Season 4 Review:
Complicated as this set-up might read, the sheer gorgeousness of “The Expense” goes quite a distance toward shoring up a person’s commitment to it, as do the performances. ... A heavily serialized show like this one will never be easily accessible to newcomers who drop into mid-voyage. Ergo, to say that this previous description provides all you need to know to get up to speed is not quite accurate. But it does help that these new episodes reconfigure the grid a bit and simplify the plot.

Season 1 Review:
The Expanse as a TV show may not be as revolutionary and nuanced as top-tier golden-age TV, but it makes a big, bold crater in the category it falls in. That of actual, hard science fiction, where the repercussions for high-gravitational environments are tangible and the simple act of redirecting a space ship is its own set-piece; within that genre, it’s essentially perfect.

Season 5 Review:
For fans who want a bit more going on than a bunch of solo heroes working through their own long, dark teatimes of the soul, I can see it being a bit of a slog. That said, a bit of a slog, when it comes to The Expanse, is still a deeply satisfying, multisensory experience, and for all that the interpersonal stories are smaller this season, it is still as beautiful to look at as ever.

Season 6 Review:
It’s not exactly unfinished business, but this season — particularly in its last couple episodes — is marked by the confidence of a show that’s got six seasons under its belt and still doesn’t particularly feel like stopping, no matter what any official announcement might say.

Season 5 Review:
The Expanse’s complexity risks turning off the casual viewer. Yet its portrayal of a multi-faceted and morally ambiguous future brimming with dozens of heroes and villains remains a stunning achievement. For those prepared to commit the necessary time and attention, it’s an absolute blast.

Season 2 Review:
On the whole, the series is one I’d mainly recommend with an “if you like this sort of thing” caveat (as opposed to BSG, whose appeal transcended space operatics). I happen to be someone who likes this sort of thing, but The Expanse season two is a much better version of that thing now that everyone knows what’s up and can take action accordingly.

Season 1 Review:
Like Amazon’s similarly good-looking but unsteady The Man In The High Castle, The Expanse has a compelling story to tell, but is somewhat unwilling to play to the strengths of its format. But unlike that series, Syfy’s latest picks up steam as it pushes forward, gaining confidence that the audience will be along for the interplanetary ride. By the fourth episode, it’s firing on (mostly) all thrusters, with thrilling heroics, shocking deaths, and a sense of urgency building across the various narrative threads.

Hard to say where it's all going, but anyone with an interest in serious sci-fi should strap in for the long ride. [7-20 Dec 2015, p.17]
