Tim Daly is miscast as Richard Kimble in this new CBS remake of the classic '60s series. It's worth seeing once, though, just to see the effort. [6 Oct 2000, p.150]

Still, familiarity undermines the updated Fugitive. If you've seen the David Janssen series or the Harrison Ford movie version, you know how the story starts and how it ends. [6 Oct 2000, p.E1]

It is formulaic but built to last. Think of this expensive remake as 'Touched by a Kimble.'... The workmanlike hour continues to mine old themes of alienation, injustice and the search for truth. [5 Oct 2000, p.E-03]

It was all cool years ago, but today it seems just a bit too contrived, even if it does mean lots of work for Hollywood stuntmen. TV has never had a successful remake of an old show, and there's no reason to believe The Fugitive, which debuts Friday at 8 p.m., will escape that bleak statistic. [6 Oct 2000]

TV fave Daly is more personally accessible than Janssen and Harrison Ford. And his show is beautifully produced. But we've seen it all before. CBS must figure this old-style genre-single- lead hero, chase drama, closed-end action-is primed for a comeback, though it's hard to imagine younger viewers sitting still for this Diagnosis Pursuit. While the pacing and acting of the new show is admirable, it's an overtold story and its familiarity lessens the intrigue. Baby, maybe he wasn't born to run, and run, and run. [6 Oct 2000, p.D1]

While The Fugitive is the most high-profile of the CBS crime series, it is also the most lackluster, mostly because Tim Daly is a lightweight Kimble. [6 Oct 2000, p.E1]

    Best Fugitive Retelling!

I am a big fan of ALL THREE tellings of "The Fugitive" story. Each "Fugitive" (David Janssen, Harrison Ford and Tim Daly) had his own fabulous way of being Dr. Richard Kimble.

When I compare the ways the story was told, I think "Fugitive 2000" told it best. It struck a perfect balance between Fugitive 1963 (the first tv series) and Fugitive 1993 (the movie). It focused on Kimble's personal strength of character while increasing the desperation of his dilemma as both the one pursuing and the one being pursued. The course the story took was more modern and engaging for tv viewers. Although this edition ended with the point-blank shooting of the "one-armed man," Matthew Ross's change of heart following his younger daughter Becca's chastising had already set in motion a series of events which surely would have led to Kimble's retrial and exoneration.

It is a tragedy that this tv series for whatever reason has not yet been released on DVD. I keep hoping one day it will.

The plots are surprisingly current with issues such as athletic brain injuries, illegal aliens etc.. You'll see up and coming future stars as well as stars and wonderful supporting actors/actresses from the 1930's, 40's and 50's era movies. Most impotantly you have David Janssen, a very understated actor who played his part to perfection as the man who is on the run trying to not attract attention. Sadly, he always did but the audience is all the better for it. He comes into peoples' lives for a short period and forever changes them in some small or large way. This is a worthy program and certainly holds it's own against many of the dramas of today. Full Review »
