Its essentially a story of a man who unwillingly becomes a superhero killer after his girlfriend's death and goes on a wild adventure with a rogue CIA group to seemingly take on the impossible mission of killing superheroes. The Sups are excellent in their douche portrayals and are current parodies of popular dc/marvel heroes (a-train = flash, homelander = superman, etc). The acting is excellent, there's a particular seen on an airplane that actually shocked me...the show is willing to push the boundaries of sadistic comedy. Thumbs up for Homelander and his creepy relationships. Thumbs up for Hughies relationship with Starlight. Karl Urban is a badass. Frenchie is hit and miss (can't understand him without subtitles). Despite the Sups parading around as insufferable maniacs, the show does a good job showing their "human" side and flaws. Surprisingly, I found myself sympathetic towards The Deep. Its also interesting to see a corporation run the lives of superheroes, the VP is successfully convincing and manipulative, otherwise it wouldn't make sense why any Sups would listen to her character. My biggest gripe is towards the last half of the show where The Boys/Sups start making questionable decisions allowing each other to live for the sake of extending their cat and mouse game. Starlight is a doll and sympathetic character, but her action scenes are uninspiring and sometimes cringe worthy. The ending, although surprising, is also a head scratcher on how the show would proceed with season 2. Overall, its an excellent show, but i would say the 10 scores are from viewers who are overpraising the concept of superheroes gone bad while overlooking some obvious weaknesses in the plot. Expand

I was very pleased to hear that it would be made into a TV seriesWhen I first came late to the table making up for lost time with good comics, a friend recommended 'The Boys' to me and it remains my favourite comics series that I have read. I was very pleased to hear that it would be made into a TV series and having watched the whole series during the past few days I can whole-heartedly say that I am fully down with this screen adaptation. There is invariably a great deal of naye-saying whenever a much loved comic series is adapted for the TV but in this instance it will be completely unfounded. It is not a direct literal adaptation from the comics but all of the most significant themes are either accounted for or alluded to for subsequent exploration. The biggest departure from the books is that the TV series is has a noticeably more balanced approach to gender which in my view is definitely a positive, and will certainly appeal to a wider audience. The narrative surrounding the Vogelbaum Compound is also dealt with quite differently but I have a feeling that there are probably good reasons for this that will become apparent as the story progresses. The script and characterisation are excellent, the production is totally seamless and the overall tone is entirely faithful to the books that we have known and loved. This often seems to be an advantage of having the storys' creator closely involved with the production of a screen adaptation. As usual most of the critical reviews that I read would appear to have been written by people who either haven't actually watched the whole series, don't know where the story has come from (and consequently have no reason to have faith in what we have not yet been told about it), or in some cases have dismissively attributed it to another streaming service. Massive thumbs up! Long may 'The Boys' in its' most recent incarnation continue! ✊ Expand

I had just begun to watch Marvel and DC movies. Then one of my friends suggested me aboutThe Boys back when season 1 had just begun. I wasn't very much interested in in Amazon Prime so I thought should give it a try when I get time to do so. And when I got the subscription this was the very first thing I saw.

The Boys is set in a dystopian society where superheroes a something of a cultural identity. Unlike Watchmen where people were shown to have lost their interest and superheroes because of their existence in the real world, people in The Boys absolutely adore the superheroes. They watch the movies, buy their toys, read their books, and do everything with way more passion than we do for superheroes. Homelander is given the same reputation as Superman, and is worshipped like a demigod. The truth, however, is completely different.

Nowadays it has become a trend to show that superheroes are flawed people. They also have many wrong habits and tend to make mistakes. But this show takes it on a completely different level. Superheroes are not interested in in doing their job of serving humanity at all. Rather they are owned by corporations like Vought, who use them for marketing purposes and for selling the dream of becoming a superhero by injecting children with Compound V as kids. And the gullible people do not question this as it has become something of a taboo to speak against these gods who live among us. The only people who dare to speak against them are The Boys, a team of misfits led by Billy Butcher. In the beginning of the show they are able to take out Translucent and use his dead body to taunt Homelander.

Starlight is is one of the members of the seven who actually wants to serve humanity but is tried to be bullied into submission by The Deep, A-Train and Homelander. I really like how all of them get their comeuppance, do I feel a little bad for The Deep. In season 2 he was shown to have been bullied as a kid and that is word changed his personality. This is something which clearly states how false Vought's propaganda about having the happy life of being a superhero is. Homelander is also shown to hate faking his origin story just for the entertainment of the people. A-Train was also a bad guy but helps out in season 2 and can also be excused for being a drug addict.

Season 2 introduced Stormfront, and I really like how they showed her to be the forward thinking member of the The Seven and ultimately her true personality was slowly revealed. Finally she also got what she deserved and everything went back to normal. I am really hoping that season 3 also turns out to be as good as the other two and the series doesn't drag on for no reason other than cash grabbing, because in that case they would just become what they are fighting against.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm writing this review as someone who read the negative reviews on Watchmen and saw the suggestions to watch this show. After watching the entire 1st season i'm a bit disappointed. Maybe because i expected a "better version" of the watchmen when in actuality this is a whole other show about an entirely different world (that for some reason still references this world without actually acknowledging it). A lot of reviews claimed this show to be unpolitical Even though the show heavily relies of War Profiteering and "Me Too" mockery to push the story. I've never seen a show with so much damn Sexual Assault gawd damn even the rapist get raped. The pay offs for the individual characters are just not there with an ending that just sets you up to begin the next season in WTF mode. So yeah the show is " Apolitical if you actually mean contains no dialog about Racial awareness or Class Disparities (which are more or less a larger part of the watchmen Tv show storyline). I wish people wouldn't compare shows in this way cause my veiw of this show was really trying to see how they were at all similar instead of seeing it for its actual self. This is and ALRIGHT show about a Justice League who act as the face for a corrupt Corporation . The Main Character is mad and gets dragged along by some bubbly **** who cant be real with himself or those around him. Everybody drags everybody down. The end.

Edit: I've now watched season 2 of this show and boy howdy was my first take on this one spot on. now I see tons of people who loved the show in the beginning for being quote unquote apolitical now hating the show simply because one of the main characters is explicitly racist. news flash people in real life sometimes pretend that they're not racist when in private they take every opportunity to exhibit just that type of behavior. And when you give people power they exercise power on a bias. This show is satire but it holds the mirror to society while being satire. I still hate the majority of these characters I still hate the majority of these developments but I'll be damned if these character representations are not based in reality. Some folks are mad about the writing of this show saying it's lazy. But it's supposed to be based in our reality so why wouldn't things from our reality be in their reality every aspect of what's going on in that show I've seen in reality and if you haven't then perhaps you need to spend some time outside of the books and in the real world.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really like Karl Urban, when he is not in crappy movies like Hangman. And I also greatly enjoyed "You're the worst", so decided to pick up The Boys after Aya Cash joined the crew, because superheroes arent really my thing and Urban alone wasn't enough to convince me.

Overall its really good. I enjoyed the humor, action and CGI. Homelander is a very good antagonist and Butcher is a great antihero character. I liked secondary characters as well. Main couple though is... ok I guess, not a big fan. I give this an 8 for 2 reasons - 1. Giant plotholes, especially concerning security at Vought and the fact that in superhero world everyone up to god himself can be blackmailed by a phone video. I get it, it's 2020, technology, pen/phone/tweet is mightier than a sword blablabla, but its getting kind of ridiculous. Everyone and their mother is being either blackmailed by videos or gets in trouble because of them - Gecko, Starlight, Homelander, Butcher etc etc. Also, CCTV is either non-existent in this universe or is completely ignored by everyone and only utilized only when plot requires it. 2. Aya Cash's character, her vaguely explained and mary-sue like character (why Edgar brought her, knowing about her past? why didnt he remove her as soon as she started anti-Vought campaign? what happened after she disappeared in 1979 and until she reappeared 40 years later? Why was she put in charge of Sage Cove) and her dive into politics closer to the end of season 2. I get it, politics are a part of everyday life, but the message can be more subtle, I want to watch a tv series about superheroes, not talk show about Trump and AOC.

Also I was mildly put off by the actor who plays Frenchie. My sister is married to a Frenchman, and even my very basic French tells me that he is not a French guy, and that influences my immersion. The actor himself is doing a great job though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

If you're into tales of betrayal, corruption, abuse of power, and the like then you'll love this like most everyone else. "The Boys" is a series where S02 can't come soon enough. My main nits have to do with lost opportunities in dialogue, like near the end where a character is telling his unknowing kid "I'm your father," now that could've been an epic play on the classic Darth Vader line but they totally whiffed it. There are little disappointments like that throughout. (originally posted IMDB 9/8/19) Expand

The action is very well directed and the special effects feel cinematic (when normally in tv shows it can feel cheap). And of course, the cerry on top: real, believable, not forced social critics. Anyone blasting 1 star displeasure as ‘immature’ --- SHAME ON YOU! Since we weren’t surveyed, this provides an effective medium to express our disdain towards the decision makers at amazon thereby improving the likelihood they won’t repeat these mistakes during season 3 (which has already been renewed). Although I disapprove of the release schedule, what irks me the most is the lack of transparency. I am not the only person duped into believing that this season would be released congruently. Streaming services are becoming aware that middle America patterns their subscription habits around the service release schedules. Couple months on this one, then a couple on that. I can’t afford all of them simultaneously. If amazon was clear that a weekly release schedule was there plan, I would have postponed my membership for another month and enjoyed bingeing the season entirely within ONE Billing Cycle. I’m not the world’s richest man. I’m a single mother struggling with reduced hours during a pandemic. That’s why I’m pissed. You baited me into TWO Billing cycles instead of ONE. Decision wasn’t for ‘”weekly conversations” it was a Ca$h Grab. Expand

It has been one of the best superheroes shows ever produced. If you are soft and get offended then I highly recommend you don't watch this show at all. The first season of The Boys is excellent and I think it's flawless besides the unnecessary sex scenes that occur. The show is dark and funny while having fantastic dialogue to carry the show forward. The fight scenes are actually pretty good and better than all the CW shows but below the action tier of the MCU/DC movies. Absolutely diabolical with the first season being a 9.9/10 . The second season is where it kind of drops as it isn't as good as the first season but the season finale was so good that it deserves an Emmy for that episode alone. The first 5 episodes feel stiff and stretched out at times with no improvement with the characters occurring. Then the last three is the final run where it all comes down to the clock of saving each other and shows the fall of a powerful organization in a realistic way with the most well-done shocks. The character development is done properly at the end of the season in a well good way besides Huighe. I feel like the show kind of walks away from him on the time especially since he was the main character in season 1. Season two is overall of 8.7/10. Last regards are Antony Starr deserves an award for his performance as Hoemlander as he kills it in both seasons as you don't know when the switch with the flip with the character not knowing his next move in a unique way of making it normal. Overall a great show and my score are 9.3/10. Can't wait to see where they go for season 3. Expand

Season 2 is just as good if not better than the first, raising the stakes, the action and the emotional connection with the characters. Props to Antony Starr who is phenomenal. He eats up every scene with a genuinely eerie, terrifying sense.

The best "superhero" tv show I have ever watched

Every character is really complex and makes me wanna know more about them every time they are on the screen. Plus, there are a lot of storylines that advance during every episode and this gives the impression that the episodes are way longer than they really are and it never gets boring.

This show is a breath of fresh air from the classic superhero shows and movies, taking a totally different approach on supes and answering the question: what if superman was real and he was treated like a god?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first season is written by a genius. The ambiguous relationship between two of the evil characters is incredibly nuanced and doesn't cease to amaze.
Sadly, that's the only positive thing about the show. Don't get me wrong: if you are woke, it will be a full 10 for you.
This is a show about strong women punishing worthless, stupid, cowardly men or Trump follower caricatures.
Men are privileged worthless pricks, as exemplified by The Deep and Homelander, among others. No redemption for The Deep: being male he has no good qualities whatsoever, he's a complete tool, he goes from one defeat to the next and is supposedly a comic relief. Might even work, if he were not so politically charged, with no subtlety at all. Tghe spirit of the time, I guess.
Hughie, one of the main characters, is possibly the only "good" white male in the show. He's also completely castrated: an annoying, gutless nobody that would never get a bombshell like Starlight, in one thousand years. He's a little feminist lapdog, he even chastises Butcher for using c*nt as an insult, and Lamplighter for watching porn and having sex with eager young women ("Not cool, dude!"). Really, I wanted him to die so badly along the show - but of course, being such a doormat, he's the only male model that's acceptable to the woke creators, and so he is actually rewarded.
Women are strong and always win, unless they are right-leaning or christian. They are the ones that save the day at the end of the show, when men have failed miserably on all fronts (and in case you missed it, Frenchie remarks it openly). The very last two scenes are the ultimate, sordid humiliation for Homelander, and the apotheosis for the super congresswoman, a powerful heroine who triumphs on all counts (together with colonel Mallory, Maeve, Elena, Starlight and probably more females I can't recall right now) and deals lethal justice to men. Did you miss the obvious? There is not ONE good male superhero, while female superheroes are either good or can at least redeem themselves, unless they are on the wrong end of the political spectrum.
Even Butcher's wife reminds him that she was the better shot years ago, just to drive home the point that women are better at EVERYHTING.
There are so many examples of toxic fathers seeded along the show! Hughie's father is a worthless moron without a spine, Frenchie's father stole him from his mother and would burn him with cigarettes daily. Mesmer is a toxic father who doesn't give a **** about his daughter. Homelander reminds Maeve of a man she killed, who had shot his wife and had a gun at the head of his daughter. Maeve's father betrayed her trust giving her Compund V, just like Deep's (also Starlight's mother, but guess what: she's the only one of the three who's forgiven in the end).
Most of all, Butcher's father is the absolute worst because he shows "toxic masculinity", and therefore Butcher has inherited his curse, becoming another toxic male. Not to mention Homelander who is just as bad an influence. It's continuously implied that the best way to raise a child is with his mother and away from his father, because mothers are good and would sacrifice anything for their children. In case you don't get the message, they openly state that a child raised without his mother becomes a monster. Also, male children should be emasculated to remove toxicity from them, and punished if they show any hint of non-submissive personality (Homelander's son and his "hate jar"). The only case in which it's okay to apply extreme, capital violence, is against non-woke people. In that case, it's completely justified, delightful and even funny.
I hope this woke frenzy runs dry soon and some movie or TV series that isn't pure propaganda against white men eventually surfaces. For now, the outlook is pretty grim.

But I cannot wait to see our fantastically written, exceptionally executed, morally flawed characters 'Supes' or Humans in Season 2. Avoiding all spoilers for this as I truly believe a fan of the genre whether it be comics, movies old or new should really watch it.

This was a breath of fresh air. The writing of this show was on par with some of the best Pilot seasons we have gotten. After all of the Glimmering and Shinning portrayals of the 'Superhero' in current media it is good to see a point of view where we watch them being just as flawed and messed up as we can be. This makes sense considering they are existing in a world based on rules humans have created and hence would by default glorify and pursue everything that we covet/desire secretly or other wise.

As much as I LOVE 'DC' my distaste for the DCEU is probably on par with the same. Snyder does have talent but I believe what this Show pulls off successfully is what he was going for, but unfortunately his own ego and heady themes overpowered the writing. It is downright funny to think in retrospect of people name-calling/labeling those who did not like DCEU and it's so called gritty realism, I bet MCU and or DCEU lovers and all alike will really find entertainment and satisfaction is this gritty, relatively realistic sometimes disturbing take on the 'Superhero' genre.

The comic has a rich, unique and very interesting history. As always, movies end up taking that wealth of history trying to improve it, assuming that they are better than the original author, to prove once again that they are useless and unable to improve or even match the original work. Movie writers are so bad at their job that a lots of new movies are only reboots or remakes of old movies. I guess they butcher (pun intended) stories like this in order to justify their position and salary. Why they just dont change the title to something different so we dont assume this have to do anything with the comic? Expand
