I'm doing a big rewatch of the Expanse as it has been one of my favourite TV shows of the last few years. By episode 3 (so very early in the season) I think you can really tell you're watching something really good. I just love how complex it already starts to get. The Expanse is up there with early Game of Thrones for me in terms of building this rich, complex world and creating a fascinating story out of it. Rewatching this has made me remember why I like it so much and I thoroughly look forward to finishing the whole thing all over again!

One of the best series and opening seasons of recent years.

This also means I am starved for the good stuff and I am glad I finally got around to The Expanse. This first season worked like cannabis to my nerves immediately putting me in a state of relaxation of being at home in good sci-fi writing, great performances, great characterization and a nice slow burn plot supported by decent and adequate CGI for a show set mostly in Space.

    The Good
Even though I generally dislike heavy politicized shows especially in Sci Fi, here the execution and it's role in the plot works well making The Belters, The OPA, Mars and Earth important parts of the story. Even though it mirrors our own civilization, it is intriguing albeit a little disheartening that even after we conquer the stars The Expanse paints a close picture of what our reality might just be.
Thomas Jane is one of those actors who I feel have just not gotten the right role yet but has consistently been giving great performances whenever I see him, Det. Miller is a good fit for him. We see his journey from a Star Helix Officer to the Cop who is like a dog with a bone picking at the plot sideways only to tumble straight into it. Jane pulls of an effortless performance in this gritty but still better off than others Ceres Station Setting.
Shohreh close to 75 pulls off an amazing performance as an experienced, intelligent and jaded but still trying Earth politician doing her level best to keep things from spilling into an all out war. Her no nonsense, cut the bullcrap characterization was very refreshing because of how she plays it always adorned in beautiful and elegant costumes still looking like the belle of the ball.
Steven Strait was the stand out for me in Sky High and in the so bad it's good Covenant 2006, it feels like his performance though similar to the aforementioned silent but strong portrayal has evolved nonetheless as he plays the character that written well for the actor.
Dominique and Wes come onscreen as a duo pulling of the male strength and the female intuition/tempered thinking you would expect from a far flung future. And surprise-surprise, all this without shoving an agenda driven message down out throats, I am happy actual character writing still exists for the Strong Woman.
Cas Anvar pulls of a slightly uneven performance from moment to moment going from could not care less to intense to man with hidden past, it may just be that his character is a tad bit overwritten but it woks well as a whole with the Rocinante crew.
Jared Harris has grown o be one of my favorite actors in the last five years from Moriarty to Legasov in Chernoby and Crozier in the Terror he pulls off amazing character performances and sadly his role is small but I am hoping he will return back in the coming seasons.

The special effects a quite good for a TV show nowhere near the best but the future tech, space travel and space living is pulled of well with amazing help from the costume and art department that amalgamate together into a believable and lived in Future Space. The plot is a great slow burn but doles out information at a good pace making sure to keep viewers engaged in the mystery unless you are a self induced ADD-Twitterholic wreck who cant keep an attention span for more than 280 letters/characters. most normal people will be engaged in the mystery to solve why 'Remember the Cant' is important and maybe all is not as straightforward as it seems.
Dialogue writing is great and believable as characters communicate to each other in an amalgamation of accents with the Lang-Belta and it's creole/various influence being a particularly great addition to the show.

    The Bad
I only had one issue which by the end was pretty redundant, Det. Miller's character falling in love with Julie Mao without even seeing her. It is not outright stated but hinted of his infatuation. It is Julie as an Earther fighting for Belters while Miller himself a belter labeled as a traitor for working as a Star Helix officer this is motivation as to why Miller takes an interest in her, but it is hinted by other characters and not outright confirmed that Miller is in Love with Mao. Even so this asinine character motivation is pretty redundant by the end as there are other more serious reasons as to why Miller needs to be a part of whatever is happening.

The Expanse is a labor of love clearly adapted well from the original book by Daniel Abraham since he is clearly being consulted while writing the show. This is a very satisfying watch for Sci Fi lovers and Mystery lovers and though it might not be the most accessible show to for the masses the good score tells me otherwise.

The Expanse is criminally under-watched and under-marketed. I look forward to each new season as much as I did Game of Thrones.

The characters seem superficial with superficial dialogue and one dimensional in their emotional development, there's no depth to them. When I watch a TV series or movie, I want to see a story that draws me in, that captivates me, that makes me want to find out more, I want to see characters with some depth to them. Any movie or TV series which starts off with violence , gratuitous sex and a shallow plot has already let itself down. Shame, because this subject matter will most likely happen for real in the near future. It could have been done so much better instead of the shallow superficial treatment which this TV series has given this topic.. As I said before the only thing which appealed was the CGI. I love the books and was ok with the first two seasons - the third season, though, hit it out of the ballpark. The acting appears to have picked up at least three notches and so has the overall pace of the narrative. I don't understand how the show runners did it, but went from "nice SF drama, I am glad they made this into a TV show" to "wow, this is truly great TV". Congrats to all involved.

Easily the best space opera since Battlestar Galactica, you can think of The Expanse as a Space GoT. The characters are very well worked and performed, the main plot and sub plots intertwine pretty well, and the science part of sci-fi is sound.

Season 1 of The Expanse takes a measured approach to establishing its lore and world-verse. This will pay dividends later, as major sequences will require almost no forced exposition, but it can make some the events seem extremely random. Characters are good, though, and the sense of sci-fi mystery is well done. Season 1 sets the table; the main course will happen later.

I've always felt that sci-fi often fell short of its potential on the small screen (I'm looking at you Altered Carbon), but this one hits every note I want it to. There's mystery, space battles, plenty of futuristic tech, action, and a world that seems very deep. I have just a few criticisms with the show, and they are as follows:
1: Naomi Nagata is clearly stated to be a full head taller than Holden, and it seems we are at a point in social change that a woman could surely be portrayed as taller than the man in a relationship and regardless of actor choice, it is always possible to make people appear taller/shorter etc. 2: The Show runners/casting directors did such an amazing job casting Alex ( perfect Martian drawl (described in the books as being almost southern)) then turned around and cast a kiwi with zero ability to fit the role of a die-hard martian-born marine (as made crystal clear in a "motivational scene" in which she yells to her crew "who are we?!" only to blurt out "hoo ah way!!".) Over all, I would say the crew is doing a great job, and i truly do look foreward to once again joining syfy the crew of the Roci, and to see what lies beyond the "gateway" to season 3.
Please take what I've said with a grain of salt, as I realize a show will never be the same as the book, I am simply stating what i find to be the biggest loss in translation.

I usually don't give such a high score for anything, as I always believe things can still be better than they were. It's hard to think that about the first season of The Expanse though. This series is simply amazing. From the acting, to it's multi-layered story, to the fx and the scenery. I honestly feel this is one of the best (sci-fi) series I have ever watched.

I just rewatched the entire 1st season to get ready to get started with the 2nd one, and it still had me captivated from start to end. There's a lot of story and characterisation being put in the episodes that a second watch was actually very worth it. Also to see the little things I missed, like the ship navigator of the Rocinante taking the side of the Martians in the first few episodes in his disbelief that they could be behind what happened.

Let's start with the fx. You will think you are watching a movie with the budget that goes along with it. That's how good the fx and the backgrounds are. You won't think you are watching a series from the small screen. At all.

Whoever did the casting of the Expanse deserves a raise, as every actor is on their A game. The detective is (obviously) my favourite, but the crew of the Rocinante and even the characters who make short appearances. Not one second did anybody bring me out of the story, that I didn't believe this was 'real', The scenes and fx naturally help with the immersion, but so did the excellent acting.

And now to the best - and most important part: the story. From the very first episode you will want to find out what the heck happened. It takes you in and doesn't let you go as we find out little by little from 3 divergent perspectives (detective Miller, the Rosinante crew and to a lesser extent the UN undersecretary) the what, why and who. By the end of the season we get a good idea of the motivation, but not completely.

Luckily a 2nd season has already been made where I imagine we get even more answers. And a 3rd is already in the works. If every season is as good as the 1st, then I honestly don't ever want this show to end. Great television, worth every recommendation available. Even if you're not into science fiction to be honest.

Extremely well-made sci-fi series, something I've been searching for a long time. This TV show was a huge surprise for me. The story is good and is surprisingly smart. It feels like a "Game of Thrones" in space at times. The characters are cool and they are acted surprisingly well.

I would recommend this to anyone, but it will probably be an acquired taste. Still, if you are the kind of person who likes sci-fi and space related stuff, I'd be surprised if you didn't

They obviously cut the budget ala Babylon 5 after season 1 (very few extras, tighter directing, smaller scenes, etc..) but it's still good sci-fi. I think it suffers from a plethora of characters that never seem to develop beyond the mission of the week at this point but it's visually appealing and worth tuning in for so far. I actually like the show as much as the books which is rare.

Did this series suddenly get re-written for 10 year-old kids? What's the point?

There was very little about the Season 2 start that has my family at all interested. There was no time for thought, scenes were consistently over-emotional, and cutaways were not smooth and lacked any real segue. The entire thing seems confused and unplanned, culminating in a completely unlikely closing sequence that makes almost no sense whatsoever. Great for keeping a series going, maybe, but so completely unrelated to any realistic expectation, I sincerely doubt I watch another episode.

That's really very sad. Whatever these guys sold out to - whether the continuous repetition of one cliche after another or the stupid Hollywood, "female minority hero" or, "strong woman but sexy and soft and sultry but powerful and independent" - it's just ridiculous trash at this point.

Sell out - 100%. Sign your 8 year-old up. She'll love it. As for the boys? Probably their xbox and playstations continue to offer much more. As for parents - find something with more meaning - this won't hold it for you.

I admit that I’m one of those people who checks this site before I devote time to a show because far more often than not the reviews here parallel my personal opinions about any given show. This one somehow did not hit my radar until I happened to glance at a promotional post on reddit of all places. Normally a critical review of 6.5 isn’t high enough to prompt me to watch a show because, like I said normally the ratings parallel my views. But, I admit that I’m a fan of shows like Firefly, BSG, and Game of Thrones so I was intrigued by the ad which claimed that G.R.R.M had said that this (paraphrasing) was the show that fans of Firefly and BSG had been waiting for. And so the user ratings won me over. After binge watching the first season in one day I think that either I was not paying attention last year or the show was not properly marketed.

I have not read the books, I have not heard of them before now, so I had no idea what I was getting into. From the very beginning I was intrigued and I throughout the series, which I binged watched from s01e01 to s01e10 finale I never lost interest. There are flaws here which I won’t discuss because surely the critics have that covered. But there are characters and ideas here that I can’t imagine a person not falling for and the story is pretty good. I have season two on record and I probably won’t miss an episode premier unless things just go south quickly. So far the show is exactly as G.R.R.M described it in that promotion. If you're a fan of Firefly and BSG you will love it. I am and I give the expanse an 8/10.

It's probably not going to accumulate a cult following, but it's another slightly above average show from SyFy that's in the same basket with the likes of Falling Skies or Defiance. It doesn't achieve the level of some science fiction cinematography like Star Wars or Alien, but it can be entertaining in it's own way, depends on how much you like to nitpick on plot holes.

Couple of aspects bother me more than others:
    1) The most significant one is that the plot seems to center a bit too much on the main characters while putting a serious emphasis on the political background of the scenario, but develops the latter insufficiently. Consequently we don't really get answers to dwelling questions like: How did the different factions come to be? Why is there so much tension between those factions? How has Mars become such a strong military power if that planet is barren and, as it said in the show, hasn't even started terraforming into an Earth-like planet (meaning it's hardly sustainable)? Based on our knowledge today such a scenario is not possible and Mars could only serve as a colony, nothing more.

Also the OPA is regarded as a terrorist organization and in several instances the viewer is expected to react solely upon the connotation of the word, rather than the background of their activities. There are two kinds of dialogue you'll come across:"He's OPA! Terrorist bastard!" and "You're wrong! The OPA only serves the people, we're the good guys." How could any viewer sympathize with either one? It's easy if you're an easily triggered person that doesn't need more than some guy to tell you that the other guy is a terrorist and you're already emotionally involved. Others need more intricacy.

    2) Another problem is that sometimes the characters seem to be pulling deductions out of their asses - they just randomly know information that helps drive the plot... I call that cheating and it really makes the already fast-paced show feel like it's developing even faster than it should.

    3) And what the bloody hell is going on with these dumb user interfaces that we see in almost every average sci-fi flick? They're all over the walls and tables, but most of them seem impractical and when they do get used, we usually only get to see that single big button in the middle of the screen that says something you'd never expect to see there. It's kind of analogous to those scenes from other movies where someone is locally hacking a computer for top-secret information and there's that big button in the middle of the screen that says HACK. You press it and a wild loading bar appears...

The writing is pretty good.I can smell most plot-twists in other shows and i always know what the general approach is on the story but here? The characters are flawed and not one is purely good or bad what makes it kinda hard to predict what they do next. That is something precious for a TV show these days since most shows use sterotypes that you smell a mile away and you know after 3 minutes who will go rogue and betray everyone. Not here!

Read the reviews, no reviewers took their jobs seriously on this show. They watched at most a few episodes. The assignments must have been given to people who don't even do sci fi. There's no singing, there's no dancing. There's no laugh tracks. There's no villains twirling their mustaches.

This is a serious show, that is plot centered with deep characters and high ideas. It's a gritty look at a plausible future with limited space travel. It's grounded, and it's engrossing. It's some of the best TV that there's been in years, and I can tell already it's under-appreciated.

Very good show. The plot is great and full of suspense. Every episode makes you want to learn more about the settings. Can't wait for season 2, 3 and 4 hopefully!

My biggest complaint is the language. They at least (mostly) bleep out the f-bomb, but anything else gets aired. I've never understood why some feel the need to use profanity to tell a story. I think it actually takes away from a very good show, and my rating reflects that.

Mars is the military power with zealots looking to terraform the planet, the Earth is the old world and the belt has a kind of third world status, the humans there even looking different because of low gravity.

The plot follows two main storylines that converge later on, one being a breadcrumb thriller type, and the other pure science fiction survival in space with unknown enemies. The worldbuilding is great, character building could be better initially, but catches fire later on. The space battles are intense (some will have issue with sound, but I like it as it is distorted and gives off a great vibe). The show stays remarkably faithful to the book series it is based on. If you are a science fiction fan this is a must, if you're not I invite you to check it out.

Can't wait for the second season!

Rarely have I encountered such wasted promise.

There is some solid acting, decent production values, two quite thrilling space battles, and the story universe is very nicely fleshed out, but how on Earth could this series become such a dismembered wreck in its second half is really a mystery to me. I would recommend you to avoid it unless for study or professional reasons.

We were not disappointed. The Expanse presents an original, rich, and believable world, right down to the grime, slang, fashion, and bad haircuts, and comes complete with its own set of antiheroes, most of whom are just trying to keep their head down and get paid. We loved it (and are stoked for the next season). If you've enjoyed shows like Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Farscape, or Star Trek (especially DS9), then you'll probably love it.

    Some specific (spoiler-free) observations -

    (1) The world is a lot to take in at first, and as I mentioned it has its own slang and quirky aesthetics. I strongly recommend watching with subtitles till you get the hang of it. Once you do, then you'll be fascinated to learn more about the world, which is extremely believable, and maybe the most interesting vision of the future I've seen since Firefly.

    (2) The story is split between three sets of characters in different parts of the Solar System, so the plot is initially slow burning. We also found ourselves more interested in the side characters at first, though the protagonists came into their own as the series progressed. The acting varies from solid to excellent.

    (3) It has a gentle cyberpunk feel - think Bladerunner, slightly toned down.

    (4) I thought the show did a great job of including actors from a bunch of varied ethnic backgrounds in a very natural way. Too many visions of the future make it look as though only Americans and Brits made it past the 21st century. The Expanse paints a picture of a chaotic, multi-ethnic humanity in which nation and race have become less important than your planet or station of birth, and languages have been all mixed up together.

    (5) Production values are extremely high. The fight scenes are well choreographed and the VFX in the space scenes is great. Probably the best I've ever seen on SyFy, even better than Battlestar Galactica.

    (6) The plot isn't super complex, but it's deep and interesting; almost a little bit Game of Thrones. We found the season got a little slow in the middle (episodes 5-6) although these were still interesting. But the early episodes quickly got intense, and the finale was totally epic.

So, go watch it! We're going to try to resist spoiling ourselves with the books before Season 2!

Great production values, but they really have to do a better job to convey the story. I shouldn't have to read the book in advance and already know what's going to happen -- just so I can understand what's happening on this show!

Perhaps the best thing on TV after Game of Thrones. The fact it's science fiction is almost immaterial to the fact the story is excellent, the acting superb and production values are very high. Take this show out of space and put it in the wild west or 17th century Russia and you have an equally impressive endeavor. It's excellent.

The cgi and effects are quality, From the sparrow to the long-limbed humans they really add to the atmosphere without detracting from the story. To me that is exactly how effects should be.

One big name movie franchise was relatively disappointing recently. This show has filled that void.

Some of the dialogue also isn't that great, particularly for the pilot (Alex). Some of the characters are also a bit weak in general.

Overall though, the story is very interesting and unpredictable, and also explores a number of themes that are relevant in our own time, like corporate crime and corruption. I hope the show remains as good as the mystery behind the conspiracy and the alien aspects are revealed - similar shows like Lost and BSG have struggled in their later seasons because of this.

Given the lack of good sci-fi programs in the last 5-10 years, this is definitely a must-watch right now.

This is not a show for people who do not like to pay attention to - and occasionally rewind - their TV shows. It is smart TV, and does a credible job keeping the Sci-Fi "hard". There are no knobby-head aliens here, just humans spread throughout the solar system, with credible factions developing over resources (mainly) and different visions of humanity's future (secondarily). It has the gritty punch of Battlestar Galactica (the modern one), the political intrigue of Babylon 5 (minus knobby-headed aliens), and the ragtag-crew-in-space theme from Firefly (though significantly less humor than that show). Throw in a little Blade Runner and a little Total Recall, and it ends up being an excellent composite. The writing is nuanced, believable, well-paced and thought-provoking. The culture of the OPA and the "Belters" is fascinating, from their outlook on life and politics to their frenetic (unique) dialect created specifically for this story; in fact, the belters' way of speaking and pseudo signing at the same time is consistently impacting.

The performances, even from the young and unknown actors, is top-notch. The characters and their subtleties are becoming more compelling with every episode. The world-building is impressive. The cinematography is as good as anything on television.

The Expanse is Chinatown meets Game of Thrones in outer space. It is a hard sci-fi noir story, and in what is arguably the best year of original, serialized television in history, The Expanse ranks near the very top of the class. When competing with the pilot seasons of new shows this year, only Mr. Robot gives The Expanse a run for its money.

While not quite as provocative or elevated as The Leftovers, The Americans, or Fargo, The Expanse is absolutely one of the best things on television right now. If it were one of the three shows above, it would have a 10/10 score from me. My 9/10 score isn't a ding against it, so much as my firm belief that it has the potential to continue to grow and improve.

The Expanse is indeed expansive with the universe it sets up within the pilot and through the characters presented. Unfortunately though there’s so much going on in the pilot that it quickly becomes a convoluted romp through space that’s more about showcasing the wasteland that humans have become than developing characters viewers will remember, let alone invest in watching.
