Can this show get any funnier? I even laugh when I hear Howard's mother screaming from another room. I laugh from start to finish as this ensemble cast is simply the best. The writers on this series earn their payday and then some as each line is funnier than the next. I do miss it not being on Monday with those other strong comedy shows. I do not watch the other shows on Thursday.

The dialogues are funny, and are supervised by real physicists.
The plot is nothing exceptional, but all together, the world nerd, the girl next door, and the brilliant minds of the characters, make this show unique.

    Sheldon's character is brilliant.

A hilarious show with well thought out characters and episodes. Although the jokes about nerd culture won't appeal to all, and the sex references seem out of place it's a show I can recommend. And has me dying to watch season 2.

Sad that this show has a lower rating then that dreck that calls itself "how I met your mother".

This is totally the funniest show on TV. Sometimes the jokes seem repeated, but they're still funny. Sheldon makes me laugh my ass out. Raj, Howard, Leonard, and Penny are also funny. The way Raj and Howard react to Leonard's mom accusing them of being in a homosexual relationship seems a little homophobic to me, but other than that, this is a Chuck Lorre masterpiece.

Watch Season two. It was the best. This is comedy that many people don't even understand, comedy that is character based. This is my favorite show. This is my favorite show. In order to get the jokes, to understand the humor, you have to know the characters. Know who they are. If you watch this show, pay attention! Listen to what they say! They're not just stock nerds, they are good and entertaining characters. Also you should understand at least some of the science. The situations in this show aren't funny. It's the characters and the way they interact and interpret things that is funny. In season 2 especially, there were several laugh-out-loud moments per episode. Jim Parsons as Sheldon steals the show, Johnny Galeki (Leonard) and Kaley Cuoco (Penny) are also excellent. The first three seasons were nearly perfect. Season four and later, everything starts to deteriorate. It's still a better show than average, but not by a lot. There is a stronger female presence, which I'm sure was done primarily to even out the men and women for the viewers that thought that it was a guy's show. It wasn't. The addition of these characters (namely Amy and Bernadette) was not necessary, and generally takes a lot away from the show. The whole gang of geniuses (except for Sheldon) slowly get dumber and more normal as the show goes on, with some lines or visuals to remind you that they're supposed to be smart. They were in seasons 1-3... but now they are more or less normal. Those are my only real problems, otherwise this show is a brilliant mix of fantasy and reality, as well as well thought out character based humor for the first three seasons... and a few nice moments in the later three. Not to offend anyone, but any negative reviews you see probably just don't understand the humor, or maybe think the show is too far-fetched from reality. This is not a sitcom. A sitcom throws moderately wacky characters into whacky situations. This is character based humor, which throws truly special characters into dull situations with their personalities the only source of laughs... albeit a great one. Expand

I think that what really keeps the show entertaining are the actors. Simon Helberg (Howard), Johnny Galecki (Leonard), Kunal Nayyer (Raj) and of course Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper). Yet out of all of them, Jim's character really stands out. Him playing a gigantic know-it-all who still doesn't tend to get the hang of sarcasm really brings the show to life. The show's portrayal of true geekery is dead on and the jokes requires geek knowledge or at least exposure to true geekdom to understand. The fact that some of the "professional" reviewers rated the show so low, and their reviews, shows that they have no idea what they're talking about. As a self confessed geek, this show is just hilarious. The jokes are not mean or cruel, they just have an element of truth in them, situations or character traits are often taken to the extreme of course, which always makes for the best comedy.

very funny show, Sheldon is my favorite character. The jokes are not as scientific as people say, so anyone can get them. Unlike some "comedy" shows this show does not loose its appeal by over dramatization

None of the characters are likeable, particularly the girl next door who is the most annoying straight man character I have ever run across. I agree with another review that said that the fans of this show are all the worst types - people who like to claim that they are "geeks" or "so wierd" because they like superheroes or Star Wars and are socially inept. I feel like my brain cells die a little every time I am forced to watch this in someone else's home and politely avoid ranting about it until I get into the car. I see myself as a geek. In fact I even think this show is not nerdish enough. Why do they play D&D on a board? Why not Gurps or Shadowrun? Why do they play X-BOX 360 when they could be playing old classics or dwarf fortress? I can identify myself with the characters in the show, especially with Sheldon and Leonard but for my taste there is still not enough nerd culture in this show. OnI see myself as a geek. However despite all of this i would still recommend the big bang theory to anyone who hasn't yet seen it because until you see how repetitive the jokes become there are some genuinely funny moments in The Big Bang Theory and even now i still watch every episode because every so often there will be a properly funny joke to make you giggle and it is for that reason that i would heartily recommend the show.

Critics don't apparently like this very much, but I thought it is a funny show, a bit repetitive altogether, with not many plot twists if at all. The show itself isn't so bad. The characters are funny in their own way, although they are very stereotyped (but maybe that's what make them fun). The real annoying thing in this show is the omnipresent audience laughter.

    "Can physics be funny?"

I suppose we'll never know. The question should be "can a poorly conceived sitcom from a team of hacks be funny?" but that might be a little too obvious, even for this show's target audience.

Relies heavily on laugh tracks, cheap jokes, and star wars references.

I tried to watch an episode of the show to see what all of the hype was about. Unfortunately, what I found wasn't very good. The canned laughter seemed very forced, the delivery of the jokes, which were mostly weak in their own right, were not well handled by the actors. And I understand the intellectual humor. This show isn't unfunny because the jokes don't make sense or because they reference video games and science. It's unfunny because most of the jokes are just the references. Simply mentioning protons or some 26-dimension formula can't carry a joke in its own right.

The major sin in the series, though, are the characters. At the start of the series, we meet the two guys and they're presented as socially alienated. Why? Because they're nerds, and that makes them social outcasts. They later meet Penny, whose job is to not understand what anyone else is saying and to be hot. Kinda degrading to see that the main female representation of this show is dumbed down (no pun intended) to a dumb blonde. I had hope when I heard there was two more male characters, hoping for a better set of characters, but they were even worse, outright SAYING VERBATIM that someone couldn't talk to girls because he is a nerd. Having a character like this is acceptable, but having almost every joke in the series be about how four out of the five main characters is a nerd and likes nerd stuff is putting way too many eggs in one basket.

Maybe it gets better. I wouldn't know. I stopped watching after the first episode because I honestly couldn't stand seeing it. And if it's hurting me to watch it, and I would take no pleasure in seeing another episode, then I won't. It doesn't have any redeeming qualities. I can honestly say that there was nothing in it that I enjoyed. If you're reading this before watching, then I say that you should not watch this show.

If you are geeky yourself, it's as insulting as possibly could be. It's also by Chuck Lorre, who can't make comedy worth a damn yet manages to somehow run endless seasons of his shows to cause us cancer.

Humor is both banal and punctuated by an incessant laugh track. "I watched Star Wars today." laugh track.* "How did you like it?" *laugh track again* "It didn't have enough Spock." *hilarious laughing *omfg* Not an actual joke, but that's how it feels listening to the "humor" in this show if you are geeky.

And of course, Sheldon. He's clearly OCD and autistic, but hey, let's make the show about him doing funny things and saying things in a monotone. He actually is impaired by his issues relatively seriously, and you can see hints of an actual show in this if they just treated that respectfully instead of making him a cartoonish buffoon, but no, Lorre again, lets take the easy way out.

The rest of the cast are morons. You have milquetoast "normal" leonard, who is spineless and pandering, the smarmy wolfowitz who lives with his mother in his thirties, raj, who we are never sure is gay or not, and is an indian stereotype, and penny, who is the basic girl. There are others, but god, they are annoying. The actors really try their best, but the material is so horrid it can't help.

    Just avoid.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I first heard about TBBT in 2010 by a geek coworker who praised it a lot. Since we share the same geeky hobbies I watched the three seasons together and it was original for that time. A group of young smart nerd people who struggle in everyday life chores and awkward social endeavors.

Sheldon was an original character that time who was funny at first then it becomes so irritating season after another. Amy, his girlfriend, while she doesn't have the looks, is a very kind-hearted and warm person who doesn't deserve someone arrogant and selfish as Sheldon. She worked hard on changing him, which she particularly succeeded to as you can see Sheldon is becoming less awkward and demeaning, but he still has his ego so high he bullies and ridicules her work every other episode. Sheldon is just a selfish brat who wants a caretaker, from his mom who treats her badly and criticizes her beliefs to Leonard who had to deal with him for years before moving out, and now he can't live without Amy who uses her because she loves him. If Sheldon was a real person, I would punch him hard.

Leonard is that (mostly normal) guy who was hitting on his above average and out of his league neighbor Penny and he could somehow make her his girlfriend. You can see later how pale and dry their relationship is which the writer rushed them into commitment and you see their story arc is done without any development. However, I see their story very true to life because there's nothing common between Leonard and Penny and they ended up a boring couple. Heck, you can see Kaley Cuocco's face (the actress as Penny) is bored and tired moving from one scene to another. You clearly see there is no intimacy at all between the couple later after season 5, not even a passionate kiss or cuddling, which clearly shows how the relationship was pushed on. If Leonard and Penny were real, Penny would definitely be cheating on Leonard with her exes and Chads, or with her boss at her job as a sales manager who she knows she's not good at her job but getting promotions.

Howard may be the wittiest character between this herd but he later became the laughing stock of the group with everyone making him a joke, even his wife, Bernadette. She's always angry and shouting and yelling without or for very banal reasons. There's nothing likeable about her either with her immature behavior and doesn't cope well with the group. She even looks indifferent about the group and doesn't even like them and feels she's forced to be with them because of her husband, Howard.

Raj is the worst character I have ever seen. He doesn't even act like a man. He's a wuss who is always reacting like a child and cannot take a decision by himself. He dated several gorgeous women who are definitely out of his league and he yet complained "he doesn't feel the love." It suits him right to be left many seasons without a girlfriend because he simply doesn't deserve but an arranged marriage from his homeland.

I won't talk about the cringe laugh tracks we hear every 7 seconds. It's disrespectful to audience who spend time watching it and forcing them to laugh on unfunny sentences.

What people keep asking is how this show is still airing. I would say money laundry hands down. Reading how much the actors earn for bad acting and what kind of lifestyle they live in raises too many questions. Don't compare this show to FRIENDS. FRIENDS had its ups and downs but it was a masterpiece in every episode and it ended gracefully.

TBBT is one of those shows that screenwriters and producers have wet dreams about. A seemingly simple premise that has almost limitless possibilities, allowing the core cast introduced at the start to explore their characters, have the writers develop their backstories and nuances, whilst also allowing for new characters to come along and join in with the fun.

The original TV pilot though was a mess and, if you've ever seen it, you'll know why! The main problem was the casting.... There was no chemistry, and the jokes became flat.
The show wasn't picked up, but undeterred the producers decided to give it another shot. After securing the funds to get it back together they looked to re-cast the three main roles....... And hit the jackpot.....

The show revolves around Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), a theoretical physicist specialising in string theory. He's a late twenty-something who has a 2-bed apartment in California and is a non-tenured research scientist at Cal-Tec.

The show revolves around his awkwardness and somewhat child-like naivety that comes from being a social outcast as a child, and his inability to deal with any 'real life' situations.
Needing a room-mate, his subsequent advert is responded to by Leonard Hoffstadter (John Galecki), another Doctor of Physics, but whose specialty resides in theoretic physics.
The two form an unlikely friendship, and an almost symbiotic relationship that is explored through the series.
Leonard helps Sheldon come to understand that people can and do need to change.... Sheldon helps Leonard understand that there are things which you can aspire to, beyond what others expect.

The rest of the main narrative comes from the arrival of a new tenant in the apartment building across the hall, in the (lovely) shape of blonde sex-pot Penny (Kely Cuoco). A mid-twenties, wannabe actress from a Central state, she immediately draws the sexual lust of Leonard.

Along with the arrival of Penny, in the pilot, are two other characters. Initially just there for comedic and narrative purposes, the two would (as the series progresses) become an integral part of the show's core themes, although they always remain 'co-stars'. These two are MIT graduate (but not in possession of a Doctorate) Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), and Astrophysicist Rajesh "Raj" Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar).

Over the course of the first season, we follow along with their (mis)adventures and learn about their pasts, their present, and wants for the future.

It's a great opening salvo of episodes which, if you're one of the few people living in a remote tribal region of Africa and haven't seen..... I wholeheartedly recommend.

The show might even have been engaging, if the one-liners came less frequently and the characters had a little more dimension. As it is, Sheldon and Leonard are merely laughable, if sweet, and they are even less fleshed out than the characters on "Two and a Half Men."
