    Very well done first episode. Amazed at SyFy's commitment to re-brand themselves as more than just a gag reel of cheesy, purposely terrible programs.. This a true return to well done science fiction. Bravo.

    Wen you get right down to it, the series is both faithful to the books, but new and entertaining in unexpected ways. It's an incredibly entertaining hour of television, that somehow doesn't cop-out, just give you moment of shallow "instant gratification." The art-direction is beautiful, the world is enticing and complete, and the story has already been hashed-out by the brilliant Novelist Team under pen-name James S.A. Corey. This show will continue to be successful, and pull in viewers... if only Syfy allows it the time required to do so. Here's me rooting for the gargantuan-swing-for-the-fence that this show.     Read the reviews, no reviewers took their jobs seriously on this show. They watched at most a few episodes. The assignments must have been given to people who don't even do sci fi. Just ignore them. I'm not sure this show will have wide appeal. It's not cartoonish, it's not big and boisterous and overly dramatic, it doesn't focus on people just posturing and profaning.     Amazing show, it's easily the best modern sci fi show at the moment, last one was Battlestar Galactica.
    Cast was great, characters and story very interesting and well created and besides that, production is very well done. It's not some low budget poorly done show. Visuals are awesome and the world sense is so realistic, I could easily believe this could possibly be humanity's future.
    My    Amazing show, it's easily the best modern sci fi show at the moment, last one was Battlestar Galactica.
    Cast was great, characters and story very interesting and well created and besides that, production is very well done. It's not some low budget poorly done show. Visuals are awesome and the world sense is so realistic, I could easily believe this could possibly be humanity's future.

    This TV show was a huge surprise for me. The story is good and is surprisingly smart. It feels like a "Game of Thrones" in space at times. The characters are cool and they are acted surprisingly well.

    I would recommend this to anyone, but it will probably be an acquired taste.     Probably the best Sci-fi I watched in years. And it is no wonder, the books are just as awesome (if not better) and they became even more complete with faces and visuals now that the series were filmed. The fors season ends in the middle of nowhere, and while it left a bit of a sourness in my mouth to even mention it, there two factors that mostly make up for it - we get to watch TheProbably the best Sci-fi I watched in years. And it is no wonder, the books are just as awesome (if not better) and they became even more complete with faces and visuals now that the series were filmed. The fors season ends in the middle of nowhere, and while it left a bit of a sourness in my mouth to even mention it, there two factors that mostly make up for it - we get to watch The Butcher of Anderson Station and the Season 2 started even stronger than expected.

    On a side note, the Season 2 is so good it surpasses the books. The series is a must watch for any sci-fi fan.    … Expand

    Expanse is a breath of fresh air into the modern Sci-Fi genre. Finally we have a believeable hardcore space Sci-Fi tv show. It has it all: believable space physics, politics, likable characters and interesting villains. It has a dark atmosphere that reminds me that of the all time classics Babylon 5. If you ever liked that one I can almost guarantee you that you will Enjoy expense. HighlyExpanse is a breath of fresh air into the modern Sci-Fi genre.     Amazing show. As fan of the book series this show is doing an excellent job adapting the books with what i feel to be appropriate changes. Wes Chatham's portrayal of Amos Burton is downright perfect.

Bravo, I hope this show eeks out at least a few more seasons before the morons kill it with bad reviews based on their own stupidity and low IQ.     Very good show. The plot is great and full of suspense. Every episode makes you want to learn more about the settings. Can't wait for season 2, 3 and 4 hopefully!

    They obviously cut the budget ala Babylon 5 after season 1 (very few extras, tighter directing, smaller scenes, etc..) but it's still good sci-fi. I think it suffers from a plethora of characters that never seem to develop beyond the mission of the week at this point but it's visually appealing and worth tuning in for so far. I actually like the show as much as the books which is rare.

    When a Sci Fi show make u feel the G force you cant just stop watch it , i really didn't expect it to be that good , everything is accurate physics , story , politics , effects ,actors and acting . i really enjoy it

    if you look for a space strategic ships fight dont miss this series .

    I'm not surprised that this show has a rating of 6.5 by critics and 8.3 by users on Metacritic at the time of this review. I admit that I’m one of those people who checks this site before I devote time to a show because far more often than not the reviews here parallel my personal opinions about any given show. This one somehow did not hit my radar until I happened to glance at a promotional post on reddit of all places. Normally a critical review of 6.5 isn’t high enough to prompt me to watch a show because, like I said normally the ratings parallel my views. But, I admit that I’m a fan of shows like Firefly, BSG, and Game of Thrones so I was intrigued by the ad which claimed that G.R.R.M had said that this (paraphrasing) was the show that fans of Firefly and BSG had been waiting for. And so the user ratings won me over. After binge watching the first season in one day I think that either I was not paying attention last year or the show was not properly marketed.

    I have not read the books, I have not heard of them before now, so I had no idea what I was getting into. From the very beginning I was intrigued and I throughout the series, which I binged watched from s01e01 to s01e10 finale I never lost interest. There are flaws here which I won’t discuss because surely the critics have that covered. But there are characters and ideas here that I can’t imagine a person not falling for and the story is pretty good. I have season two on record and I probably won’t miss an episode premier unless things just go south quickly. So far the show is exactly as G.R.R.M described it in that promotion. If you're a fan of Firefly and BSG you will love it. I am and I give the expanse an 8/10.    … Expand

    One of the best Sci fi series the series is more interesting from Battlestar Galactica. Season 1 started a bit slow and the plot was a bit confussing sometimes but Season 2 looks even more promising with better explanation of events and even more thrilling moments

    I dont get why so many people say it is a bad looking show btw!I mean it is not a super expensive show for sure but there are a lot of details in the visuals.If you want to nitpick to badly watch other shows where the story falls flat on its own face after 3 minutes in EP 1!!This behaviour ruinied so many shows because everyone think he/she is a **** prof. critic.Stop that!

    Conclusion:Great show with an interesting and realistic world(its close to total recall with Arnold i think from how the world is built), good writing and for the most part good acting and amazing visuals(especially the CGI scenes).A second season is coming and i still miss the last EP so im curious about how everything ends.    … Expand

Yes it starts a bit slow and does a lot of world building in terms of characters, setting and places, which can confuse you quite a bit in the beginning, but if you give it three episodes it will suck you in and it gets really good.     Amazing show. Was expecting this to look low-budget and gimmicky/cheesy but boy was I wrong. This is some serious sci-fi/action drama. Props to all those involved for this amazing show. And finally, biggest props to Shohreh Aghdashloo who, I feel, is the strongest character/actor on the show. 9/10

    My girlfriend and I started watching the Expanse because we were hungry for some new intelligent sci-fic (and feeling a bit weary of the slew of superhero shows and movies). We were not disappointed. The Expanse presents an original, rich, and believable world, right down to the grime, slang, fashion, and bad haircuts, and comes complete with its own set of antiheroes, most of whom areMy girlfriend and I started watching the Expanse because we were hungry for some new intelligent sci-fic (and feeling a bit weary of the slew of superhero shows and movies). We were not disappointed. The Expanse presents an original, rich, and believable world, right down to the grime, slang, fashion, and bad haircuts, and comes complete with its own set of antiheroes, most of whom are just trying to keep their head down and get paid. We loved it (and are stoked for the next season). If you've enjoyed shows like Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Farscape, or Star Trek (especially DS9), then you'll probably love it.

    Some specific (spoiler-free) observations -

    (1) The world is a lot to take in at first, and as I mentioned it has its own slang and quirky aesthetics. I strongly recommend watching with subtitles till you get the hang of it. Once you do, then you'll be fascinated to learn more about the world, which is extremely believable, and maybe the most interesting vision of the future I've seen since Firefly.

    (2) The story is split between three sets of characters in different parts of the Solar System, so the plot is initially slow burning. We also found ourselves more interested in the side characters at first, though the protagonists came into their own as the series progressed. The acting varies from solid to excellent.

    (3) It has a gentle cyberpunk feel - think Bladerunner, slightly toned down.

    (4) I thought the show did a great job of including actors from a bunch of varied ethnic backgrounds in a very natural way. Too many visions of the future make it look as though only Americans and Brits made it past the 21st century. The Expanse paints a picture of a chaotic, multi-ethnic humanity in which nation and race have become less important than your planet or station of birth, and languages have been all mixed up together.

    (5) Production values are extremely high. The fight scenes are well choreographed and the VFX in the space scenes is great. Probably the best I've ever seen on SyFy, even better than Battlestar Galactica.

    (6) The plot isn't super complex, but it's deep and interesting; almost a little bit Game of Thrones. We found the season got a little slow in the middle (episodes 5-6) although these were still interesting. But the early episodes quickly got intense, and the finale was totally epic.

    So, go watch it! We're going to try to resist spoiling ourselves with the books before Season 2!    … Expand

    The plot follows two main storylines that converge later on, one being a breadcrumb thriller type, and the other pure science fiction survival in space with unknown enemies. The worldbuilding is great, character building could be better initially, but catches fire later on. The space battles are intense (some will have issue with sound, but I like it as it is distorted and gives off a great vibe). The show stays remarkably faithful to the book series it is based on. If you are a science fiction fan this is a must, if you're not I invite you to check it out.

    Pour ma part je trouve la série assez original avec un scénario qui tiens la route. Dans ce registre rien actuellement pour concurrencer, pour une fois qu'on a une bonne série SF on va pas s'en plainde :)

    I love the books and was ok with the first two seasons - the third season, though, hit it out of the ballpark. The acting appears to have picked up at least three notches and so has the overall pace of the narrative. I don't understand how the show runners did it, but went from "nice SF drama, I am glad they made this into a TV show" to "wow, this is truly great TV". Congrats to all involved.

    The show follows truly but makes clever changes when it fits the filmed narrative better.
    Brutal, unforgiving with    Four episodes into the new series I become more and more impressed. I have read the novels and they were very good. Realistic descriptions of a power struggle that does not shy away from genocide. Cruel and dark, but sadly realistic. The books are not always easy to follow.

    Season 1 of The Expanse takes a measured approach to establishing its lore and world-verse. This will pay dividends later, as major sequences will require almost no forced exposition, but it can make some the events seem extremely random. Characters are good, though, and the sense of sci-fi mystery is well done. Season 1 sets the table; the main course will happen later.

    I was on the fence the first couple episodes, but they are doing so much world building that the major early criticism was they tried to do too much too fast. By episode three though it starts to pay off and really starts to come together in episode 4.

    A lot of characters and factions to develop, but there is huge potential here and the high production values give me great hope.

    Some episodes further and I still couldn't believe how good this show was, in overall quality.
    After all that's been served to us as sci-fi and fantasy, they really created something amazing.

    I know that people from the rest of the world are not taken into account, which is imho a big mistake for ratings. May be the channels only live on adds, and that's why rating is so important in USA. Having said that, and being 54 and a scifi lover since...hmmm ever?.... I think this show is much better by far than some others from Scifi.     This is arguably the best hard sci-fi show around right now. SyFy is not HBO but they got pretty close to casting the right bunch of people. A valiant attempt indeed, how it pans out - I guess we'll know if they renew but they sure have my vote.

    Great production values, great universe and story, and they're not afraid to have some gore. Also surprised at how close they're keeping to science when dealing with things like air, gravity, vacuum, ship flight, space weaponry, etc. I was honestly surprised at a few scenes given that this is Syfy, but    I have not read the books but I am absolutely loving the show! It has the gritty punch of Battlestar Galactica (the modern one), the political intrigue of Babylon 5 (minus knobby-headed aliens), and the ragtag-crew-in-space theme from Firefly (though significantly less humor than that show). Throw in a little Blade Runner and a little Total Recall, and it ends up being an excellent composite. This show shares "must watch as soon as it is recorded" status on our TiVo with only Game of Thrones and Daredevil.… Expand

    Perhaps the best thing on TV after Game of Thrones. The fact it's science fiction is almost immaterial to the fact the story is excellent, the acting superb and production values are very high. Take this show out of space and put it in the wild west or 17th century Russia and you have an equally impressive endeavor. It's excellent.

    Gritty, realistic SciFi that keeps me coming back for more. After the initial adjustment in the first 15 minutes the world building is intoxicating and the array of characters are connected so expertly well that you hardly notice the varying distance between them.

    This is the true successor to Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and TNG. Best SciFi show I've seen in a long time. Fantastic production values, excellent characters, and well written dialogue and plot. My only disappointment is that I can't binge the entire thing right away. Great work SyFy.

    Pilot episode was pretty good. Started a little slow but I was definitely hooked by the end of the show and already invested in some of the characters. Little early to tell but it's not like a lot of shows come along in this particular genre so I hope it works out.

    Additional: I quite like the way they are building the crew relationships and the world, a little bit at a time, ever so gradually.     I was just going to watch Episode 1 of The Expanse yesterday. Unfortunately for me, it was so good that I watched the next 3 in succession today but that means I now have to wait for new episodes to air on Syfy since I watched them all online (Syfy website) and Syfy only just aired Episode 2 on TV! The storyline is fantastic and the mystery elements are welcome and will make me come back time and again to continue watching. The CGI is top-notch stuff and I'm incredibly happy with this - Reminds me of SGU. The actors play their roles well and were well chosen. Can't really fault this series.

    I hope we have many seasons of The Expanse! It's hard to please me and you can consider me thoroughly pleased. Can't wait to see where the story takes us! Highly recommended. If you haven't started watching the show, I recommend that you start now. I've seen a couple of people whinging in this reviews section about trivial and stupid things but I'm sure that as long as you have at least a single functioning brain cell, you'll be fine!    … Expand

    Let's be honest, no Syfy show is going to get A talent but I think overall it's a solid Sci Fi show with a pretty cool premise. I'm honestly more surprised at the quality but it's almost on par with Eureka. If you don't like Sci Fi you might not love this but I think any solid fan is going to find a lot to like. I am worried this will become another lost series but it could be onto something.

Please SyFy please, please continue the story, don't dump it. the plot, actors, cinemaphotography, and the technology are outstanding. This is the best space opera show since Battlestar Galatica and Dune. Keep up the good work Syfy. Love, love, love this show.

    Started watching this and really did not expect this series to be so damn good just 4 shows in! Cannot wait for more episodes! This could be real sci fi and return to the feeling of the 2005 battlestar galactica ! Well done syfy but I think you aired an episode this week which is a bit stupid as people are busy for the holiday season preparation!

Re-watching that first episode made a huge difference when I watched the next three and I can't wait to see more. Thomas Jane does much better than I expected and his take on the 'grizzled cop with a heart' is pretty good. The science seems pretty good WRT the pros/cons of gravity (or lack thereof), how difficult space combat might really be, and how humans can adapt themselves to creating space porn. I've not read the books but it seems like fans are largely happy with this version.

    The story is moving along, there's not too much in the way of superfluous scenes that don't serve a purpose in moving the story along. There's some nice slight-of-hand with some characters who's initial impression on this viewer had to adapt and change over time (I'm looking at you, Mrs. Avasarala — you're not just the war mongerer I thought you were) and some good misdirection to complicate things (again, I didn't read the book[s]) in the plot.

    I look forward to more of this show and at this point I hope it keeps the greenlight for a Season 2.    … Expand

    Watched the free pilot, then waited for the series to start. I was blown away by the first four episodes. So much so that I went and binge-read the first two books in about a week. It's not a blow-for-blow recreation of the books, but it does a great job incorporating a bunch of different story lines into an amazing TV series.     Watched the first 4 episodes (rest still needs to be aired)

    The struggle for water rights is something we are becoming more and more familiar with on Earth.
    Being a Belter is hell on your bones apparently.
    I'm interested t see more of Canterbury engineer Naomi Nagata (played by Dominique Tipper). Hopefully she's not a bad guy.
    Detective Miller's Fedora is a nice touch.
    Where can get some space boots? I need those.
    I would gladly watch a whole show of Shoreh Aghdashloo just reading the phone book (if we still had phone books). Her voice is wonderful!    … Expand

    the Expanse so far have a good plot with mysteries yet remain unsolved. the producer and the writer put a good effort teasing piece by piece information every episode which obviously becomes one reason to watch this series next week.

    One of the very best sci-fi TV shows to come out in a long time. Excellent plot, acting and SFX. I'm not sure what the budget was for this show, but it kills Star Trek Discovery in every aspect.

    Watched all 4 episodes so far and book reader of this series. This show has it all and am so psyched about it's future. i am so jealous of viewers who have not read this book. They are in for a lot of events and good story ahead. The show is doing a fantastic job balancing different point of views and the visuals are top notch as well as sound, music, story, acting. The story and universe are both immense, so if you can't handle lots of characters and scenes it may take a second watch.     I usually don't give such a high score for anything, as I always believe things can still be better than they were. It's hard to think that about the first season of The Expanse though. This series is simply amazing. From the acting, to it's multi-layered story, to the fx and the scenery. I honestly feel this is one of the best (sci-fi) series I have ever watched.

    I just rewatched the entire 1st season to get ready to get started with the 2nd one, and it still had me captivated from start to end. There's a lot of story and characterisation being put in the episodes that a second watch was actually very worth it. Also to see the little things I missed, like the ship navigator of the Rocinante taking the side of the Martians in the first few episodes in his disbelief that they could be behind what happened.

    Let's start with the fx. You will think you are watching a movie with the budget that goes along with it. That's how good the fx and the backgrounds are. You won't think you are watching a series from the small screen. At all.

    Whoever did the casting of the Expanse deserves a raise, as every actor is on their A game. The detective is (obviously) my favourite, but the crew of the Rocinante and even the characters who make short appearances. Not one second did anybody bring me out of the story, that I didn't believe this was 'real', The scenes and fx naturally help with the immersion, but so did the excellent acting.

    And now to the best - and most important part: the story. From the very first episode you will want to find out what the heck happened. It takes you in and doesn't let you go as we find out little by little from 3 divergent perspectives (detective Miller, the Rosinante crew and to a lesser extent the UN undersecretary) the what, why and who. By the end of the season we get a good idea of the motivation, but not completely.

    Luckily a 2nd season has already been made where I imagine we get even more answers. And a 3rd is already in the works. If every season is as good as the 1st, then I honestly don't ever want this show to end. Great television, worth every recommendation available. Even if you're not into science fiction to be honest.    … Expand

    Holy SH!t. The best Space opera I have seen in the last decade. It is well written, great acting, surprisingly good CGi. Overall Badass show. It all comes together in season 3. Best Tv show of 2018

    Easily the best space opera since Battlestar Galactica, you can think of The Expanse as a Space GoT. The characters are very well worked and performed, the main plot and sub plots intertwine pretty well, and the science part of sci-fi is sound.

    This is the best Sci-Fi TV show of this decade. Of all the shows, it's the first one I have purchased entirely on Amazon Prime. It's a tough life for the characters in this show and you will always have a genuine concern that they won't survive the season.

    Had mediocre expectations but wow this really surprised me. The first half of the first episode is by far the worst - I found it a bit hard to follow but I stayed the course and finished the season and honestly this is one of the best shows I've ever watched. The mystery and story-line progression is really good.

    Both a brilliant piece of Sci-Fi television and a remarkably faithful adaptation of the books it's based on which was a welcome surprise.

    I recommend it for anyone who is a fan of Sci-Fi, especially Hard Sci-Fi.

Each time I had to start to watch it from the beginning (as each time there were about 4 months in between) and never really got into it.     This is REAL Scifi! No Fantasy-Show, no Star Trek/Star Wars. The best Scifi-TV-Show after Battlestar Galactica (remake) and extremely underrated. Fantastic 3rd season impressively shows the high level. It is so sad: the intellectual level of this TV show is too high for the average television viewer... I don't like Amazon, but thanks for saving this brilliant TV show!

    The best sci-fi show in media right now. The writing is excellent, with interesting plots and well-developed characters. Plus, its world-building is fascinating and has a more realistic feel to it (e.g., the way it depicts space combat).

    The biggest challenge will be how well all these threads can hold together, but so far, the show’s proven its ability to focus when essential. And all those little stories, when blended together, create a hell of a narrative.

    The Expanse is indeed expansive with the universe it sets up within the pilot and through the characters presented. Unfortunately though there’s so much going on in the pilot that it quickly becomes a convoluted romp through space that’s more about showcasing the wasteland that humans have become than developing characters viewers will remember, let alone invest in watching.
