    Spader is great, but they must be paying him a fortune to get him to act opposite one of the blandest, lamest "actresses" in television history. How she got cast I'll never know. And the rest of the cast is not much better, though to be fair the mediocre writing does them no favours.     James Spader is the only reason this show is worth watching at all. The critics of america seem to collectively have been drugged or bribed to give this show such glowing reviews. Most plot lines in every episode are utterly predictable. The whole Tom Keen story ark is very predictable after just a few episodes. The characters in the show do some surprisingly stupid things just to keep the plot alive. Consistency seems to be VERY hard. People are moving between D.C. and New York in a few minutes. EVERY american citizen has had it's DNA recorded in a government database somewhere.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sorry couldn't get past the first episode. I stopped at the scene at the house where she finds her husband strapped in a chair with tape. Right from the trailer, i already decided I didn't like this show and wasn't going to watch but my friend convinced me to. I think this show is too dramatic, but that would not be a problem if the acting was able to rise to occasion. the scene where she finds her husband captured in the house was just too bad. Shows like this piss me off: Reminds me of "The Following". Find a very dramatic plot-line but don't bother finding actors who can convincingly carry out the plot line and don't bother making the show as realistic as possible tone-wise and plot-wise. This show is for people who just want cheap entertainment and don't want to think or reason as they watch.… Expand

    This series is astonishingly unrealistic and also completely derivative of previous works.

    Spader's acting is the only redeeming aspect of the series.

    It's not terrible but it's story is a little self serving and they pull conspiracies out of thin air. It's a mindlessly violent, over a exaggerated spy drama... About non-spies. Is it a procedural.. Is there a meaningful story arc there somewhere? Not that I can see. Save yourself some time and watch Homeland instead (if you haven't already). Spader is the only redeeming part of the show for me.

    Started off so well and found Reddington to be a great character BUT the acting in general, especially by Agent Keen, is terrible. The concept is great but week in week out take down of super villains is pretty unbelievable - feels like it was trying to be Dexter but without the clever sub plots and story lines. Essentially college level writing.     Spader's talent is wasted on terrible writing, audio and an illogical script.

    Completely and utterly ridiculous but remains vaguely entertaining because of it. The storylines make absolutely no sense and the FBI agents are possibly the most useless employees I have ever seen in any organisation, in any TV show or film, in all of history. Reddington only sounds vaguely intelligent    Spader's talent is wasted on terrible writing, audio and an illogical script.

    Completely and utterly ridiculous but remains vaguely entertaining because of it. The storylines make absolutely no sense and the FBI agents are possibly the most useless employees I have ever seen in any organisation, in any TV show or film, in all of history. Reddington only sounds vaguely intelligent juxtaposed with the brainless FBI officers who apparently have no common sense or goal apart from dishing out dodgy one liners whilst being continually made a fool of by the supposed genius Reddington. A prime example of this stupidity is handsome blonde agent Donald Ressler. At one point he completely loses sight of his mission and decides to repeatedly punch an unconscious man in the face for no apparent reason - simultaneously ludicrous and hilarious.

    The amount of times the FBI let people escape is also a great source of humour along with numerous flaws in the bad guy's motives. In one episode we see 'The Courier' shoot an FBI vehicle head on with an assault rifle in the middle of a public highway. Soon after the FBI crash into his car leaving themselves dazed and vulnerable in the drivers and passenger seats... What will the deadly Courier decide to do with them? Well, the man who 'leaves no evidence' and 'kills all parties if a mission is compromised' decides to walk straight past them with his assault rifle and hide behind a wall, letting them survive and eventually catch him.

    This is like the Flash Gordon of crime drama. Charmingly terrible.    … Expand

    The Blacklist is basically about James Spader being a jerk to everyone around him because everyone else knows less than him about his secret plans of being a master-criminal. He's smug about most everything and, because of the plot, he's always right about things and they mostly go his way eventually seemingly no matter how bad they might look.     Along with alot of other reviews on here I agree that James Spader is a great fun to watch. Ever since a kid and seeing Stargate I have enjoyed his work. It steals plot from 24, Alias, and other spy shows, but MeganAlong with alot of other reviews on here I agree that James Spader is a great fun to watch. Unfortunately, and despite Spader's performance as the all-knowing mastermind, this show is the complete opposite of Homeland in terms of a realistic counter-terror fiction. It steals plot from 24, Alias, and other spy shows, but Megan Boone is no Jennifer Garner and Klattenhoff is no Cooper. I think if the task force surrounding such a highpowered terrorist and national criminal was larger, had more reach, and perhaps more star power then maybe the show could carry some of its preposterous plotlines a bit more effectively. If Klattenhoff was the sidekick to a more gravitas-inspiring actor then he wouldn't seem so over his head. Suspects who jump off balconies or out windows and yet scramble to their feet as if they just got out of bed, the same white dude fbi agent (Klattenhoff) as the only one chasing suspects, altogether unsubstantial operatives from all branches of the US government for many of the incidents that are in the show... These are just a few of the 'shake your head' moments the show likes to provide viewers.… Expand

    Impressed so far. Will have to see how this shows continues to play out. Spader's character is very interesting but some the acting is not. But the story still grabs my attention

    Who can not love James Spader? He is such a good actor taking command of any scene he is in. The show manages to keep my interest with decent characters, good action, and plot twists. I will keep watching this one.

    The show has a great plot and, with James Spader as the leading actor, should not be worried of being anywhere near canceled as long as the story keeps being solid. The procedural one-case-at-a-time style is working well because there's a side plot that is potentially very related to the show's two lead characters. Great show!

    Lizzy Keen acting stinks, Only reason I watch is Spader. When are you going to replace Agent Keen actress? Megan Boone is really bad for this role. Find a strong actress for this role and this series can go very long with Spader.

Like everyone else is saying, James Spader is literally the only good thing in the show, I find that seeing the FBI being dumber than one character is overly done and boring, because then the only good thing is Reddington, everyone tries to say Boone is a good actress, which she is but her character Liz Keen makes you want to slam your head against a wall, and doesn't grasp your interest at all, it's only though Reddington's efforts that she even stands out.

    Honestly White Collar does a better job at making FBI agents seem like they're worth watching, because none of them are portrayed as dumb. It's one thing to make an individual stand out, but to make everyone else seem dumber in comparison or not as interesting is what doesn't make this show stand out much. And none of the supporting characters or side characters stick out, or make you feel like WOW good villain, but it's just good acting, and it CAN be way better, though it isn't, like at all.

    The best villains are in Criminal Minds, and that's because they're shown as people, but overall, in terms of plot and characters, this show is not doing anyone justice. Especially when it comes to Keen's fiance, that plot-line and why Reddington keeps helping her, are the ones that drive you mad, not because you want to know, but because they keep dragging it out, like you know in each episode somebody is gonna be thinking about it, even if they don't need to, and all you're gonna keep saying is "please, just stop." which they won't be doing ever.

    I don't understand how anyone says anyone other than Reddington is worth it, because even though some characters are nice to watch, no one manages to catch your interest but Reddington, not even the list is interesting, even though that's what the show is named after. Like I feel if they'd named the show Reddington, and made him the main character and showed his life story, that would have been much better than showing us the FBI who can't match his intelligence nor wit in certain areas.

    I also wish that if the FBI couldn't catch the people on the list for a long time, that it shouldn't be easy for Reddington to find them, it's like saying the FBI doesn't know how to do undercover or its jobs, but one man can. It also should take some time to find the people on the list, and we should be seeing more agents rather than the same ones, and getting into their life stories, like I can learn a lot about a person without needing to watch 12 episodes which could take the span of a max of 2 months in their timeline. Introducing interesting characters within the FBI would be better, even if we don't like them. Otherwise this show should just be called 'Reddington and Keen' and then we won't have to keep skirting the issue of is he or is he not her father. I don't know, and I don't care.

    I've lost interest after the first few episodes, I tried to check out the summary of later episodes or seasons to see if I was doing the show injustice, but I'm not, not really anyway, because I tried, and it backfied, cause I ended up dying to finish the episode so I would've have to see Keen talk or any other FBI agent. And maybe its my opinion, but it's not as good as people keep claiming it to be, I apologize if this offends fans. And I hope this helps non-fans and saves people the effort of having to watch with so many expectations and then feeling bitter when those expectations blow up.    … Expand

Diego is also a horrifically flawed character. I think that this series shows a total dysfunctionality of the writing staff. I truly believe that the irrational behavior of the characters probablyJames Spacer- Awesome.     The Blacklist stands out. There are so many new shows this season, so many comedies, so many "cop" dramas that are "different" but this one is truly different. It's a really interesting show that I can see going somewhere. On the other hand, some parts of the acting are just really blah, they just make you go, "Really?"

    I'm giving a 5, and that is purely because of Spader. Without him this show is pretty much unwatchable.

    I can't get passed all the glaring holes in this show. The writing for the characters themselves is good, I will give it that. However the story is just, I mean cmon. Even if I was to really turn off my brain and watch this show, drool slobbering all over myself, with the most    I'm giving a 5, and that is purely because of Spader. Without him this show is pretty much unwatchable.

Even if I was to really turn off my brain and watch this show, drool slobbering all over myself, with the most uninquisitive gaze I could, I would still catch glaring continuity and story holes ALL OVER THE PLACE.

    How on Earth do people watch shows like this and not question something that has happened literally every 5 seconds. Its amazing to me really.

    Its one of those shows that tries to look "professional", and really Spader takes this idea a long way with his performances alone.. however so much else with this show just feels very amateur. The way the screens and typing and computer overlays are done are pretty bad.. the special effects, pretty bad.

    The music in some spots seems so forced.. like, they use decent songs, that are classic/memorable tracks, but they use them in ways that just don't fit the scenes, and in a way actually are pretentious. Again, like they are trying too hard to be "cool" by using a particular track where they do, but it just sounds stupid alot of the time. Also, the mixing between these songs and the rest of the show audio is often imbalanced.. at least, I noticed it when I watched.

    Overall, the best part of the show are the actors.. I find that the acting literally saves this show, and it has a decent cast. If the actors were provided a better story and overall if the production on this show was better, I'd likely continue watching it. Alas, with the way it is, its just too flawed for me.    … Expand

    An enjoyable show with some good performances, especially James Spader. Harry Lennix on the other hand is really bad - he delivers his lines like he is constipated and is reading them from an auto-cue. Not since the dreadful David Harewood in Homeland have we seen such dismal acting. Lennix's character should be killed off as soon as possible!

In one session where Berlin comes on the line, the chemistry sparks and we can see a real action. Spader needs more strong companions with him, say actors with Ed Harris or Jack Nicholson talents.     This is probably the earliest TV Show i started to watch, i must say its was very good. But few seasons down the line, it became pretty boring and predictable with the Blacklisters and I started to loose interest. The only thing keeping this show up the the secrets of Raymond Redington and Elizabeth's troubled and complicated history, which i believe has been dragged on for too long. AsThis is probably the earliest TV Show i started to watch, i must say its was very good. But few seasons down the line, it became pretty boring and predictable with the Blacklisters and I started to loose interest. The only thing keeping this show up the the secrets of Raymond Redington and Elizabeth's troubled and complicated history, which i believe has been dragged on for too long. As mentioned, now I'm only interested about knowing how the Redington-Elizabeth relationship will end with Redington probably, being the No.1 on the Blacklist.… Expand

    I have always enjoyed James Spader in his TV roles. In this role I find him more of a updated Columbo with his humor. I still look forward to watching this every week with my husband. I wish Mr. Kaplan was still around and Denbe is perfect. I can't remember what happened to Agnes? I sure hope there is another season and the writer finds a new direction.     I am an ENORMOUS fan of James Spader and try to watch this show as an 'entertainment' but the script is often so irrational, it becomes laughable. The cast is strong with the notable exception of Megan Boone whose performance is weak and wooden. She has one of those faces you just want to hit with a shovel (perhaps then it would be less bland and more animated).

The stupid mention of watch out for your husband is getting really old. That foreign mole is irritating too. Can hardly understand her when she talks. The plots are getting just too far fetched.     Needs more Spader; less of the woman. If you didn't know better, you'd think the woman was the star of this show. I'm fading fast on the woman and her boyfriend story line. They need to move on from that. And more Spader! After all he is the star, but the show's becoming a yawn because his part is so small compared to the woman (his daughter in the show). I'll give it a bit longer toNeeds more Spader; less of the woman. If you didn't know better, you'd think the woman was the star of this show.     I don't know if you remember James Spader as Alan Shore from Boston Legal, but allow me to tell you that seeing him in court was almost like seeing Shakespeare in person. Now, I'm not personally a fan of Shakespeare, but we can't deny his brilliance and all the works that have stemmed from his. Alan Shore's speeches were shakesperian in that they were so brilliant and had so much longevityI don't know if you remember James Spader as Alan Shore from Boston Legal, but allow me to tell you that seeing him in court was almost like seeing Shakespeare in person. Now, I'm not personally a fan of Shakespeare, but we can't deny his brilliance and all the works that have stemmed from his. Alan Shore's speeches were shakesperian in that they were so brilliant and had so much longevity that if you removed them from their surroundings and just used them as words on a page, they would still be brilliant. Well, Alan Shore is back in the Blacklist as Raymond Reddington. He's every bit as brilliant, as witty and as smug, and let me tell you, James Spader was born to play smug.
    The Blacklist is a highly intelligent new drama about a man so smart, and so dastardly that he has conceived a plot to use the FBI as his own personal hit squad, taking out all of his criminal competition. He walks right into the FBI's HQ, and turns himself in, because he knows his value to them. After all, he's Raymond Reddington, the most wanted man in the world. Genius show, you must watch it.    … Expand

    Blacklist suffers principally from miscasting in the female lead. Megan Boone just doesn't have the earthy toughness of, say, Piper Perabo in Covert Affairs. Her porcelain beauty just doesn't fit. As for Spader, he will always be Spader the actor on screen, as the persona of his characters is eclipsed by the man himself. I've come to think of this as John Wayne Syndrome, and many of ourBlacklist suffers principally from miscasting in the female lead.     Show is good. The only downside is the talent-less performance of Megan Boone. This is one my few reviews that was trigger by this bad acting. I keep wondering why she got this part next to a brilliant Spader. Please find a way to change her for the sake of the show. TEEERRRIBLE

    Amazing story, I'm at episode 6 at the moment at I just can't stop watching. This series has amazing acting and a nice original story. Reddington is amazingly played.

    This is my new favorite show and I enjoy binge watching it! I honestly watched it during my commute and played it through my car speakers. Not the smartest driving habits, but this show is worth it!

    The rest are ok.
    Well except for Jane Alexander who is always awesome, as she always is.
    Whistler from Sneakers[David Strathairn] is not really allowed to expand the horribleness of his character, which makes me sad.
    The same for Alan Alda, he never gets to really make us hate his character.
    And poor Mr. Solomon. He could show us the dark side of supposed human beings if he ever really got the chance. Perhaps in the future.

    But --- PLEASE, somebody pull all those crappy, lazy, horrible parts of songs out of the show. They are the equivalent of "Walk and Talk" sections in other shows. when the "W and T" sections happen, we know they are killing time and, perhaps trying to set something up. ---- B-U-T using the parts of songs is just a lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy way for the writers, producers, show runners, and music director to not have to put in any work and just steal.

    In fact, you could say that the Powers that Be or showing they are lazy versions of Spader's Red.

    Has the potential to be great, BUT it sadly looks like it will not live up to it's potential. Conceptually, it is great, but the writing is terrible, nonsensical, and illogical. All the problems are too easily solved by Spader's character, the FBI is portrayed as one big idiot as everyone seems to be out of the loop. Spader's outfit in the opening? WOOF. It was offensively cheesy.

I admit to a huge Spader crush and that could be why I think he is the only thing worth watching on this show.. but the other characters are just plain boring. Pretty, yes but about as exciting and compelling as old ketchup. Not to mention, quite stupid, honestly. In this show, the FBI is barely functioning above a 6th grade logic skills class and while it's satisfying to get some of the answers before the main characters, we shouldn't be getting ALL of them.
    (POSS. SPOILER AHEAD..) Agent Keen is most likely his abandoned daughter from 20 years ago when he went AWOL. It's super obvious right in the pilot. The only people who don't see this are... everyone else in the story! Which is to say, all the FBI agents. All of whom have been recruited during the same 20 year lag where walking while talking meant you had the right stuff to be in the FBI. I am serious, they are just not that bright. Nest to James Spader's main attraction, they just don't live up to his creepy mystery and everyone else comes across as plain and dull next to him. Agent Keen, his daughter, is very pretty and dull. Agent Keen's begrudging partner is also pretty and dull as block-of-wood Agent Ressler ('cause she 'wrestles' with him, get it.. they love the obvious on this show)
    Since episode 1, it would seem that Keen's only acting directions must have been, "have no expression on your face, then at random moments, face the camera and cry...ok, go!" I don't know whether it's the writing or the directing but no one aside from Spader's character is even remotely interesting. Spader is the best part of the show, along with the always wonderful Parminder Nagra who makes the most out of terrible lines and almost no part.     Spader plays an interesting character and his dialogue and delivery are fun to watch. HOWEVER, the violence in the show has become gratuitous and unnecessary. We do not need to see the torture and maiming, the blood splatter and the body parts to know that it has happened. The gore cheapens the product! Spend the time spent on gore on developing more interesting scripts.

    Spader is fantastic, but the surrounding cast is rather underwhelming. This fact falls on the writers as Spader is the only one who can rise above the dullness of the writing. As far as network TV goes, The Blacklist is far better than most, but in my opinion, there's really nothing new about the Blacklist beyond the standard network Police/FBI shows on finds on network tv.

    James Spader is fantastic in this wonderful new drama. Just when it seemed like you had the pilot figured out, another plot twist came into the picture. The pilot had it's moments when it seemed to drag, but luckily they were few and far between! I'm really looking forward to seeing where the writers take this show. It looks very promising.

    Wow, all i can say really is Wow! I don't usually properly follow tv shows and when i do i dont bother watching every single episode but I'm soo hooked on this new show ive made sure to watch every episode and continue like this, I love it!!! Can't wait each week now for the new episodes! :D

    I am in complete agreement with lahonda_99. This show is total garbage. Utterly stupid plot lines. Mediocre acting. The same 2 —and only — agents show up at the right time to save the day. Obviously there have been some serious cutbacks at the FBI!!

    The good folks at NBC were aiming low with this show. And they definitely hit a home run.

    I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series. What's the deal with Keens husband? What is the connection between the two main characters? How about Keen's past? And how will Diego Klattenhoff, playing a FBI cop "in charge", fit into the whole story. So far, so good!    … Expand

    Critics gave this a high score, but to me it was just ok. I really want to see it, but was disappointed in the gruesome violence in the first episode and the ridiculous easy way the guy escapes in the first two episodes. He is under total lockdown, then let out and is able to just walks away without anyone seeing him. Unbelievable.

    Pretty good opening season. It got a bit slow during the middle but quickly picked back up. Stick with it and keep watching. Let's just say that everything is not as it seems... You think that you have the story figured out but there's way more to it.

    After quite a while, a show worth watching on major network. I find this very entertaining and follow the Reddington (Spader) character traits - his way of looking at life. Sometime feel envious, that why I am not like him. I guess thats one of the accomplishment of a show - getting a character you feel for.

    After half season on the way i must say that this series is top notch. Everything is working great, cast, story, action. I am enjoying watching every episode. Megan Boone and James Spader are very good. If they keep it like that, this will be one on the best new series.

    Unbelievable series which seems as if it is going to have a different criminal theme every week. It is linked by James Spader who, ridiculously, is a master criminal dictating actions to the authorities in order for them to catch other criminals. It's all total tosh saved only by Spader himself.

The rest of the cast does a good job with their characters. The show got at it's best when it went to the mythology just like poi. The Tom story line was awesome and it really put the show on another level. The ending was also great and it added even more mysteries to the show. The show is great at adding the right music at the right time. In every episode, there is at least one song. They also makes the best episode promos. Very interesting promos with the right amount of intrigue. The first season offered a lot of mysteries that still need to be addressed, but I think most of them will be revealed in season 2. The best way I can properly describe it would be the intrigue of person of interest yet with a more gritty and realistic setting while also allowing for a character study of Raymond Reddington which reminds me of Game of thrones in the way that when the show wants you to feel a certain way toward a character specifically R.R. (empathy, a sense of envy toward his brilliance, his lifestyle, and his self confidence which stems from his ability too control any situation or person through force of will and wit alone.)     The Blacklist is my favourite new show of 2013, which has seen some tough competition emerge. Character development is brilliant and continually building on the basics that were established early on. Each episode has a different twist that keeps you glued to the show, and James Spader is just the perfect character.

    I rarely get attached to a show or want to write a review, but this show is AMAZING. I was NOT a Spader fan before this show but I am now. It seems he has truly grown into the perfect actor. Whether he is speaking or simply looking at you, in The Blacklist, you feel mesmerized - he has really made the character of Red his own. It seems he has truly grown into the perfect actor. Whether he is speaking or simply looking at you, in The Blacklist, you feel mesmerized - he has really made the character of Red his own. The lead female Megan Boone is okay (I keep seeing her with short hair on a few episodes of Blue Blood) but when both of these two actors come together - the show truly shines. They have wonderful chemistry.

    I am also a fan of Parminder Nagra who was so brilliant in the short lived Alcatraz (also a very good show) and I feel they need to give her a larger role.

    Finally, for those who mention the violence - yes, there is a lot of it, but I think it is an integral part of the plot and moves the action along at a brilliant pace.

    Let's hope they keep this one on for a few years - network TV tends to cancel their good shows way too fast and keep the horrible ones on for years.    … Expand

    I have only enjoyed a hand full of TV shows, as I do not watch cable but I do watch this show through Netflix.
    I only started watching shows in the last year because my wife is doing acting.

    David Spader does a phenomenal job doing what's called minimalist acting, whereas his scenes of emotional portrayal are strong and vibrant because his character is normally stoic. Meaning every facial twitch and motion gives off a lot of his characters intentions. I wouldn't change a thing about him. The back drop of his character is believable as there are individuals who deal in contracting deals of legal and illegal activities. His character is of the illegal nature, who has conjured a very high rank among the black market.

    His daughter Elizabeth Keen is very emotional and actually works very well with David Spaders character and I'll explain why. The character Elizabeth Keen being a very inexperienced profiler and having only schooling as experience explains her emotional hiccups in the story line and play off of David Spaders minimalist acting and actually makes his acting more intense. It is like having a hyper barking out of control chihuahua next to a strong demeanored pit bull whereas the louder and more out of control Megan Boone becomes the more in control David Spader perceptually becomes, the contrast compliments each other. Making his character inevitably more of the leader-esque experienced mastermind type.

    The show is very good in my opinion, seemingly more to do with actions than another show I finished watching a few months ago, Breaking Bad which seemed to lean more on emotional distress than anything else...which definitely took away from the bullet points of the story becoming more of a drama instead of an adventure show which I think it tried to hit.

    The Blacklist to me is a great adventure show that keeps a decent pace. Not to fast and not to slow. Along the way introducing great "villains", from the blacklist. The show could last for a 100 episodes plus, willing the critics and viewership supports it. You might as well back this show now as it would be a shame to look back and wish that there were 5 seasons you could scour through looking for some interesting tales and quips to ponder.    … Expand

    I really want to like this show but why are they making the agents so gulliable? I am ten minutes into Season 1 Episode 4 and I so grateful that these idiots aren't protecting me. I really hope they stop dummying things down.
    A FBI profile that can't tell Spader is her father??? Come on... I knew it after the first episode.     The Blacklist is a fascinating show. I was captured by it from the first episode. However, it was a big mistake to kill off Agent Malik. She was a big part of the show for me. What was the problem? Did the writers think she competed too much with Liz for our affections? Her death took a lot out of the show.

    This show has crept into my top 10 as i have watched it more and more. Not since 24 i have i seen a show that keeps you watching as well as The Blacklist. I am sorry to the people who feel this show is "unrealistic". 80% of the most popular shows and movies are not actually possible. Get over yourselves.

On the surface this show is ingenious and was originally very addictive. The writers of this show have a way of developing the bad guy that would put Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to shame. Some of these guys have committed acts and exhibit personalities like you have never seen, but they all fail in comparison to Red. The show is extremely addicting, but it is somewhat narrowly focused for a continuous show. What I mean by this, is that the show features continuously running story lines and you have to see every episode to keep up, but these are such a small piece of each episode, that the series almost plays as though it were episonic. Some of these story lines run in circles and drag out throughout entire seasons, long after the audience has figured them out, as a viewer that can be quite frustrating. All that aside, James Spader is the star and he is as good as he has ever been. Most actors come across their career defining roles early on, and its somewhat unusual for someone to find the character they will forever be associated with, after they've been doing this for decades, but much like with Anthony Hopkins and Hannibal Lechter, James Spader has found his role. Spader will be forever known as Red and for good reason. The bottom line, sometimes the story lines are frustrating, but James Spader is as good as it gets, particularly on a network show. The writing isn't always amazing, but the character development for the Blacklist is top notch. This show is unusual in that it's more about the personalities than it is about the actual stories, but that really is the point isn't it, something different?… Expand

    To further his daughter's FBI career he only wants to speak to her. Daughter? Is that a spoiler? Nope: it is so obvious dished out that it is probably a red herring. Yes, everything suggests she is, but she isn't. Haha. Outwitted you there, laddy.

    About fifteen minutes into the first episode and somehow the band of criminals figured out not only when the FBI would pick up a girl that is threatened by them, but also know what route they take so they can spring a trap on them during broad daylight smack bang in the middle of the city that is so glaringly obvious that the FBI ignores it out sheer disbelief. Is this an ambush? Nah.. it might look like one, but it isn't. It can't be! So it isn't! Not only is this ambush thus sprung, but somehow the criminals know exactly in which of the row of black cars the girl and our heroine sit.

    But I am getting ahead of myself. Let's go back to five minutes into the series: our heroine, once criminal mastermind dad has asked for her, gets picked up by a helicopter and two black FBI cars and a score of agents just when leaving her house. This while she is late for her first day at work. What coincidence.

    By the way. Did you know she was a profiler? Criminal mastermind? Profiler? Yes, it is and it isn't.

    So twenty minutes in and our heroine's house and husband are violated by the villain the FBI is chasing.
    How did he know where she was? And that he was alone? And that she would come in alone? That there was nobody to guard hubby?
    Because he is omniscient, of course. Or someone told him. You can alway spin some kind of tale.
    So that is where I stopped watching.

    This is a series that is going to dish you surprises and coincidences that make up for the lack of a well-written plot. This will be filled with an unrelenting stream of deus ex machina. Poof something happens. Why? How? Wel because hubby is actually a sleeper. What? Because someone with the FBI is leaking information. Huh? Because Martians eavesdrop on everyone on the planet.
    But foremost: because the writers write themselves into corners and need to save the day by illogical plot twists so the series can go on.

    Next to James Spader the cast is lacking, especially the heroine. Spader might make for a Hannibal Lector substitute, but Megan Boone holds no candle to Jodie Foster. Wasn't there someone else?

    Show was ok, until episode 10 of first season. Who wrote that?! Whoever that was spoiled the whole thing. Completely unbelievable characters and actions. Episode 9 was fine, I was in and curious of what`s going to happen. And that episode 10 happened. Horrible writing. It was such a bad experience that I had to write it somewhere :)

    Ok boys and girls, the major networks can produce and intelligent, intriguing, captivating show when they want to as well. James Spader is as good in this as any actor in any current series, period I love the character Red. He is not alone though, whoever plays Lizzie is great too and I like the rest of the cast as well. The plots are fun and the central theme keeps viewers guessing. ThisOk boys and girls, the major networks can produce and intelligent, intriguing, captivating show when they want to as well.     By far, this is the best show on TV. I looked forward to Monday evenings. It is going to be a long wait until fall. I have them recorded and watch then often. The dialog and acting is a TEN.

    Really a fun show, even if the female lead is a bit over the top. She is tempered in the second season, though the ongoing sub-plot is a stretch. Still, it's so much better than most of what's on the air, and James Spader is delicious.
