored. The acting is wonderful! The plots are okay, often putting themselves in corners they have to 'joke' their way out of, but it's a 20 minute sitcom, not a prestige drama, so it's fine. Overall I think people give this show much more credit than it deserves, and I'm glad something like this exists, because maybe we can see a show that does what it was trying to do better. I hated the music. Maybe because it's 4 second theme truly mirrored the show - not enough to elicit emotion, but intriguing enough to keep my attention. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to start by saying that this show isn't funny, it shouldn't be labeled a comedy. I mean, I think I laughed out loud maximum 5 times in the 50 chapters, it's comedy attempts are completely lame. Being that said, I believe this is the most original and contemporary take on the afterlife ever.
I like the way they hide the fact that the show is actually about moral philosophy, and they do it exquisitely, as you will never feel overwhelmed by philosophical theory, but rather they place the questions in a very subtle manner. I love the character development, as it never goes off the rails to be unbearably cheesy neither complicated to make them exhausting.
This show makes you think, and that is something current shows will never do. I didn't noticed that I did got attached to the characters, until I saw the finale, when I didn't want this show to end, and I gotta say it did in a magnificent way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The good Place is a series with a lot of things into it: philosophy, romance, comedy. The story it's interesting overall but it get boring sometimes, jokes are sometimes on a 5th grade level and just not funny at all, repetitive and just boring. But the ideia overal is very good, the message is being passed and at the end we know that there's no villains in this story, just people there to learn. The ideia of forever it's boring to everyone who actually thinks about it and we all know that, the series it's about life and getting through, knowing that's going to end and that's fine about it, when we're ready. Overall, bad jokes for the most part and an evenly distributed story events that makes it boring at some points, but the story it's still good and the message it's still there and it is an important one, wich makes it a good and remarkable show. Their interpretation of what the afterlife looks and feels like with magically appearing objects and sunshine was amazing in execution and super creative. Although the writing is creative and hilarious, some writing did leave me unsatisfied and hindered my ability to suspend my disbelief. For example, while some wouldn't notice the accuracy of their philosophical explanations, I unfortunately felt uneasy with some of their explanations that made the plot feel wobbly. Their explanation of predetermination was completely false, and in the end I could not accept the ending as it depended on the explanation of predeterminism- not to mention the frustration brought upon by knowing one of the main characters is a PHILOSOPHER! Unfortunately there are also a lot of plot-holes like Tahani going to the bad place because she was only competing with her sister ,her intention, but the reason Chidi goes to the bad place is the damage caused that he had no control over and did not intend for. Later they tried to fix this by saying the point system was flawed because they were measuring it by the damage caused, but then why would Tahani be there in the first place? Speaking of the new point system, it feels quite obvious to make it about intent, as that shows how truly selfless you are, but instead they throw that out the window and provide a system that allows you to get better- even though your only true intent will now be getting to the good place now that you know it exists. I would enjoy this show if I could turn my brain off and laugh, but unfortunately good comedy doesn't make works of art. Expand
